- He was considered a swimming hopeful for the 1940 Olympic Games, but the Games did not take place due to WWII. He joined the Merchant Navy. His ship was torpedoed by the Japanese in the Indian Ocean. He was taken aboard an enemy vessel and forced to watch as many of his crew-mates were executed. He jumped overboard, dodging rifle bullets, and was eventually rescued by a US ship.
