Newcastle United have signed winger Florian Thauvin from Marseille, with Remy Cabella going the other way, and the Magpies have now made five additions this summer.
The 22-year-old winger joins Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Ivan Toney in moving to Tyneside during this window, and Newcastle are now the fifth club of Thauvin’s relatively-short career.
Having progressed through the ranks at Grenoble (three appearances, no goals), he moved to Bastia in 2011 when the former was liquidated, netting an impressive 10 goals and contributing four assists in 51 games – also helping them to the Ligue 2 title.
Bizarrely for the final six months of his time at Bastia, Thauvin was technically a Lille player. Yet, after being loaned straight back to the Corsican club, he never actually made an appearance for Lille before being signed by Marseille in the summer of 2013.

Remy Cabella signed for Newcastle United from Montpellier for a fee somewhere in the region of £12 million last summer to much fanfare having scored 14 goals in 37 Ligue 1 games for the French side the previous season, yet he departs St James’ Park after netting just once in 34 appearances in black and white.
Cabella has moved to Marseille, initially on a season-long loan, which will turn into a permanent deal automatically if certain conditions are met – meaning he has almost certainly played his final match for the Magpies.
Florian Thauvin, a player Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr has courted for years, will take Cabella’s place in the Magpies squad, with Steve McClaren seemingly having decided that he would prefer a more direct winger to supply fellow summer signing Aleksandar Mitrovic, rather than a playmaker.

As the days tick down towards the close of the 2015 summer transfer window it looks likely that Newcastle United will have discarded another talented player without really giving them an extended opportunity to impress on Tyneside by the time it shuts.

Former Newcastle United head coach John Carver thinks new £13 million signing Aleksandar Mitrovic is stylistically the closest striker The Magpies have had to Alan Shearer since the club’s record goal scorer retired nine years ago.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Goals On Sunday, the former United gaffer was full of praise for the former Anderlecht man but did see some disciplinary problems in his future.
Carver said: “He’s an old-fashioned centre-forward & he’s the nearest thing we’ve had to Alan Shearer since Alan Shearer.”
This is spectacular praise indeed for Mitrovic when you consider some of the strikers United have had in their ranks since Shearer decided to call it a day in 2006.
Demba Ba and Loic Remy were fantastic in their own right for The Toon during their respective spells at St James’ Park – but neither were really the sort of physical ‘number...

Managing director Lee Charnley is “taking charge” of Newcastle United’s summer transfer dealings as Mike Ashley “takes a back seat”, Steve McClaren has revealed.
The Magpies boss admitted to meeting with Newcastle owner Ashley last week and he was told that Charnley was handling any potential incomings and outgoings from the club.
With McClaren being the only Barclays Premier League boss also on his club’s board, he also revealed he had been communicating with Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr regularly as he looks to add further players to his squad.

Newcastle United are stepping up their interest in Leeds United’s versatile defender, Sam Byram, according to Clubcall.
The Magpies have shown interest in the 21-year-old for the last two seasons and chief scout Graham Carr and Assistant Manager Ian Cathro were watching him this weekend as The Whites drew 1-1 with Burnley.
Bizarrely, the player was reportedly offered a long-term contract by owner Massimo Cellino but the wages he proposed were less than what the defender was already being paid.
Byram’s his representatives haven’t entertained the thought of committing to such a long deal on worse teams.
Everton, West Ham and Aston Villa have been tracking the right-back, who can also play in midfield, but now the Magpies are set to capitalise on the chaotic negotiations happening at Elland Road.

So far, pre-season friendlies for Newcastle United have highlighted a glaring weakness in defence – which, let’s be fair, has been the biggest issue at the club for a number of years now. Ten goals conceded in six games, all against opposition well below Premier League standard, is almost certainly not the start that Messrs McClaren and Cathro expected, even without club captain Fabricio Coloccini.
Help is on its way though as the club’s brain trust of Steve McClaren, Graham Carr and Lee Charnley have finally forced their third deal of the summer over the line. With Chancel Mbemba following Aleksander Mitrovic from Belgian side Anderlecht, the club have brought in another highly-rated young talent to solidify the middle of the defence.

Ivan Toney is undergoing a two-day trial at Newcastle United as the Magpies rule the roost over the Northampton Town forward before attempting to finalise any deal for his signature.
The 19-year-old trained with the Magpies on Friday and is expected to do the same on Saturday as he looks to secure a £500,000 transfer to Tyneside, according to The Chronicle.
A player regularly watched by Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr over the past 18 months, Toney is one of the most highly-rated talents in the Football League right now.
Tony Marshall/Empics Sport
Toney reportedly underwent a medical earlier this week and is likely to sign once his trial is over, as long as he impresses.
The forward has featured only intermittently for Northampton during their pre-season campaign while speculation over his future continues.

Aston Villa are hoping to pip Newcastle United to the signing of Bordeaux forward Diego Rolan after reportedly offering £12.6 million for the Uruguayan.
Uruguayan publication Republica claim that the Magpies saw a £9.1 million bid rebuffed last month and have now seen their offer superseded by their Premier League rivals.
Tim Sherwood is believed to be targeting Rolan as one of two strikers he intends to bring in to replace Christian Benteke, who has signed for Liverpool in a £32.5 million deal.
Nick Potts/Pa Wire
Newcastle, meanwhile, see the 22-year-old as a versatile option to play either through the middle or out wide – and Stoke City also have an interest in the forward.
Interestingly, TalkSport claimed earlier this month that the Magpies had seen a £13 million – plus Remy Cabella on loan – offer for the Uruguay international rebuffed because Bordeax are determined not to lose their star player this summer.

Newcastle United are looking to add a sixth Dutchman to their squad as they ready an offer for Feyenoord winger Jean-Paul Boetius.
With the 21-year-old having just a year left on his contract at the Eredivisie side, Newcastle are confident a cut-price offer can secure Boetius’ signature – with Goal.com claiming £1.4 million (€2 million) should be enough to bring the Dutch international to Tyneside.
Boetius has attracted interest from Arsenal, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur – who have all scouted him this summer – but Newcastle’s interest appears to be the firmest.
Goalkeeper Tim Krul, right-back Daryl Janmaat, defensive-midfielder Vurnon Anita, attacking-midfielder Siem de Jong and £14.5 million summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum – who scored the opener during the Magpies’ 4-3 pre-season friendly loss to Portland Timbers – are the Magpies’ five current Dutchman, and Boetius could follow.

Newcastle United are set to rekindle their long-held interest in West Ham United defender James Tomkins, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that the 26-year-old could be available for transfer this summer and that the Magpies are keeping an eye on his east London situation.
Long-tracked by Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr, Tomkins was close to move to St James’ Park two summers ago as he was also a firm favourite of Alan Pardew, only for it to fall through at the final hour.

Able to play at centre-back, defensive-midfield and, if necessary, full-back, Tomkins would add versatility to Newcastle – something the Magpies hierarchy cherish in potential recruits.

Newcastle United have made an enquiry about Dynamo Moscow’s Douglas, the centre-back who was all set to join the club in 2013 – only for then director of football Joe Kinnear to inexplicably pull the plug on the deal.

Newcastle United are set to snap up Psv Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as they make their first big foray into the transfer market this summer. It’s been a long time coming, but Wijnaldum is an exciting acquisition, that’s for sure.
As the club continue to scour Europe for affordably-priced talent, Graham Carr and his network of scouts have reportedly cast their eyes over a number of Dutchmen as the French market appears to move outside the club’s price range.
Eredivisie is seen as a league ready to be picked off with wages and transfer fees comparatively cheap compared to the likes of France, Germany and Spain, while this summer has also seen a host of other Netherlands natives linked away from clubs elsewhere around Europe.

Newcastle United target Ivan Toney has been described as an “excellent and hard-working talent” by his Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder.
The Cobblers boss does not believe speculation over Toney’s future has affected the 19-year-old forward’s performances, stating that the youngster was “excellent” in Northampton’s 5-2 victory over Worthing on Tuesday.

Newcastle United remain keen on bringing long-term target Florian Thauvin to Tyneside this summer – but Marseille are doing everything in their power to attempt to keep the France international at the Stade Velodrome.
The Chronicle claim that the Ligue 1 side will offer Thauvin the No 10 jersey – vacated by Andre Ayew, who moved to Swansea City this summer – in a bid to convince him to stay.
Last week L’Equipe reported that the Magpies had tabled a joint bid for both Thauvin and his defensive-midfield teammate Mario Lemina of somewhere in the region of £15 million.
Claude Paris/AP
With Marseille having paid £12 million to Lille for Thauvin in 2013, the Ligue 1 side hope to make a 33% profit on the winger and were initially intending on holding out for £18 million despite the Frenchman’s poor performances over the last couple of seasons. However, the fact they are strapped for cash could see them accept less.

Newcastle United are scouting Ajax’s Joel Veltman as they continue their search for an international-class centre-back.
The 23-year-old Dutch international has been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, and The Chronicle are reporting that the Magpies have been scouting him as well.

Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund are tied in a two-way battle to sign Bas Dost – but Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has advised the forward not to head for Tyneside.
Despite Dutch outlet Voetbal International claiming that the 26-year-old has made it clear to the Wolfsburg board – who he does not get along with anyway – that he will seek pastures new during the upcoming transfer window, the German club are reluctant to let Dost leave.
Hecking does not want his star forward to move this summer, even for £9 million – and, judging by comments he made on Tuesday, he certainly will not allow the Holland international to head for Tyneside.

Speaking to waz-online, Hecking said:
“Why should he go to Newcastle?
“He can play Champions League with us – he won’t be able to do that at Newcastle in the upcoming years.
“We don’t want to sell anybody.

The 22-year-old has had a mightily impressive season over in Spain and has attracted the attention of a number of suitors from the Premier League. So much so that Hitc Sport believed the player’s agent is currently on a tour of the UK and has already contacted representatives from Newcastle.
The forward made 28 La Liga appearances for Los Boqerones last season, scoring eight goals and was handed his full Spain debut by Vicente Del Bosque earlier this year. It was rumoured that the former Racing Santander man was going to cost United somewhere in the region of £5-7 million.

Dutch newspaper Ad claims that Newcastle United want to sign Wolfsburg forward Bas Dost this summer.
United are allegedly leading a pack of Premier League clubs, which includes Southampton, who want to sign the 26-year-old. It’s a signing that would certainly be a statement of intent by the club as they would be purchasing one of the leading marksmen in Europe last season. Dost managed to get on the scoresheet 20 times in 36 appearances.
The Magpies could have quite a strike force next season after it was revealed that the club are edging closer to making Queens Park Rangers’ striker Charlie Austin their first summer buy. The recent England call-up could cost in the region of £15 million while Dost could cost anywhere above £10 million.
Maybe Newcastle’s owner Mike Ashley Will dip his hands into his pockets this summer…

Steve McClaren will receive £50 million worth of new talent for his Newcastle United squad with the first potential arrival already identified as Queens Park Rangers’ Charlie Austin, according to the Shields Gazette.
The plans for McClaren’s new-look United come after the former England manager signed a three year deal with the option for a further five years yesterday. And in what is still a bit of a shock move, he was also appointed to a new look board of directors alongside managing director Lee Charnley, chief scout Graham Carr and club ambassador Bob Moncur.
The 54-year-old, who starts work at the club today, will be told by Charnley and Carr the plans the pair have for the transfer window which officially swung wide open yesterday.
The Austin link comes about because United’s strike force needs some serious surgery after a pretty baron campaign.

Mike Ashley has this evening stepped down from Newcastle United’s board of directors.
The owner, who only formally joined the Newcastle board in April 2014 when he also named Lee Charnley as the Magpies’ managing director, will be taking a step back along with finance director John Irving who is leaving the Club.
The new board will now consist of Head coach Steve McClaren, chief scout Graham Carr, club ambassador Bob Moncur, and MD Charnley.
The reshuffle means that The Magpies become the only Premier League club to have its head coach on its Board of Directors, a move that the club has described as adding “significant strength to it.”
So down the line if things aren’t going too well for McClaren, will the former England manager be charged with sacking himself? How will this work?

Newcastle United have officially unveiled Steve McClaren as their permanent head coach a full six months after Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace.
The former England, Middlesbrough and Derby County boss had been the favourite for the role ever since Pardew left the Magpies for the Eagles at the turn of the year and has penned a three-year-deal at St James’ Park.
McClaren’s contract has the option for another five years which could see him in charge for the next eight years.
And the 54-year-old’s remit includes a top eight Premier League finish and a cup win.
However, having reportedly turned the Magpies down on two occasions already in 2015 – first immediately after Pardew left in January and then with three matches left of the season – McClaren has finally agreed to take up the position having been sacked as Derby County boss last month.

Newcastle United are looking to add proven quality to their squad this summer – with Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel one of a number of internationals they are tracking.
The 22-year-old Dutch midfielder spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan at AC Milan and the Magpies believe they can tempt him to the North East for next season.
According to The Chronicle, Van Ginkel and West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino are on Newcastle’s potential shopping list.

Steve McClaren is expected to be named as Alan Pardew’s permanent successor as head coach on Tyneside this week and owner Mike Ashley has promised to back him in the transfer market.
The ex-Derby County, England and Middlesbrough boss’ previous relationship with Graham Carr is seen as a positive and that is one of the reasons why managing director Lee Charnley will release funds this summer.

Newcastle United are looking to recruit at least seven players this summer – with Manchester City defender Micah Richards expected to be Steve McClaren’s first signing as Magpies boss.
The 26-year-old spent the season on loan at Serie A club Fiorentina and he will a free agent this summer once his contract expires with Man City on July 1st.
Although primarily a right-back, Richards can also operate at centre-back and it is that versatility that has attracted both Newcastle and Liverpool to the 5ft 11in defender’s availability on a free transfer – with the Magpies looking to have won the race, according to The Daily Star.

Newcastle United have been linked with a whole host of incomings this summer but three of their French-speaking contingent appear to be on their way out of the club after reportedly being placed on the transfer list.
Yoan Gouffran, Mehdi Abeid and Gabriel Obertan have been deemed surplus to requirement at the Magpies and have been put up for sale, according to The Sun.
While centre-back Mike Williamson and goalkeeper Rob Elliot are also believed to be available at the right price, it appears as if the three French-speaking players are those most likely to depart St James’ Park in the coming weeks.

Newcastle United are a club at a crossroads this summer. A new head coach, likely to be Steve McClaren, will be appointed within the next few weeks before the club embarks upon an overhaul of the playing staff. The club must get things right in the next few months after a disastrous 2014-15 campaign.
Owner Mike Ashley gave his first televised interview on the final day of the Premier League season and promised “investment” in the side, but what does that actually mean? Which areas of the team will be strengthened? And how much money will be spent?
Although those questions are yet to be answered, one thing is certain – the man in charge of the summer recruitment drive will be the Magpies’ head scout, Graham Carr.
Brought in from Tottenham Hotspur in February 2010, the former Northampton Town defender has been in control of incomings at St James’ Park ever since.

Newcastle United are stepping up their search for defensive reinforcements and have pinpointed Marseille centre-back Nicolas N’Koulou as one of their top summer transfer targets.
As WhatCultureNUFC writer @ChrisDHWaugh predicted on Tuesday in his list of 10 potential centre-backs Newcastle must try to sign this summer, the Magpies are now looking to snap up N’Koulou – according to the Daily Mail.
Everton have also shown firm interest in the 25-year-old Cameroonian, with Napoli and Arsenal also reported to be among those monitoring the centre-back’s situation in France.
Claude Paris/AP
Interestingly, Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Marseille forward Florian Thauvin – so a double swoop could be in the offing this summer.
N’Koulou is not the biggest at 5ft 11ins but he is great on the floor and he loves to play out from the back. It would provide a shift away...

Newcastle United are plotting to strip Celtic of their Scottish Premier League-winning central-defensive partnership this summer – by signing both Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.
The Magpies have been heavily linked to £10 million-rated Van Dijk all season but reports now claim chief scout Graham Carr has cast a longing gaze at Denayer, who has spent the campaign on loan north of the border from Manchester City.
The 19-year-old Belgian will not be allowed to make his move to Celtic permanent but Man City would be willing to let the 6ft 1in centre-back go on loan to a Premier League club – with Newcastle heading the queue, according to the Daily Star.

Newcastle United continue to search for a new head coach in spite of their fight against relegation – and Saint Etienne boss Christophe Galtier has returned to the top of their wanted list.
The Magpies spoke with Galtier in January after tracking the 49-year-old for some time – and now reports in France claim they are in “discussions” with the Ligue 1 head coach.
French paper Mercato claims the Magpies have contacted Galtier and that they have lined him up as the man to take over on Tyneside should they remain in the Premier League.
Laurent Cipriani/AP
A French League Cup winner in 2013, Galtier has worked wonders on a modest budget at St Etienne and he led the club to fourth in Ligue 1 last season. This has not gone unnoticed with the powers that be at Newcastle, with managing director Lee Charnley and head scout Graham Carr both believed to be keen admirers.

Newcastle United know that they will be without Papiss Cisse for their next seven games – but there is the real possibility that the Senegalese striker may not feature much for the club at all.
Cisse will be 30 come June and it is public knowledge that the Magpies were close to allowing their top scorer to move to Russia in the January window – plus question marks remain around his knee, which is still not 100% right – so Newcastle must start planning to add a proven forward this summer.
In some ways whether Cisse stays or goes is a moot point – Newcastle need greater strength-in-depth up front regardless. Ayoze Perez has been impressive but is still young and is not really an out-and-out forward anyway, Emmanuel Riviere has not really worked out and looks to just be a squad member, while Facundo Ferreyra’s disastrous spell on Tyneside will...

Three goals in, and already Ayoze Perez is looking like a future Newcastle United hero. He cost nothing, came from an inauspicious former club in Tenerife and was identified as one for the future (despite ringing endorsements from most Spanish based journalists who saw him play last year). If you thought he was going to start against Spurs and West Brom at the start of the season, you would probably have been laughed out of the pub.
But now things have changed: we’re told Barcelona, Real Madrid and Porto were vanquished in their attempts to sign the young Spaniard and that Lee Charnley pulled off a masterstroke – on the advice of Graham Carr – and Alan Pardew’s eyes are twinkling at the prospect he’s got (even if he keeps saying there’s room for improvement).

Newcastle will remain frustratingly steadfast in their search for striking reinforcements after declining the opportunity to sign Ecuador star Enner Valencia.
The 25-year-old has made a stunning rise to prominence at the World Cup after scoring three goals in two Group E games for his country and has reportedly been offered to clubs around Europe with his Mexican employers, Pachua, reportedly seeking an eight-figure fee.

Newcastle United have lodged a “substantial” bid for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier, according to Sky Sources (via TeamTalk).
The undisclosed bid signals an intent from The Magpies to make the 23-year-old French international the man to replace the departing Yohan Cabaye, who is expected to complete his move to Paris Saint-Germain today (Wednesday).

Had Newcastle won both of their games since Boxing Day, rather than losing narrowly to Arsenal, and dropping three points with ten men at West Brom, much-maligned owner Mike Ashley may well have been tempted to do as he has in the past two January windows, investing in playing staff.
Two years ago, Ashley brought currently out-of-form striker Papiss Cisse to the North East with devastating results, and the side almost made it into the Champions League, while last year, the Magpies invested heavily in a number of players to stave off the threat of relegation (and make an unlikely run at winning the Europa League.)
Quite whether Ashley will see Newcastle’s form – the last two results notwithstanding – as indication that the club have enough in terms of talent, or nearly enough to make a concentrated assault on European qualification remains to be seen, but if he does,...

Everyone loves transfer deadline day – the money, the silliness, the head of Harry Redknapp poking out of a car window, there’s always something happening and its always entertaining. Yet over in North East, it’s very much been the tale of two cities – while Sunderland’s Paolo Di Canio continues to stuff his squad with a bus-load of foreigners while lambasting his current players, there’s been almost nothing happening at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are lining up a £12 million move for Marseille striker André-Pierre Gignac, according to the Daily Mail.
The 27-year old has earned comparisons with “a British style centre forward in the Alan Shearer mould” and is reportedly ready to make the move to St James’ Park.
The Magpies will be hoping to fend off interest from the likes of Everton, Fulham, Arsenal and Manchester United, who have all been linked with the forward in the past, while the France international is said to be well known to chief scout Graham Carr.
His capture would bring some welcome relief to Tyneside following the immensely unpopular appointment of Joe Kinnear as Director of Football, who claims the club have not lodged a bid for another of their transfer targets, Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony.
Newcastle were linked with the Ivorian, but he has since emerged as a target for Swansea City,...

This week’s appointment of Joe Kinnear as Director of Football at Newcastle United has raised doubts over the future of star midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, write the Independent.
The arrival of the 66-year old former Magpies manager and the resignation of managing director Derek Llambias has created a power struggle at St James’ Park and the 26-year old could become a casualty.
The French international had hoped to sit down and hold talks over a fresh contract this summer with just two years left on the deal he signed when he made his temporary move to Newcastle permanent in January 2011.
And despite enduring frequent injury problems over the last two years since joining on loan from Marseille, the midfielder has still managed to notch 11 goals for Newcastle from 56 starts, something of which has alerted rival clubs Liverpool and free-spending Monaco to his services.
And Kinnear could well let him...

Earlier this week, former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear was appointed director of football at the club, a decision taken by unpopular owner Mike Ashley that created an instant storm at St James’ Park.
It was an appointment not helped by the fact Kinnear had earlier given a shambolic interview to talkSPORT in which he mispronounced the names of players and staff and also insulted the club’s fans, nor was the controversy lessened in any way by news that the 66-year old former Wimbledon manager would be Alan Pardew’s superior.
And the bad news just kept on coming for Newcastle fans as Kinnear later scrapped the Magpie’s long-standing pursuit of free agent Douglas, a player who was highly rated by Pardew and was on the verge of signing.

Newcastle United have pulled out of the deal to sign defender Douglas, according to Sky Sports.
The Brazilian born centre-back, who also holds a Dutch passport, had been a long-term target of The Magpies and a deal was understood to have been on the verge of being finalised, with the player available on a free transfer having let his contract run down with Dutch side Fc Twente.
Manager Alan Pardew and chief scout Graham Carr had been chasing Douglas’ signature for the past two seasons. However, the 25-year old will not be playing at St James’ Park next season after the North East outfit backed out of the deal, a decision believed to have been made by the club’s controversial new director of football Joe Kinnear.

Former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has today been officially named as the club’s director of football, with current manager Alan Pardew set to report into him, according to the Mail Online.
The appointment would seem to undermine Pardew’s position at St. James’ Park, especially given the fact both he and chief scout Graham Carr will have to answer to him.
Kinnear, who managed the Magpies between 2008 and 2009, has been handed a great amount of power at the North East club and will answer only to owner Mike Ashley when it comes to footballing matters.
He will also have the same amount of say over transfer dealings as Pardew, and is expected to travel with the first team squad on match days. He will even base himself at the club’s training ground.

One of the big summer transfer saga seems set to be the pursuit of St Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Inter Milan have now moved ahead of their competitors according to TalkSport.
Newcastle have already been heavily linked with a move for the Gabon international, with head scout Graham Carr and owner Mike Ashley watching him a few weeks ago according to The Times, but Inter have now made a bid for the player.
Talksport have pointed towards Italian reports that Inter have made a bid in the region of £8.5m (10m Euros) for the striker but that it has been turned down. The article does goes on to say that Inter and St Etienne are still in talks and confident of thrashing out a deal.
The huge interest in the striker is understandable considering his seventeen goals in thirty matches this season and with Newcastle short of striking options at the minute,...

Newcastle were one of the busiest clubs in January signing the likes of French internationals Moussa Sissoko and Mathieu Debuchy, and with the club looking to push forward again in the summer, they could once more be one of the busier clubs. Alan Pardew has already spoken about the likelihood of bringing in new players this summer (according to Teamtalk) and the need to strengthen the underbelly of the club, which is more pronounced after the well publicised failures of last summer and a largely disappointing season so far this term.
With several areas of the side still looking a little thin, here is an update on ten transfer targets who could be heading in to St. James’ Park in the summer.
10. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Sources: Newcastle Evening Chronicle and The Mirror.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has not finished with his French revolution quite yet, and is weighing up the possibility of bringing in William Vainqueur from Standard Liege, according to The Sun
Pardew has already brought in the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran, Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Massadio Haidara as he desperately seeks a way to lift his side to safety in the Premier League, and Standard midfielder Vainqueur would become his sixth French signing.
It is thought Newcastle are lining up a last-minute bid for the player, who is valued at £3 million.
Pardew has been tracking the midfielder throughout the course of the season after receiving encouraging reports from chief scout Graham Carr, who has revealed that the Magpies are attempting to replicate the old blueprint of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal by bringing in a golden era of French stars by landing the likes of Thierry Henry,...

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew will turn to West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie to fill the immediate void left by Demba Ba, should he seal his “dream move” to Chelsea this month, according to a report in The Sun.
They claim that talks are ongoing between Chelsea and Ba’s representatives after initial talks reportedly broke down on Sunday night over the Senegalese forward’s wage demands. The striker, easily the Toon’s top scorer this season with 13 league goals (50% of the club’s whole return in the top flight this season), is expected to line-up for The Magpies tonight against Everton at St. James’ Park for what will be first appearance since talking to the European Champions about a move away.
Despite Pardew putting a new contract offer on Ba’s desk and challenging him to commit his future to Newcastle, plans for his exit are already being drawn...

Although Newcastle United aren’t afraid to dip into the transfer market for immediately essential first-teamers (Papiss Cisse and Vurnon Anita), Mike Ashley has implemented a very clear transfer strategy that concentrates first-and-foremost on youth. The scouting team (led by the revered Graham Carr) have been scouring Europe and beyond looking for exciting, young players who can be acquired for a low fee and, should it be in the Club’s interest, sold on later (for a profit). Newcastle’s new-found strength in youth has been demonstrated by the club taking to the new U-21 Development League like a duck to water with the side putting together some very impressive results against both Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur, although they lost 1-0 to Southampton, who are renowned for their youth set-up.

Newcastle United lined up for their first pre-season friendly of the summer this evening in their brand new black and white Puma home kit in front of a small but spirited crowd in the Stadion an der Gellertstraße, Chemnitz, Germany, and were beaten by the home side, after a ninth minute goal from Anton Fink.
6,700 fans turned out to see the home side, who have already played three pre-season games, rebuff a host of Newcastle chances, thanks to outstanding goalkeeper Philipp Pentke who saved from Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic and Shola Ameobi.
As is the nature of these games, Alan Pardew took the game as an opportunity to give some new and fringe players a run out, with every single one of the named substitutes playing some part apart from veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper, and in truth Newcastle fans shouldn’t look at the result as indicative of anything.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is hopeful of securing one of his summer transfer targets in the next fortnight.
The Magpies boss has been desperately trying to sign Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy and Fc Twente striker Luuk de Jong but the North East club has so far struggled to agree a fee with either respective club for their services. Debuchy, who impressed at the Euro 2012 Championships for France and who is a close friend of Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye is keen to move to St. James’ Park but de Jong seems to prefer a move to German side Borussia Mochengladbach, who have secured Champions League football next season.
Newcastle have also made bids for de Jong’s Twente team-mate Douglas, a commanding Brazilian centre-half in the Dutch league who is unsettled at Steve McClaren’s side and also versatile Ajax left-back and defensive midfielder Vurnon Anita, but the Geordies again...
