As of Wednesday afternoon, both Apple TV and Roku will distribute CNBC+ to users who purchase a subscription to the nascent service, which makes available live-streams of the business-news outlet’s programs from the U.S., Europe and Asia along with a library of past U.S. shows. CNBC+ costs $14.99 per month.
“Nothing is more essential than live coverage during the day, and being able to get that to our audience how and when they want it is a priority,” says Kc Sullivan, president of CNBC, in a recent interview.
A significant part of CNBC’s subscriber base keeps up with the network’s daily markets coverage outside the home, so executives believe some portion of viewers will be eager for a product that lets them watch programming while commuting on a train or as they try to handle dynamics on a trading floor.

At a moment when the news cycle is moving at a breakneck pace, top cable news executives are grappling with an uncomfortable reality: The future of the business has never been more uncertain. As one veteran executive argues, it is more likely than not that by the end of President Donald Trump’s term, CNN, MSNBC and, yes, even Fox News will have new ownership as the power structures that have defined media for the past four decades break down.
MSNBC is already set to be spun off from Comcast and NBCUniversal, joining sister channel CNBC at “SpinCo,” a cable-focused venture to be led by Mark Lazarus. And at Warner Bros. Discovery, a restructuring has placed CNN into a “global linear networks” division, seemingly destined for future dealmaking.
Even Fox News, with its relative financial and ratings strength, isn’t immune from speculation. Rupert Murdoch, who effectively controls Fox through an irrevocable family trust,...

Fox News topped the ratings in January, posting big gains from a year earlier, while MSNBC saw signs that viewers were coming back after a post-election tune-out.
In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.78 million viewers, up 40% from the same month a year earlier, while MSNBC averaged 734,000, down 33%, and CNN posted 522,000, down 14%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 353,000, up 61%, compared to CNN with 118,000, down 5%, and MSNBC with 63,000, down 41%.
In total day, Fox News averaged 1.92 million viewers, up 53%, compared to MSNBC with 506,000, down 34%, and 421,000 for CNN, down 9%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 253,000, up 70%, followed by CNN with 80,000, down 7%, and MSNBC with 45,000, down 42%.
Fox News’ rivals are pointing to month-to-month comparisons for signs that viewers are returning to the news cycles. There is a bit of a caveat, given the December holiday period generally sees a viewership dip, while January was a particularly busy news month.

Neil Cavuto held forth at 4 p.m. on Fox News Channel from a New York studio for more than a quarter century, a veteran newscaster who was never afraid to call balls and strikes. His successor, Will Cain, will lead the hour from a decidedly different venue for cable-news — Dallas, Texas — and probably take a few swings.
“The Will Cain Show” debuts Tuesday at 4 p.m. eastern with what is likely to be a decidedly different look. Fox News has said the program will carry “a signature podcast style,” and Cain acknowledges people looking for the usual cable-news trappings may see something different. “It’s not a sermon, it’s a conversation,” he says of the format, adding: “There’s not the pretense of perfection. Nothing that I have to say is the word of God. I’m on the ride with everyone else in pursuit of the truth.”

For TV-news outlets, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of out with the old and in with the….who?
With the economics of newsgathering less certain as info-hounds move to streaming and social media for their early facts, traditional TV-news venues have been parting ways with veteran anchors and correspondents. Whether the decisions are mutual or unilateral, amicable or adverse, they will leave places such as NBC News, MSNBC, Fox News, CBS News and CNN with fewer of some of their most recognizable faces at a point in the business cycle when viewership tends to narrow.

Neil Cavuto, a longtime Fox News anchor who joined when it launched in 1996, is exiting the cable news network.
Cavuto’s contract with Fox News was due to expire at the end of 2024; the network offered him a new deal and he declined, a source familiar with the situation said. His departure comes as TV news orgs across the board continue to try to rationalize costs for high-priced talent. Cavuto has overseen business news content for both Fox News and Fox Business Network and led special events coverage for Fbn. Cavuto did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

All of the major news networks carried Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech live, but MSNBC was the first to cutaway, reflecting a debate at news outlets over how to cover the former president’s fusillade of false claims and unfounded accusations.
Rachel Maddow, leading coverage on the network, was clearly disturbed over the airtime given to Trump, in which he made unfounded claims about the weaponization of the Justice Department and took credit for the rise in the stock market.
As Trump went on, Maddow cut in and told viewers, “Okay, I will say that it is a decision that we revisit constantly in terms of the balance between allowing somebody to knowingly lie on your air about things they lied about before, and you can predict they are going to lie about, and so therefore it is irresponsible to allow them to do that.”
She added, “The...

Updated, 2:21 Pm: As the American military Friday pounds Iranian proxy groups in the Middle East over the killing of three U.S. soldiers last week, President Joe Biden has warned more bombs could be coming.
“This past Sunday, three American soldiers were killed in Jordan by a drone launched by militant groups backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps,” the president said in a statement just released by the White House. “Earlier today, I attended the dignified return of these brave Americans at Dover Airforce Base, and I have spoken with each of their families. This afternoon, at my direction, U.S. military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the Irgc and affiliated militia use to attack U.S. forces.”

On Monday, the woman who just won $83 a million judgement against Donald Trump will appear on The Rachel Maddow Show.
MSNBC announced late today that Maddow will sit down with E. Jean Carroll for her first interview since a jury ordered former President Donald Trump to hand over $83 million in damages for defaming Carroll.
Carroll will be joined by her attorneys Roberta Kaplan and Shawn Crowley for the interview to discuss the case and a potential appeal from Trump.
While not a huge dent in self-declared billionaire’s wallet, today’s verdict is still, in the words of CNN’s Jake Tapper this afternoon, “quite a chunk of change.” The judgement will be appealed, as the former president indicated today, but overturning the decision could prove difficult for Team Trump.
Fox’s Neil Cavuto made a point of remarking that it was a “unanimous jury” verdict. He also noted that...

Updated with Trump response: After just three hours of deliberations, a New York jury today said Donald Trump has to pay E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in her defamation trial against the former president.
Of that impressive $83.3 million, $65 million is punitive damages and $11 million is for harm to the former Elle columnist’s reputation.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party,” a self pitying Trump said soon afterwards on social media. “This is not America,” Trump added on his Truth Social platform in words he was heard to mumble yesterday and similar to what the now incarcerated Harvey Weinstein said when he was found guilty of rape in 2020 by another Manhattan jury
Trump himself was not present for the decision from the seven man and two women jury Friday. A constant attendee for the trial,...

The morning before the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, the atmosphere at the media center of gravity in Manchester was busy but hardly frenetic — muted may be more like it.
At the Doubletree Hotel, there was the typical gathering of reporters in the lobby lounge and the appearance of attention-starved long-shot candidates, but the media footprint is smaller than it was four years ago. A group of a dozen of so twentysomethings gathered along a long table, clattering away on their laptops, but they were from a college class, not some news outlet.
On Tuesday, the cable and broadcast networks again will provide a swarm of coverage of the final hours of the race, then feverishly report on the initial exit polls and finish by micro-analyzing the results.
The question is whether viewers will show up.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

A federal jury Friday awarded two Georgia election workers a total of $148 million in their defamation case against Rudy Giuliani, as they said they were subject to harassment and death threats over false claims that they were involved in rigging the state’s results in the 2020 presidential election.
The election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss, sued Giuliani over the statements. The trial was largely to determine damages. They had previously testified before the January 6th Committee about the threats that they faced.
CNN and MSNBC went to breaking news of the huge verdict, while Fox News initially stuck with Neil Cavuto’s interview with New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who has endorsed Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential race. Cavuto went to the story once that interview wrapped up.

At Fox Business Network — for one night, at least — it’s all a lot more than the economy.
When the cable outlet televises a Republican primary debate on September 27, many of the strategies it used the last time it did so are going out the window. Gone are moderators Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, who have experience with such events. In their place: First-timers Stuart Varney and Dana Perino, alongside Univision’s Ilia Calderón. The network will also move away from its efforts to focus largely on business and economic topics, as it has in the past.
Executives at Fox News Media have begun contemplating when to take more momentous news coverage to a broader audience, says Jay Wallace, president and executive editor of Fox News Media, in an interview. “There are very few events out there anymore,” Wallace says. “People do care about politics,” he adds. “It is a...

Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million in a last-minute settlement on Tuesday that spared the network the humiliation of a publicized defamation trial. If you get your news coverage from Fox’s prime-time stars, however, you’d have no idea it happened.
The outcome of the lawsuit was not mentioned once between the hours of 7 and 11 p.m. on Tuesday night — a block of time that includes network headliners Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity, all figures who were implicated in Dominion’s case against Fox.

This settlement reflects…” Tapper paused again here and told viewers, “I’m sorry this is going to be difficult to say with a straight face,...

Dominion Voting Systems’ lawsuit against Fox News has placed a glaring spotlight on the internal workings of the network, revealing a marked disconnect between what executives and hosts said privately about the 2020 election and what they broadcast to millions of viewers. Documents and internal communications made public in new court filings highlight the degree to which the network was willing to punish their own staff to avoid angering their audience with factual reporting.

“We still have absolutely no idea how this will end,” CNN’s Jake Tapper declared Tuesday as the House of Representatives appeared to come up short for the third time to vote in a Speaker.
Suffering humiliation on humiliation, GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy saw 20 far-right members of his fractious caucus put their third-ballot support behind another top Republican. With business for the new 118th Congress frozen until a Speaker is selected, McCarthy had 202 votes to 212 for House Democrats caucus chair Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and 20 votes to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan – the latter a top McCarthy ally who has urged members to vote for the California Republican.

Ahh, the holidays — a time for gathering with friends, families, and loved ones… and absolutely torturing them with fake news reports of celebrity deaths.
With folks having ostensibly grown tired of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at Thanksgiving, the trend that took off on TikTok this Christmas weekend found kids and young adults — having clearly already plowed through Emily in Paris — sloughing off their boredom with the celebrity death prank. The setup was simple: Record a video while pretending to look at the phone, gasp dramatically, announce a death, and capture the reaction.

Dr. Anthony Fauci did a media triathlon of sorts Tuesday morning, appearing on Fox News, CNN and NPR to talk about his announcement yesterday that he would retire in December as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and also Chief Medical Advisor to the president. He was also on MSNBC last night.

Republican Rep. Neal Dunn of Florida tweeted tweeted yesterday, “Make no mistake, his resignation Will Not stop us from investigating his role & the origins of the #COVID19 pandemic.”
