Carlene Carter issued a statement Friday welcoming Beyoncé to the family upon release of her new album, Cowboy Carter.
Carter is the daughter of country royalty in mother June Carter Cash, and is a star in her own right.
“I’ve caught wind of some negativity over the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, her new country album,” Carter said. “As a Carter Girl myself and coming from a long line of Carter Girls, I’m moved to ask why anyone would treat a Carter this way? She is an incredibly talented and creative woman who obviously wanted to do this because she likes country music, In my book, she’s one of us Carter women and we have always pushed the boundaries by trying whatever music we felt in our hearts and taking spirit-driven risks.”
The Carter family had some of the earliest country recordings, dating to the 1920s and Mother Maybelle Carter.

Paramount+ has set the premiere date for the all-new documentary June, which will debut on the streaming platform on January 16th, 2024. Directed by Emmy Award-winner Kristen Vaurio, the film will shine a light on the life and work of the late June Carter Cash — five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, comedian, musician, actor, and author.
June will feature never-before-seen archival footage alongside interviews with Carter Cash, her loved ones, and names like Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson. The unprecedented look into Carter Cash’s legacy aims to tell her story beyond her association with her husband, Johnny Cash.
On the significance of directing this story, Vaurio said, “She’s a woman whom many people are aware of, but few know much about her remarkable life and her deep contributions to country music.”

In late 2020, Caleb Caudle did the thing you’re not supposed to do when you’re focusing on a music career and moved from Nashville back to his North Carolina hometown. The onset of the pandemic had brought his touring operation to a complete standstill, leaving his future as a musician in grave jeopardy. It was a tough decision, but, along with the financial benefit, it made him see things in ways he hadn’t before.

Woody Guthrie, the singer, songwriter and writer who spoke truth to power decades before the phrase was invented, was long known to take a political stand. Now, 55 years after his death, he’s still doing just that. As part of a new exhibit of his life and work, he’s joined the list of musicians unhappy with Spotify in light of the company’s affiliation with Joe Rogan’s podcast and his Covid-related opinions and comments.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum found the inspiration for its upcoming fundraising event from an unlikely source: penguins.
At the beginning of the pandemic, when museums and nearly everything else were forced to close down, Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium managed to create a viral moment by letting its penguins roam loose in the facility and broadcasting the shenanigans online. The penguins were early quarantine stars. Country Music Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young was among those watching.
“They were looking at the fish swimming around,” Young recalls.

There’s a steel guitar solo on Elizabeth Cook’s new album Aftermath that sounds like no steel guitar you’ve heard before. Snaking and shimmering rather than twangy and weepy, the solo on “Perfect Girls of Pop,” played through a flanger pedal, is more Giorgio Moroder than George Jones. It’s only 30 seconds in length, but that brief transcendent journey drives home the point that this LP — Cook’s sixth — is far from the traditional country music of her past.

The 1970s were, arguably, the golden age of classic TV Christmas specials. Before variety shows and specials all but disappeared from the lineups of the three major networks (and before cable TV took over and shrank network viewership), each holiday season brought forth highly rated variety specials to please nearly everyone from 1 to 92. The four Johnny Cash Christmas specials, which ran every year on CBS from 1976-1979, were certainly no exception.

In January 1990, a couple of months shy of his 41st birthday, Nick Lowe welcomed a BBC film crew into his suburban London row house for an interview. Lowe had a new album to promote, Party of One, but he’d been in the music business for two decades, first in the band Brinsley Schwarz, which wore its Americana influences on its sleeve but never made much of an impression outside the U.K. (or within, for that matter), and then as a house producer at a scrappy independent label called Stiff Records.

Sparks flew when Johnny Cash first gazed upon June Carter backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in 1956, when their love story began. The eyes of the married man in front of her were as black and shiny as agates, she once recalled, and her fascination with them both worried and stirred her. "I only glanced into them," she said of that moment, "because I believed that I would be drawn into his soul and I would never have been able to walk away." Ultimately, she never did. "They met their match when they came together," Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum editor Michael McCall exclusively tells Closer Weekly. It took years before the ballad of Johnny and June as husband and wife could officially begin 50 years ago this month. Their union, which lasted until June's death in 2003, was a roller-coaster ride of extreme highs and lows, fueled by Johnny's battles with depression and drugs.
