Denver — James Eagen Holmes came from a well-tended San Diego enclave of two-story homes with red-tiled roofs, where neighbors recall him as a clean-cut, studious young man of sparing words.
Tall and dark-haired, he stared clear-eyed at the camera in a 2004 high school yearbook snapshot, wearing a white junior varsity soccer uniform – No. 16. The son of a nurse, Arlene, and a software company manager, Robert, James Holmes was a brilliant science scholar in college.
The biggest mystery surrounding the 24-year-old doctoral student was why he would have pulled on a gas mask and shot dozens of people early Friday in a suburban Denver movie theater, as police allege.
In the age of widespread social media, no trace of Holmes could be found on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter or anywhere on the Web. Either he never engaged or he scrubbed his trail.

James Holmes, the alleged gunman who killed 12 people and injured dozens during a screening of the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises, described himself as the hero's arch nemesis, a police official says. "It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was 'The Joker,' obviously the enemy of Batman," New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday at a press conference. The source of Kelly's information wasn't immediately clear - also, The Joker had green hair. However, the commissioner is reportedly a close friend of Dan Oates, the chief of police in Aurora,...

A statue of famous Dr. Seuss character The Lorax has been stolen from the late author's estate in San Diego, California.
The bronze artwork of the character, featured in the book of the same name and a new movie starring Zac Efron, was standing on a tree stump at the children's writer's hilltop home, but it was reported missing on Monday.
Dr. Seuss - real name Theodor Geisel - died in 1991 aged 87. The statue was one of two made by his stepdaughter, and the writer's widow, Audrey, still lives at the property.
San Diego police Lieutenant Andra Brown tells Reuters, "We don't know if it's just a prank because of the recent release of the movie or if someone thinks it's going to be worth a buck or two because it's a lot of (metal). We're just hoping that the suspects return it.
"The Geisel family is just asking that it be returned and they don't want to pursue the matter any further. Which is not to say the police won't."...

It's been a strange and confusing turn of events for documentary filmmaker, Jason Russell, but luckily, his bizarre behavior won't have any long-term consequences. After a new video detailing his strange naked outburst was released over the weekend, many people are wondering why the 33-year-old was only detained, not arrested. "Due to the nature of the detention, he was not arrested," Lt. Andra Brown said. "During the evaluation we learned we probably needed to take him to a medical facility because of statements he was saying." Jason's wife, Danica Russell, blamed the incident on "exhaustion and dehydration" and insisted that Jason has never had a substance abuse or alcohol problem. So what did cause Jason to snap? An...

Though he was there to promote the new Marc Webb-helmed Spider-man reboot, Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, who plays Dr. Curt Connors in the flick, briefly stole the Comic-Con spotlight when he got into a mix-up with security before the panel.
According to The Wrap, Ifans was not happy when a member of his crew encountered some resistance while trying to enter the backstage bowels of the den of geek, Hall H and, as tends to happen when tempers flare, words were exchanged and Ifans ended up pushing a security guard so his friend/posse member could get in.
He still participated in the panel, which was a big hit incidentally, and was issued a citizen's arrest afterwards, for being "aggressive and belligerent" according to Lt. Andra Brown, who claimed "he was…berating everyone from the security staff to the United States of America."

What’s that old Hollywood saying? Any publicity is good publicity, right? Then again, I’m not sure if this is something Sony/Columbia really wants from a major actor in one of their big-time Summer studio films. If nothing else, though, it’s certainly a first — a celebrity getting arrested (then quickly released after being cited) at Comic Con, instead of some wacko fan with a knife. (Ahem.) Welsh actor Rhys Ifans apparently has some issues with the good ol USA, ranting about how “the U.S. sucks” after being momentarily arrested for “shoving a female security guard” on Friday before the “Amazing Spider-Man” panel at the San Diego convention center. The issue? Ifans went out for a smoke along with his entourage, but upon trying to get back into the mythical and notoriously pain-in-the-ass-ish Hall H, couldn’t get all of his (apparently huge) entourage back inside because of improper credentials.

Security at the San Diego Comic-Con has felt the wrath of The Lizard.
Rhys Ifans, who plays the scaly villain in next summer's "The Amazing Spider-Man," got a bit unruly right before he took the stage in Hall H for the "Spider-Man" panel on Friday.
Ifans became irate when a member of his entourage was denied access to the convention due to a lack of proper credentials (if you don't have a badge, you don't get in, no exceptions!). He was allowed to participate in the panel but immediately after was arrested and cited for misdemeanor battery for shoving a female security guard.
"He was aggressive and belligerent," Lt. Andra Brown said of the Welsh actor. "He was... berating everyone from the security staff to the United States of America."

Looks like Rhys Ifans is taking this villain thing a little too seriously. The actor, who will play Peter Parker's nemesis, the Lizard, in the upcoming 'The Amazing Spider-Man' was detained last night at Comic-Con on battery charges.
Earlier reports say that Ifans, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, was arrested, however Sony issued a statement that said he was only detained. "Rhys Ifans was detained by Comic-Con security after a brief incident backstage prior to and immediately following 'The Amazing Spider-Man' panel. Police were notified and a citation was issued to Mr. Ifans who deeply regrets this incident."
TheWrap originally stated that Ifans got angry and shoved a guard when a member of his entourage was unable to enter the hall with no credentials. "He was aggressive and belligerent," Lt. Andra Brown said of the Welsh actor. "He was ... berating everyone...

New York -- Tiny Dancer Films is looking to make strange and beautiful music with best-selling cult author/illustrator Daniel Pinkwater, as Jawal Nga's New York-based banner has optioned the Random House fantasy novel "Lizard Music."
Nga ("Married Life") will produce the irreverent tale of Victor, a boy left home alone by his vacationing parents who discovers a group of lizard musicians on late-night television. With the help of a man with a dancing hen under his hat, Victor travels to Thunderbolt City to find the mysterious creatures.
The 1974 young-adult novel is one of more than 100 titles in print from Pinkwater, a frequent contributor to NPR's "All Things Considered" and the subject of two biographies. A favorite among a generation of fans, "Lizard" is published by Random House imprint Dell Yearling.
In addition to the Rachel McAdams-toplined "Married Life," Nga is executive producing Overture's "Last Chance Harvey," starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.
