Somewhere, at this very moment, someone's dad is probably watching one of the Jesse Stone movies on DVD, and that man is having a great afternoon. After this, he might pop in "Ford v. Ferrari" for the seventh time.
The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. Jesse Stone had become an institution at that point, and other authors began writing Stone novels in Parker's style. There have been 11 additional Jesse Stone novels written after Parker's death.

Who would have thought that one of the more enduring family movies in the last 20 years would come from Brett Ratner and star Nicolas Cage? Indeed, The Family Man was only a modest success when it came out over the holiday season in 2000, but it has since inspired rip-offs and remakes and is a beloved classic for many of us.
In it, Nicolas Cage plays a high-flying businessman named Jack Campbell, who doesn’t appreciate the little things in life, such as Christmas. It’s lonely at the top, but he consoles himself with his Ferrari, penthouse apartment in New York, and hook-ups with women such as supermodel Amber Valletta, who has a small role as his bedmate early in the film. Yet, being alone on Christmas Eve, he does a good deed when he intervenes in a convenience store standoff by showing empathy towards a wired, gun-toting customer, played by Don Cheadle,...

The Jake Gyllenhaal/ Doug Liman remake of Road House seems destined for a streaming premiere. The news comes courtesy of Variety and was buried in a piece they wrote about the severing of producer Joel Silver’s relationship with Amazon Studios. According to the report, one of the reasons Silver was fired was due to rather heated discussions with people working for the studios over the films he was involved in, which were apparently bad enough to be considered verbal abuse. One of the things Silver was allegedly most upset over was the fact that Amazon is reportedly planning to release Road House straight-to-streaming through their Amazon MGM banner. This is despite the film being the highest testing film in director Doug Liman’s career, which is saying something as he also directed The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers, Go, and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Johnson directed BlackBerry, which scored strong reviews after its world premiere over the winter at the Berlin Film Festival. IFC Films released it in theaters in May.
The script centers on Mike Lazaridis (Baruchel) and Jim Balsillie (Howerton), who founded the Canadian company Research in Motion company to create and market the phone, among the first to have a keyboard and internet access. One of the most acclaimed movies of the year is being turned into a miniseries by AMC. For better or worse, "BlackBerry," which was released in theaters back in May, is going to be repurposed as a three-episode TV show that will air on the cable network next month across three nights. It will also be streaming on AMC+. While this opens the movie up to a larger audience, it's going to be presented in a way that was not originally intended, making this something of a bittersweet situation. More on that in a second. For now, let's get into the specifics.
Billed as a "special television event," the miniseries version of director Matt Johnson's "BlackBerry" includes 16 minutes of new footage. It will air in three parts on November 13, 14, and 15 on AMC, with all three episodes available on AMC+ on November 13. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks,...

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Editors note: This review was originally published February 17, 2023 after the film’s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. It releases in theaters Friday.
Who knew a Canadian biopic of an infamous smartphone could be this entertaining, even poignant and moving? I am here to tell you today’s world premiere Berlin Film Festival competition entry BlackBerry is all that and more.
In the hands of co-writer (with Matthew Miller), director and co-star Matt Johnson (The Dirties), this long and winding tale of the rise and fall of the BlackBerry, the revolutionary device that first combined a computer with a phone all in one, is at once wonderfully funny, suspenseful and ultimately tragic. Here is a business story that has it all, and has much in common with other movies that focus on iconic tales of new-age businesses like The Social Network, Moneyball and The Big Short. Those movies had...

Hmmm, I wonder if this new release completes a “movie hat trick”? Now, that’s because it’s the third film this year to center around the creation of a popular product from the not-too-distant past. First out of the gate was the surprisingly effective Tetris, the tale of the popular computer/video game, from AppleTV+. It was soon topped by Amazon’s Air, the all-star story of Nike’s pursuit of rookie NBA phenom Michael Jordan and the best-selling shoe baring his name. Jump ahead to now (and 12 years in the movie timeline) and IFC brings us a “docu-dramedy” all about a communications device that became the hot “it” gizmo, but is now almost a blip in the “hand-held” history. And rather than being referred to by a litany of letters and numbers, this combo of soft and hardware went by the fruit-based moniker of Blackberry.

Plot: The rise and fall of BlackBerry through the eyes of its founder and creator Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and co-ceo Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton) as they go from being upstarts to dominating the smartphone market, and eventually, getting rendered obsolete by the rise of iPhone.
Review: Does anyone remember the term “crackberry?” That was a popular nickname for the BlackBerry when it first hit the market around 1999, as it was the first cell phone that allowed for effective emailing via your mobile device. It had its own dedicated server that meant people, for the first time, could send and receive emails from their phones – quickly. Soon they added web browsing, cameras and more, all of which seemed like science fiction when the company started pitching the product in the mid-nineties. For a long time, they were the great Canadian success story, with them based in Waterloo, Ontario, only for...

Chicago – As technology goes, it seems so long ago, but at its peak the first multi-use smartphone was nicknamed the “CrackBerry” because of user addiction. The product’s improbable rise and fall is told in the new film “BlackBerry,” co-written/directed and featuring Matt Johnson.
it’s 1996, and Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and his business partner and best friend Douglas Fregin (Johnson) are on the edge of creating the world’s first smartphone. Clock is a film directed by Alexis Jacknow starring Dianna Agron.
Clock is an elegant horror film that, narrated at a leisurely pace, manages to engage the viewer above all thanks to a brilliant performance by Dianna Agron, who knows how to seize the opportunity of a juicy role in a horror film.
And that’s not something usual.
Movie Review
Subtle and very well-paced, directed, and acted. It tells exactly what it wants and in the best possible way and Alexis Jacknow shines more in the direction than in the script, in a short story that, in a way, gives us the vibes of a short film with higher pretensions.
Clock performs very well in its visual aspect and set design. Very appreciable in terms of coloring, and regarding many of the designs of the fertility clinic and the appropriate use of contrasts.

Deciding when is the right time to conceive a child is a huge decision for anyone, let alone the career-minded woman at the center of “Clock.” Writer-director Alexis Jacknow amps up the anxiety by blending science and religion into paranoia-soaked mayhem, conjuring resonant emotion and haunting menace in this psychological horror film about an unconventional route to reproduction. Like a taut, “Rosemary’s Baby”-inspired “Black Mirror” episode, the film’s defiant sentiment that society should stop pressuring women to procreate is bold, brutal and bloodier than a pregnant woman’s bloody show.

Hulu’s Clock shakes up familiar ground in the fertile subgenre of pregnancy horror by examining the ticking biological clock through a woman uninterested in giving birth. Perhaps even scared of it. Writer/Director Alexis Jacknow’s feature debut mines psychological horror from the concept as it explores the pitfalls of baby fever. Despite the fascinating intersection of societal pressures and personal guilt, Clock struggles to decide on its horror approach.
Ella Patel (Dianna Agron) enjoys a child-free life with her husband, Aiden (Jay Ali). Plot: Clock is the story of a woman who enrolls in a clinical trial to try and fix her seemingly broken biological clock after friends, family, and society pressures her to have children.
Review: Some of the best horror movies are films about something other than the surface scares that draw in audiences. George Romero’s Living Dead movies were about racism, consumerism, and flesh-eating zombies. It Follows is about sexually transmitted diseases, while The Babadook is about the trauma of being a single parent. Alexis Jacknow’s film Clock, inspired by her Hulu short film of the same name, is a story about the pressures put on women to be mothers and the stress of living up to expectations. Sure, it features some chilling imagery and some jumpscares, but the underlying messages within the film are the truly frightening part and render the surface horror a little underwhelming.

Imagine if sociopathic maniac Dennis from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” was the CEO of a tech company, and also was bald. That’s a piece of the (excellent) premise of “BlackBerry,” a comedy about the rise and fall of the world’s first smartphone. The film got its first trailer today.
“BlackBerry” is a stranger-than-fiction tech industry schadenfreude comedy in the vein of “The Dropout” and “Super Pumped.” It stars Jay Baruchel in a gray wig as Mike Lazaridis, co-founder of Research in Motion, the company that developed BlackBerry’s technology, and the aforementioned bald Glenn Howerton as Jim Balsillie, Lazaridis’ co-ceo who oversaw the business side of things. The cast also Cary Elwes, Saul Rubinek, Michael Ironside, Rich Sommer (who in the trailer delivers the line “They call them CrackBerries” in the exact way his “Mad Men” character Harry Crane would say it if he was in business...

Once upon a time, in ye olde 1996, people didn't really take their phones everywhere with them. In fact, if you had a cellular phone, it was a massive brick without a screen, more like a glorified walkie-talkie than a real phone. There was a cellular network in place, but technology for the phones just wasn't totally there yet. Then along came Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, who developed the first smartphone, the BlackBerry, and forever changed how we communicate. The story behind the BlackBerry is just as interesting and full of colorful characters as "The Social Network" and that film's take on Facebook and creator Mark Zuckerberg, and now audiences will finally get a chance to know that tale.
"BlackBerry," starring Jay Baruchel as the tech-oriented and more sheepish Lazaridis and Glenn Howerton as cutthroat businessman Balsillie, will tell the story with comedic flair, based on Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff...

It’s through a rabbi (Saul Rubinek) from the neighborhood that Harry learns the whole story about his mother’s absence from his life. Though Harry’s initially confused as to why the rabbit keeps talking about her like a perfect specimen when, for him, she abandoned him and didn’t fight for him when she and his dad split up, there’s more he doesn’t know until the end of the episode. The entrance and exit of the BlackBerry smartphone is truly an all-thumbs tale – that of a beloved keyboard on a game-changing wireless device, and a Canadian company (Research in Motion) not terribly dexterous with innovation after the market pie went from “CrackBerry”-flavored to Apple-forward.
Equal parts high-tension business saga and nerd comedy, Matt Johnson’s feature “BlackBerry” – adapted with co-writer Matthew Miller from a book about the phone’s meteoric life (“Losing the Signal”) — parses the origins of the device’s success and the seeds of its downfall. Naturally, the story is bracketed by scrappy sorcery on one end and Steve Jobs’ competition-destroying genius on the other, but at its heart is the strange-bedfellows relationship between soft-spoken engineer Mike Laziridis (a silver-haired Jay Baruchel) and his shrewd, take-no-prisoners co-ceo Jim Balsillie.
The result, at a well-paced but unnecessarily long two hours, is a seriocomic cautionary tale of butting personalities in a fast-changing world,...

The independent film business is again showing signs of rude health as the global film industry struggles to recover post-pandemic. Sundance is often taken as the pace-setter, and distribution deals were plentiful this year, with seven- and eight-figure sales for the likes of Theater Camp (to Searchlight for an estimated 8 million), Flora and Son (Apple TV+, 20 million) and Fair Play (Netflix, 20 million), just the biggest of around a dozen 2023 Park City pickups. But Berlin’s European Film Market will be the industry’s true acid test.
“Sundance is more U.S.-focused in general,” says Alice Laffillé, vp sales at FilmNation, which did the Apple TV+ deal for Flora and Son. “There are always some big, splashy deals with streamers and U.S. buyers like Neon, A24 or Magnolia. Berlin is the first real international market, where we see where things stand.”

Glenn Howerton is forever known as the psychopath, Dennis Reynolds, on FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. However, the actor is set to break out of the shadow of the five-star man. It was previously announced Howerton would be joining Jay Baruchel in BlackBerry, which is the story of the Canadian corporation that created the revolutionary precursor to smartphones. Matt Johnson of Operation Avalanche will be stepping in the director’s chair for this project. Entertainment Weekly has given us the first look at Howerton in all of his bald glory as the CEO, Jim Balsillie.
Howerton describes his character as “a very savvy businessman who jumped into this venture when it was really just a bunch of tech guys who had no idea what they had on their hands. Jim had the relationships; he had the contacts, he had the personality and the drive to really push it forward.

Trekkies may be uncomfortable with words like "hero" and "villain" when it comes to discussions of their beloved media franchise. "Star Trek," when it's operating at peak efficiency, endeavors to present its characters -- protagonist and antagonist alike -- as complex, nuanced, and driven by principles, rather than merely "good" or "evil." In many of its stories, Trek often sees its characters solving problems either through negotiation or by scientific means. Sometimes that leads into morally gray areas, as when terrorists have legitimate grievances. It's not until one goes to "Star Trek" movies that notions of "heroism" and "villainy" are bandied about. Nero (Eric Bana) from the 2009 "Star Trek" film, for instance, isn't a nuanced character with a negotiable motivation. He's a cartoon monster hellbent on genocide. Nero, however, is an exception to the rule.

Blackberry is the long-awaited feature follow-up to Operation Avalanche by The Dirties director Matt Johnson. The film will make its world premiere at Berlin this month, but those stateside will get their first chance to see it at SXSW. We've got the full lineup below, collated from the two...

A very different, entertaining, funny, aesthetic and theatrical series that has a truly spectacular end of season in store for us. Not to be missed.

The new episode of our The Black Sheep video series doubles as a Christmas viewing recommendation, as we’re taking a look back at the 2005 horror comedy slasher Santa’s Slay (watch it Here) – which stars professional wrestler Bill Goldberg as a very unpleasant Santa Claus. To find out all about the movie and why we think it deserves to be seen by more genre fans, check out the video embedded above!
Written and directed by David Steiman, Santa’s Slay has the following synopsis: It turns out that Santa Claus is not really the sweet old fellow that we all know and love. In fact, he’s a devil and the only thing that’s kept his bad side in check was a bet he lost with an angel. Exclusive: Matt Brodlie and Jonathan Kier’s Upgrade Productions has boarded world sales rights to Shoah feature Shttl, which played at the London and Rome Film Festivals (where it won the audience award) this fall.
The film was previously with Bron Releasing but is no longer on the slate after Bron needed to streamline its film business.
Black and white drama Shttl follows the inhabitants of a Yiddish Ukrainian village on the eve of the Nazi invasion, known as Operation Barberossa.
Shot in Ukraine last year (with an almost entirely Ukrainian crew), the production fully reconstructed a traditional shtetl (or village) outside of Kiev to recreate life prior to the Nazi onslaught (as few traces of that life now remain), but it was subsequently destroyed by the Russian invasion earlier this year. Following the filming in 2021, the set (which included a synagogue which had been blessed and consecrated) had been...
