While a powerful individual, Little Carmine came to be known as a moron and tended to serve as comic relief on the show. Some fans, however, continue to theorize that he may have been more clever than he let on.

While he regularly said foolish things and often seemed to make problems worse, Little Carmine also appeared to personally come out ahead in the end.

Yogi Berra, perhaps the greatest catcher in history, is quoted in Carson Lund’s “Eephus,” a movie about players who, unlike Berra, are never going to trouble the Baseball Hall of Fame’s induction committee. To homage so lofty a legend in so humble a film is a pretty big swing. But one likes to think Berra would be tickled by the shout-out in this lovely little sundowner movie, during which a bunch of middle-aged casual players use the excuse of the last game of their season — and perhaps ever — to valiantly fight the dying of the light. After all, wasn’t he the guy who coined “The future ain’t what it used to be”?

The future sure looks different, suddenly, for the Adler’s Paint and Riverdogs adult-league teams who have played regularly at Soldier’s Field, the public pitch serving their small New England town, for years.

Most baseball movies are not, per se, about baseball. To take some examples: The Natural is about a prodigy overcoming trauma; Eight Men Out is about greed and corruption; Bad News Bears is a foul-mouthed coming-of-age flick; Bull Durham is all about Kevin Costner’s sex appeal; Moneyball carries the sport into the information age; and Field of Dreams (Costner, again) is haunted by the ghosts of baseball past.

First-time director Carson Lund clearly had this in mind when he made his feature debut Eephus, a movie steeped in nostalgia for the game itself, as well as what it represents for a bunch of men past their prime: the long afternoons in the sun, the trash-talking at the plate, the brewskies in the cooler and the kind of camaraderie you can only find in the dugout.

Although attributed to the late Major League Baseball Hall of Famer/wit/pitchman Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, one could imagine Albert Maysles, Frederick Wiseman or other legends of the observational/vérité strand of documentary positing this as a driving theme of a keynote address. Such is the understated prowess of this often misunderstood cultural icon, whose considerable achievements both on and off the field warrant a worthy documentary profile.

Enter filmmaker Sean Mullin, whose canon has consisted primarily of fiction features. Back in 2018, his producer, Peter Soboloff, was impressed with Rbg, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about television icon Fred Rogers, and he suggested that Mullin consider Yogi Berra as a protagonist. Soboloff then introduced Mullin to the Berra family.

MLB Network’s “Prime 9” countdown show is returning to the schedule.

The program, which has been off the programming list since 2015, is set to return on Monday, December 11, with noted sportscaster Bob Costas as the host. During the show, MLB Network offers the “nine best” in a wide array of different categories, including the nine best players at each on-field position in the sport.

““When MLB Network started in 2009, and for the first few years after that, Prime 9 was a signature program for the network. There were dozens of various categories, but eventually the inventory ran its course But in the decade-plus since then, new players, new baseball issues, new records, new “curses” broken and extended and more have emerged,” says Costas in a statement. “All sports have histories, debates, and generational comparisons. But baseball has the richest history of any American sport. And has more ongoing debates and “all-time lists” than any other sport.

The creatives behind this year’s awards contenders convened for a series of conversations about their craft during Variety FYC Fest on Dec. 6 in Los Angeles.

Stan Lee was born Stanley Lieber in New York City way back in 1922, and as a teenager accidentally became a writer at Timely Comics, a small rival to Superman’s National Comics in the late 1930s. Post the war he would cement his legacy, convince the publishers to change the company to Marvel in the early 1960s, and began a revolution – with artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko – that would become the Marvel Universe.

It doesn’t get any more delightful than the surprising, warm documentary about beloved baseball legend Yogi Berra, It Ain’T Over. Surprising? Yes, as this well-made bio documentary looks back at Yogi’s outstanding baseball career as player, something overshadowed and even forgotten by fans, as he became best known as a lovable pop culture icon and for his “Yogi-isms,” quotable phrases like “it’s deja vu all over again,” “when you come to a fork in the road, take it” and “it ain’t over until it’s over.” Yet Yogi Berra was a baseball player whose record put him among the greats of the game, As actor and baseball fan Billy Crystal put it, Yogi was “the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball.”

The numbers are impressive, jaw-dropping even, considering what we might think we know about Yogi Berra.

This is what strong word of mouth looks like: Although the opening weekends (plus previews) for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” were nearly the same, that’s where the resemblance ends for the Marvel titles. The first 10 days for “GOTG3” in the U.S./Canada stands at $213.2 million; “Ant-Man” grossed $213.9 in its entire domestic run.

That’s a huge relief for Disney. “GOTG3” fell shy of the $292.6 million grossed by “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in the same time period last year, but that film fell 67 percent its second weekend. The “GOTG3” drop represented 49 percent.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up all rights in North America, Latin America and European Europe (excluding Hungary) to the Ilker Çatak drama The Teachers’ Lounge, which won both the Europa Cinemas Label award and the Cicae Arthouse Cinema award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

The news comes just a day after the SPC acquisition announcement for The Miracle Club, a Dublin-shot feature starring Laura Linney, Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates.

Sony Pictures Classics said it’s planning to release Sean Mullin’s documentary on baseball superstar Yogi Berra, It Ain’t Over, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on May 12, expanding over following weeks.

The film is produced by Natalie Metzger, Matt Miller, Peter Sobiloff and Mike Sobiloff with Vanishing Angle and Off Media, and executive produced by Lindsay Berra. It world premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in the Spotlight Documentary section.

Like a couple dozen other well-established regional fests across the U.S., Nantucket is navigating the most challenging operating environment in its 27 years of existence. Today, it announced its annual slate of awards, topped by the Feature Film Audience Award winner, It Ain’t Over. I’m a Red Sox fan of three-plus decades.

The context feels necessary before I admit that Sean Mullin’s documentary It Ain’t Over, focusing on Yankee great Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, actually made me a little bit teary by the end of its 98-minute running time.

Does the doc, premiering to what will presumably be an affectionate hometown audience at the Tribeca Film Festival, have flaws of structure and focus? Heavens yes.

But does it play convincingly, even to a specifically Yankees-hostile critic? Indeed, it does.

The 2022 Tribeca Festival today announced its lineup of feature and short narrative, documentary, and animated films. This year’s festival runs June 8–19 and will open, as previously announced, with the Jennifer Lopez documentary “Halftime.”

The features program spans 10 categories and showcases 110 feature films and 16 online premieres from 151 filmmakers across 40 countries. The lineup includes 88 world premieres, two international premieres, seven North American premieres, two U.S. premieres, and 11 New York premieres. There are 32 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects, and 50 first-time directors. More than 64 percent (81) of the feature films are directed by female, Bipoc, and LGBTQ+ filmmakers: 46 percent (58) female directors, 34percent (43) Bipoc directors, and 8 percent (10) LGBTQ+ directors.

The 2022 Tribeca Festival will feature world premieres of Ray Romano’s directorial debut “Somewhere in Queens” and “Corner Office,” a workplace satire starring Jon Hamm and Danny Pudi, among many others.

Tribeca announced on Tuesday its full lineup of features and shorts, including documentaries and animated films. In all, 110 feature films will play at the festival from 151 filmmakers across 40 countries, with 88 being world premieres.

Romano also stars in his film “Somewhere in Queens” alongside Laurie Metcalf, Tony Lo Bianco, Sebastian Maniscalco and Jennifer Esposito. The film is about an Italian-American dad from Queens who gets increasingly involved in ensuring his son’s high school basketball success. “Corner Office” is directed by Joachim Back and stars Hamm as a straight-laced employee who retreats to a blissfully empty corner office to get away from his lackluster colleagues, only to find that his move upsets them immensely.

Netflix has emerged the winner of a bake-off for a documentary about the life and times of media mogul Martha Stewart.

Oscar-nominated director R.J. Cutler had been shopping a sizzle reel of the all-access look at the history of America’s preeminent hostess in recent weeks. Netflix closed the deal late last week, according to insiders.

While specifics are still unknown, the film will foreseeably follow Stewart’s early life in Jersey City as a babysitter to famed New York Yankees players Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra (legend has it some of her first ever party-planning gigs were for their kids), to teen model and eventual media titan. The massive growth of her Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia empire and 2004 prison stint for insider trading will also presumably be on the table.

Updated 1:01 p.m. Pt: With 9.195 million total viewers, Game 1 of the 2020 World Series is officially the least-watched World Series game of all time. The Rays vs. Dodgers’ Tuesday opener on Fox drew a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, according to final Nielsen numbers.

The 2.4 rating in the key demo is not a new all-time low for a World Series game. Game 4 of 2019 had a 2.3 rating, for a recent (lower-rated) example. It is, however, tied for an all-time ratings low among opening games. The last 2.4 rating from a World Series Game 1 came in 1999.

When adding streaming and Fox Deportes, the overall viewership was 9.48 million viewers, which still puts it behind the 9.8 million that watched Game 3 between the Rays and Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, the previous low.

Nearly a week after Regis Philbin’s death, son-in-law and The Good Place creator Mike Schur memorialized the legendary TV host in an emotional Twitter thread.

Schur, married to Philbin’s daughter writer-producer J.J. Philbin, shared on Friday that he has had difficulty expressing the impact the beloved Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host’s career has had on the entertainment world.

“It’s too huge. You can’t wrap your arms around it. He literally holds the Guinness Book Record for most hours on TV,” the Emmy-winning TV producer and writer tweeted.

“For decades, Regis was always there, on TV, chatting and complaining and making people laugh. He needed no explanation,” Schur continued. He said that articulating the span and significance of Philbin’s career has been tough. But Memorabilia and old documents found in the late Hollywood star’s office do just the job, the producer said.

The Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were shot in the St. Louis region or were written, directed, or produced by St. Louis-area residents or by filmmakers with strong local ties who are now working elsewhere. Because of the Covid-19 health crisis, the Showcase will be presented virtually in 2020.
