In the age of streaming, we’ve come to expect that every movie and TV series must be streaming somewhere; Of course, that’s not always the case as one beloved ’90s TV show just made its streaming debut for the first time ever. All six seasons of Northern Exposure are now streaming on Prime Video, marking the first time the series has streamed on any platform.
Northern Exposure starred Rob Morrow as Joel Fleischman, a recently graduated New York City physician who is sent to practice in Anchorage, Alaska, for several years to repay the state of Alaska for underwriting his medical education. Hart of Dixie’s “The Gambler” remains one of the most buzzed-about episodes of Leila Gerstein’s comedy-drama series. The show aired 76 episodes across four seasons on The CW Television Network from September 2011 to March 2015. Hart of Dixie premiered on September 26, 2011, to a cold reception. It drew comparisons to another dramedy, Joshua Brand and John Falsey’s Northern Exposure. Subsequent seasons proved the show had much going for it, so it ran for over three years. While Hart of Dixie Season 1 only managed a 44% approval rating on Rotton Tomatoes, the following seasons received positive ratings that...

Mark Harmon has an impressive resumé spanning decades. The actor is best known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the long-running police procedural NCIS. However, before he led the team at NCIS, he played a crucial role that was ahead of its time. Here’s how Mark Harmon’s role in St. Elsewhere was groundbreaking in the ’80s.

Passing in Review: St. Elsewhere (NBC, Tuesday, 10-11 p.m.) The critics are having a field day. “Well written,” they’ve called it. “Touching.” “Gritty.” And a variety of other words and phrases all meant to tell us that St. Elsewhere, the new hour-long slice-of-life medical drama on NBC, is topnotch television. They’ve compared it to that other prized hour of TV drama, Hill Street Blues. And well they should. Peter Bogdanovich helped usher in a new era in Hollywood with “The Last Picture Show” and “Paper Moon,” films that played homage to the movies from an earlier age, but movies that revolutionized the form with a fresh style and sexual frankness.
But many people recognize Bogdanovich not for his directing, but for his role as Elliot Kupferberg, the urbane, slightly inscrutable psychiatrist to whom Dr. Jennifer Melfi spills her own secrets on “The Sopranos.” Bogdanovich, who died Thursday at age 82, also directed a pivotal fifth season episode of the series, “Sentimental Education,” in which Carmela embarks on an affair with her son’s guidance counselor.
“The Sopranos” creator David Chase spoke with Variety about his long friendship with Bogdanovich and his appreciation for his work as an actor and an artist. Here are his (lightly) edited comments:
I met Peter after I took over a show called “Northern Exposure.

The Writers Guild of America announced the winners of their 71st annual awards on Sunday, February 17 in a ceremony held simultaneously in Los Angeles (Beverly Hilton Hotel) and New York City (Edison Ballroom). Each year these kudos recognize the best writing of the prior calendar year in a plethora of genres including movies and television. Scroll down to see the full list of film and TV winners for the 2019 WGA Awards, with winners designated in gold text.
Keep refreshing/reloading this page as we’ll be updating live.
Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

“Barry” and “Bob’s Burgers” led the way with three Writers Guild of America nominations each, followed by two each for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Succession” and “The Simpsons.”
HBO’s dark comedy “Barry,” starring Bill Hader as a troubled hitman, scored nominations for top comedy series, top new series and top comedy episode with the debut segment “Chapter One: Make Your Mark,” which Hader directed. Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” was nominated for three episodes in the animated category — “Boywatch,” “Just One of the Boyz 4 Now for Now” and “Mo Mommy Mo Problems.” The series is in its ninth season and a “Bob’s Burgers” movie is due out the summer of 2020.

Beloved '90s "fish out of water" series Northern Exposure is heading for a revival at CBS.
THR has noted that original star Rob Morrow is set to return alongside show creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey for a brand new season of Northern Exposure, which will see Morrow's character Dr. Joel Fleischman heading back to the icy cold landscapes of Cicely, Alaska, "for the funeral of an old friend" and "reuniting with some of his former neighbors" while interacting with "a new set of quirky characters."
Brand is currently bashing out a script for a first episode of the proposed revival, and Morrow's charming co-star John Corbett, who went on to play the mistreated Aiden over several seasons of HBO's Sex And The City, is currently on board as a producer.

There’s a famous episode of South Park called “Simpsons Already Did It,” where Butters proposes various schemes that he then has to abandon upon being reminded that someone on The Simpsons had previously tried it. It was a reflection of the innovation and influence of Bart, Homer and friends, and of the long shadow they cast over so many shows that followed them. It’s damn hard for any animated comedy — including The Simpsons itself, which, like South Park, is still making new episodes 16 years after “Simpsons Already Did...

Updated with backstage video: The Americans writers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg went through a long list of thank-you’s after taking the stage to accept their Emmy on Monday for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, including their “diehard, slightly treasonous” fans.

FX’s “The Americans” went out with a bang this spring, drawing rave reviews for its final season. Will the Emmy Awards now give the acclaimed spy drama a farewell salute in terms of a victory for Best Drama Series? Throughout Emmy history we’ve seen various examples of voters giving hugs to departing shows, but only three dramas walked off with the top series award for their final season: “Breaking Bad” (2014), “The Sopranos” (2007) and “Upstairs, Downstairs” (1977).

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

If you’ve been missing Sydney Bristow, better book a ticket to Austin, TX. The Atx Television Festival announced today it will be hosting an “Alias” writers’ room reunion featuring many of the show’s long-time scribes, including Ken Olin, Lawrence Trilling, Sarah Caplan, Monica Breen, Jeff Pinkner, Andre Nemec, and Josh Appelbaum.
Creator J.J. Abrams has yet to be confirmed, but additional panelists will be announced at a later date. Last year, the Atx Festival hosted a writers’ room reunion for “The O.C.” that included creator Josh Schwartz.
Also announced this afternoon was a “Parks and Recreation” community screening. The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
