Sin and Damnation – How Scott Derrickson’s Underrated ‘Hellraiser: Inferno’ Rises Above Expectations
At the recent Silver Scream Con, I was surprised to hear Hellraiser star Doug Bradley remark, “The only one in the series I feel doesn’t work is Inferno, for various reasons.” I had always considered the 2000 effort one of the franchise’s stronger offerings, but it had been a while since I revisited the series, so I thought it may not hold up as well as I remembered.
As I’m working my way through the series ahead of David Bruckner‘s reboot, which drops October 7 on Hulu, I can confirm my support for the fifth installment. I have no doubt that Bradley has his reasons for disliking the film – it being the first installment to be released straight to video no doubt required adjustments, not to mention his minuscule screen time as Pinhead – but, even with its shortcomings, I think Hellraiser: Inferno is better than he gives it credit for.

Carmen Argenziano, an actor best known for his roles in “Stargate Sg-1” and “The Godfather Part II,” has died, talent agency Event Horizon Talent confirmed Sunday in a Facebook post. He was 75.
“While Carmen was a client, he was also a good friend. While he was a class act and a consummate gentleman at the events he was booked for, he was also a caring and generous person,” the post reads. “While I had known him for more than a decade, it wasn’t until the past 3 years as a con [sic.] representative for him that our trust and friendship grew and blossomed. He truly treated me like family, and that sentiment was returned.”
With more than 200 film and television appearances under his belt, Argenziano boasted a prolific acting career that spanned almost 50 years, seven of which he spent in his most popular role of Jacob Carter/Selmak in the hit series “Stargate Sg-1.

Carmen Argenziano, an actor familiar from hundreds of episodic TV guest spots, a recurring Stargate Sg-1 role, an appearance in The Godfather Part 2 and, most recently, a TV commercial for Aarp that cast him as the epitome of an helpful husband who takes the trash out before being asked, died Sunday. He was 75.
His death was announced by his personal appearance agency Event Horizon Talent. A cause of death was not disclosed.
With more than 200 credits lists on his IMdB page, Argenziano’s acting career stretches back 50 years to 1969’s Judd for the Defense, and proceeded on to appearances in such popular drama and cop series as Kojak, The F.B.I., Police Woman, Police Story and The Bionic Woman. He played one of Michael Corleone’s soldiers in The Godfather Part II, and later recurred on L.A. Law., CSI: NY and daytime’s The Young and the Restless.

Join me as we take a trip down memory lane, before cell phones and instant notifications and Dm’s and everything else that makes me sound like an informational paranoid and crotchety old man. Let’s take a look at an urban legend stretched out to feature length with Fred Walton’s When a Stranger Calls (1979), a mesmerizing-then-decent-then-gripping suspense thriller.
Released by Columbia Pictures stateside in late October, When a Stranger Calls was a big hit with audiences, returning over $21 million against a $1.5 million budget. Critics were quicker to hang up, however; although nearly all praised the opening 20 minute set up, filled as it is with a promise impossible to match. That’s okay though, because I still think When a Stranger Calls is ultimately worth staying on the line for.

In the sci-fi film Singularity, John Cusack stars as the CEO of a company that is about to release a "super computer designed to end all wars." But, as you would guess, the computer determines that humans are the real problem and must be eradicated. It unleashes an army of robots upon the world. Cusack is joined by a cast that includes Julian Schaffner, Jeannine Wacker, Eileen Grubba, and Carmen Argenziano. I will say this movie doesn't look very good at all. It's the kind of trailer that leaves you asking, why is Cusack making a movie this terrible? It doesn't even try to hide the fact that this is just a blending of The Terminator and The Matrix.
In 2020, Elias van Dorne (John Cusack), CEO of Va Industries, the world's largest robotics company, introduces his most powerful invention--Kronos, a super computer designed to end all wars. When Kronos goes online,...

"I am a survivor. But I am not alone." Voltage Pictures has released an official trailer for a super weird, out-of-nowhere sci-fi film called Singularity, in reference to the theoretical "singularity" moment within computing / technology. John Cusack stars as the CEO of a company that is about to released a "super computer designed to end all wars." Surprise! The computer determines humans must be eradicated, and unleashes an army of robots upon the world. This is less like Transcendence, much more of a Terminator rip-off meets Transformers meets Divergent, or something like that. The cast includes Julian Schaffner, Jeannine Wacker, Eileen Grubba, and Carmen Argenziano. It can also be filed under why-is-John-Cusack-making-such-terrible-movies, since it looks as bad as they come. This is one trailer worth skipping. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Robert Kouba's Singularity, direct from Voltage's YouTube: In 2020, Elias van Dorne (John Cusack), CEO of Va Industries,...

Just after the school year ended in June 1984, I went to a friend’s house on a Friday night to watch the premiere of Carlin on Campus, an HBO concert of one of my favorite comedians, the legendary George Carlin. When the concert was over, my friend switched around until he reached NBC-tv. They were airing When A Stranger Calls, a 1979 thriller starring Carol Kane, Charles Durning, and Colleen Dewhurst. I saw the film from the beginning, and the first twenty or so minutes had me utterly captivated. It presented a scenario that I found to be terrifying, and apparently so did Rex Reed, whose proclamation “some of the most terrifying sequences ever filmed” was used in the newspaper ads. I thought it was so original – until I saw Bob Clark’s frightening Black Christmas (1974) four years later and saw where the “inspiration” may have come from.

Laura, played very briefly by Ruth Ann Llorens (The Comeback Kid) is a talented high school track runner who meets her demise during a race, where she collapses and dies on the spot in front of her whole school (how embarrassing! Even more so due to the fact she won!) Fingers are immediately pointed towards Coach Michaels, played by the ever charming Christopher George (City of the Living Dead, The Exterminator) because he is a determined and often ruthless son of a gun! A couple of months pass and Laura’s sister Anne, played by Patch Mackenzie (Serial, It’s Alive 3) returns home from the Navy to honour her sister’s graduation.

With Red Scorpion out now on Blu-ray, we take a look at what this 80s action fest can teach us about guerrilla warfare…
Standing at six feet five inches tall, Dolph Lundgren was the strapping alpha male of 80s cinema. After landing a tiny role in the James Bond movie A View To A Kill in 1985, the latter half of the decade saw the chemical engineering graduate, ex-bodyguard and Karate champion at the height of his rippling powers.
Lundgren punched Apollo Creed to death in front of James Brown in Rocky IV in 1985, starred as He-Man in Masters Of The Universe in 1987, and two years after that, headed off to Namibia to shoot his toughest assignment yet: the action epic, Red Scorpion.
Apparently fated to play Russian characters – his brief appearance in the 007 flick was as a Kgb henchman – Lundgren plays Nikolai Rachenko, an elite Soviet soldier sent on a mission to Africa.

Usually the round-robin style of going through suspects on Castle (TV) leaves my head spinning. But this is the first time the murder victim was almost irrelevant. Almost. Len Levitt's body gets assaulted by two BMX bike riders in the park. He's got a broken wrist and a few bullet wounds in his chest and back. There is also a bird feather in his pocket, which Castle (Nathan Fillion) immediately expounds upon as the calling card of some diabolical killer from a Sherlock Holmes novel. Lanie (Tamala Jones) is confused because the bullet wounds are at different depths. As though he were shot in the chest long range and then shot in the back at close range. Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) check out Len's apartment and find a myriad of weird things. A number board counting into the millions, a map with red marks all over it,...

When "Lie to Me" comes back next week, someone will be kidnapped and the unlucky guy is Dave Burns who is played by guest star Max Martini. He gets beaten pretty bad and has to face Tim Roth's Dr. Cal Lightman with bloody face.
Dave is Dr. Gillian Foster's boyfriend whom Lightman tries to track down with the help of Burns' mysterious ex-partner after going missing. Beside Max Martini, the other guest stars include Danai Gurira, Keston John, Edward Hendershott, Darrell Lake, Christopher Stanley and Carmen Argenziano.
Previously on "Lie to Me", Lightman must re-visit a case from 17 years ago. Jason Wilkie with the help of Cal was convicted of the murder of 8-year-old Rex Sheridan, but when the Sheridan family is targeted again he must face the possibility that he sent an innocent man to his death. Lightman becomes determined to uncover the truth once and for all.

Crime procedurals often get lumped into one large genre with little distinguishing qualifications made to separate them from one another. If any distinction is made it’s between the more technically oriented CSI and the more character driven Law and Order series, of which there are many. Criminal Minds takes a third route and explores an alternate venue: the psychological profile. With a new serial killer for each episode, you’d think the shtick would have gotten tired by its fourth season; but you’d be wrong. The show remains as compelling as ever and makes for some great episodic television.
Since Mandy Patinkin (as Jason Gideon) walked off the set of Criminal Minds after the second season, the reins fell into the lap of Agent Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), Gideon’s once right-hand man. Under Hotch, the Behavioral Analysis Unit has successfully profiled dozens of killers and remained a tight-knit group.
