Her song, "Angel", kept rapper "DMC" (aka Darryl McDaniels) alive while dealing with the discovery of his adoption. He heard it on the radio and immediately felt the pull of the music. It gave him hope and gave him the strength to make it through that dark time in his life. As a result, he asked her to collaborate with him on his solo song "Just Like Me". During one recording session, she revealed she too had been adopted.

The first instrument she learned to play was the ukulele.

Born in Halifax but claims Vancouver as her home.

Has been playing instruments, including the piano and guitars, since the age of 5. Started Lilith Fair, the first all female performer concert tour. It lasted 3 summers from 1997 to 1999 and toured North America. Was the first artist signed to Nettwerk recording label. She was 17 at the time.

Her husband, Ashwin Sood, has played drums for her since 1991.

She was awarded the OC (Officer of the Order of Canada) on October 21, 1999 and Invested on: April 26, 2000 from the Canadian Governor General. She lives in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her unique voice and melodies have attracted music lovers across North America and around the world. A successful recording artist, she is also the founder of the Lilith Fair Concert Series which was the first all-women concert tour. Lilith Fair provided a forum for female performers to share audiences, collaborate musically and raise contemporary issues affecting all generations.

Her hit song "Angel" (1998) was inspired by the untimely death of The Smashing Pumpkins' keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin from a heroin overdose in 1996.
