Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Paul Rudd, Kamail Nanjiani, Logan Kim, and Carrie Coon in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’
To succeed, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire needed to be fun and capture the spirit of the original Ghostbusters. It was and it did – with caveats. Seeing the Og Ghostbusters team strapping on their proton packs was a hoot, but this latest installment in the franchise made some odd plot choices. It also sticks around half an hour too long.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a direct sequel to Afterlife, finds the Spengler family – teens Phoebe and Trevor, plus mom Callie – and former teacher-turned-ghostbuster Gary Grooberson moving into the iconic NYC headquarters. The foursome’s kept hopping, responding to kooky undead creatures, including a sewer dragon. If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, they’re on the case. Why? As Gary says, quoting the “Ghostbusters” lyrics, because bustin’ makes him feel good. (That’s just one...

The new film in the “Ghostbusters” series, a sequel to the reboot of the franchise – Ghostbusters: Afterlife – continues the goodwill and fan service carried out by Jason Reitman’s 2021 film. This time around though, Reitman assumes the role of producer/co-writer and hands the reigns of the series off to director Gil Kenan. The result – Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – again plays as a well-meaning and, overall, rather entertaining ode to the original films and any nostalgia the viewer may have for the property itself.
In Frozen Empire, the Spengler family have assumed the mantle of “official” Ghostbusters and now operate out of the iconic New York City firehouse. Initially things seem to be going well for the new team, but when an evil force is mistakenly unleashed from an ancient artifact, the current crop of Ghostbusters must again enlist their predecessors to prevent the world from falling into a second Ice Age.

Greta Gerwig on the set of "Barbie". Photo by Jaap Buitendijk for Warner Bros.
The Directors Guild of America has announced their nominations for the film year just passed. They are:
Outstanding Directing Achievement, Theatrical Feature Film
Greta Gerwig, Barbie (2nd DGA nod) Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things (1st DGA nod) Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer (5th DGA nod) Alexander Payne, The Holdovers (3rd DGA nod) Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
In short, the Best Picture frontrunners! All five of these films are locked up now in Oscar's headline category. It reminds us of ye olden times when armchair pundits knew that the DGA choices were more predictive of the eventual Best Picture nominees (back then more nail-biting with only five choices) than Oscar's Best Director lineup. Old factoids like that have vanished in the modern era when every film with considerable buzz ends up in the Best Picture lineup. But...

The Barbie movie was released in July 2023, but it remains one of the hottest films in the world. An unexpected hit for director Greta Gerwig, Barbie is a revisionist feminist fantasy that offers up a new take on the iconic doll that defined so many people’s childhoods. While Margot Robbie plays the doll herself, rocking the screen in a succession of incredible outfits, she’s supported by a full cast of talented stars, including Ryan Gosling as her counterpart Ken. Gosling’s primary contribution to the film is a hilarious song that has not only earned him a place as one of the year’s fan favorites, but a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart as well.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell star as a married couple who have their relationship shaken after near-miss with an avalanche while on a family ski vacation, in the dark comedy/drama Downhill. Nat Faxon and Jim Rash co-direct this American re-make of 2014 Force Majeure, Swedish director Ruben Ostlund’s biting comedy about how a man’s reaction to danger undermines his relationship with his wife and children. The term “force majeure” means an irresistible compulsion, like the man’s self-preservation response.
Ruben Ostlund’s dark comedy was sharply funny as well as thought-provoking. Like most English-language re-makes of international hits, Downhill is a paler version. Still, Downhill has its moments, comic and otherwise, largely thanks to the fine work of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell. Their comic chemistry and...

Fans of the highly-praised British historical TV series will welcome the return of Downton Abbey but this return to the lavish, high-fashion1920s and the entertaining aristocratic Crawley family, and their equally-entertaining resourceful servants, delivers delights for those who are not familiar with the popular show as well. The movie picks up not too long after the end of the series, as the Crawley family prepares for an overnight visit by the king and queen, a treat that sends everyone, upstairs and down, scrambling to make sure everything is perfect. The royal visit creates a focus to revisit the characters, and once again experience the show’s mix of snappy dialog, colorful personalities, and social commentary in a time of momentous change.

"I'm not sure that Americans have penises," Ewan McGregor declares, carefully and painstakingly keeping his expression as deadpan as possible.
Danny Boyle's ears suddenly perk up. "Wait, your penis isn't there? Did they blur it out?" He lets out a laugh that might be characterized as the sound of exploding joy. "That would explain a lot!"
"They have to import them from Scotland," Jonny Lee Miller adds, at which point McGregor's stone-faced look begins to crack a bit.
"Scottish sausage!" Ewan Bremner chimes in, chuckling. "It's where the term comes from.

Kingsman: The Secret Service, in the words of director Matthew Vaughn, is a kind of post-modern love letter to spy movies, and that’s about as accurate a description of the effort as you’re going to get. Every move is clearly aimed at not only the vision and style of early Bond and his ilk, but pulls in the kind of post-modern storytelling that made Kick-Ass the curious wunderfilm it is.
Taron Egerton plays Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, a clever enough lad who is a victim of his circumstances. Harry Hart (Colin Firth), aka Galahad, bails Eggsy out of jail, and makes him a very unique offer. A member of a sort of double-super-secret spy organization, Hart sees something in Eggsy, and thinks he could be just the candidate to join the ranks of the spy elite.
We then get to take a ride through spy school, as several candidates...

Paying homage to classic spy movies, Kingsman: The Secret Service is the coming of age story of a young man who joins a private British company that serves as the intelligence organization that is seemingly built to define what other intelligence organizations should be – it is essentially Mi-6 without all the bothersome government oversight and regulations.
As the film opens, we first hear the helicopters’ rhythmic urgency. In true old-school fashion, we are treated to an exciting set piece full of flying bullets and thundering explosions. The scene will inevitably lay the emotional groundwork for the rest of the film. During this battle, Harry Hart (Colin Firth), codename Galahad, leads a helicopter assault team of agents into a middle-eastern bunker to gather intelligence. One of his men is killed saving the rest of the team and Harry must now inform a grieving widow and son of the death of their loved one.

Divergent is one of my favorite movies because it has a fantastic story and lots of action. The film is about a girl Tris (Shailene Woodley). She lives in futuristic Chicago surrounded by a wall that was built after a great war. In this city the people are divided into factions to keep the peace. Factions are a group of people who do the same thing. The factions are called Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Erudite, and Dauntless. In Abnegation they are selfless. They believe that other people come first. In Candor they are honest. They believe that you should always tell the truth. In Amity they are peaceful. They believe everything should be tranquil and calm. In Erudite they are intelligent. They believe everyone should think and make the right choice. Lastly the Dauntless are brave. They believe in no fear.
Tris is old enough to choose a faction. She can...

On first encountering the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, a free black man drugged and kidnapped from an educated, domestic life by opportunistic slave-traders in Washington D.C., director Steve McQueen felt he had read the “[American version of the Anne Frank story]” – two historical people fated to represent institutionalized evils through very personal words and experiences. Northup, as embodied by Chiwetel Ejiofor with a complex psychological palette of dignity, fear, shame, resilient guile, and churning pain, leads us through the true events he experienced in the blighted, grotesque era of Antebellum Southern human exploitation in the unflinching British drama 12 Years a Slave. Terrifyingly objective in detailing the debasing methods particular to the racially-stoked brand of American slavery, 12 Years a Slave is a wearying, enthralling film that is certain to resonate and educate while still being as rivetingly conspiratorial with the viewer as any of the best prison escape adventures.

The release of Ron Howard’s Rush, one of the most anticipated (not to say mega-hyped) films of the year, inevitably begs comparisons to some of the great car-themed movies of the past.

It seems that automobiles have played key roles in films of every genre, from drama to horror to comedy to documentary. In some, like American Graffiti, Rebel without a Cause, and Bonnie and Clyde, the vehicles primarily help set the tone of the era in which the stories are set. In other films the cars themselves are the story. The animated Cars comes to mind, along with the Love Bug series, Christine, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And then there are films in which the cars have taken their place alongside the human stars as film icons in their own right. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, for instance, as...

Given that both the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and the motion picture camera came to be at almost the same time, and given that both cars and movies have gone on to hold such special places in American culture, it’s no wonder that Hollywood has had a long love affair with automobiles and racing. From the silent film Racing Hearts (1922), to Disney’s Herbie franchise, to the late Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder (1990), to Universal’s Fast & Furious series, almost as long as there have been movies, there have been movies about cars. Now, award-winning director Ron Howard has entered the automotive film waters with Rush, a biographical action-drama about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Rush is a very good movie, and definitely one to keep an eye on as we head into awards season.

Hello again, dear readers, and I hope you all enjoyed your long Labor Day weekend. Now that the end-of-August releases have landed with their customary thud, we can leave the summer movie season behind and look forward to the fall and winter releases. In the meantime, this week’s new Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at the first teaser for the upcoming sci-fi book adaptation Divergent.
Premise: In a futuristic world where society is divided into five factions which each represent a different virtue, teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another – for the rest of their lives. When Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley) is undergoing the initiation process for her chosen faction, she learns that she is a Divergent – a person who does not fit into any one faction. "Harry Potter" is not for everyone. Some people do not like fun. Some people do not like magic. Some people do not like fun and magic together. I get it, and I accept it. Harry hate isn't something I'm into, but if that's your position, have a ball. You'll get no killing curses out of me.
But killing curses are flying, it seems, from the wand of Alan Moore.
The critically acclaimed and famously reclusive "Watchmen" writer is drawing a harder line against the boy wizard than even the staunchest "Potter" hater could dream up as the latest installment of Moore's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 2009," out in stores Wednesday (June 20), features Harry Potter as the Antichrist.

Cohen and directed by Brian De Palma, the sleeper hit about a homely teenager with deadly telekinetic powers helped to propel Sissy Spacek to movie stardom and resurrected the career of former 1950s Universal player Piper Laurie, both of whom were nominated for Academy Awards. (Both Spacek and Laurie lost to actresses featured in Sidney Lumet's...

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 The worldwide box office for all movies released on planet Earth cumed at $32.6 billion in 2011, up 3 percent from 2010. The domestic (Us/Canada) box office was down 4% to $10.2 billion, while the international box office was up 7% to $22.4 billion according to figures released by the Motion Picture Association of America. It's unclear how currency fluctuations affected the international box-office Us dollar figure. What those numbers show is the fast-increasing importance of the international box office — not only to local productions, but also to the product coming out of Hollywood factories. In fact, if it weren't for Chinese, Japanese, German, Mexican, French, Australian, etc. moviegoers, mega-budgeted productions such as John Carter, The Lone Ranger, Avatar, and those in the Transformers, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises either would never have gotten off the ground or would...

Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes in David Yates' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Oscar 2012 Predictions: Best Picture, Director, Acting Categories The Best Foreign Film Language winner is always a puzzle, as only a small percentage of Academy voters cast ballots in that category. That leaves room for some surprising — sometimes downright bizarre — choices. Asghar Farhadi's A Separation has been winning awards just about everywhere (though it lost the BAFTA to Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In). We're tempted to have it as our pick as well, but we're going out on a limb by selecting Philippe Falardeau's more sentimental Monsieur Lazhar from Canada. We'll see. Best Adapted Screenplay will definitely go to Alexander Payne, Jim Rash, and Nat Faxon for The Descendants. We believe the Best Original Screenplay will go to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, though a Michel Hazanavicius win for...

For the most part, the Best Director nominees for this year's Academy Awards are a delightfully eclectic but expected bunch, save for a much-discussed alleged snub of industry legend and three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg for "War Horse." And for all the love "The Help" has received, there was none for its newbie director Tate Taylor. The chosen five nominees are: Martin Scorsese for "Hugo," Woody Allen for "Midnight in Paris," Terrence Malick for "The Tree of Life," Alexander Payne for "The Descendants" and rising star Michel Hazanavicius for "The Artist."
One could make the "It takes a village ..." argument about filmmaking, but when it comes down to it,...

Asa Butterfield, Jude Law in Martin Scorsese's Hugo Oscar Predictions: Best Picture The Artist In early 1996, the Best Picture win of Mel Gibson's Braveheart wasn't a surprise, as the Producers Guild/Directors Guild award winner Apollo 13 had failed to be shortlisted in the Academy Awards' Best Director category. In fact, Ron Howard's DGA win — much like Steven Spielberg's for The Color Purple a decade earlier — could be seen as a message to the Academy: highly commercial, crowd-pleasing filmmakers are people, too. On the other hand, considering that both Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee were Best Director Oscar winners for, respectively, Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Brokeback Mountain (2005), the Shakespeare in Love and Crash Best Picture victories turned out to be major upsets. This year, the two movies that could theoretically lead to such an upset are Martin Scorsese's Hugo and Alexander Payne's The Descendants.
