Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“Even though we thought it was a no-brainer, a lot of people clearly didn’t,” said “Wednesday” co-creator Miles Millar of he and writing partner Al Gough’s years-long experience trying to sell the series that would eventually become Netflix’s newest global phenomenon. “We thought, ‘Oh well maybe it’ll be a YA hit, more like an elevated CW show,’ but then it became much, much more than that. We never anticipated the level of impact and reaction it had.”

While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents twenty-five years ago.
The brand new Addams Family spinoff show Wednesday was on my radar for a while ever since that first teaser that revealed star Jenna Ortega in gothic makeup and completely selling the role right then and there. Plus the fact that Tim Burton would be involved as well as the fact that it would star Christina Ricci – who previously portrayed Wednesday – was incredibly enticing.
A lot of people, however, told me that the show reminded them of an extremely cheesy and cheap CW superhero show. Some even compared it to the abysmally awful Riverdale.

Plot: The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the murder mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
Review: Back in 1991, Tim Burton reluctantly passed on directing The Addams Family due to production on Batman Returns. Barry Sonnenfeld took the reins which led to the film becoming a financial success for Orion Pictures. Despite multiple lackluster live-action sequels, Burton was once again linked to a 2010 stop-motion animated reboot for Universal and Illumination Entertainment. MGM eventually delivered two CGI features which garnered mixed to negative reviews. Now, Tim Burton finally gets to lend his signature style to The Addams Family with Wednesday, a dark series centered on the eldest Addams daughter.

ABC in May delayed a decision on its Bermuda Triangle-themed sci-fi drama Triangle, which was a late, international shoot, until the pilot was finished. The pilot starring Mike Vogel will be wrapping editing this weekend.
There had been speculation the project would not be going forward. But ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke is reserving judgment on its fate until she sees the final product. “I want to wait and make a final decision when the editing of the show is completed, and it has all special effects,” she told Deadline on Monday.
Another ABC hourlong pilot from this past cycle, Heart of Life, which was inspired by the John Mayer song, was not picked up to series in May but was put in redevelopment.
Ben Queen, who wrote the original pilot, has been paired with All American creator April Blair.

Welcome to Beverly Hills, bitch!
That homage to Luke Ward’s iconic quote isn’t actually a part of “All American,” but don’t let its absence dissuade comparisons to Fox’s indelible nighttime soap. “All American” owes a debt to “The O.C.,” especially in its opening episode, when a poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks gets an unexpected chance at a better life from a wealthy family. By the end of the pilot, filled with generous father figures (sans Sandy’s bushy eyebrows) and glamorous L.A. mansions (minus the “Mc”), you better believe audiences of a certain age will be crooning “California, here we cooooooooooome!”
And yet, April Blair’s new CW drama isn’t interested in squeezing in acknowledgements for adult fans still watching teen melodramas. It shouldn’t be. “All American” is building its own story for its own generation, and the...

“All American” may be based on the life of former NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger, but the drama in the show extends well beyond what happens on the field.
Show creator April Blair previously told Variety that the CW drama would be diving into issues of race, class and sexuality for the series about a high school football player torn between his hometown of South Central, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, the new neighborhood and school to which he gets recruited. Blair exited the series just over a week before its scheduled series premiere, leaving the showrunner title to former co-executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll. With Carroll now at the helm, the show will still be heading down that road, as she tells Variety she does not plan to make any sweeping changes in the first season from the “shared vision” on which the writers’ room collaborated months ago.

The last line of showrunner April Blair's All American pitch has always stuck with me: "At this moment, we live in a world where we only see each other's differences, but through this show, we will learn that there is much more that unites us than divides us — we all love, mourn and dream."
When I was first introduced to NFL player Spencer Paysinger through my good friend and colleague Dane Morck, I found myself living April's closing line. Spencer and I were different. For starters, I'll state the obvious, he is a ...

Fittingly for a show about a star football player, the CW’s “All American” comes out of the gate with a degree of hustle that’s startling even by the standards of a network pilot. Within the first few minutes, we’ve learned that Spencer James (the appealing and effective Daniel Ezra) tends to win games through his power of perception. We’ve also learned that much of his life off the gridiron has consisted of forcibly shutting the world out, as when a drive-by shooting mars the end of a game for his predominantly black high school in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles. And before we’ve learned too much more about Spencer’s life, we’re shown exactly how it’s about to change.

The CW’s new drama “All American,” based on the real-life experiences of ex-NFL player Spencer Paysinger, centers on a a football player from South Central Los Angeles who transfers to a Beverly Hills high school. But the show cares more about telling stories of the human experience than specific football plays.
“While we seem nothing alike, at heart we have a very common story,” creator April Blair said of herself and Paysinger at the Paley Fall TV Preview Saturday. “In today’s world of division, I thought that was a really important story to tell — black/white, rich/poor, gay/straight — that we’re all, on a cellular level, far more similar than we are different.”
Blair says the show will combine and themes found in fellow football drama “Friday Night Lights” and hip-hop film “Straight Outta Compton” in a tale of two cities and a boy in between them.

Snowpiercer is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, It centers on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train that circles the globe. Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival are questioned in the riveting television adaptation. Paunovic will play Bojan Boscovic, a large, fearsome looking man with frostbite scars and stumped ears. Bojan is a Breachworker, performing one of the most dangerous jobs on the train. He’s used to the cold and hazards of the job, comfortable enough to joke about his life being at risk.

The CW’s upcoming football drama “All American,” based on the real-life experiences of former NFL player Spencer Paysinger, offers a lot of opportunity to dive into topical storytelling, from tales of race and class, to the divide over athletes taking a knee during the national anthem, getting special treatment and locker room culture.
“We’re trying not to be too preachy out of the gate, but yes [we’re dealing in those things],” showrunner April Blair tells Variety.
The third episode of the show, which centers on Spencer, an African-American high school football player from South Central Los Angeles, Calif. who gets the opportunity to play for a Beverly Hills high school, will be an “issue show” which deals with racism. But at the center of it is not just Spencer (Daniel Ezra) but also his new teammate Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) and their coach Billy (Taye Diggs), who also happens to be Jordan’s father.

All American is not Friday Night Lights, and definitely not The Oc, creators of CW’s new high school football series insisted when TV critics asked at TCA.
“What makes this different is it’s a tale of two cities, unlike the Oc where [Ryan Atwood] left and never went back to Chino. We go back every week, writer/Ep April Blair said.
“We try to maintain the two worlds. It’s not The Oc model where we take him out” of South Central. “This is about a boy straddling two worlds…He does not leave his family behind. He struggles to maintain his life in both places,” she said, saying it will be a 60-40 split in terms of time in each community.
