"They're always there. They're like ghosts," says George A. Romero. The Godfather of the Living Dead isn't referring to one of the ravenous monsters from his movies, but rather movies themselves... the ones he never got to make. Films that never made it out of Development Hell are the focus of Untold Horror, a new project from Dave Alexander and Mark Pollesel that features filmmakers—including George A. Romero, John Landis, and more—discussing their films and passionate ideas that never came to fruition.
In addition to reflecting on films that never came to be, Untold Horror is also helping to resurrect these passion projects, beginning with George A. Romero's The Little World of Humongo Bongo, a children's book that will be released later this year. To learn more about Untold Horror, we have the official press release with full details, as well as the series' trailer:

Former horror magazine editor Dave Alexander has a new gig. Luckily for movie fans, it’s to uncover some of the greatest horror movies that never made it to fruition. Alexander launched multimedia production company Untold Horror, which is also the name of his upcoming documentary series.
The former editor is now set to write and co-produce “Untold Horror,” a new multi-part series that explores the secret history of why some of the most highly anticipated horror movies never made it past production – and, in some cases, development.

Two hot TV projects, an environmental zombie and an unhinged park ranger were among highlights at the eighth edition of the horror market.
Frontières International Co-Production Market continued to showcase its growth at Fantasia International Film Festival as it kicked off its eighth edition on Thursday [July 21].
Earlier this year, the genre market announced a new partnership with the Marché du Film at Cannes, and the popularity of its pitching session at Fantasia meant that it moved to the festival’s bigger venue to accommodate the growing industry interest.
This edition’s 20 projects also saw the market’s remit expand to include two television projects for the first time.
House Of Psychotic Women from Rook Films, behind the likes of Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers and Peter Strickland’s The Duke Of Burgundy, is based on horror critic Kier-La Janisse’s acclaimed memoir.

After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...

I cannot tell you how often we here at Dread Central are asked to recommend some good horror movies. Most of the time when we answer, we're met with a kind of stunned silence because 8 times out of 10 the same people asking have never heard of our recommendations.
Now, instead of just naming titles, we can direct the inquisitive chill seeker to a single book... Dr. AC Presents Hidden Horror. Having had a chance to peruse this terror tome, we can assure you that it's nothing short of an indispensable resource to those new to the genre as well as those who are as jaded as they come. The holidays are coming, kids! We recommend this be added to the shopping list Asap. If not... Santa Will Punish, and rightly so!

Next to Stan Lee, directing legend John Carpenter was most likely the biggest guest to grace Toronto’s FanExpo convention in 2012 and was certainly the guest that every horror fan wanted to see.
John Carpenter has always been one of those genre-bending directors that is equally comfortable jumping from horror film (Halloween, The Fog, Vampires) to science fiction films (Escape from New York, They Live, The Thing) but deep down has always been a filmmaker of westerns.
During the Q&A hosted by Rue Morgue Magazine editor Dave Alexander at FanExpo, John Carpenter touched on all areas of his career and why he Really loves the sequels and remakes of his movies.
Here are a few highlights…
Q: On being influenced by Hitchcock…..
John Carpenter: Well I was drawn to all types of movies when I was young. I saw Alfred Hitchcock films but I didn’t understand Alfred Hitchcock films.

What often defines me as a writer, much to the chagrin of certain members of the intellectual old guard, is that I approach bargain basement genre films with the same enthusiasm and critical eye as I would something from Godard, Bergman, or Kurosawa. There is merit to be found in almost any film, and where there is not–even when judged within distinctive criteria–is when a movie has truly failed. This passion for all things celluloid, for a wider palate of films that would have someone more traditionally academic than myself expectorating with disdain, appears to be one of the core principles upon which the Fantasia Film Fest was founded. This year, the Montreal-based festival’s sixteenth in existence, Fantasia opted to construct an event that perfectly encapsulates this love for obscure cinema and packages it in the most artistically adept fashion possible. Dave Alexander, editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue magazine, assembled...

Jim Morrison died at 27, like Janis Joplin died at 27, like Jimi Hendrix died at 27, like Kurt Cobain died at 27. Like Amy Winehouse died at 27. Are rock and pop gods cursed to die at that specific age? Statistically, no. Among the 173 acts inducted to date into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as performers, there are only seven singers or musicians who belong to the so-called 27 Club, as mythologized and compiled at the likes of The Forever 27 Club and Wikipedia: Morrison; Joplin; Hendrix; the Drifters' Rudy Lewis; the Grateful Dead's Ron McKernan; the Rolling Stones' Brian Jones; and the Stooges' Dave Alexander. That leaves dozens upon dozens of legendary performers who...

It’s been five days since we last checked in, and despite watching movies every day, there’s been little to report. Maybe it’s just the exhaustion talking, but this thought just keeps pounding through my Fantasia addled brain - “Where are all the good horror movies at this year?” It’s not like it’s a problem with the festival programming. Fantasia has an impenetrable track record of picking nothing but the best, most innovative, and most extreme horror so what’s going on?
Part of the issue is the popularity of certain titles. For example, we still haven’t seen Rubber due to its constant sell-out status. Other films, like The Revenant (which everyone seems to love), we’ve missed due to Fantasia-fatigue brought on by too many three-movie days followed up by all-night discussions (and uh, beer). Other whole categories seem to have dried up. Compared to years past,...

Detroit rockers Iggy Pop and the Stooges will headline this year’s Nxne fest with a Free Outdoor concert @ Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, June 19.
Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, the first incarnation of The Stooges was 1967 to 1974, founded by 'Iggy Pop' (James Newell Osterberg), looking to create 'a new form' of blues music. The Stooges, widely regarded as instrumental in the rise of punk rock, alternative rock and heavy metal were inducted into the Us "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" as part of the 'Class of 2010'.

New York — It opened with a Phish show, nearly exploded into a (very well-heeled) proto-punk riot, got giddy on a fix of sunshiny Swedish pop, and finally wrapped up with a '50's-tinged tribute. It was the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, back in NYC after a one-year sojourn in Cleveland (where the titular hall actually exists). And while it may have been lacking the star power of previous years' ceremonies — Eminem and Metallica in 2009, Madonna and Justin Timberlake in '08 — it certainly showcased the breadth and depth of this thing we call rock music.

Issue #91
July 2009
It’s only fitting that the sole Canadian amongst the rest of these DC yankie yahoos would eventually wind up writing the monthly recap of Rue-Morgue magazine. It’s especially apropos, given my primary contribution to Dread Central, that the first issue I’m reviewing happens to contain not only an overview of the upcoming Fantasia film festival, but also a seriously kick ass article from Fantasia’s resident renegade programmer, Mitch Davis.
But before that, let’s start off with Jovanka’s editorial. The July issue cover story is a 10 year retrospective of The Blair Witch Project. As is her habit, Jovanka is honest in her assessment of Blair Witch; she didn’t really like it when she first saw it. I can’t say I disagree. I missed the internet marketing blitz by being out of the country, and without it, the film really fell flat.

Issue #87
March 2009
I want to know who it was that invented the term “torture porn”. Something tells me it was one of the “mainstream” press outlets like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter. My curiosity comes from the endless parade of films that either jump on the label or try their damndest to avoid it being applied, even though in my eyes it’s a very specific sub-genre of films that can be called “torture porn”, and most of them I don’t want anything to do with.
So it bothered me a bit when Rue Morgue labeled Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs “transcendent torture porn” on their latest cover because to me it feels like it cheapens the film. I have not seen it, however, so who knows; maybe it’s the best label one could apply, despite the obvious negative connotations it has for me.

Issue #82
September 2008
I’ll be honest with you guys. I think there’s been a total of one Alice Cooper song I’ve actually liked in my entire life (“Poison”, from back when I was a little headbanger). I was never a fan of Welcome to my Nightmare or pretty much anything else the original shock rocker has done, but that in no way devalues the contributions he’s made to both music and horror. I just don’t like the guy’s voice.
This issue is all about Cooper, thanks to the release of his latest concept album Along Came a Spider, about a serial killer who’s slowly building his own spider from the parts of his victims ... or is he? Yeah, I should warn you the interview with Alice does reveal quite a few spoilers about the album’s storyline, so you may want to read with caution.
