Overcommitted "Method" acting doesn't have to be a lifelong choice — just ask Austin Butler. The actor who famously gained an accent he had trouble losing to play Elvis Presley in "Elvis" can now be seen in theaters in a totally different role in "Dune: Part Two," and he says he tried to keep some work-life balance this time around.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Butler was asked if he chooses to stay in a "dark place" even after the cameras stop rolling to play a dark character. In "Dune: Part Two," the actor donned a bald cap and a serious scowl to play Feyd-Rautha, the ambitious Siridar-Baron who challenged Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides to a duel in the new film. It would've been tough to keep the mindset of Feyd-Rautha going 24/7 even if Butler had chosen to, but he told the LA Times he made the...

Sebastian Bach has opened up about a potential reunion with his former band Skid Row — a hot topic considering the group is currently on the hunt for a new singer.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Baz was asked about the possibility of a Skid Row reunion. It’s worth noting that the interview appears to have been conducted just prior to Swedish singer Erik Grönwall announcing his exit from Skid Row last week.

“For me, doing three albums with Skid Row, I was just getting started,” Bach said of his original run in the group. “I didn’t think it would be over and done with so quick.”

Jake Gyllenhaal was one of the top contenders to play Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, and although the role went to Christian Bale, director Christopher Nolan called Gyllenhaal personally to tell him he didn’t get the role.
“To [Nolan’s] credit and to Baz [Luhrmann’s] credit, both of those directors called me personally to tell me [I didn’t get the role],” Jake Gyllenhaal said on The Howard Stern Show. “And they will tell you why. When you get that far, there’s a real legitimacy to you potentially getting something. It’s not like they’re going, ‘Oh, thanks so much.’ They are going, ‘I saw these aspects of you that I really wanted in the role and are wonderful, but in the end I ended up moving this way because it matches better with this person who is opposite you or would be opposite you. Jake Gyllenhaal appreciated Christoper Nolan and Baz Luhrmann phoning him personally to say why he didn't land roles in their movies. The 'Road House' star was gutted to lose out on the titular role in 2005's 'Batman Begins', which went to Christian Bale, and Christian (Ewan McGregor) in the latter's 2001 jukebox musical 'Moulin Rouge!', which the late Heath Ledger was also considered for.Despite his disappointment, he praised both filmmakers for explaining the reasoning behind their decision to pick another actor. He told 'The Howard Stern Show': “What I felt was disappointment when I didn’t get it. Both Heath and I were disappointed.“But that’s Ewan McGregor’s part. You learn to go, ‘There’s another one. I can try and go in and audition for another one. Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t letting missing out on playing the Caped Crusader drag him down.
The actor reflected on not being cast in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” during a recent appearance on “The Howard Stern Show” in the below video. While Gyllenhaal admitted to feeling some “disappointment” when he lost out on Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” before Ewan McGregor was cast, it taught him a lesson that he had to apply when he was denied the part of Bruce Wayne years later.
“You learn to go, ‘There’s another one. I can try and go in and audition for another one. I’ll get something else.’ You keep that attitude,” Gyllenhaal said.
Both “Moulin Rouge!” director Luhrmann and “Batman Begins” helmer Nolan personally reached out to Gyllenhaal to explain why he didn’t land the respective lead parts.

As far as the next James Bond is concerned, it seems the name’s Taylor-Johnson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Or at least that’s what British tabloid The Sun would have us believe.
The newspaper has sparked viral speculation that the Kick-Ass star is just moments away from signing a deal to play one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
In a report featured on its front page, The Sun said Taylor-Johnson has been “formally offered the job” and “is going to sign his contract in the coming days.”
James Bond producer Eon Productions declined to comment on the report, but that is not unusual for the company helmed by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
As a source at Eon sagely pointed out to Deadline, if it spent its days reacting to reports about who is replacing Daniel Craig as 007, it would have time for little else.

The project will see Grammy nominee Lovato take on her first dramatic role in a feature and marks BAFTA-nominee Sessa’s next project — my colleague Baz had the initial scoop on that casting last month — after his acclaimed screen debut in five-time Oscar nominee The Holdovers.
As we revealed ahead of the European Film Market, Tow will see Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Byrne portray the true story of Amanda Ogle, an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634. Catherine Martin, the four-time Oscar-winning producer, costume designer and production designer of “Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis,” says she is waiting to see what project Baz Luhrmann, her husband and longtime creative partner, will embark on next.
Martin is at the Red Sea Film Festival with Luhrmann, whom she started working with on his debut feature, 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom.” Since then, there have been a series of projects marked by their striking visual style, netting Martin a number of nominations and awards.
She spoke to Variety.
Following last year’s “Elvis,” what do you think will be your next project?
Baz hasn’t made any decisions. And I assiduously try not to get attached to any project when he’s in the process of deciding what he’s going to do. Because invariably, the one that I become attached to is not the one we end up doing.

Jeymes Samuel was intent on putting a “hood” vibe into his Biblical epic The Book of Clarence starring Lakeith Stanfield as the eponymous Clarence, a local lad in the Holy Land who gets by dealing weed and holding chariot races against a no-nonsense Mary Magdalene. Clarence soon sees an opening to make some bucks in the Messiah business but then he realizes that miracles can happen when you least expect them. The Book of Clarence, which also features Rj Cyler, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Omar Sy, David Oyelowo, Teyana Taylor, Anna Diop and Michael Ward, follows the director’s debut feature, The Harder They Fall, which spiced up the Western genre.

Baz Luhrmann is not the type of filmmaker to repeat himself.
From “Romeo + Juliet” to “Moulin Rouge!” to “Elvis,” his films are each uniquely specific, traversing fresh genre territory in the way that only Baz Luhrmann can. Which is why it’s no surprise that “Faraway Downs,” a newly edited version of Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia” that includes nearly an hour of new footage, is anything but a retread.

Elvis Presley‘s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” was originally in an emotional scene in Sofia Coppola’s film Priscilla. Coppola discussed her intended use of the track in the film. She also explained what she was trying to accomplish with the movie as a whole and how it compared to the recent Hollywood film Elvis.
Sofia Coppola put an instrumental ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ in the movie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coppola asked Elvis Presley Enterprises if she could use recordings of Elvis in her movie. They turned her down. She said this was because Elvis Presley Enterprises protects their brand and doesn’t like projects they didn’t originate. There’s still nods to Elvis’ music in the finished film, such as a cover of “Guitar Man” and instrumental versions of “Aura Lee” ( the folk song that inspired the melody of “Love Me Tender”). Hollywood is being very fair to Elvis Presley even if it’s by accident. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Sofia Coppolas’ Priscilla are polar opposites. One is for fans and one certainly isn’t. Nobody has to like one or both of these films, but it’s probably for the best that they both exist and here’s why.
The movie ‘Elvis’ is about an icon and ‘Priscilla’ is about a person
Luhrmann’s Elvis was a masterpiece to some and a bland piece of pop filmmaking to others. Regardless, it was definitely an exploration of Elvis the icon. It showed up his rise and fall (and subsequent rise and fall), his amazing energy onstage, and his glittery jumpsuits. It’s also sold him as a musician more than most music biopics do. The soundtrack was a nonstop audio assault of every Elvis song and every style, regardless of chronological order.

The third edition of the festival will take place Nov. 30-Dec. 9 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on the Eastern shore of the Red Sea.
In the fest’s Red Sea: Features competition, 17 features will be selected to “showcase the most compelling, unique and impressive work from the past year, with the winners being selected by Luhrmann and the highly esteemed jury to receive the coveted Yusr Awards,” organizers said. In 2022, the Golden Yusr was awarded to Hanging Gardens, directed by Ahmed Yassin Al Daradji.
“As a child in the local cinema that we ran near the tiny country town where I grew up, I was mesmerized by the powerful historical and physical landscapes of Lawrence of Arabia,” said Luhrmann.

The long-awaited cinematic adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's" is due out on October 27, 2023, and fan speculation is well underway. Is Matthew Lillard's Steve Raglan actually franchise baddie, William Afton? Is Elizabeth Lail's Vanessa going to be revealed as the villainous Vanny? And what's the deal with Mary Stuart Masterson's Aunt Jane? As heads swirl with questions and theories, fans can at least take solace in knowing ahead of time that "FNaF" will proudly feature cameos from some of the most popular gamers responsible for helping introduce Scott Cawthon's creepy survival game featuring possessed animatronics to the masses.
As has been confirmed by the trailer and from public acknowledgments, YouTubers 8-Bit Ryan, Baz, Razzbowski, FusionZGamer, and Dawko are all shown on Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria's "Employee of the Month" board. However, the biggest cameo appearance comes from CoryxKenshin, who plays the role of a cab driver.

Updated, 4:49 Pm: In the wake of notching a shiny 82% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score with critics coming out of its Telluride Film Festival premiere, Saltburn from Oscar winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell is going a week earlier on Nov. 17, limited. MGM will then expand the film on Nov. 22 to take advantage of holiday moviegoers.
The wild ride film is a deconstruction of British upper-class society in which Barry Keoghan plays a young nerdy Oxford university student who befriends a much popular, and wealthier colleague, played by Jacob Elordi. Keoghan’s character is obsessed by him, and eventually spends a summer with the friend’s eccentric family at their countryside estate.
Read Baz’s conversation with Fennell at Telluride, where she called the film “personal” and that it’s “about needing and wanting and desire and sex.”

Elvis Presley‘s daughter, Lisa Marie, threw her wholehearted support behind the 2022 feature film Elvis. She publicly applauded director Baz Luhrmann and star, Austin Butler for how her father was portrayed. Lisa Marie was so supportive of the movie she allowed its stars privileged access to Graceland, her father’s home. The cast was allowed to party in one of Graceland’s most sacred spaces to celebrate its premiere. Here are the details.
Lisa Marie Presley made Graceland accessible to ‘Elvis’ cast
Elvis producer Gail Berman shared her experiences working with Lisa Marie Presley so that the feature film would have a level of accuracy demanded by the King of Rock and Roll’s fans. Berman told The Hollywood Reporter, “[Lisa Marie] decided, completely independent of us, that she wanted to be supportive of it, Austin and Baz, and she opened up her home at Graceland to us.”

Practically alone among mainstream filmmakers of today, Baz Luhrmann is almost a mythic figure, an Aussie gentleman of elaborate tastes and legendary creative control of every aspect of his movies, from writing to direction, design to costuming, music to editing. He has directed just six feature films over 30 years, but each has achieved its own fabled history. That would include his 2022 film “Elvis,” not so much a biopic as a movie “inspired by real events” and starring Austin Butler.
But who is this man? A brief background bio: he has born Mark Anthony Luhrmann on September 17, 1962 in Sydney, Australia, the son of a mother who was a ballroom dance teacher and dress shop owner, and as father who ran a petrol station and movie theater. Legend has it that he earned the “Baz” handle because his hair style resembled that of puppet character named Basil Brush. At 20, he founded his own theatre company.

London, July 29 (Ians) Veteran England fast-bowler James Anderson said he still has a lot more to contribute to the Test team amidst the talks of his retirement from the game. Anderson is England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 690 wickets and will be turning 41 during the ongoing fifth Ashes Test on Sunday.

The Indiana Jones franchise has, time and again, introduced some of the best-supporting characters, without whom Indy’s adventures would have remained forever incomplete. In his on-screen journey encompassing four decades, Indy has found a trustworthy, charming friend in Sallah; a quippy, brave sidekick in Short Round; and a witty, clueless colleague in the curator Marcus Brody, all of whom became much endeared to the audience through the years. Indy was yet to find a worthy successor who could keep his legacy intact, and even though his son Mutt could have fit the role, poor audience reception of the character portrayed by Shia Labeouf in Kingdom of The Crystal Skull resulted in the character’s off-screen death.
Finally, in the last chapter of Indy’s journey, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, the character Helena ‘Wombat’ Shaw makes an appearance, whose actions, motivations, and growth as a character have...

The iconic treasure hunter Indiana Jones, whose exploits have been synonymous with the word ‘adventure’ in mainstream pop culture, was the brainchild of the visionary trio of George Lucas, Philip Kaufman, and Steven Spielberg. The character was conceptualized with fictional pulp action heroes like Doc Savage in mind, along with rowdy characters from the 40s and 50s features starring Alan Ladd and Gregory Peck. The character was famously imbued with Spielberg’s personal touches, as the director tried to make him fallible, relatable, and grounded even though the adventures he embarked on were epic in proportion. Actor Harrison Ford, who had portrayed the character in all five movies, was so attached to the character that he famously stated that the character would be gone when he decided to retire from acting; there would be no continuation with other actors. Needless to say, handling a character of such importance in the final movie of the franchise,...

Exotic tropical locations within or outside the planet Earth, over-the-top villains, manifestations of unbelievable conspiracy theories, catacombs riddled with death traps, and a swashbuckling wanderer in the lead were the key tropes in most 30’s and 40’s pulp fiction and comics representation of them. These acted as source material when influenced by them; visionary filmmakers like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Philip Kaufman brought the character Indiana Jones to life with the movie Raiders of The Lost Ark (1981), and the rest is, in the literal sense, history.
The sprawling set pieces, high-octane chase scenes, and a grand sense of wonder weaved by John William’s music added a certain novelty to the movie, which has marked subsequent releases too. With four entries strong, the Indiana Jones movie franchise has inspired numerous other ventures of world cinema in the last five decades. With the fifth and final entry of the franchise,...

Priscilla Presley is praising Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.”
Adapted from Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me,” the A24 film stars Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
“I am excited about the interpretation of my book by the masterful Sofia Coppola,” Presley shared on Instagram. “She has such an extraordinary perspective and I have always been such an admirer of her work. I’m certain this movie will take everyone on an emotional journey.”
The film centers on a teenage Priscilla Beaulieu, who meets Elvis Presley at a party, and the rock ‘n roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend.
Presley’s comments come on the heels of the teaser trailer being released, as well as reports that the Elvis Presley estate was unaware of “Priscilla” being produced. An estate official told TMZ that...

This fall, moviegoers will have a chance to see the work of Sofia Coppola in theaters for the first time since 2017 thanks to “Priscilla.” The A24 film, Coppola’s first feature since 2020’s Apple Original Film “On the Rocks,” is about the courtship and romance between Priscilla Beaulieu and Elvis Presley. Coppola based the film on the book “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon.
Here’s the plot summary: “When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a gentle best friend. Jacob Elordi is just a hunk of burning love as Elvis Presley.
The “Euphoria” breakout star transforms into the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me.” Simply titled “Priscilla,” the A24 film stars Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third film with A24 since “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” The writer-director reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece.
Coppola recently compared “Priscilla” to her 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” calling Priscilla herself a “quintessential glamor icon” of Americana style.

Actor Ethan Hawke was once a bit concerned about the direction of the film industry. But he was skeptical about the world of television as well, which he wasn’t completely sure was a viable alternative.
Why Ethan Hawke once called television a false God Ethan Hawke | Rocco Spaziani/Getty Images
Hawke has usually been an actor seeking meaningful films to work on, with the paycheck not being his highest priority. He’s starred in almost every film genre that cinema has to offer, from action to sci-fi. This was intentional on Hawke’s part, who wanted his career to be broad and diverse.
“I love movies, and my hope is by the end to have created a little something good for everybody,” Hawke once told Fade In. “You like cop pictures? I got one! You like horror? Got it! Art films? Check. Shakespeare? Check. Western? Comedy? Coming right up!

New Delhi, April 12 (Ians) England Test skipper Ben Stokes wants to add a fresh threat to the aggressive game-plan when Australia tour for the Ashes this summer as he has demanded “fast, flat wickets”.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Stokes said that he has asked the five Test venues to produce fast, flat wickets that will suit England’s batters to score as quickly as possible and to put the opposition under pressure.
“We’ve been very clear, especially with the ground staff around England, about what type of wickets we want. And they’ve been very responsive to us which has been good,” Stokes said.
“We want fast, flat wickets. We want to go out there and score quickly. It brings their (Australia’s) guys in: if they’ve got fast wickets to bowl on then they’ll be happy with that as well,” he added.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is an overwhelming sensory experience in which all the tools of cinema are utilized to convey not only what it was like to watch and hear Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) in his prime but what it was like to be Elvis — and what it was like to be Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), the man who both elevated and exploited The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The movie meticulously recreates the surface details of Presley’s life and times but goes further to convey the emotional state of American culture at large in the decades during which Elvis was at its center — and how that emotional state transformed across the decades.

Hollywood history is filled with controversial literary adaptations, but Baz Luhrmann’s take on “The Great Gatsby” ranks up there with the best of them. His take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work polarized audiences, with some viewing it as blasphemous and others seeing it as a timely update of a classic novel. In a new interview with Now to Love, Isla Fisher, who played Myrtle in the film, reflected on the experience of working with Luhrmann. “Baz is the greatest,” Fisher said. “He is just magical. You can’t compare Baz to anyone. He is dressed to the nines at all times, regardless of the weather, carrying a porcelain teacup filled with tea. His grasp of language and story and his visual sensibility — the way he approaches material, the way he uses music, the way he engages you — is so seductive. He is just pure creative talent.” The film...

Director Baz Luhrmann first made his mark on the film world with the delightful 1992 musical “Strictly Ballroom,” but 1996 was when audiences got a taste for the full array of his boundless cinematic enthusiasms. Unleashed by the resources and scale afforded by a Hollywood studio, “Romeo + Juliet” would set the template for the director’s maximalist aesthetic, bringing together Shakespeare, music videos, Hong Kong action flicks, and Westerns. In the same way he later brought 1800s French can-can into the MTV era with “Moulin Rouge,” these seemingly disparate ingredients coalesced in Luhrmann’s head — where the lines between high and low culture, classic and contemporary art, history and fantasy, do not exist.
The key to Luhrmann’s sustained success across three decades — in which he is one of the last auteurs whose recognizable brand of cinema remains bankable — is a partner, both in life and work, who can extract a...

Sucker Punch
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Cast: Emily Browning, Oscar Isaac, Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn
Plot: A young woman (Browning) seeks to escape the insane asylum she’s locked up in by exploring violent fantasies, featuring her friends (Hudgens, Chung, Cornish, Malone).
He Said (Aaron Ruffcorn) vs. He Said (Nick Allen)
This new edition of “He Said – He Said” introduces Tsr writer Aaron Ruffcorn to our special little gamut. The topic for this round, as you’ve noticed, is Sucker Punch. Aaron thought very highly of the movie, and his opponent, Nick Allen, did not. Thus, in honor of that scene in the film where the schoolgirl with the sword fights against that massive samurai robot thing, it’s time for another valiant episode of “He Said – He Said.” As always, plot spoilers are fair game, so you’re advised to see the film before reading on.

Books: They’re just like movies, only without CGI.
So it’s no wonder that over the past century, Hollywood has consistently turned to books to provide the basis for some of its best works. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for instance, was based on a book, while “Gigli” wasn’t. See how that works?
With that in mind, then, we decided to put together a sneak peak of all the coolest books currently being turned into major motion pictures (like “The Help,” left). Because these days, the best library you can go to is your local Cineplex.
‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’
Attached: Georgie Henley, Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Liam Neeson
Status: The third book from the classic C. S. Lewis series to make it to the big screen, “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” has flown a bit under the radar thanks to the media...
