Adam Sandler first introduced “The Chanukah Song” in 1994 during the “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live.” Although he penned the holiday tune himself, Sandler revealed in an interview with Access Hollywood that Roseanne Barr — who was hosting that week — almost performed the song on the late-night show.
“They were talking about Roseanne singing it,” Sandler recalled. “And she was nice enough to say ‘no, let Adam do that, that’s his, he wrote it, that’s his song.'”
During the “Weekend Update” segment with Norm Macdonald in 1994, Sandler explained that he wrote “The Chanukah Song” after noticing the lack of music about Hanukkah.
“Put on your yarmulke. Here comes Hanukkah. So much funukah. To celebrate Hanukkah,” Sandler sang. “Hanukkah is the festival of lights. Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights.”
Sandler then listed several celebrities who are Jewish, including David Lee Roth, James Caan,...

"Without a doubt, he was the most intimidating pitcher in the history of the game." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Facing Nolan, profiling the baseball legend Nolan Ryan. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival last month, and will show in theaters on May 24th for a special event. In the world of Major League Baseball no one has created a mythology like Nolan Ryan. Told from the point of view of the hitters who faced him (which is a great setup for a doc about him) and the teammates who revered him, Facing Nolan is the definitive documentary film about a Texas legend. Directed by Bradley Jackson the film features new interviews with Nolan Ryan, President George W. Bush, Craig Biggio, Steve Buechele, George Brett, Rod Carew, Roger Clemens, Tom Grieve, Tom House, Randy Johnson, Pete Rose, Ivan Rodriguez, Bobby Valentine,...

Bradley Jackson’s “Facing Ryan” tells the story of an agreeable fellow from small-town Texas who married his high school sweetheart, followed his dream of playing major league baseball, pitched for four MLB teams over a 27-year career while operating a cattle ranch during off-season, set records for no-hitters and strikeouts that remain unbroken to this day, held high-profile executive positions with two of his former teams more than a decade after his retirement from the game, and currently resides on the ranch where he and his wife, the loving and supportive life partner he wed back in 1967, are frequently surrounded by their children and grandchildren.
If you were to present this scenario at a pitch meeting, you’d likely be shot down for failing to hype your narrative with suspenseful setbacks, intense conflict and a slew of obstacles for your protagonist to overcome. And if you somehow managed to get your film made anyway,...

Well, this is sure a lot more fun than getting socks on the first day of Hanukkah again (though far less practical). Off Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings' recently released album, It’s a Holiday Soul Party, “8 Days (of Hanukkah)” and its new video are a freaking blast. It has some heavy Schoolhouse Rock (Jew-lhouse Rock) vibes. You know there's dancing dreidels! Look, Adam Sandler's song will always be seminal, as long as Jewish kids try to seem cool by telling people that Rod Carew and Jonas Salk were actually Jewish (poor kid, you probably should've picked Sammy Davis Jr. and a Gyllenhaal), but with this song, Jones might've started a new Hanukkah tradition. Traditiooooooooon! Tradition.

Take off your yarmulke ... put down that gin and tonica ... 'cause Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew isn't Jewish after all ... despite the lyrics in Adam Sandler's famous "Hanukkah Song."Everyone knows the lyrics:"O.J. Simpson ... Not A Jew!!! ... but guess who is ... Hall of famer Rod Carew ... (he converted)."But when we ran into Rod at Lax this weekend, the baseball legend set the record straight .. he never actually converted back in the day. Don't worry,...

Terri (20th Century Fox) An awkward, obese teen (Jacob Wysocki) finds himself forming an odd friendship with his equally left-of-center vice-principal (John C. Reilly), who decides to help the boy navigate his way through adolescence’s rocky road. Low key film is filled with pathos and humor, but is ultimately too laid back for its own good (not to mention too long). Worth seeing for young Wysocki’s amazing, completely natural performance, and Reilly’s goofy charm. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Mr. Nice (Mpi) Rhys Ifans stars in the true story of Howard Marks, a Welsh-born Oxford grad who gained the most notoriety in his life for being the UK’s biggest hashish smuggler during the ‘70s and ‘80s, when he wasn’t busy spying for Her Majesty’s government, hanging out with a...
