GÖTEBORG, Sweden: “All the Sins”’ Finnish co-writers and creators Mika Ronkainen and Merja Aakko, winners of last year’s Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for outstanding Nordic screenplay, are developing for Mrk Matila Röhr Productions an adoption drama set between Finland and Guatemala.
Based on a true story, the six-part series “Act of Telling” (a working title) will examine child adoption through the story of a young Finnish couple and their Guatemala-born son. The respectable father has harbored a secret for seven years -a crime he committed when he travelled alone for the adoption. When a journalist friend starts to ask questions about the son’s biological parents, the mystery threatens to come to light.
Producer Ilkka Matilä said that Finnish public broadcaster Yle has ordered the concept from the writing duo. He’s now looking for a “potential co-production partner who could facilitate the Guatemala shoot.”

The Film:
The American should have been called, The Pragmatic American. Jack in the USA/Edward abroad (George Clooney) is well-paid assassin on the run from some Swedes, who have attempted to kill him. Do not be late for this feature’s opening: Jack kills his attackers nonchalantly during the first scene in the film. Then he flees to Italy where much of the film was shot to meet up with Larry, his contact. As Edward, he speaks poor Italian and walks down ancient cobblestone streets in the village of Abruzzo (interestingly enough and surely not by accident, Hemingway uses Abuzzo as the setting for his Wwi novel A Farewell to Arms). While on the run, he continues to work by constructing a rifle out of mostly auto parts for another contract killer Mathilde (Thelka Reuten). A craftsman, Edward works with precision; he is fun to watch as he snaps pieces into a compact rifle.

This is the Pure Movies review for The American, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli, Irina Björklund, Björn Granath, Johan Leysen, Filippo Timi and Samuli Vauramo. Written by Dan Higgins. This is a literary adaptation of Martin Booth’s A Very Private Gentleman and, as the title suggests, Clooney plays a character that is both enigmatic and elusive. In fact, he hardly talks. He has no women in his life and, from the opening scene, it is easy to see why this is the case. A priest attempts to befriend Jack (who now goes by Edward), while he finds company, solace and sex with a local prostitute called Clara. It is evident though that he is being tracked and his past seemingly instructs him to trust nobody and be suspicious of everyone, including people that he starts relationships with.

Movie Review: “The American”; Cast: George Clooney, Irina Björklund, Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Gobbi; Director: Anton Corbijn; Rating: **** – a sculpture in time.
Cinema, as Andrei Tarkovsky has elucidated, is a temporal medium, by which he meant that a filmmaker sculpts time through images to evoke emotions in the viewer. It is heartening to see a filmmaker get it right in his first attempt. “The American” is a film of quiet restraint meant to be watched for the beauty of its aesthetics.
Cinematic tension is not necessary in a fast-paced story and “The American” shows why. Jack (Clooney) is an assassin, who after a bid on his life, hides in a small town in Italy and.

In the middle of the wintry landscape of a snow-covered cabin in the middle of Sweden, George Clooney contemplates with a lovely and vivacious companion (Irina Björklund). Having just spent the night together with only their bodies and a log fire to keep them warm, the two set off to a remote locale for a hike to let their lungs catch up to their hearts. Suddenly, they are ambushed, and Clooney’s character must reveal his deadly talents. He’s been found, and needs to take out the men sent to kill him. Worse yet, he realizes he has to disappear and leave behind what life he’s made. Clooney plays Jack in The American, a throwback film made for the cineastes, about a professional killer and know-it-all extraordinaire, assigned to do one last job while he hides from the Swedes in small countryside of Italy. Jack’s point man,...

A sublime thriller, “The American” opens quietly among the snow-covered forests of Sweden. Jack, a bearded, salt-and-pepper-haired George Clooney, and his lover Ingrid (beautiful Finnish actress Irina Björklund) enjoyed an idyllic existence, broken by the appearance of assassins.
Following Ingrid's death, Jack, a killer-for-hire himself as well as a master weapons maker, flees to Italy and accepts one final assignment from his contact Larry: the construction of a special rifle for the mysterious Belgian woman Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). While holed up in a small town, Jack surprises himself by seeking out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursuing romance with a local prostitute Clara (Violante Placido).
Rife with predictable plot elements, director Anton Corbijn (“Control”) smartly relies on fantastic acting to drive the low-key film. The understated Clooney expertly creates an air of gravitas. Veteran character actor Bonacelli (“Mission: Impossible III”) successfully elevates the clichéd role of Father Benedetto.

Sometimes, no matter where you travel, your work comes with you. That's the premise behind the upcoming thriller, The American, which sees George Clooney as an assassin traveling in Italy who finds himself a potential target when he falls for a beautiful woman (Violante Placido). The latest clip shows Clooney taking a wintery stroll with his friend Ingrid (Irina Björklund) when Clooney runs into "work trouble," a job that Ingrid wasn't aware of.

The lesson in today's clip from "The American" is simple: don't f--k with George Clooney. The Anton Corbijn-directed thriller stars the popular actor as a retiring assassin who just wants to finish his last mission and be done with the life. Too bad for him, the life won't let go so easily.
In the below clip, Clooney is out for a snowy stroll with his new friend Ingrid (Irina Björklund). She doesn't know what his background is, but she's about to get a taste of it. The clip ends before he has to explain himself; my guess is he takes the "that dude made fun of 'Batman & Robin'" defense.
I sure do like the look of this movie. It's out on September 1, next Wednesday, to kick off the post-summer season of Oscar bait contenders. Will this be one of them? Who knows, but I'm sure curious to see it!
