Universal Soldier: The Return (1999) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
In 1992, the now acclaimed director Roland Emmerich, alongside action superstars Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, created Universal Soldier. A movie that was maybe under-appreciated in the golden age of action films but nonetheless a highlight in all of their careers. Regardless, financial issues loomed for the studio that created it. This resulted in rights being sold and two mostly horrendous television movies being released on Showtime starring Gary Busey and Burt Reynolds. Seven years later, in 1999, the franchise would attempt its big screen comeback with the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme desperate for a career win on a project no director seemed willing to touch. Would the result be a resurrection of not only the franchise but its leading man’s once unstoppable career? Or one of the final nails in the coffin of both of their big screen futures? This is What Happened to Universal Soldier: The Return.

Madonna Offered $20 Million to Get Her Pregnant: NBA Star Dennis Rodman
Image
Hollywood is a weird place. Seriously weird stuff happens here, and somehow, the story of Dennis Rodman and Madonna isn’t even the strangest thing to come out of it.

Well, first, their relationship, while lasting only a few months, brought together two of the most unconventional and headline-grabbing figures of the era. Madonna was at the height of her global influence. While Rodman, known for his intense rebounding on the court and flashy persona off of it, was just as much a media magnet.

What has kept this story alive, however, is not just the celebrity of those involved, but what came after. In the years since, Rodman has been candid about the nature of their relationship, at one point claiming that Madonna offered him $20 million to impregnate her. Whether fact or simply a rumor, this has most definitely piqued people’s interest!

Did Madonna really offer Dennis Rodman...

What Netflix’s ‘The Last Dance’ Didn’t Show You About Michael Jordan’s Legacy
Image
Some legends are too large to fit in a single frame. We scribbled it after binge-watching Netflix’s The Last Dance in 2020, our hearts pounding from the adrenaline of Michael Jordan’s fadeaways and the nostalgia of a Bulls era we never lived through.

Netflix’s 10-part opus, directed by Jason Hehir, is a dazzling chronicle of Jordan’s 1997–98 Bulls swan song, but it probably has more holes than a sieve when it comes to the full scoop on His Airness. From Jordan’s iron grip on the narrative via his Jump 23 production company to the sidelined voices of teammates, the series cherry-picks its truths.

To borrow a proverb, “A half-told tale is a shadow dressed as light.” Let’s dive into what got left on the cutting room floor.

Jonathan Majors on the Letter He Sent Marvel After Being Fired, the Conviction That Derailed His Career and Playing a Toxic Man in ‘Magazine Dreams’
Image
The last time Jonathan Majors sat down for rounds of interviews at a press junket, it was late February 2023. He was the fastest-rising star in Hollywood, with his big-screen Marvel debut as Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” released just ahead of Michael B. Jordan’s boxing blockbuster “Creed III.”

But a month after reaching that pinnacle, Majors was arrested following a fight with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Then, in a highly publicized criminal trial, Majors was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault. As a result, the actor’s career imploded. Marvel fired him, scrapping his character’s multi-picture arc, and several other film projects (including a Dennis Rodman biopic and a movie with Spike Lee) fell apart. “Magazine Dreams,” a searing look at a dangerously unbalanced bodybuilder that had generated awards buzz for Majors after screening in Sundance, was dropped by its distributor,...

‘Borderline’ Review – A Grating Horror-Comedy Riff on the Madonna Stalker Case
Image
In 1996, a violent man was convicted and sentenced to ten years for stalking and threatening the life of pop legend Madonna, with the man reportedly telling her bodyguard that he intended to slit her throat if she didn’t marry him. That man would later escape the mental hospital but was quickly apprehended again before any further harm was caused.

Writer Jimmy Warden, making his feature directorial debut, uses this as the foundation for Borderline, applying the same based-on-a-true-story comedy-horror formula from his Cocaine Bear screenplay that generated a box office hit. Despite two talented leads, the loose, fictionalized remix of this true account struggles to strike a coherent balance between comedy and horror, landing instead on a repellent, vapid anti-love letter to ’90s Los Angeles.

Samara Weaving plays Madonna in all but name. Borderline, derived from Madonna’s 1984 hit song, centers on mega pop star Sofia as she’s...

Borderline Review – Samara Weaving’s Darkly Comic Thriller is a Scattered Misfire
Image
Borderline marks Jimmy Warden’s directorial debut, teaming up with his wife Samara Weaving for the second time after The Babysitter: Killer Queen; Warden wrote and Weaving returned to the sequel in a smaller supporting role.

With an additional writing credit for Cocaine Bear for Warden, and Weaving’s status as a modern scream queen, a dark comedy thriller like Borderline seems like a match made in heaven. And while it has its moments, the ideas and characters never fully come together.

Samara Weaving in Borderline (2025)/Magnet Releasing Borderline plot

Set in 1990s Los Angeles, Duerson (Ray Nicholson) is a delusional, obsessed fan and stalker of pop star Sofia (Samara Weaving). Duerson believes the two are soulmates, and breaks into her house for what he intends to be their wedding night. Sofia, along with her (kind of?) boyfriend DeVante and bodyguard Bell (Eric Dane), must fight for their lives before...

Why Young Shawn Was Recast in Psych, Explained
Image
Psych, the police procedural with a comedic twist, is an iconic part of the mystery genre. The series’ creative approach to writing detective stories has charmed generations of fans. The show follows the exploits of Shawn Spencer, a brilliant investigator who uses a ruse of psychic abilities to fulfill his childhood dreams of adventure. One of the most beloved elements of the series continues to be the flashbacks to Shawn’s childhood. Shawn’s childhood self, or Young Shawn, becomes an integral part of each episode’s plot. Most episodes begin with a flashback to Shawn’s childhood in the 1980s and reveal how Shawn developed his amazing abilities. The flashbacks were not only a way to incorporate '80s nostalgia into a series that prided itself on constant John Hughes references but also helped endear the audience to Shawn’s character.

Shawn’s personality in Psych can be painfully sophomoric at times,...

Fuji Television Network -- one of Japan’s largest broadcasters, and well-known for broadcasting hit anime shows such as the currently airing Dragon Ball Daima, One Piece, Honey Lemon Soda and more -- has been embroiled in a public scandal for months, and its effects continue to be felt. Now, after several high-profile companies have pulled their sponsorship, two of Fuji TV’s most celebrated anime are left without backing.

Via Unseen Japan, the world's longest-running animated television series, Sazae-san, has seen a substantial drop in sponsorship in response to Fuji TV’s sexual assault scandal and its continuing fallout. Although not widely known in the West, Sazae-san, which portrays an idealized Japanese family, is one of Japan's most cherished anime and is a cultural institution. At the end of an episode, a placard displaying the show's sponsors is shown, but on Jan.19, X user @arakawakohsen_B documented the show's waning support.

Jonathan Majors’ ‘Magazine Dreams’ Lands Spring 2025 Release Date
Image
Magazine Dreams has finally secured a release date, nearly two years after the Jonathan Majors-led bodybuilding movie was a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival.

Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s feature hits theaters March 21, 2025, from Briarcliff Entertainment. Starring Majors as amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, the film’s cast includes Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page and Harriet Sansom Harris.

After its buzzy Sundance launch in January 2023, Magazine Dreams was poised to help catapult Majors into the awards race. Searchlight acquired the title in a bidding war, but the company jettisoned it earlier this year after Majors was convicted of assault and harassment following an incident with ex-partner Grace Jabbari.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in October that the film had been picked up by Briarcliff. Serving as producers are Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman.

Following his conviction, Majors was dropped by Marvel as villain Kang...

How AFM Landed at the Former “Ultimate Party Hotel in the World”
Image
For the first time in 33 years, veteran buyers and sellers will be wandering a trade floor far from Santa Monica during the American Film Market. Nearly every year since 1991, the U.S. film industry’s leading content market has set up shop at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. The old digs weren’t exactly luxurious, but no one ever said the nitty-gritty world of indie film sales was the glamour-facing side of the movie business. The Loews met the industry’s needs, and for a frantic week every November, it was the place a generation of international dealmakers, distributors and Hollywood pretenders called home.

But the property changed ownership last year, forcing Amf organizers to hold the 2023 market at the nearby Le Meridian Delfina. That location disappointed many attendees due to its cramped layout, prompting AFM to reassess what venue would best serve its future. Organizers’ answer: To pack up and head to Vegas.

Magazine Dreams (2023)
Magazine Dreams, starring Jonathan Majors, will finally land in 2025
Magazine Dreams (2023)
Magazine Dreams was dropped by its original distributor following Jonathan Majors’ criminal conviction – but it’s now arriving in 2025.

All the way back in January we reported the rather sad fate of Magazine Dreams, an acclaimed bodybuilding drama that was being lauded as a potential awards magnet before Searchlight, the film’s distributor promptly dropped it.

Why? Because the film’s lead, Jonathan Majors, was accused of some rather despicable crimes and then found guilty of them. Majors also found himself losing some very plum roles. In the wake of Majors’ conviction, Magazine Dreams – which was already completed and picking up plenty of acclaim on the festival circuit – was first quietly shelved and then dropped by Searchlight.

Some speculated that the film would be picked up by another distributor, others were skeptical. The film is said to contain themes of ‘personal violence’ which could make for uncomfortable viewing given Majors’ real-life actions.

Jonathan Majors’ bodybuilding drama Magazine Dreams has found a path to theaters after being dropped by Searchlight in January following the star’s criminal conviction.

Briarcliff has picked up the project for distribution, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, and plans to release it in theaters in the first quarter of 2025. The Tom Ortenberg-run distributor has a history of acquiring controversial projects, and will release the Donald Trump feature The Apprentice later this month after no major Hollywood studio would touch it.

Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams bowed at Sundance in 2023 to rave reviews for Majors’ performance as amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, with the actor earning early awards buzz. Disney-owned Searchlight acquired the project after a bidding war, but ultimately dropped the movie after Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, stemming from an incident involving his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari.

Searchlight returned the film to producers and allowed them to shop it.

What a world we live in that a film starring a man recently convicted of assault and harassment is getting a release date before an animated project that was by all accounts really good and fun like Coyote Vs. Acme. Unlike the latter movie, Jonathan Majors' Magazine Dreams will actually see the light of day,...

Madonna’s Fiery Romp With Jenny Shimizu Made Her Feel Like a ‘High Class Hooker’ That Involved Impromptu Mating Calls
Image
Yes, Jenny Shimizu and Madonna actually happened! The 66-year-old pop star made it big during the 80s and 90s for her efforts in the music industry. She released some of the biggest albums in music starting with Like a Virgin (1984), followed by True Blue (1986), The Immaculate Collection (1990), and Like a Prayer (1989) which is probably her best release to date.

Putting aside all the fame and glamour that followed after she came into the limelight, Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone, was dubbed “Queen of Pop” by fans and critics worldwide, much like how one of her exes was called the “King of Pop”. That would’ve been the music industry’s biggest power couple.

But when it came to romance, Madonna was the perfect description of how to live young, wild, and free. While most of us are...

‘Vanderpump Rules’ Fans Slam Scheana Shay’s Husband’s Tragic Makeover
Image
Vanderpump Rules fans are slamming Scheana Shay’s husband, Brock Davies’ recent makeover. They think that he looks horrible and he is generally an attractive man. Brock was always known for his flowing locks and that changed which did not really affect his appearance. Yet, his latest stunt has everyone up in arms. Keep reading for more details.

Vpr Fans Slam Scheana Shay’s Husband’s Tragic Makeover

When Scheana Shay first introduced Brock Davies in 2020 at the Season 8 Vanderpump Rules reunion, he had long, luscious locks. It was very Jason Momoa and he would often rock a man bun and then, right before the Season 10 reunion, he chopped his hair off. The look was very styled and GQ so no one complained. He looked dapper and put together while Scheana experimented with her lighter side. She had blonde highlights in the past but had mostly stuck with dark locks.

‘Vice Is Broke’ Review: Eddie Huang’s Furious Doc Frames Vice Media as a Cautionary Tale About the Dangers of Selling Out
Image
Even at the height of its power, which was built (in part) on a series of sexual how-to guides and the second-hand credibility of an HBO documentary series, Vice wasn’t big on teaching people anything they didn’t already know. No, Vice was all about access. It was all about telling stories from the inside out, irrespective of journalistic ethics or integrity, in order to seduce the internet generation with the truth of a world too fluid and fucked up for the New York Times to understand.

That truth was typically facile and/or exaggerated, but the illusion of extreme reporting played to the strengths of a brand that had always profited from selling freaks to squares, and supercharging that brand with the strength of traditional media turned it into an empire once valued at six billion dollars. I mean, it’s not like CNN could have — or would...

10 Calvin and Hobbes Comics That Perfectly Capture Calvin's Anarchist Spirit
Image
Calvin and Hobbes shows life through the eyes of a child, and that child is an utter anarchist. Calvin doesn't recognize his school or his parents as authorities in his life, and actively does things to defy them. Calvin fantasizes about a lawless world, and the destruction of 'oppressive' institutions (like his elementary school), confirming his anarchist spirit.

Calvin and Hobbes allows readers to see the world through the eyes of a six-year-old boy named Calvin, as he goes on all sorts of fun adventures with his imaginary friend and stuffed animal tiger, Hobbes (though the nature of Hobbes existence is debatable). While a great number of these strips portray relatable moments of childhood wonder, the series as a whole is still focused on one child in particular, and perhaps more than anything else, Calvin is a troublemaker.

Calvin is smart, imaginative, and fiercely loyal to his friends, but hes...

Trinity Rodman’s spectacular debut goal highlighted the U.S. women’s national team’s commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia in their Olympic opener Thursday night.

Rodman, the daughter of basketball star Dennis Rodman, made her first Olympic appearance, showcasing her skill with a remarkable spin move in the 17th minute, leaving defender Martha Tembo off-balance before calmly slotting the ball past Zambian goalkeeper Ngambo Musole.

“It was purely instinctual,” Rodman said of her move, which she dubbed the “Trin Spin.” “I knew taking a touch forward would have pushed me out of scoring position, so I tried to throw her off balance. It worked perfectly.”
