Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) in 1907
General in U.S. Army Air Force from February 1935 until his retirement on June 30, 1946
Under his command, Air Force grew from 22,000 servicemen and 3,900 planes to 2.5 million servicemen and 75,000 aircraft
He suffered five heart attacks during World War II
On May 7, 1949, he was commissioned by act of Congress as the first permanent 5-star general of the U.S. Air Force
Buried in Arlington National Cemetery
Inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1967.
Inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1972.
