The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.

Hard hitting social issue documentaries are getting more difficult to make and sell with each passing year. But despite the market’s fondness for true crime and celebrity-driven nonfiction content, the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program (Dfp) isn’t wavering when it comes to its support of docu filmmakers telling stories dealing with social impact topics including human rights, racial justice, gender equity, democracy, LGBTQ rights, environmental sustainability, freedom of expression, and civic empowerment.

Vladimir Putin may prefer that people forget about imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but the Cinema Eye Honors isn’t.
The awards show dedicated to the art and craft of documentary film today announced its 2023 Unforgettables list of the most memorable subjects of nonfiction films this year, and Navalny’s name was front and center. The story of the lawyer and anti-corruption crusader, who was almost killed in a Kremlin poisoning plot in 2020, is told in the award-winning film Navalny, directed by Daniel Roher.
Joining Navalny on the Unforgettables list is another political leader — Gabby Giffords, the former Congresswoman from Arizona who was severely injured in an assassination attempt in 2011. Her difficult road to recovery and return to activism is told in Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen.

The tragic death — and subsequent sweeping justice movement — of U.S. Army soldier Vanessa Guillen is the center of a new documentary coming to Netflix later this fall.
“I Am Vanessa Guillen,” from director Christy Wegener, will tell Guillen’s tragic but galvanizing tale, about a young woman who dreamed of a military career. In 2020, however, after telling her mother she was being sexually harassed on the Fort Hood army base, Guillen was murdered by a fellow soldier. Her story sparked an international movement of assault victims demanding action. The project follows her family’s fight for historic reform, a journey that takes them to the Oval Office.
“At the core, this is a story about overcoming the greatest odds imaginable in the name of family, love and justice. This is David vs. Goliath on steroids,” Wegener said. “Taking on the U.S. military, one of the largest, most powerful institutions...

For her first feature-length film, documentarian Isabel Castro set out to capture a widely experienced, yet still broadly overlooked immigrant perspective. And there’s a line late in “Mija” that sums up her sensitive approach so succinctly that it could be pulled out and used as a logline: “We inherit our families’ dreams, but also their fears.”
The observation is sighed as much as it’s said, by aspiring musician Jacks Haupt. Haupt is one of Castro’s two young protagonists, but her story is depicted as a connective bridge to many others.
Both of Castro’s subjects are first-generation Mexican-Americans who carry the full weight of their undocumented parents’ lives. This includes not only their dreams and fears but also their more immediate choices and challenges.

The immigrant story is often told from the perspective of the transplant but not from their American-born offspring. Emmy-nominated director Isabel Castro brings the story of two first-generation daughters of undocumented families in Mija, an award-winning feature documentary coming to movie theaters on August 5 in NYC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and later this year to Disney+. Doris Anahí is sitting in a cafe in Mexico City, talking to Rolling Stone on the phone, when a tiny hummingbird lands directly in front of her and flutters its wings. “It’s my ancestors saying, ‘What’s up!’” she says with a laugh. She’s been in Mexico for a few weeks; she arrived first in Guadalajara and has been spending time working on music and connecting with family. Little moments like this happen constantly: She’ll see an animal or some kind of symbol in nature, and she...

"The blood, sweat, and tears that go into this, mean something to someone." Disney has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Mija, made by filmmaker Isabel Castro. This initially premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, arriving in select US theaters this August. Mija chronicles the emotional and complex stories of Doris Muñoz & Jacks Haupt, daughters of undocumented immigrants from Mexico, navigating their careers in the music industry. For these two, "making it" isn't just a dream, it's a necessity for their survival and for their family. Director Isabel Castro's intimate debut feature constructs an ethereal vision and homage to the daughters that fight for their families, their dreams and themselves. It won Best Film at Dock of the Bay Festival 2022. Mija has had a strong presence on the film festival circuit, including True/False Film Festival, Miami Film Festival, Cph: Dox, Sffilm ...

One of the more affecting films I saw at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year was Isabel Castro’s debut documentary Mija, which takes a poignant and personal look at two daughters of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who are attempting to break through in the music industry. Picked up by Disney Original Documentary for a release next month, the first trailer has now arrived.
Mija features Doris Muñoz and Jacks Haupt, two daughters of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who are both navigating their careers in the music industry. Seeking to provide for their families while achieving their dreams, Doris and Jacks bond over the ever-present guilt of being the first American-born members of their undocumented families and the financial risks of pursuing their dreams. For them, the pressure of success is heightened due to their families’ hope for green cards and reunification.
See the trailer below.

2016 has seen more than its fair share of celebrity deaths, with every aspect of culture impacted: music (Prince, David Bowie), sports (Muhammad Ali), politics (John Glenn) and too many others to count. That includes movies, of course, and Turner Classic Movies has released its annual “TCM Remembers” video to commemorate the silver-screen stars who’ve left us this year. One sincerely hopes that no one else joins their ranks over the next two weeks.
