There is almost zero subtlety in Lakadbaggha. The title is literal, as it is indeed about a hyena saving the day. For the uninitiated, Lakadbaggha is the Hindi word for the animal. The one we see in the movie looks quite artificial, though, thanks to shoddy VFX. In fact, the effect of budget constraints is visible throughout the movie. It doesn’t exactly look that polished; in fact, a lot of frames appear to be downright amateurish. I am not on a mission to massacre Victor Mukherjee’s movie with harsh words. In fact, it is just the opposite. I am getting the criticism out of the way first, because I have all the praise in the world for Lakadbaggha, which, despite all the issues, was an incredibly satisfactory watch for me.

Feluda first appeared in the Ray family’s Bengali-language magazine Sandesh in 1965. Ray directed two Feluda films, “The Golden Fortress” (1974) and “The Elephant God” (1978), where the Bengali detective was played by his frequent collaborator Soumitra Chatterjee. Feluda has subsequently been played by a range of Indian actors, including Shashi Kapoor, Abir Chatterjee, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Indraneil Sengupta and Bangladesh’s Ahmed Rubel.
The detective is part of the fabric of growing up in West Bengal and Bangladesh, akin to what Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple used to be for several generations in the west.
Chattopadhyay first interpreted the detective in 2017 for series “Feluda” for Bangladesh’s Bioscopelive which he directed and also played Feluda. “It was a very radical interpretation...

Despite watchable stars and a gorgeously rendered 1940s-Calcutta setting, a convoluted plot makes this detective yarn feel longer than a prison sentence
Has there ever been an exclamation mark as misleading as the one in the title of this film? Exclamation marks mean urgency, excitement, exuberance – think Mars Attacks!; Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!; Hello, Dolly! If you see an exclamation mark, the understanding is that this way adventure lies. But adventure fails to permeate the listlessness of this overlong, self-indulgent would-be thriller.
Directed by the much-lauded National film award-winner Dibakar Banerjee, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is an origins story for Bengali author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s hugely popular gumshoe. Let’s begin with the good news. It’s set in a spectacular 1940s Calcutta meticulously recreated by Banerjee – a pulsating hub of gangsters and political activists that is a world away from the customarily stately and strangulated Raj-era period drama. The cast is strong,...

The highlight of any Sherlock Holmes story is never the story itself. When you look deep enough, there is always a dot point path that will lead to the solution for any puzzle. The allure of the clues and the unconventional mix of various fields from science to mythology. These form the highlight. All that forms the brilliance that is Sherlock Holmes and the madness as well, is but the stepping stones for Detective Byomkesh Bakshi as written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Even as Holmes overwhelmed the world, this Bengali Babu still had his own quirks and traits which made the stories and subsequent TV show so successful.

Sushant Singh Rajput has joined the ranks of many before him who have essayed Byomkesh Bakshy on-screen, but the actor says his upcoming film is director Dibakar Banerjee’s personal and unique take on the famous fictional detective from Bengali literature.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is based on the tales penned by writer Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. The 29-year-old actor says, even though he may be the 75th Byomkesh in screen history, he never had any doubts about the project because it presents a fresh take on the sleuth. “There are so many TV shows and films about Byomkesh. I am probably the 75th Byomkesh. So, we have the essence of the story in our film but it is a very personal take of Dibakar. Even though it is something that has been done so many times and in different ways, I never had an iota of doubt with Dibakar and Yash Raj on board,...

Though Dibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is based on the old fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshy series created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, the filmmaker has presented his film in a very contemporary manner.
Meiyang Chang, who plays a drug dealer in the film and whose role has been specially designed for Detective Byomkesh Bakshy as we reported last time, says, "Dibakar did not make the film and music as per 1943 setup, though it's based in that era. He wanted to make Detective Byomkesh Bakshy in a contemporary style. Despite being set in the backdrop of Kolkata, he didn't the change the lingo. You will meet a modern day Detective Byomkesh Bakshy."
Though Meiyang has a small part to play in the film, he says you can't afford to miss an opportunity to work in a Dibakar film.
"Dibakar Banerjee ki koi bhi film mai role chota ya bada nahi hota. He writes that well.

We loved the 1940’s groove of Calcutta Kiss from Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! when it first hit and now we can say we love it even more now that we have seen the video! It features the super talented Lauren Gottlieb who jives and jitterbugs to the beat in this footloose-with-a-flair number.
Composed by Madboy/Mink (Imaad Shah & Saba Azad) a cool clarinet completely sets the music apart and when you add in the acoustic guitar, synthesizer and drum machine set to interesting Raj era laden lyrics you have a song which makes you want to move.
With glimpses of the film, this video is awash with a delightful and innovative black and white blend with a dash of colour that will make you re-imagine a 1940s period club with a contemporary vibe!

Playing the title role in Dibakar Banerjee’s period sleuth film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! was challenging for Sushant Singh Rajput and he says he has worked very hard to get his act right in the movie.
The 29-year-old actor said that before doing the film he did his fair share of research on Bengali literature’s most loved fictional detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. “I knew that I had the resources and researches. The bottom line was the authority to play the character Byomkesh. I was aware of what not to do on-screen. Filmmaking is all about what we like to do on-screen. We have attempted that in the film. I have worked very hard to perform the character,” said Rajput. The film is set in Kolkata and has been extensively shot in the city as well as Mumbai.

Dibakar Banerjee’s next, the highly awaited Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is making all the right noises in the industry. The YouTube trailer of the film has already crossed well over a 1 million views. The film is adapted from Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s crime thriller novels, which have the Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshy as the protagonist. Though the director has bought the rights for all the 33 novels featuring the Bengali sleuth, he is reluctant to say that his film is first of a series.
At a recent event in New Delhi Dibakar confessed that he was very nervous about his film. “I have been fascinated by the stories and by Byomkesh’s character since I read it for the first time. And when I read it I read all the 33 novels all together it took me maybe two to three years but I remember how deep an impression it had on me.

Bollywood industry is always looking for new ideas to turn into box office hits, and it is now the turn of the detective genre. It is not for nothing that filmmakers are working on multiple projects that are scheduled to reach cinemas next year.
The most expected film is probably Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos. After the success of Barfi last year, the director and Ranbir Kapoor team up again, this time also as producers under a new banner called Picture Shuru Productions. The film has been described by its makers on the lines of “Sherlock Holmes meet Austin Powers”, a typical Bollywood mixture of action, comedy and music that will surely delight the audience. Although he recently turned 31, Kapoor will play the role of a teenager, together with Katrina Kaif as his girlfriend and Govinda as his step-father. Filming is scheduled to start this month.

Rituparno Ghosh’s last completed film Jeevan Smriti: Selected Memories (77 mins), an impressionist documentary on Rabindranath Tagore will be telecast on August 8, 10:30 pm on Doordarshan.
The film in English celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore while the telecast coincides with 22nd Shravan, his death anniversary.
Jeevan Smriti is produced by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and filmmaker Sanjoy Nag is the creative producer.
“The film focuses on some key journeys in Tagore’s life that evolved and enriched his quest to re-imagine a new India, which would rise above narrow patriotic concerns prevailing in the country of the time,” Rituparno had said. “The idea is not to stick to the expected austerity of the standard documentary film, but to bring Tagore alive as a flesh and blood person whom the average Indian can relate to despite his lofty philosophical expression, as a lovable and highly accessible vulnerable human being.

If you miss the fictional Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi, here is a piece of good news for you. Dibakar Banerjee's next titled Kolkata is a detective thriller and will have a detective a la Byomkesh Bakshi in the central role.
A well placed source reveals, "Dibakar is a huge fan of detective thrillers and investigative stories. 'Sherlock Holmes' and the Bengali detective 'Byomkesh Bakshi' are among his favourite detective shows. He was toying with the idea of making a film on such a subject for a long time and he is finally doing it."
Divulging on the plot of the film, the source informs, "It's a murder mystery based in Kolkata but has no resemblance to Kahaani. It is going to be a hardcore detective thriller. Since Dibakar's lead character is also a Bengali detective guy and his film is set in Kolkata, the comparisons with Byomkesh Bakshi are bound to happen.
