Boxing champ-turned-politician Alexis Arguello has died after shooting himself in the heart, according to reports.
Arguello, nicknamed 'The Explosive Thin Man', was a world champion in three weight divisions during his 1980s and 90s heyday. He retired in 1995 with a record of 82 wins and just eight defeats.
After his retirement, Arguello went into politics and was elected mayor of the Nicaraguan capital Managua just last year.
Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Arguello was found dead at his home on Wednesday.
Reports suggest the 57 year old shot himself through the heart.
He is already being honoured at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in New York, which inducted him in 1992, where flags were flying at half-staff in his honour on Wednesday.
