Cryogenically frozen prisoners wake up thousands of years in the future in the new graphic novel Eden. Written by Matthew Arnold and illustrated by Riccardo Burchielli, Eden premieres the first of its five chapters today on comiXology Originals before being released in print on July 12th from Dark Horse Books, and as a special treat for Daily Dead readers, we've been provided with preview pages and an essay from Arnold about the graphic novel's true crime inspiration.
Here is Arnold's essay on the true crime inspiration behind Eden:
True Crime Inspiration
A theme of Eden involves judgement and punishment, particular the often harsh or unfair judgement by the media and the public. At the heart of the book is a crime — the kidnap and murder of Senator Croft’s son, Jacob. The handling of this event in the story takes its inspiration primarily from the notorious Jon Benet Ramsay true crime case.

Terence Davies’s elegant film benefits from a terrific performance by Nixon, who makes the reclusive 19th-century poet seem radiant with loneliness
In this film, Cynthia Nixon has the face of someone with a secret. She plays the poet Emily Dickinson, and her face is fever-bright with irony and wit, then loneliness and fear. You can see how emotions are somehow stored in that face provisionally, being refined and saved for later – for the poetry she writes during the night. It is a face that changes as she grows older and moves along the spectrum of genius, publishing little or nothing, angry about the non-consolation of “posterity”. Terence Davies’s film and Nixon’s tremendous performance reminded me of Wh Auden saying that Matthew Arnold “thrust his gift in prison till it died”. It isn’t Dickinson’s gift for poetry that gets thrust in prison but her gift for love,...

There have been a lot of takes on “The Wizard of Oz,” a lot of different points-of-view on the fantastical world originally created by the novels of L. Frank Baum in 1900. But NBC’s “Emerald City” is, to the best of my knowledge, the first one that transforms the flying monkeys of the classic 1939 musical adaptation into steampunk drones. They’re still recognizably flying monkeys, but to the residents of Oz, they’re just a random bit of technology, accepted as normal in a world that’s anything but.
There is something genuinely special about NBC’s “Emerald City,” premiering tonight — and not just because of its complicated journey to television, which included at least one total shutdown during the development phase before being reborn as a 10-episode series directed in its totality by Tarsem Singh, in a wide variety of exotic locations around the world.

L. Frank Baum’s children’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” has inspired countless film and theatrical adaptations, including Victor Fleming’s iconic 1939 film starring Judy Garland. Now, a dark, gritty TV series based on the world of Oz will finally the small screens early next year. The series “Emerald City” follows an older version of Dorothy Gale, played by Adria Arjona (“True Detective”), who’s transported by tornado with a K9 police dog into Oz, a land of competing realms, magic and bloodshed. The series co-stars Vincent D’Onofrio (“Full Metal Jacket”) as The Wizard, Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“Dracula”), Ana Ularu (“Outbound”), Joely Richardson (“Nip/Tuck”) and more. Nostalgia for the Light is playing March 23 - April 22 , 2016 in the United Kingdom. The Pearl ButtonAt 2015’s Berlin International Film Festival, The Pearl Button, the latest film by Patricio Guzmán, was awarded the Silver Bear prize for Best Script. No doubt deserving of this honor, one of the most high profile of the Chilean director’s near-five-decade career, the jury’s recognition of a documentarian for achievement in screenwriting may appear to some as strange, even misplaced. The oddity might help highlight that Guzmán has, in film, found striking new ways of revisiting and indeed rewriting historical subject matter.Chile’s Pinochet dictatorship—as contemporaneously chronicled in Guzmán’s exhaustive and episodic 1976 guerrilla film, The Battle of Chile—has remained the central subject of the director's work, though a topic approached and brought into close-up through an ever-abstracting...

RocketJump will soon make its premiere on Hulu, but that’s not the only new platform where Freddie Wong, Matthew Arnold, and Desmond Dolly’s production studio plans to expand. In addition, it has signed a deal with Youku Tudou, a video site sometimes referred to as China’s answer to YouTube.
By the terms of the deal, Youku Tudou will become the first Chinese platform to distribute RocketJump's dazzling productions and will become the studio’s official platform within China. The two partners also plan to collaborate on original content, which will be released on Youku Tudou next year.

Single director seasons has been a rising trend in television, with last season providing the two most notable examples in HBO’s True Detective and Cinemax’s The Knick, with David Fincher and David Lynch poised to do the same with Utopia and Twin Peaks respectively in subsequent seasons. To date, however, the trend has been limited to cable channels. NBC, however, is jumping into the ring as well, as reports have now emerged that the network channel has tapped director Tarsem Singh to direct all ten episodes of its upcoming series Emerald City.
Tarsem, whose latest feature Self/Less is currently in theatres, is known to most film fans for his work on the 2006 feature The Fall. He currently has five features under his belt, along with an assortment of music videos, including that of Rem’s Losing My Religion, but has yet to work in television.

After a two-year stint in development limbo and a cancellation eight months ago, NBC has retrieved its Wizard Of Oz-inspired TV series from the trash. The series, titled Emerald City after the sparkly green-tinged metropolis known as Oz, has undergone a resurrection by network brass who have decided it holds some value after all. Along with its ten-episode straight-to-series order, David Schulner (Do No Harm, The Playboy Club) is now attached to write and executive produce.
Universal Television, who is developing and producing the series, has struggled to lift the show off the ground for years in its various permutations. Matthew Arnold (Siberia) concocted the idea and scripted the pilot which received additional punch-ups by Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). While that iteration failed to launch, the current television climate could be the reason by NBC’s change of heart.

NBC has reportedly cancelled their new Emerald City TV series before a single episode was even filmed.
The network ordered 10 episodes of the new series without seeing a pilot first. The executive producers are Matthew Arnold (who wrote the pilot script) and Josh Friedman (who's been running the writers room). Apparently NBC execs and Friedman had disagreements over the direction of the project and the network's now decided not to move forward with the series.
Universal Television still believes in the series however and supposedly plans to shop it elsewhere.
When the show was announced in May, NBC described it this way: "Desperate for clues that will lead to the identity of her biological mother, a young woman breaks into a sinister underground facility somewhere in the Midwest. Unable to complete her mission and surrounded by security, our feisty...

Emerald City
NBC has opted not to move forward with "Emerald City," a ten episode modern and dark reimagining of the classic L. Frank Baum Oz tales said to be more akin to the likes of "Game of Thrones" than the 1939 MGM film.
Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedman's project would've drawn from Baum's original fourteen books and featured more battles, political maneuvers and a very different take on the infamous wizard. Though ordered straight to series, the plan has been scrapped due to a "difference in vision" between the network and show runners. [Source: Variety]
The Living and the Dead
"Life on Mars" and "Ashes to Ashes" co-creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham are re-teaming for the six-part supernatural period drama series "The Living and the Dead" for The BBC .
Set in the English countryside in 1888, the story follows a gentleman farmer who is obsessed with proving the existence of the afterlife.

Freddie Wong launched the crowdfunding campaign for the third season of Video Game High School under the banner of his, Desmond Dolly, and Matthew Arnold’s RocketJump production studio on January 23, 2014. 30 days later, it broke a record. 10,932 funders contributed an aggregate $900,907 to help make the last six episodes of Vghs a reality. That’s the highest dollar amount raised by a web series via a crowdfunding campaign on any crowdfunding platform to date. RocketJump’s final season of its original series about an elite school for gifted gamers took the Most Well Funded Crowdfunding Campaign For A Web Series, Ever title away from Bee And Puppycat. That campaign was orchestrated by Frederator Studios for an animated series conceived by Adventure Time storyboard artist Natasha Allegri and raised $872,133 from 18,209 backers back in November 2013. Wong and company certainly have a track record of success in their crowdfunding initiatives, but never quite to this scale.

Updated: NBC has given a 10-episode order to Emerald City, an Oz-themed drama from Siberia creator/showrunner Matthew Arnold. The order comes after the project recently underwent a rewrite by Josh Friedman. The two will executive produce through Universal Television where Friedman is under a deal. A writers room is slated to get up and running soon but casting may be postponed until after pilot season. Emerald City is described as a modern and dark reimagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of Game Of Thrones, drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we’ve never seen him before. A head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz. Following the success of the 1900 The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,...

Who knew that TV execs would be so keen to follow the yellow brick road this development season?
Deadline reports on Friday (Aug. 23) that NBC has purchased "Emerald City," a "Wizard of Oz"-themed drama from "Siberia" creator Matthew Arnold -- just two weeks after CBS put "Dorothy," a medical soap inspired by "Oz" (Yeah, has us stumped, too) into development.
"Emerald City," which will be written by Arnold, is described as a dark remaining of the classic tale of Oz more in the vein of "Game of Thrones," using stories from author L. Frank Baum's original 14 books.
"Dorothy" and "Emerald City" aren't the only "Oz" shows making the rounds, either, it would seem. Reportedly, a treatment from "Heroes" alums Adam Armus and Nora Kay Foster, with "Heroes" creator Tim Kring supervising, is working its way about town. Syfy also has a miniseries titled "Warriors of Oz" in development.

Exclusive: A century after the release of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz series, the books have become the toast of this TV development season. NBC just nabbed Emerald City, an Oz-themed drama from Siberia creator/showrunner Matthew Arnold. Two weeks ago, CBS put in development Dorothy, a medical soap inspired by the characters and themes from The Wizard of Oz. I hear there is another Oz drama making the rounds from Heroes alums Adam Armus and Nora Kay Foster, with Heroes creator Tim Kring supervising. And just last month, Syfy picked up for development a miniseries titled Warriors Of Oz from director Timur Bekmambetov, a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story. The titular Shadow People are the stuff of nightmares. They are the shadowy creatures that lurk above your bed, paralyzing you with fear and waiting to strangle you in your sleep. They are considered responsible for the very real phenomenon of Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome. Victims of Sunds are usually young and healthy people who die inexplicably in their sleep.
Director Matthew Arnold uses a true story to explore this phenomenon in Shadow People. Late night radio show host Charlie Crowe (Dallas Roberts) gets sucked into the creepy world of Shadow People when a string of sleep deaths become linked to him. His interest in the phenomenon begins to bring wide attention to the issue. However, Cdc investigator Sophie Lacombe (Alison Eastwood) does not want the truth about Sunds to get out, fearing a massive breakout—because this psychological syndrome only occurs when you think about (and believe in) the Shadow People.
