Love was clearly in the air during ABC’s The Golden Wedding live televised special as Bachelor Nation standouts Brayden Bowers and Christina Mandrell got engaged in the lead-up to Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s nuptials.
Bowers, who competed for Charity Lawson’s affections during The Bachelorette season 20 before failing to find lasting romance throughout the latest run of Bachelor in Paradise, proposed live to Mandrell, who appeared on Zach Shallcross’ season 27 of The Bachelor. The pair had just discussed with franchise host Jesse Palmer that they were about to move in together in Nashville after Mandrell reached out to Bowers via Instagram following his return from filming Bachelor in Paradise. But Bowers had something else to get off his chest.

Marty Krofft, the savvy businessman who partnered with his older brother Sid to amass an entertainment empire fueled by such mind-blowing kids TV shows as The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost, died Saturday. He was 86.
Eight years younger than Sid, Marty Krofft died Saturday in Los Angeles of kidney failure, his family announced.
“There’s nobody better on this planet,” Sid said of his brother in a 2000 interview for the Archive of American Television website. “I get a dream, and Marty gets it done.”
The pair already were well-known theatrical puppeteers when they were recruited in 1968 to design the costumes for the live-action portion of NBC’s The Banana Splits Adventure Hour.

The Academy of Country Music Awards announced their 58th annual nominations on April 13 in advance of the May 11 show, and this year they cited seven artists for Entertainer of the Year. That includes two women: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, the only two women who have been nominated for the last eight years. Lambert surprised us by winning the award in 2022 (it was her first win on her sixth try). Can she do it again? Make your predictions here in our predictions center.
SEE2023 ACM nominations list: Hardy and Lainey Wilson lead Academy of Country Music Awards nominees
The odds usually aren’t in women’s favor at the ACM Awards. The organization has given out Entertainer of the Year 52 times to date. Only 12 times has the winner been a woman. Lambert prevailed in 2022. She’s joined on that short list by Loretta Lynn (1975), Dolly Parton (1978), Barbara Mandrell (1981), Reba McEntire (1995), Shania Twain (2000), The Chicks (2001), Underwood,...

Early in Zach Shallcross’ season of The Bachelor, it looked as if Christina Mandrell was a frontrunner.
The contestant, who is the niece of country singer Barbara Mandrell, was awarded the first one-on-one date with Shallcross. The day included meeting his entire family at his mother’s birthday party.
During the evening portion, Mandrell opened up to the Bachelor about being a single mom to her 5-year-old daughter Blakely. He gave her the date rose and they looked very happy together.
Things went downhill from there when co-star Brianna Thorbourne accused Mandrell of bad behavior and painted her as the villain of the season.
The single mom tried to explain herself to Shallcross, but he eliminated her at the following rose ceremony anyway.
Now fans are saying that Mandrell may be chosen as the next Bachelorette.

But, standing backstage at this week’s live broadcast of the memorial concert and tribute for her grandmother, she establishes exactly what “Mee-maw’s” path and ultimate destination were. “She saw herself as just a coal miners’ daughter, and she was just relaying her story,” Emmy says. “and then she became a queen for being ordinary.”

The show, about a dysfunctional family of wealthy televangelists, uses original and licensed music to make everything feel real despite being an over-the-top satire, and set a particularly high bar in Season 1 with “Misbehavin,'” a hilarious take on early 60’s country music that arguably serves as they show’s unofficial leitmotif.
But Season 2 surpassed that achievement twice, first with the original song “Sassy on Sunday,” and in the season finale with an absolutely incredible cover of country legend Don Williams’ 1977 song “Some Broken Hearts Never End.”
That’s thanks in large part to Joseph Stephens, the show’s songwriter and composer. Following the end of Season 2, we were lucky enough to talk to him, and he walked us through the creation of these classic moments, explaining just how much...

The 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on February 10, and every category has at least one female nominee. That includes Entertainer of the Year, where the academy recognized zero women last year but this year nominated Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood alongside Eric Church, Luke Combs, and Chris Stapleton. But the academy has a long way to go if it wants to achieve gender parity.
SEE2021 ACM Awards nominations list: Chris Stapleton and Maren Morris lead Academy of Country Music kudos with 6 bids
The ACM Awards have given out Entertainer of the Year 51 times to date. Only 11 times has the winner been a woman. Underwood prevailed three times; she won in 2009 and 2010 in addition to her most recent victory in 2020. She’s joined on that short list by Loretta Lynn (1975), Dolly Parton (1978), Barbara Mandrell (1981), Reba McEntire (1995), Shania Twain (2000), The Chicks (2001) and Taylor Swift (2011-2012).

Ralph Emery, a radio and TV host who became as famous in the country world as most of the stars he interviewed over the decades, died Saturday at Tristar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. He was 88. No immediate cause of death was given.
Emery’s renown as, alternately, “the Dick Clark of country music” or “the Johnny Carson of country” was significant enough to earn him a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007, in addition to the more expected plaudits befitting a top broadcaster in the industry, like his membership in the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame, an honor that came in 1989.

Luke Bryan has been tapped to host the 2021 CMA Awards set for Wednesday, November 10 on ABC. It will be Bryan’s CMA Awards hosting debut. The two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year will be the show’s sole co-host after nearly two decades of co-hosts, following Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood’s 11-year run, from 2008 to 2018, Underwood and Reba McEntire in 2019, and last year’s hosting duo of McEntire and Darius Rucker.
“The CMA Awards is one of the biggest nights of the year for Country Music,” says Bryan. “Being asked to host the CMA Awards was definitely something I put a lot of thought into before answering. The pressure that comes along with that can be overwhelming, but knowing I get to help honor and celebrate so many of my friends, I knew it was something I couldn’t turn down. Less than a month away from its airdate, CMA Awards producers have put an end to the speculation among country fans about who would host the 2021 show by announcing Luke Bryan would take over duties for the show, to be broadcast live Nov. 10 on ABC.
This marks the third year in a row that the network and the Country Music Association have changed up the hosting approach, after Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood had an 11-year run, from 2008 to 2018. Two years ago, Underwood returned to co-host with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, and last year McEntire came back to share the stage with Darius Rucker. Earlier this month. McEntire told Billboard she was not coming back “to my knowledge.”

Female artists are so commonly underrepresented for Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards that I addressed the disparity last year, the year before that, the year before that, and the year before that. When the 2021 nominations were announced two women made the cut in that coveted category: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, the same two as last year. That ties 2020’s mark as the best female representation in the past decade, but that’s not saying much. Women still hold less than half of the category, and it has been fully 10 years since any woman has won the award.
Underwood has never prevailed in this race despite being one of the most successful crossover stars of the 21st century. In fact, her only other nominations for Entertainer of the Year were in 2016, 2019, and 2020. Lambert has been nominated a bit more often: this is her fifth citation...

The 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on February 26, and the academy was quick to point out that all the nominees for Single of the Year are by women. So I guess we should pay no attention to the fact that female representation in Entertainer of the Year actually went down: from one nominee in 2020 back down to zero. This year’s contenders are Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Rhett again, and Chris Stapleton.

When most major stars with a music career retire, proper announcements are in order, if not farewell tours or tribute shows. But when Kris Kristofferson made the decision to retire last year, there were no such fireworks set off, and the public didn’t learn about it until it was tucked deep into a press release Wednesday about a management change, as if everyone already long since knew or assumed it. That may speak to Kristofferson’s unassuming nature: He really didn’t think that his withdrawal from public performance and recordings was the stuff of headlines.
“It wasn’t any big stake in the ground, like ‘I’m retiring! I’m not doing this anymore!,” says Tamara Saviano, Kristofferson’s longtime manager. “It was an evolution, and it just felt very organic. There was no big change — it was this sort of slow ‘What should we do now? What’s next?...

Mac Davis, the singer-songwriter who parlayed pop and country hits into a network TV variety show and acting career, has died. He was 78.
His manager of nearly four decades, Jim Morey, announced Davis’ death on Facebook Tuesday night. “He was a music legend but his most important work was that as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend,” Morey wrote. “I will miss laughing about our many adventures on the road and his insightful sense of humor.” The Country Music Association later confirmed the news.
Country superstar Kenny Chesney offered his tribute to Davis, saying, “I met Mac as a young artist just starting out on my journey, when he was already a legend and a songwriting hero to me. He welcomed me into his home, and turned that tremendous creative light on me. Even though he’d written ‘In The Ghetto’ for Elvis and had so many incredible hits of his own,...

Roy Head, the rocker known for his 1965 smash “Treat Her Right,” died Monday at his home in Porter, Texas, family members reported. He was 79.
“Treat Her Right” reached No. 2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&b chart in 1965; the rave-up was kept out of the top pop spot only by the Beatles’ “Yesterday.” The song was repopularized last year by Quentin Tarantino’s use of it for the credit sequence music in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” It was also featured in the 1991 film “The Commitments.”
Wood found renewed renown as the father of Sundance Head, the winner of season 11 of “The Voice.” The younger Head sang “Treat Her Right” as a duet with his coach, Blake Shelton, on an episode of the show in 2016.
Billy Gibbons of Zz Top paid tribute to Head as a “rock ’n’ soul phenomenon who had been one of our early and continuing inspirations.

The 55th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will be presented on Wednesday, September 16, during a ceremony on CBS hosted by reigning Entertainer of the Year champ Keith Urban. These awards have been up in the air for a while now; originally planned for April 5 in Las Vegas, the telecast had to be delayed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. But the show must go on, even if a few months later than usual. So which singers are performing at the long-awaited event? Click above to see the complete list of artists, which we’ll be updating as they’re announced.
The awards will no longer be doled out in Vegas. Instead, the show will broadcast from three venues in Nashville, Tennessee: the Grand Ole Opry House, Ryman Auditorium, and the Bluebird Cafe. Among this year’s top nominees are Thomas Rhett, Old Dominion and Maren Morris with five bids apiece.

The Academy of Country Music Awards are filling in the few missing pieces in a show next week that’s already heavy with previously announced performances, adding numbers by Carrie Underwood and the on-and-offstage duo of Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.
Last year, in her final year as co-host of the CMAs, the other big country awards show, Underwood took part in an all-star opening salute to the great women of country. She’ll pay homage to the female trailblazers of the genre again this year at the ACMs — but handle the medley on her own this time. Her performance, which is being billed as in honor of the 95th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry, will consist of classic songs associated with Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride and Barbara Mandrell.
Shelton and Stefani will sing their recent collaboration “Happy Anywhere,” released in July as a followup to their No.

Women are routinely underrepresented for Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards, so much so that I also addressed this disparity last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. This year turned out to be better … a little. There are two women nominated for the top prize: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. But that’s still less than half of the category, and it has been a full decade since the last time there were even that many women in contention.
Underwood has never won the award, and despite being one of the biggest crossover stars of the 21st century, her only other bids in the top category were in 2016 and 2019. Lambert has been nominated a bit more often: this is her fourth after contending in 2010, 2014 and 2015. But she hasn’t won the award yet either.

The Academy of Country Music Awards were first held in 1966, but they didn’t institute their top award for Entertainer of the Year until 1971 when Merle Haggard claimed the top prize against a legendary lineup of nominees that also included Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Elvis Presley and Charley Pride. The biggest winner of all time is Garth Brooks, who has claimed top honors six times, all of which came when he was at his most dominant in the country music industry in the 1990s. He took home the award from 1991 to 1994, and then in 1998 and 1999. Following close behind with five wins are the band Alabama, who prevailed five years in a row from 1982 to 1986. So even though Brooks ultimately won more times overall, Alabama still holds the record for the most consecutive victories.

There is a woman nominated in every major category they were eligible in at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards, so women have shattered country music’s glass ceiling once and for all, right? It was a night celebrating women, until all of a sudden it wasn’t. Garth Brooks won Entertainer of the Year for the third time in four years and for the seventh time in his career at the 2019 Country Music Association Awards, defeating Carrie Underwood, who has still never won that award and has only ever been nominated twice despite being one of country music’s biggest stars of the 21st century. Mandrell and Swift are the only women to have won twice. The Dixie Chicks and Swift are the only female winners so far in the 21st century. And yes, Brooks now has one Entertainer of...

It’s a tale as old as time: Maren Morris leads the 2019 Country Music Association Awards with six nominations, but she’s not up for Entertainer of the Year. That’s not surprising, though. These days being a man is practically a prerequisite for winning that award. Women are so drastically underrepresented in that category that I also addressed this disparity last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.
There is one woman nominated for the top prize this year: Carrie Underwood. She has never won the award, and despite being one of the biggest crossover country stars of the 21st century, her only other nomination in the top category was in 2016. This year she’s nominated against four solo male artists: six-time winner Garth Brooks, two-time winner Keith Urban, four-time nominee Chris Stapleton and three-time nominee Eric Church.

From the Forties through the mid-Seventies Nashville was staking its claim as Music City, developing the hybrid of country and pop known as the Nashville Sound. At the same time, on the West Coast, the thriving California honky-tonks gave birth to what would be termed the Bakersfield Sound, so named for the town in the southern San Joaquin Valley that would gift country music with two of its most iconic artists: Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. On August 9th, the music that melded honky-tonk twang with rock & roll instrumentation will...

In 1980, two of the biggest country-to-pop crossover acts, Ronnie Milsap and Dolly Parton, recorded for Nashville’s RCA label. Both had major hits that year — Parton with the Donna Summer-penned “Starting Over Again,” and the movie smash “9 to 5,” and Milsap with the Number One singles “My Heart,” “Cowboys and Clowns” and the poignant “Smoky Mountain Rain.” The two Hall of Fame legends come together for a moving update on “Smoky Mountain Rain,” accompanied by an animated video that captures one dream fading while another is just beginning.
