British actress Kate O’Mara, who was known to many Americans during the 1980s as Joan Collins’ sister Cassandra Morell on ABC‘s Dynasty, died in Sussex, England this morning. She was 74. A TV vet since the 1960s with credits that included such cult British shows as The Saint and The Avengers, O’Mara was coveted for her portrayal of alluring, pungent personalities, such as The Rani in Doctor Who from 1985-86 and the ruthless businesswoman Laura Wilde in the BBC drama Howards’ Way. Born in Leicester, UK, O’Mara was the daughter of actress Hazel Bainbridge (The Family Way) and John Carroll. Originally, O’Mara pursued a career as a speech therapist, but she caught the acting bug and made her stage debut at 24 in a production of The Merchant of Venice. After breaking in TV, O’Mara caught the attention of Hammer Studios which cast her in the...

Ramon Novarro and Greta Garbo in ‘Mata Hari’: The wrath of the censors (See previous post: "Ramon Novarro in One of the Best Silent Movies.") George Fitzmaurice’s romantic spy melodrama Mata Hari (1931) was well received by critics and enthusiastically embraced by moviegoers. The Greta Garbo / Ramon Novarro combo — the first time Novarro took second billing since becoming a star — turned Mata Hari into a major worldwide blockbuster, with $2.22 million in worldwide rentals. The film became Garbo’s biggest international success to date, and Novarro’s highest-grossing picture after Ben-Hur. (Photo: Ramon Novarro and Greta Garbo in Mata Hari.) We all know that the issue of marriage equality is quite divisive, generating various sorts of responses and stances. Gay marriage is now official in places as diverse as Canada, Argentina, Australia, Mexico City, and Washington State, but it's all but unthinkable (at least for the time being) in places such as China, Nigeria, Iran, Texas, and Arkansas. Brad Pitt's mother and Angelina Jolie's father (that's Oscar-winning actor and Midnight Cowboy star Jon Voight) are totally against it, while Clint Eastwood doesn't give a damn about who gets hitched to whom. Unlike the Dirty Harry star, a former MGM contract player in the '40s -- that's Marsha Hunt (please see more info about her dozens of films further down) and a political activist in the last several decades, does very much care. (Pictured above: Hunt and documentarian Roger C. Memos, currently working on a project about the blacklisted actress.

The saying goes, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. This could be applied to the masterful cinematic combination of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. These three individuals have oodles of talent on their own; but bring the three of them together, and they hit a whole new level of brilliance. Pegg and Frost play Graeme and Clive respectively, two British geeks who take a lifelong dream trip to Comic-Con in San Diego, followed by a road trip in an Rv to famous UFO/alien sites of the southwest United States. Late one night they encounter Paul (the oddest named alien in film history, voiced...
