The Nielsen live-plus-same-day data for Wednesday, April 10 is in, and most of the late-night shows shed viewers from comparable evenings. CBS’ 11:35 p.m. offering averaged 1,736,000 total viewers and 212,000 P18-49 viewers on Wednesday. That represents a -7% loss in total viewers and -15% loss in P18-49 viewers from the the day before, a -7% loss in total viewers and -7% loss in P18-49 viewers from the previous Wednesday episode.

Jon Stewart called out Fox News on The Daily Show for their eclipse coverage with an immigration angle.
As North America prepared to witness the solar eclipse, Fox News warned viewers of the threat to the southern border that this represented.
“We are told that officials are bracing for higher traffic than usual and that means a real opportunity for smugglers and cartels and migrants to come right in,” Bill Hemmer said on the cable network after co-host Dana Perino said the eclipse would last about four minutes.
Stewart quipped, “Or they could just wait til nighttime.”
The Comedy Central host then questioned if there was anything Fox News couldn’t tie to immigration, mocking the anchors and saying, “This year’s cicada infestation provides perfect cover for Venezuelans.”
Later on in the show, Stewart had Christiane Amanpour as a guest who called the eclipse “beautiful.”

She’s CNN’s Chief International Anchor, hosts two shows for the cable news network, and one for PBS, but tonight Christiane Amanpour is taking her act to Comedy Central.
Amanpour is set to sit down with Jon Stewart tonight on The Daily Show. It will be her fifth time appearing on the show–she guested twice with Stewart during his initial run on the show, and appeared three times when Trevor Noah was behind the Daily Show desk.
Tonight’s show will mark Stewart’s eighth episode since returning to The Daily Show anchor desk Monday nights in February.
Stewart’s Monday nights have proven to be a huge draw for the Comedy Central series, drawing 2-3 times the number of total viewers the show was averaging last fall per live-plus-same-day Nielsen ratings (and even more in delayed viewing). The show has also seen a halo effect on nights the Stewart isn’t hosting,...

The issue of gender has been one of the hottest topics in the entertainment industry for years now. And while it was normal for male stars to be paid significantly more than female stars back in the days, women today are fighting for equal pay without any gender-related prejudice, which is absolutely great and a necessity. And while there are some brilliant examples, the situation still isn’t great, and there are still some major issues in this aspect.
Recently, CNN sat down for a talk with Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, who gave an interview to the network’s Christiane Amanpour as part of her show called The Amanpour Hour. The two of them discussed numerous topics, but one of the more interesting ones that was talked about was pay inequality based on gender, which is what we have talked about in the introduction.

Olivia Colman got candid about the gender pay disparity in Hollywood during a recent appearance on CNN’s “The Amanpour Hour.”
“Don’t get me started on the pay disparity, but male actors get paid more because they used to say they drew in the audiences,” Colman said. “And actually, that hasn’t been true for decades, but they still like to use that as a reason to not pay women as much as their male counterparts.”
Host Christiane Amanpour then asked Colman if she has experienced pay disparity herself, despite being an Oscar winner.
“I’m very aware that if I was Oliver Colman, I’d be earning a fuck of a lot more than I am,” “The Crown” star said in response. “I know of one pay disparity, which is a 12,000% difference. Do the maths, I know.”

A group of top international journalists have joined forces to demand that Israel and Egypt provide foreign media with “unfettered access” to Gaza.
Fifty-five presenters and correspondents have signed an open letter that also appeals for better protections for local press already reporting in the territory.
Among the signatories are CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Sky News journalist Alex Crawford, and Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s international editor. Other news networks represented include ITV, Channel 4, ABC, NBC, and CBS.

Following the release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” AMC Theatres, the world’s biggest cinema chain, is releasing Nenad Cicin-Sain’s documentary “Kiss the Future” on Feb. 23.
The exclusive run of the 102-minute docu, which premiered in February 2023 at the Berlin Film Festival, is a major feat for the film, which chronicles the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. Although the film features an awe inspiring U2 performance during a 1997 post-war concert celebrating the city’s hard-fought triumph over ethnic nationalism, “Kiss the Future” is not a shiny, shimmering, bombastic pop doc. Instead it’s a docu that chronicles the breakup of Yugoslavia and the onset of war in Bosnia. In the film citizens struggle to survive the siege of Sarajevo and ultimately turn to rock and punk music for inspiration and distraction from the daily nightmare of Serbian shells and snipers.

"Having a disco in the middle of a war is the only thing that kept us going." AMC Theatres has revealed an official trailer for an outstanding documentary film titled Kiss the Future, from filmmaker Nenad Cicin-Sain. This premiered at the Berlinale 2023 but didn't make much of an impact there (I was one of the only ones to see it). Thankfully AMC has stepped up and is giving it a proper nationwide release in AMC cinemas later in February. Kiss the Future celebrates the underground art & music scene that thrived during the siege of Sarajevo. The biggest band in the world, U2, lead by Bono, paid attention and shined a light on the crisis in an effort to support the besieged Sarajevans. The film culminates in a post-war unification concert. A cautionary tale about the rise of nationalism, and an uplifting celebration of the power of the human spirit and...

Not that many are expecting Tucker Carlson to be a source of absolute truth, but his claim that Western journalists haven’t even tried to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine is being ripped by reporters who have been trying to do exactly that for years.
The former Fox News personality’s Tuesday announcement that he’s interviewed Putin included the claim that journalists have done “scores of interviews” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky but “not a single Western journalist has bothered to interview the president of the other country involved in this conflict, Vladimir Putin. Most Americans have no idea why Putin invaded Ukraine or what his goals are now. They’ve never heard his voice. That’s wrong.”
First, Putin’s reasons for invading Ukraine have been widely and repeatedly reported in the U.S. from his speeches and official statements (which often include his “voice”).

Update: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Tucker Carlson interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
Per The Guardian, Peskov told reporters, “When it comes to the countries of the collective west, the large network media, TV channels, [and] large newspapers can in no way boast of even trying to at least look impartial in terms of coverage,” Peskov said.
“These are all media outlets that take an exceptionally one-sided position. Of course, there is no desire to communicate with such media, and it hardly makes sense, and it is unlikely that it will be useful.”
Peskov, though, acknowledged that the Kremlin does receive “numerous requests” from major media outlets to interview Putin, according to the news site Meduza. That contradicts Carlson’s claim that U.S. journalists have not even bothered to try to interview the Russian leader.

MSNBC is shaking up its weekend schedule as CNN’s Saturday and Sunday offerings continue to provide strong competition.
The NBCUniversal cable-news outlet plans to a launch a new panel show, “The Weekend,” co-moderated by Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend and Michael Steele that will air Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and will cancel a nighttime show anchored by the outspoke Mehdi Hasan. Those move will not only consolidate anchors who had been active on the weekend schedule in their own time slots, but leave room for broad change.
MSNBC’s weekend schedule has long been edged out by CNN among viewers between 25 and 54 — the audience most coveted by advertisers in news programming. CNN launched a new Saturday-morning lineup in November featuring Victor Blackwell,. Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour, and paced ahead of MSNBC in both that demographic and total viewers, according to recent data from Nielsen.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton blasted supporters of former President Donald Trump, particularly in the wake of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

While Clinton predicts that Trump will likely be the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, she believes Joe Biden will be able to beat him a second time.

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

Kristen Welker’s first broadcast of Meet the Press on Sunday will feature a pre-taped interview with former President Donald Trump.
The interview will take place on Thursday in Bedminster, NJ, and it will be Trump’s first broadcast network sitdown since leaving office.
The network has stressed that the interview is not a town hall and there is no live audience, and the same invite has been extended to President Joe Biden. The sitdown also will be accompanied by a fact check on NBCNews.com. They also pointed to a quote that David Gelles, the executive producer of Meet the Press, gave to The Poynter Report: “We are in the business of covering politics. It’s not our job to pick and choose the leaders. The American people get to do that. And so our job is to make sure that the American people understand who the people in power are,...

While “My Next Guest With David Letterman” executive producers had previously pulled off intimate sit-downs with culture-makers like Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Cardi B, producing an in-depth conversation in a Ukrainian war zone was certainly not in their repertoire before pursuing an interview with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The idea to interview Zelenskyy started with producer Tommy Alter, and scored Letterman’s immediate enthusiasm as the host told EP Tom Keaney, “this is the only thing I want to do.”
“I think Dave’s immediate reaction was probably generated by the fact that this is a world event that’s happening in real time,” EP and Imagine president Justin Wilkes told TheWrap, adding that it was “still fairly early days in the war.” “He’s one of the most interesting people on the planet right now, and wouldn’t it be interesting to go talk to him and see...

You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.
CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. Warner Bros. Discovery is back in the hunt for a new executive to oversee CNN.
Mark Thompson, the former CEO of New York Times Co. and a former Director-General of the BBC is “in the mix” of potential candidates being considered by the media conglomerate, according to two people familiar with the matter. Warner Bros. Discovery is putting itself through a “thorough process,” according to one of these people, to find a new leader for its popular news outlet as it grapples with linear ratings shortfalls and attempts to make its way through the world of streaming.
CNN referred inquiries on the matter to Warner Bros. Discovery, which declined to make executives available for comment. Semafor previously reported that Thompson was on the company’s list of CNN candidates.

U2 frontman Bono made a surprise appearance Friday night at the opening ceremony of the Sarajevo Film Festival, with the Irish pop star leading a rapturous crowd in an a cappella rendition of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.”
The legendary vocalist took the stage after an emotional screening of “Kiss the Future,” director Nenad Cicin-Sain’s documentary, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, about U2’s relationship with war-torn Sarajevo in the 1990s. He was accompanied by bandmate the Edge and their wives, Ali Hewson and Morleigh Steinberg, along with model and activist Christy Turlington and veteran CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour.

Based on American-born aid worker Bill Carter’s “Fools Rush in: A Memoir,” “Kiss the Future” chronicles the band’s efforts to publicize the plight of the city’s besieged civilians during the Bosnian War.

One notable thing about the headlines coming out of CNN in recent weeks is something they don’t include: news about CNN itself.
Since the exit of former chief Chris Licht in June after a tenure marked by tumult and unwanted publicity, the gossip mill around the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet has ceased its once-dependable roar. There are no leaks about what happened at CNN’s morning editorial meeting, or chatter about how current leaders Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley and Eric Sherling talk (or don’t) to the staff. There is even less hubbub about David Leavy, the longtime consigliere who was recently installed to oversee business affairs. and is a longtime consigliere to Warner Bros. Discovery honcho David Zaslav,
People familiar with the network say there is a sense of “relief” within its ranks. It won’t last for very long.
To be sure, CNN still has work to do.

The abrupt yet not-all-too-surprising exit of Chris Licht from CNN is a bit of a relief for staffers who thought he was the wrong person for the job, but whoever succeeds him at the cable news network will face many of the same headwinds.
Declining ratings and profits are the immediate challenges, but the longer-term project will be to carve out CNN’s place in an era of cord-cutting and streaming.
Speculation over who would succeed Licht after the news broke of his exit Wednesday quickly focused on Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content development, as a potential permanent CEO. Entelis was among the executives named among interim leaders of the network, as she was last year after Jeff Zucker’s abrupt resignation.
The buzz over who may be the next CEO may not be as important as just what Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav wants.

The departure of CNN’s Chris Licht, following his turbulent year atop the cable news network, places a pause on one of the great media stories of the decade so far. But even non-media-junkies can appreciate just how strange and how strenuously rocking had been Licht’s time at the network: It played out across screens. The trouble with being the place that invented the 24-hour news cycle is that those hours can come back to bite when you’re the story.

CNN Worldwide chairman and CEO Chris Licht addressed the bombshell profile in The Atlantic in comments to network staffers on Monday, telling them, “I should not be in the news unless it’s taking arrows for you.”
Licht indicated that he had been doing “a lot of thinking” over the weekend about the profile, and said that his role had become a distraction. According to multiple sources, Licht apologized, and told staffers, “CNN is not about me.”
Over months, Licht granted extraordinary access to The Atlantic’s Tim Alberta in a piece that ultimately was headlined, “Inside the Meltdown at CNN.” The profile underscored the tumult at the network, including the decision to go forward with a town hall with former President Donald Trump that featured a cheering audience of supporters who laughed when he made light of a sexual abuse verdict against him.

Forty-three years ago last week, CNN launched as an ambitious attempt to revolutionize TV news. Now it’s at the center of the media universe, and looking to redefine itself once again. While CNN’s launch on June 1, 1980, was marked by celebration, the experience in 2023 was, in the words of one former CNN journalist, one of “melancholy.”
On Monday morning, CNN CEO Chris Licht addressed his division’s employees on the daily editorial call, telling them he will “fight like hell” to win back their trust, and that they “deserve a leader who will be in the trenches” fighting for them.
It was a mea culpa that was warmly received after a week of confusion about his future at the network, and a story about CNN that rocked the channel.
First, the venerable cable news channel announced that David Leavy, a top lieutenant to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav,...

The frenzied question of “Will Chris Licht survive?” is on the minds of media pundits everywhere after a devastating, 16,000-word takedown of the CNN chief that ran in The Atlantic magazine on Friday.
That question is exactly what moves the gossip mill. It’s juicy. But it misses the point.
The actual question is: How should CNN cover the news? What is the path and mission for a defining media property that is central to the health of our democracy?
Or to put it most starkly: What is CNN?
As a nation, we no longer tune in to network evening news and there is no defining, trusted voice in broadcast in morning, evening or late night. Decision-makers and cognoscenti of all stripes watch cable news. Ratings leader Fox News Channel...

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav backed the continued leadership of CNN CEO Chris Licht on Thursday, arguing that he is “rebuilding the network.”
The comments came during the MoffettNathanson Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference — and just days after Licht came under fire for hosting former president Donald Trump for the first town hall of his 2024 reelection campaign.
Zaslav contended that even when CNN’s ratings were good, the news network had a perception problem. “The overall brand,” he said, “the perception of the brand, was left lean.”
In fact, YouGov found last year that CNN was “the most politically polarizing media outlet” in the country.
But things appear to be changing, the CEO continued, pointing to a new survey that found overall trust in the network is growing.

“Republicans are back on the air. Republicans weren’t on the air,” on CNN, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told a media conference Thursday as he said the storied brand is moving to become less of an “advocacy network” under new leadership.
“During the McCarthy hearings, for those four days, we had 75 Republicans on the air, 41 went on us before they want on Fox [News]. And the reason is, as I’ve said, and Chris [CNN chief Chris Licht] has too, to a number of them, they are not going to get one more vote on Fox News. They’ve already got that.” He was referring to successive votes over four days in January as the GOP struggled to unite its ranks to reach a victory for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said CNN is rebuilding itself to be a news network that presents “both sides” of every issue rather than an “advocacy network” — comments coming as CNN continues to face a backlash over the town hall with Donald Trump last week.
Zaslav, speaking at the MoffettNathanson Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in New York, said that previously the overall impression of CNN’s brand was that it was “left-leaning.” That’s now changing, he said, citing a new YouGov poll finding an 11-point improvement in U.S. viewers’ trust in CNN. “Our view is, there’s advocacy networks on either side. We have the best journalists in the world. We need to show both sides of every issue,” he said.

CNN is still feeling the heat for airing Donald Trump‘s recent town hall, even from those who work for the news network. Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor, spoke about the network’s decision to broadcast the event while talking to the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism on Wednesday, where she was accepting the Columbia Journalism Award. “We know Trump and his tendencies; everyone does. He just seizes the stage and dominates. No matter how much flack the moderator tries to aim at the incoming, it doesn’t often work. I would have dropped the mic at ‘nasty person,’ but then that’s me,” Amanpour said, per Variety. The “nasty person” comment was in reference to what Trump called moderator Kaitlan Collins during the town hall. Amanpour revealed that she met with CNN chair and CEO Chris Licht earlier this week, stating they “had a very robust...
