The Union Solidarity Coalition — founded over the summer by a group of writer-directors moved to support crewmembers amid the strike — launched an eBay auction last week with lots so unique, it seems they were dreamed up in a writers room. And the bids have been rolling in fast and thick.
A sampling of the offerings and current bids (as of publication time) include dinner with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross ($10,200); the cast of Bob’s Burgers singing a custom song ($7,200); Natasha Lyonne helping solve the New York Times Sunday crossword via Zoom ($6,100); Lena Dunham painting a mural in your home ($5,100); John Lithgow painting a watercolor portrait of your dog ($4,450); a pottery class with Busy Philipps in New York ($3,500); Adam Scott walking your dog in L.A. for one hour ($2,500); a Zoom with Barry Jenkins and Nicholas Britell ($1,250); and a relationship advice squabble over Zoom with Rosemarie Dewitt and Ron Livingston ($1,136).

Studios are seemingly investing a lot of money in AI and a job post at Netflix shows the streamer is looking to fill an AI Producer Manager role that could pay up to $900K a year.
One of the biggest issues that the striking guilds, WGA and SAG-AFTRA, have with AMPTP is the lack of protections against AI.
“Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence is powering innovation in all areas of the business. From helping us buy and create great content, helping members choose the right title for them through personalization, to optimizing our payment processing and other revenue-focused initiatives,” reads the job description.
It brings to mind an episode of Black Mirror’s most current season titled “Joan Is Awful,” which depicts an actress struggling with the studio after signing a contract that gave her digital likeness away.
Rob Delaney, who starred in the episode, gave his thoughts to The Intercept...

On day 67 of The Writers Guild of America strike, the cast and creatives behind three popular shows joined the picket lines across Los Angeles.
Bright and early at 9:30 a.m. over at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, there was an Ugly Betty reunion with stars Ana Ortiz and Chris Gorham joining writers Brian Tannen, Gabrielle Stanton, Sheila Lawrence, Chris Black, Henry Myers, Cameron Litvack and Tracy Poust on the special picket.
Ugly Betty, based on the hit Spanish-language novela Betty La Fea, aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2010. America Ferrera portrayed the titular Betty Suarez, an unconventional beauty whose unique sense of style doesn’t preclude her from landing a gig at a top fashion magazine. The project was developed by Silvio Horta for ABC and also starred Mark Indelicato, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Becki Newton and Michael Urie.

Renowned alumni of the Jeffersonian Institute pulled out their security badges and patches to assemble Friday morning for a lively “Bones” writers strike reunion picket outside Fox Studios.
The gathering of writers, actors, directors and crew members from the Fox drama series proved once again that “Bones” was one of TV’s happiest sets during its 12-season run from 2005-2017. Star Emily Deschanel, who played forensic anthropologist Temperance “Bones” Brennan on the procedural, was in attendance at the picket held on Day 67 of Writers Guild of America strike. So were series showrunners Hart Hanson, Stephen Nathan, Jonathan Collier and Michael Peterson and writer-producers including Liz Benjamin, Dean Lopata, Janet Lin and Karine Rosenthal.
“All the truisms of why a show is a happy, non-toxic place is why ‘Bones’ was such a happy place,” Hanson told Variety. “Who is No. 1 on the call sheet? What is that person like? What is No.

For many members of the Writers Guild of America, this strike has become a family affair, and seven writers who are members of the group “WGA Moms” have opened up to TheWrap in an exclusive panel to discuss the unique challenges of raising kids while on the picket lines.
Liz Benjamin, co-executive producer on “Dead to Me,” helped organize a “family day” on the picket lines in front of Netflix’s production offices on Monday. She said it was in part to allow striking writer parents to network with each other but also to show to the public the reality of what most writers’ actual lives are like.
“I started in this business pregnant,” Benjamin said. “My very first staff job, I found out I was pregnant and I waited five...

On May 2, the Writers Guild of America called for a strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fell through. The first week was robust with picketing in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta, with the striking shutting down productions. As the strike enters a second week, Variety is still reporting from the picket lines.
Day 7 (May 8) Netflix (Los Angeles)
*Family and Kid Day at the Netflix picket drew a huge crowd, seemingly showing that Week 2 crowds would be as robust as Week 1.
*Variety spoke with Michele Mulroney, vice president of the WGA West, on the picket line outside of Netflix headquarters in Hollywood about what AMPTP needs to do to resume the contract talks.
“I’m feeling strong, because our members are feeling strong,” she said. “Our members are very educated on the reasons that we’re out and the reasons we are walking.

Fox Television Studios has inked a first-look deal with veteran TV and film producer Elizabeth Guber Stephen, who will develop and produce cable projects through her Gables Media banner. Under the deal, Stephen and FtvS have set two projects. One is hourlong USA drama series Timeline, from best-selling author Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Raised By Wolves book series), about a female astronaut who, upon returning to Earth from a six-month mission, discovers that someone has altered her past and, in effect, rewritten her entire life. Set up at Fox and based on the 2011 film from writer-director-producers Aaron Salgado and Jaydee Freixas, Magic City Memoirs follows three wealthy, influential families whose patriarchs came to Miami 30 years ago as Cuban refugees, and whose sons are now facing the fallout from the secrets their fathers have harbored in order to obtain the “American dream.” The pilot is written by Liz Benjamin (Bones). “Elizabeth Stephen...

The Blacklist, Season 1, Episode 19: “The Pavlovich Brothers”
Written by Elizabeth Benjamin
Directed by Paul Edwards
Airs Monday nights at 10 pm Est on NBC
This week the confrontation between the Keen couple finally occurs, and with that comes answers to a long gestating mystery. The Pavlovich Brothers, who kidnapped the daughter of a general in the pilot of the show, make a return to kidnap a woman involved in a chemical weapons project called White Fog. Both plotlines help to remind us how far Lizzie and Red have come in their partnership and also spotlight how much they rely on each other.
The best part of the episode is the interview and subsequent fight that takes place in the Keen home after Tom is brought to Liz by the Pavlovich Brothers. Ryan Eggold, who plays Tom Keen, does a strong job of not only showing the darker side of his character in this episode,...

The annual Bird’s Eye View Film Festival was held in London from 8th March to 17th. This year saw a major theme exploring women’s role in gothic and horror cinema with live accompaniments to silent classics, a screening of Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark and a specially commissioned score and live performance by Grammy award-winner Imogen Heap to Germaine Dulac’s The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928).
Bloody Women: From Gothic To Horror wasn’t the only thing going down with screenings, workshops, seminars and talks on the role women play in the medium we all know and love. In an art form still ruled largely by men it’s nice to see a film festival celebrate the female perspective, and not only that, deliver some downright brilliant films.
Below is a report on a collection of films and events we attended this great year.
