    Between 1951 and 1957 he organised and led the South Georgia Survey, an expedition to map the remote islands in the Southern Atlantic. His work proved invaluable during the 1982 Falklands War and he has two places named after him in the region: Carse Point on the east coast of George VI Sound, Graham Land, and of Mount Carse, South Georgia.
