The remarkable true story of Irish immigrant Jennie Hodgers — who posed as a man to fight for the Union Army during the American Civil War — will be adapted for screen.
Arny Granat, a veteran concert promoter turned Tony-winning musical producer, has hired Stephanie Sanditz to pen a feature film script from Lynda Durrant’s book “My Last Skirt: The Story of Jennie Hodgers, Union Soldier.” Granat — whose stage credits include “In The Heights,” “The Color Purple,” “Spamalot,” “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “History Boys” — has been chasing an adaptation of the story for nearly a decade.
Set in the 1800s, “My Last Skirt” tells the story of Hodgers, who went by the name Albert Cashier to enlist and serve her country. Following the war, Hodgers would live as Cashier for much of her life after observing the disparity in opportunity for women of the age. She is also believed to be...

Blasting off Sunday evening at the Tribeca Festival, Space Oddity is a small, character-driven dramedy of one young man’s odd life-altering plan to take a one-way ticket to Mars just as love and family intervene on his plans. If that premise sounds improbable, it actually is the kind of thing that seems to be popping up lately as fodder for various indie-centric film festivals. Earlier this year at SXSW, we saw comedian Jim Gaffigan in Linoleum, where he plays a father and husband whose lifelong dream of being an astronaut takes flight when he builds a rocket ship in his garage to do just that. Like Space Oddity, which comes from Kyra Sedgwick directing a Black List script by Rebecca Banner, that film focused on the rather offbeat behavior of its central character, much to the chagrin of his family.

Exclusive: Solstice Studios has optioned feature film rights to Reeves Wiedeman’s New York Magazine article “The Big Hack,” which depicts what experts describe as a plausible doomsday disaster scenario caused by a wide-scale cyberattack on New York City. The recent Colonial pipeline hack purportedly executed by a Russian ransomware group that is spiking gas prices on the East Coast makes the cautionary tale timely.
The article paints a scenario where hackers gain control of everything from the ignition and steering wheels of cars to hospital computers, subways and electricity, plunging the city into total chaos. All of these and other systems are subject to black hat hackers that simply sent Usb sticks to engineers that operate power facilities, promising explanation of benefits. When some of those engineers plugged in the Usb sticks at work, hackers had control. The article appears in the June 13 issue of the mag.

Lionsgate is in early talks to produce the young Hillary Clinton biopic "Rodham".
The 2012 Black List script by South Korean screenwriter Young Il Kim is set during the height of the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. At the time, Hillary Rodham was the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon.
She soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House, and her unresolved feelings for former boyfriend and Arkansas law teacher Bill Clinton.
No actress is currently attached despite director James Ponsoldt ("The Spectacular Now") having met with actresses over the summer. Richard Arlook, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing.
That the project is alive is a surprise considering how other recent Hillary-related projects like NBC's mini-series and CNN's documentary all quietly disappeared this past summer.

Annnd we're back to Air Force One Square One.
While last week it looked like the sweet and cheeky Carey Mulligan was a sure fit for the supposedly coveted part of a young, ambitious, pre-flotus Hillary Clinton in James Ponsoldt's biopic, "Rodham" — you know, apart from being a limey 'lil Brit (all the fist shakes!) — she's now decided to pull herself out of the role race.
With all the attention surrounding the development of Young Il Kim's 2012 Black-Listed script, which is being shaped for shooting alongside Ponsoldt right now, why would such a promising up-and-comer throw in the towel so late in the game?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulligan was outright offered the role last week after a chit-chat with "The Spectacular Now" director, who is helming the biopic, but she declined the opportunity because she just wasn't prepared to commit to the project yet ... So, basically just a non-answer then.

She soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House, and her unresolved feelings for former boyfriend and Arkansas law teacher Bill Clinton.
James Ponsoldt helms the project and said: "They're all wonderful actresses. We're very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We're in an enviable position."
Richard Arlook, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing.

An interesting new project for one of my favorite up-and-coming directors - James Ponsoldt. He directed last year's underseen but outstanding indie gem Smashed and has this year's The Spectacular Now coming up for release in August. During the festival he got attached to an adaptation of the Pure series of books, now he's looking to stay more dramatic with a biopic. The Wrap is reporting that Ponsoldt is now attached to direct Rodham, an indie movie about politician Hillary Rodham Clinton's early years during Watergate. The script, by Young Il Kim, is from the 2012 Black List and is in the works at Temple Hill Entertainment. The project is in early development with producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen at Temple Hill, plus Richard Arlook of the Arlook Group. Apparently they're planning "to attach an actress to the project before shopping it to studios and independent financiers," however "several...

There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...

Exclusive: Though the 2012 Sundance Film Festival is starting to fade from memory, buyers and sellers continue to make unhurried deals for the films that premiered there. Image Entertainment has just acquired U.S. rights to Christopher Neil’s coming-of-age stoner film Goats for what I’m hearing was near $1 million. The film premiered January 24 at the Eccles Theater and buyers sparked to the performances by David Duchovny, Vera Farmiga, Ty Burrell and Graham Phillips. Christopher Neil directed and Mark Jude Poirier wrote the script. The film is based on the Mark Jude Poirier novel, in which a guy leaves his unconventional desert home to attend the disciplined and structured Gates Academy. There, he re-connects with his estranged father and for the first time questions the family dynamics. The film was produced by Red Crown Productions’ Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Shannon Lail and Eric Kopeloff. Executive Producers include Peter Touche, whose Sandia Media partially financed the film,...

Exclusive: Justin Reardon, whose highlights in commercials include co-creating (and serving as the art director) on the memorable Wassup! and the Howaydoin' campaigns for Budweiser, will make his feature directing debut on Convention, a comedy that will be sold at the Cannes Film Festival by Hollywood Studios International. Scripted by Christopher Painter (The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) and produced by Paul Schiff and Tai Duncan, Convention takes place at a national packaging convention, where an underachieving inventor unveils his latest creation -- the 5-sided box. It seems like a game-changing innovation, until the inventor learns that each time he makes the special fold involved in assembling the box, he's ripping a small hole in the universe. If the invention takes hold, it might end the world. The film will begin production in the fall, with Hsi chairman/CEO Steven Saxton and Hsi president Eric Christenson exec producing. ICM...
