He taught for more than a decade at Mills College in California, where he directed the Center for Contemporary Music.
He earned a bachelor's degree in music theory from the University of Michigan, followed by a master's from the Manhattan School of Music. Back at Michigan, he studied music, speech, and psychoacoustics.
His operas had relatively little staging. Some of his compositions did not have fully notated scores, requiring the performers to improvise large sections.
