[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 12 “Allegiance.”] Is it just us, or does it feel like S.W.A.T. is taking us one step closer with each episode to Deacon (Jay Harrington) returning to 20-Squad? And we’re counting those before he officially retired, too! Deacon pitches in to help the team in the season’s penultimate episode (which Harrington also directed), and it’s clear that he’s struggling to not be with his team. He admits he still finds himself waking up in the middle of the night and grabbing his phone, convinced he missed a call. He’s even taken to turning his phone off at night, as he does near the end of this episode after admitting to his wife Annie (Bre Blair), “I think it might have been too soon for me to go back.” The episode also sees Hondo (Shemar Moore) facing backlash...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 8 “Family Man.”] It looks like Deacon (Jay Harrington) has made his mind up about his future with S.W.A.T. after the Luca’s (Kenny Johnson) shooting and subsequent retirement left him questioning things. And while he had been waiting to talk to anyone except for Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit), he and Hondo (Shemar Moore) do have the conversation they probably should have had sooner in the latest episode. It’s all because Deacon’s wife Annie (Bre Blair) spilled to Hondo’s wife Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) about the plans. Just as Hondo’s lamenting the loss of the “core” group—while looking at a photo from back when Chris was still on the team—Nichelle reveals that it really could be “the end of an era” if Deacon does retire, too. At first, Hondo doesn’t think it’s ...

When charting the course of a procedural hybrid — those tricky shows in which a case of the week and a bigger, ongoing narrative arc go hand-in-hand — it’s helpful to be able to point to a show like Paramount+’s Evil (or CBS’ old Person of Interest, if that’s more your flavor) as an example of how to do it right.
Each standalone plot has to be satisfying, while the bigger storyline has to be advanced. Ideally, neither undermines the momentum of the other and, even more ideally, themes in one will inform and enhance those in the other.
Perhaps it’s equally helpful to be able to point to a show that illustrates time and time again how to do a hybrid procedural poorly — a cautionary template.
Credit to Fox, then, for the altruism of releasing Alert: Missing Persons Unit. The new drama isn’t offensive or necessarily outrageous in its badness.

NBC’s “Game of Silence” is getting the cold shoulder from critics after its premiere on Tuesday. The show, which will regularly air Thursdays at 10 p.m., accumulated a 42 percent approval rating from critics counted on Rotten Tomatoes. Continuing a day of pre-upfronts excitement that threatens to Never End, NBC has ordered two more dramas and picked up one of its bubble dramas. Ordered to series are "Game of Silence" and "The Player," while "The Night Shift" has been renewed for a third season. This is also the Sony Pictures Television part of our day, as NBC has a history of package deals with the studio. "The Player" is, intriguingly, NBC's second drama fronted by a "Strike Back" star, joining "Blindspot" with Sullivan Stapleton. Wesley Snipes and Philip Winchester star in this drama about "a former military operative turned security expert who is drawn into a high-stakes game where an organization of wealthy individuals gamble on his ability to stop some of the biggest crimes imaginable from playing out." Charity Wakefield and Damon Gupton also star in the series from creator John Rogers and director Bharat Nalluri. "Game of Silence" stars David Lyons,...

Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Kline and Morgan Freeman, who appear to be in their 60s (because they are – except Freeman who’s 77), have the mind-sets of Grandpa Simpson in the new comedy Last Vegas, embarrassing not one but four Oscar-winning actors too young to play old fogies (Kline is just 65) and too old to be making such fools of themselves in front of the camera. Last Vegas, a comedy about geriatric pals on a Las Vegas bender has nothing new to say about geriatrics or about Vegas. The four childhood pals are gathered in Sin City so millionaire Billy (Douglas ), the one hold-out bachelor of the group, can celebrate before he’s to wed a much younger woman (Bre Blair). Paddy (De Niro) is recently widowed, unable to get over the death of his wife and his life-long rivalry with Billy. Archie (Freeman), recovering from a stroke, is treated...

Hangdog Hangover: Formulaic Comedy Eschews Characterization for Product Placement
Director Jon Turteltaub, whose career is bolstered by a resume of unquestionably mainstream Hollywood fare, perhaps most notably with the National Treasure films (which may eventually and unnecessarily usurp the term ‘trilogy’), teams up with screenwriter Dan Fogelman, author of his own unmitigated clutch of high gloss titles, for Last Vegas, a rather unabashed re-tooling of The Hangover for the 60+ crowd. Of course, the indubitable attraction of the film, despite all its predictable flaws and fantastically maligned realities, is the headlining quartet of four legendary, Oscar winning stars (and, natch, an Oscar winning actress in its lone female role of note), generating enough charm to keep the beat up in this failsafe crowd pleaser made for those with myopic quests for sensible content.

As an unexpected summer treat for fans of last season's late addition, "Happy Endings," a previously unaired episode of the ABC comedy finally premieres Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Just before the delayed debut of "Why Can't You Read Me?" -- originally intended as #5 in the freshman season -- Zap2it caught up with some of the cast to see what's in store. (And remind a few of them that it still hadn't actually been on TV.)
"I'm not sure why that episode didn't air, but there's a new one coming" says Zach Knighton, whose character, Dave, sees the majority of the episode's action. "I make a sex tape with a women's lacrosse coach... which is interesting. She brings it from the field to the bed."
She seems to be bringing a bit of crazy with her as well. The kinky coach (Bre Blair), immediately unsatisfied with her new beau, asks him to promptly spice things up.

Adam Pally as Max on Happy Endings
It's no secret that we're big fans around here of ABC's Happy Endings. That's why I made sure to sit down and do interviews with the entire cast when I was in L.A. for the Television Critics Association Press Tour earlier this month. (Check back next month for those interviews where I talk smack with Adam Pally.)
And it's why we are happy that next week ABC will be airing an extra episode of Happy Endings that the network didn't have room for last spring. (Blame it on Dancing With the Washed Up Has Beens.) On the downside, based on the promo pics provided by the network, it doesn't look like Max (Adam Pally) is going to have much to do.
To which we can only say ... Boo! You better not do that when the show returns in September ABC, or there might be trouble.

Director: John Pogue.
Writers: John Pogue, John Erik Dowdle, Drew Dowdle, Jaume Balaguero, Luiso Berdejo, and Paco Plaza.
Quarantine 2 gives a nod to the previous film, by mentioning an isolated apartment on a television screen. This film takes to the skies for the early parts of this feature, before touching down in a creepy luggage hangar. Released in theatres June 15th, this title is now available on video-on-demand and this horror picture does more than simply put zombies (or zombie-like, if you prefer) on a plane. There is a lot of drama here, some romance and a lot of gory violence. Why stop at giving someone a concussion? The original writers, John Erik Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, return to the sequel and the purpose of this film is to open up the Quarantine universe, to show the infectious possibilities.
Welcome aboard Flight Number 666; this flight is going down!

It's been a little while since we've even been bothered with upcoming infection sequel 'Quarantine 2: Terminal'. It's predecessor 'Quarantine', starring Jennifer Carpenter, was less that interesting in this reviewers eyes at least and so I'm already a little disheartened by the sequelisation. However it looks to be far removed from last years genre-twisting '[Rec] 2' release so we may see some exciting 'in-flight' horror action. The new stills have been released courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films and you can check them out below. Mercedes Masohn, Josh Cooke, George Back, Jason Benjamin and Bre Blair all star in this John Pogue helmed follow-up....
