I first heard about FX’s “Archer” in the ready room of Vaq-135, a navy squadron who were serving an interminable deployment aboard an aircraft carrier somewhere near Midway Island. (This sounds very much like a humblebrag that Sterling Archer would obnoxiously drop into conversation). It was 2010, and the pilots had lost whatever idealism they’d once had during an endless deployment that had them flying 12-hour missions from the Persian Gulf to Afghanistan. I started hearing the officers stage-whisper “danger zone” whenever one of them got called in to see the commanding officer over some minor fuck-up or summoned to the flight deck in the pitch black of an ocean night.
Now, famously, “Danger Zone” is a Kenny Loggins song that plays a significant role in the homoerotic original recipe “Top Gun,” the urtext of naval aviators. But the way the pilots were saying it suggested they were taking the piss.

I’m a Red Sox fan of three-plus decades.
The context feels necessary before I admit that Sean Mullin’s documentary It Ain’t Over, focusing on Yankee great Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, actually made me a little bit teary by the end of its 98-minute running time.
Does the doc, premiering to what will presumably be an affectionate hometown audience at the Tribeca Film Festival, have flaws of structure and focus? Heavens yes.
But does it play convincingly, even to a specifically Yankees-hostile critic? Indeed, it does.
Mullin’s central thesis is that Yogi Berra has gone from one of the most adored and acclaimed athletes of his generation to a figure whose actual on-field prowess has maybe been lost to time — usurped in part by the pilfering animated bear who shares much of his name, his baseball achievements obscured by his famous...

Tommy Lasorda, the colorful, quotable and revered Los Angeles Dodgers legend who managed the team to two World Series title and four National League pennants in the 1970s and ’80s, died today at 93. The Dodgers announced that the Hall of Famer “suffered a sudden cardiopulmonary arrest at his home” on Thursday night.
Lasorda had been sent home this week after being hospitalized for seven weeks in Orange County, spending much of that time in intensive care.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued the following statement:
“Tommy Lasorda was one of the finest managers our game has ever known. He loved life as a Dodger. His career began as a pitcher in 1949 but he is, of course, best known as the manager of two World Series champions and four pennant-winning clubs. His passion, success, charisma and sense of humor turned him into an international celebrity, a stature that he used to grow our sport.

Joe Morgan, the Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Fame second baseman who powered the team’s legendary Big Red Machine era of the 1970s before co-anchoring with Jon Miller ESPN’s must-watch Sunday Night Baseball for 21 seasons, died Sunday at his home in Danville, CA. He was 77.
A family spokesperson the cause of death was nonspecified polyneuropathy. He’d had a bone-marrow transplant in 2016.
Nicknamed Little Joe (he stood 5-foot-7), Morgan, along with Reds teammates Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, was a key force in the team’s World Series championships in 1975 and 1976; he was named National League Most Valuable Player both of those seasons.
A 10-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, Morgan also was a stolen-base specialist, swiping 40 or more bags in nine of his 22 seasons. He also was known for his habit of cocking his left elbow up and down as he awaited a pitch.

Exclusive: The travails, injuries and controversies that led the New York Mets to cut ties with one-time can’t-miss pitcher Matt Harvey reminds how rare the career of Mets great Tom Seaver really was. Edward Burns, the Brothers McMullen director who is a lifelong Mets fan, is working with the Hall of Fame pitcher to direct a feature documentary on Seaver’s career and his role with the fabled 1969 Miracle Mets. That was as unlikely as man landing on the moon, the year when a franchise lovable in futility won 100 games and beat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series.
“Tom has always been one of my idols,” said Burns, a Queens native. “It’s an honor and a thrill to bring his story to the screen as the Mets prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their stunning 1969 World Series championship.”

Time Life has released "Bob Hope: Entertaining the Troops", a priceless presentation of Hope's famous Uso shows for American troops serving overseas. The two programs, presented uncut, are a wonderful time capsule of the era. At the time the Vietnam War was raging and the only glimpses concerned Americans got of the fighting men were grim images squeezed into the half-hour evening news during this pre-cable TV era. Thus, Hope's merry band of entertainers allowed some welcome views of the servicemen getting a rare and well-deserved laugh from the songs, skits and stand up presented by Hope and his troupe. Not surprisingly, the biggest reactions are afforded to the sex symbols who traveled with him. In this case, they include Connie Stevens, Lola Falana, Romy Schneider and Ursula Andress. Admittedly, the humor creaks with age but the spirit and good will is timeless. One of the...

The show centered on a proper British butler (Christopher Hewett) adjusting to life working for the Owens family of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. And for six seasons, characters on the show and the people watching them chose not to think too much about how strange it was that a middle-class family would have a live-in butler. Major League Baseball’s all-time hit leader is hoping for one more — in the form of a TV show. EW has learned that TLC has begun production on a reality series starring Pete Rose, the polarizing 17-time All-Star who was banned from his beloved sport for gambling on games while he was a manager for the Cincinnati Reds.
With a working title of Pete Rose and Kiana Kim Family Project, the show will follow the 71-year-old Rose and his thirtysomething model fiancée Kiana Kim (who has posed for Playboy) through their daily lives as they try to blend their families.

Milwaukee - Henry Winkler is not the Fonz.
He played the coolest guy on Happy Days for eleven seasons. But he doesn’t wear a leather jacket, ride a motorcycle or fix things by bumping them with his elbow. He’s not even Italian. He’s got a life that has gone beyond the Fonz. There’s probably a generation that knows him better for Adam Sandler movies and Arrested Development. On a May evening at the Quail Ridge bookstore in Raleigh, there is a group of kids under 12 years old that know him as the author of the Hank Zipzer books (along with co-writer Lin Oliver).
Many stars of the ’70s sell their tawdry memoirs of behind the scenes perversions. Winkler created a young adult book series that taps into grade school life instead of the action in Arnold’s bathroom. We’ll have to wait for lurid tales of the Hooper triplets.

Growing up in as a young black male in New York City one of the recurring questions on the racial litmus test pertained to my love of baseball. There was a period of time when there wasn't a stat or obscure fact that I couldn't cite. When friends and I debated greatest teams of all-time I was the only one to routinely invoke Josh Gibson's name as catcher for this all-century team in lieu of more popular players such as Yogi Berra or Johnny Bench. Therefore whenever friends or classmates questioned my blackness, and by extension whether I had the necessary toughness to survive as a black male in New York because of my affinity for baseball, a supposedly white boy sport, I was able to confidently disregard...

Chicago – Universal Home Video is releasing a wave of titles timed for Father’s Day gifts. Some of their choices - “Field of Dreams,” “Fletch” - seem like logical picks for a better HD daddy day than another striped tie while others seem chosen purely because they have the word “Men” or “Man” in the title - “Children of Men,” “Cinderella Man,” “Inside Man”.
Most are pretty good and some are great. Pick your favorite and give it to your Blu-Ray pop.
“Inside Man” will be released on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009.
The other five titles were released on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009.

The talks of George Clooney returning to "ER" have been bouncing up and down since co-stars Noah Wyle and Anthony Edwards decide to go back and suggest their pal to do similarly. This time, the demand has been risen particularly since "ER" is going to wrap up on April 2, and executive producer John Wells says that it is possible.
Wells told E! that should Clooney decides to show his face on the show, then it will be a last minute call because he "loves practical jokes". He said, "George is very busy, he's very handsome...(and) we've talked about (him coming back) a couple of times. It's George. We'll be shooting down there at the end, and if he comes by and says he wants to do something, he'll do it."
George Clooney will make an appearance at "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" tonight, January 19 after years of pursuit from host Ellen DeGeneres.

George Clooney has made U.S. talk show host Ellen De Generes' dreams come true - by appearing on her show at long last.
The comedienne has led a lengthy campaign to get her Warner Bros. studio neighbour on her programme ever since she moved to the Burbank, California, lot last year.
Her techniques have included sending Kate Hudson, Dolly Parton, marching bands, sexy male strippers and hot models over to his production office.
She even asked Clooney's pal Brad Pitt for advice when he was a guest on her show late last year.
But Clooney was never in his office when either the comedienne or her guests called.
DeGeneres then installed a mousetrap-style device above the door of Clooney's office, in the hopes of catching her man - and she created an alert system on her set, so she'd know whenever Clooney was in the building.
The alert went off in the middle of Friday's show as Clooney's car pulled up outside.
And, after taking advice from Clooney's former E.R. co-star Noah Wyle, DeGeneres arranged for Cincinnati Reds baseball icons Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan to lure the movie star into her studio.
Clooney taped his first appearance on the daytime show on Friday, and admitted he was starting to get a hard time from employees and Ellen fans for not showing up.
He says, "Informing is not what I would call what my office has been doing to me. (They're) complaining. They were a little concerned when the marching band came.
"People do come up to me all the time and say, 'What's wrong with you, why don't you go do Ellen's show...?' I've been busy."
The actor admitted he's been keeping check on the lengths DeGeneres has been going to to get him to appear, adding: "You gotta love Dolly Parton coming in."
Clooney's chat with DeGeneres and his meeting with Morgan and Bench will air on Monday.

All season long, since moving into new headquarters on the Warner Bros. lot, Ellen DeGeneres has had one goal in mind: get George Clooney on the show. She even enlisted the aid of Brad Pitt – which didn't help much. Finally, with her New Year's motto "George is Mine in '09," the talk-show host got what she was after, with Clooney's appearance set to air Monday. "Have people been informing you every step of the way of what we've done [to get you here]?" the ever-demure DeGeneres asks Clooney. "Informing me is not really what I would call what my office has been doing. Ah,...
