Mark Peel, the influential Los Angeles chef who founded Campanile with his ex-wife Nancy Silverton, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 66.
It was reported that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just nine days ago.
Peel appeared on Top Chef Masters and as a judge on Top Chef in 2009 and 2010. Peel also made appearances on Hell’s Kitchen, Knife Fight and Kitchen Nightmares.
Campanile was a favorite among Hollywood power players in the 23 years it was open. The James Beard-winning restaurant stood at 624 South La Brea before closing its doors in 2012. The late, venerated food critic Jonathan Gold wrote of the restaurant, “It is hard to overstate Campanile’s contributions to American cooking. It wasn’t the first fine restaurant in the country to operate with a grill at its heart, but it codified the style, as well as the practice of reinterpreting simple dishes — steak and beans,...

The internet loves it some moms. Kourtney Kardashian, Heather Armstrong, Soleil Moon Frye, and Daphne Brogdon are just a few of the proud parents with recognizable names creating online video content catering to the progenitors of today’s tots, tweens, and teens, a demo that also represents 20% or so of internet users and the sex that makes 85% of purchasing decisions. Deca loves it some moms, too. The online video network and distributor is responsible for some of the internet’s best mother-oriented programming featuring some of the internet’s most high-profile moms (like the ones I mentioned above). Momversation, HerChannel, and the recently launched YouTube network KinCommunity all provide family-friendly and informative content ranging from the (kinda) practical to philosophical. We have lots of questions surrounding this type of content (How does it appeal to advertisers? How does it get made? And, given all the moms online, why isn't there...

New media studio Deca launched its YouTube original network of mom-centric programming called KinCommunity earlier this week. Some of the top female parents in female parent-oriented internet entertainment are sure to make appearances (Deca’s worked with names like Dooce, Soleil Moon Frye, and Daphne Brogdon on other projects), but two notable ladies with relatively new children who you won’t see on Kin are 1) Kourtney Kardashian (her mommy show is on on E! Online) and 2) Nadya Suleman aka Octomom (because her show is headed to Ustream). TMZ reports the mother of 14(!!!) signed a six-figure deal with an unnamed production company to star in her own weekly original web series, streamed live from the comfortable confines of her own 15-person house. The program will air every Sunday and Suleman is slated to discuss topics like "parenting, fitness, diet, nutrition, shopping on a budget and all those crazy rumors." The online...

Watch out Dooce. Move over Soleil Moon Frye. Make way Daphne Brogdon. There’s a new mom in the wide world of video blogging, and she has one helluva disposable income, a famous family (or infamous family, depending on whether or not you like reality TV and basic social units that made it into American pop culture by way of a sibling’s sex tape), the backing of a cable television network, and a pretty great fashion sense. Kourtney Kardashian is the latest mother to get in front of a camera and talk about her adventures in parenting. Of course, those adventures in parenting don’t touch on hot button child-rearing issues or other concerns that may be more familiar to the 99%, but so far focus on multi-colored baby moccasins and the importance of layering for the sake of fashion while living in New York City. And actually, I think that’s okay.

Just don’t call it an upfront. This is a more like a half conference, half show-off of influential content creators and celebs and all hoping to catch the eye of Madison Avenue brands. Digitas and its digital content arm The Third Act hosts its third Digital Content NewFront tomorrow at the Skylight Soho in New York. Even though Shaq can’t be there in person, he still took time to make a video pitch of his web series ideas: Dunk’d, a makeover show with the NBA’s shorter players? Shaqalicious, a Shaq cooking show? Genius. On a slightly more serious note, Daphne Brogdon, the Emcee for the NewFront, talks about FTC regulations and digital content in another video released in advance of the one-day event. Last year saw speeches from Michael Eisner and Al Gore, and as expected this year's speaker lineup is also fairly celeb and influencer...

Who knew that the debate of circumcision was so hot right now? Seriously, this is apparently a hot button issue amongst new parents and parents-to-be. So what better topic to tackle in the launch of Deca's newest original web series, Parents Ask (above). Deca is fast becoming to parenting what Revision3 is to gamers and techies, building up a stable of original web series around an super-focused audience. Their Target-sponsored hit Momversation recently rolled out its 100th episode and Daphne Brogdon's Cool Mom is still going strong. Sure, they also rock World of Warcraft slugfest Project Lore and Boing Boing, but in terms of new properties it's all about the parents. "We know that parents are looking online for answers to the tough questions about raising their kids, so we set out to bring together a panel of the top experts in the country," said Deca's CEO Michael Wayne.
