Representing Latin American, U.S. Latino, and non-Latino artists who explore multicultural relationships from singular perspectives, the films at this year's Sundance Film Festival include an array of stories that showcase the diverse creative voices that exist within the Latino filmmaking community.
This list includes both films that have been created fully or partially by Latin American or U.S. Latino filmmakers, as well as those that deal with themes and ideas relevant to the Latino experience in or outside the Unites States, even if these were not created by Latino artists. The increasing interest in these stories testifies to how rapidly Latinos are becoming constant and strong voices in all areas of the film industry.
In order to highlight as many of these talented creators and films as possible, we’ve created a list that includes all the films at the festival that are helmed by or that incorporate Latino talent and those that focus on a specific aspect pertinent to the Latino community. Some are obvious standouts like Argentina's acclaimed dark comedy "Wild Tales" or Colombia's "Liveforever" from Carlos Moreno.
Then there are those who at first sight might not fit the parameters of what one could think is a Latino film. This is the case of films like Eli Roth's "Knock Knock," which is an English-language horror film whose co-writers, producers, and part of the cast are originally from Chile. There is also " Aloft," a drama in the Spotlight section, which is set between Canada and Minnesota and stars Jennifer Connelly. It was written and directed by Academy Award nominated Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa.
The third case includes those films that deal with subjects that have Latino elements or that explore diversity in the U.S in some way. Examples of these are "The Strongest Man" from Kenny Riches, a film narrated in Spanish by its protagonist "Beef," a charming, yet lost Cuban-American man in Miami; or "Cartel Land" by Matthew Heineman, which focuses on the violence shared between Mexico and U.S due to the drug-fueled chaos that afflicts the region. On a lighter note, there are films like “City of Gold” by Laura Gabbert, in which Los Angeles is seen through its ethnic food and local idiosyncrasies.
In an effort to give exposure to those films in the program that don’t get as much attention, the list below starts with the Shorts Programs and ends with the Dramatic Premieres. Each title is linked to its page on the Sundance website where screening times and locations can be found. Regardless of what films you watch at the festival, it is likely that your eyes will be expose to the work of some amazingly talented Latino filmmaker, writer or actor, or those who appreciate our stories as much as we do.

He dreams of attending Harvard, but first he has to make it home every day. When a drug dealer takes a shine to Malcolm and invites him to his birthday party, Malcolm’s crew is swirled into a hilarious blender of offbeat characters and bad choices where redemption can only be found in Bitcoin.

"Experimenter"
Latino Talent: Dir. Michael Almereyda and Actor John Leguizamo
"Last Days in the Desert"
Latino Talent: Dir. Rodrigo García and Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki

Lila and Eve form a friendship, and Lila begins to crawl out of her depression. She develops a burning desire to find justice for her son, and she presses the authorities for answers, but they are slow-moving and ineffective. It’s Eve who has the idea first—join together, find the drug dealers who shot Stephon dead, and bring them to justice themselves.

The Green Inferno horror starring Kirby Bliss Blanton, Daryl Sabara, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz and Sky Ferreria has new photos. Open Road Films picked this up for distribution at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story follows a group of student activists from New York City who travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved. Eli Roth directs and also wrote the screenplay alongside Guillermo Amoedo. Miguel Asensio, Molly Conners, Nicolás López, Christopher Woodrow and Roth produce.

Open Road Films is acquiring The Green Inferno, the horror thriller written and directed by Eli Roth that premiered over the weekend in Toronto in the Midnight Madness section. I’m hearing there is no minimum guarantee with a gross corridor but that the pic will get a wide release. Roth’s movies always make money with their low budgets, so Roth and his financiers are betting on the upside. CAA repped the deal. Green Inferno centers on student activists from New York who travel to the remote jungles of Peru in order to stage a protest but find they are on the menu when they encounter a tribe of cannibals. Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy and Sky Ferreira star in the film, produced and financed by Worldview Entertainment’s Molly Conners and Chris Woodrow. Simon Halls, Miguel Asensio and Nicolas Lopez also are producers. It marks Roth’s first feature...

Following on from a very good response at the world premiere on Saturday night to his cannibal horror film "The Green Inferno," filmmaker Eli Roth says he's already at work on a sequel.
The first film follows a group of student activists who travel from New York City to the Amazon to save a dying tribe. They soon crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they protected.
Roth will not return to direct "Beyond The Green Inferno," but will 'present' the film and produce. Instead, Nicolas Lopez will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Roth and Guillermo Amoedo.
Lopez says: "Our plan with Beyond The Green Inferno is to make a sequel in the tradition of Aliens, where the creative team went bigger, darker and scarier into the unknown."
Lopez, Miguel Asensio Llamas, Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners will produce. Filming will commence next spring in Chile and Peru.

With Aftershock making noise in theatres this weekend, we have scored a nine-minute behind-the-scenes look at Nicolas Lopez's brutal disaster/horror hybrid. Check it out, and read our Aftershock reviews here.
Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez, and Guillermo Amoedo, revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.
It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Roth most recently produced The Last Exorcism, a microbudget film that grossed $70 million worldwide.
Roth and Lopez wrote the story together, inspired by the latter’s experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds, Roth plays the lead. Among...

When he hasn’t been writing directing or producing some of the more notorious entries in the horror/torture porn catalogue (like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel,” and the two “Last Exorcisms”) Eli Roth has worked on his parallel career as screen star -- perhaps most notably as the Bear Jew, the baseball bat-wielding, Nazi-dispatching, one-man-Jewish-revenge-fantasy of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” So imagine our surprise to find Roth playing the shirt-tucked-into-mom-jeans-wearing Jewish stereotype of “Aftershock,” which opens Friday (May 10). Produced by Roth, Brian Oliver (“Arthur Newman”) and Miguel Asensio, and directed by Chile’s Nicolas Lopez, the shocker is set in Santiago, where three guys on the make run into what are essentially three supermodels (Lorenza Izzo, Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart), and then there’s an earthquake. But it’s a bit odd, this very deliberate effort to emphasize the male characters' Jewishness -- something Roth’s...

The film is written by Britan Oliver, Miguel Asensio and Roth, and opens in theaters on May 10th. We reviewed this at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and gave it an above average 3/5 score.

Eli Roth is without a doubt the king of horror for his generation, and so naturally I’m really looking forward to seeing him finally return behind the camera for his fourth feature, The Green Inferno.
After starring alongside them in Aftershock – the brilliant horror movie is due out later this year, and you can read our review here – Roth has once more joined forces with the fantastic Lorenza Izzo and Ariel Levy, casting them here in The Green Inferno.
And now a very bloody first image from the film has been released. And Roth himself has released the official synopsis through his blog, telling us to ignore any others floating around online.
“A group of student activists from New York City travel to the Amazon to protect a dying tribe, but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they saved.”

Aftershock, Eli Roth’s latest venture into the horror genre, reminds us all once more why Roth is the current king of horror.
We saw a bloody set of images back in the summer, just before its debut at Tiff – you can read our review here. And since then, things have been fairly quiet.
But no more. The first trailer has been released over at IGN, giving a great first look at Nicolás López’s upcoming horror.

Eli Roth is set to direct his first full length feature film since Hostel II, The Green Inferno, which is based on the 1980 Italian movie Cannibal Holocaust. The story follows an "idealistic student and a group of naive do-gooders who are captured by cannibalistic Indios after their plane crash lands in the Peruvian jungle."
The full cast for the film has been announced, and Roth is ready to put them to work in some crazy conditions! He will be shooting the film near a remote native village located on the Amazon river in Peru. This place has no electricity or running water. The director took a small film crew to the village to get permission to shoot there from the locals, and while they were there they showed the residents there their first movie. The movie he ended up showing them was Cannibal Holocaust, and guess what? The natives thought it was hilarious!

Some of the adventure in the field of movie making means bringing things to the screen that no one has ever seen before. Sort of like what the character of Carl Denham had in mind with King Kong. That being said, consider Eli Roth another adventurer!
Roth recently told Movieline that he’s taking a small crew to a remote village up the Amazon River that has “no electricity, no running water, nothing.” For the privilege of filming in this unseen territory, “We’re giving these people a boat," says Roth. "They have no contact with the outside world and we’re giving them a motorboat and we’re giving them medical supplies and school supplies so they’re ecstatic. The one thing they need is a boat. They were like, ‘This will literally change our lives’.”
Given that these folks had never seen a movie before, Roth arranged a screening for them of.
