Over the past 40-plus years, no figure in American documentary has been more important than Sheila Nevins. She has produced or executive produced hundreds of documentaries for HBO and more recently for MTV Documentary Films. And she’s won 32 Emmys, more than any single person.
But there’s one credit that hasn’t been attached to her name, until now: director. At the age of 84, Nevins has added that title to her long list of accomplishments with The ABCs of Book Banning, an Oscar-contending short documentary about increasingly aggressive efforts by conservatives to keep certain published works out of the hands of schoolchildren.
Nevins joins the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss her directorial debut, which she explains was inspired by seeing a viral video of a 100-year-old woman taking on the Martin County School Board in Florida. Grace Linn, who has since turned 101, denounced board...

Say what you want about celebrity worship, but actors loom large in the popular imagination. Millions of people around the world suspend their disbelief to follow a story and invest in its characters, and some of this investment may go toward the actors themselves. Many of us like, respect, or find some common ground with specific performers. Our connections with them vary — background, talent, personality — but a consistent one is generation. So it is lamentable when we hear of an actor aging or even dying. Why? Because it means another part of our culture and zeitgeist is fading away.
We're just over halfway through 2023, and while we haven't seen a repeat of 2016 with its flurry of celebrity deaths, numerous actors from the screen and stage are passing on. Here are the actors who have died in 2023, so far.

HBO Max is going beneath the sheets for a new drama based on the life and times of Heidi Fleiss, the infamous and former ‘Hollywood Madam’ who ran a prostitution ring with a high-profile clientele. Maggie Cohn (The Staircase) is writing and executive producing the Heidi Fleiss drama for HBO Max, with Fleiss consulting.
As you may recall, Fleiss was arrested in 1993 on a series of prostitution charges. The media transformed Fleiss’ trial into a circus, splashing the proceedings across television and tabloid rags. Fleiss never revealed her client list, though many celebrities are suspected or confirmed to have used her services. Charlie Sheen once testified to using Fleiss’ service on multiple occasions.
Fleiss was convicted in state court, but the terms didn’t stick on account of the case being overturned after an appeals court ruled jurors had swapped votes to avoid a deadlock verdict. Fleiss was later convicted...

Fleiss was arrested on a number of prostitution charges in 1993, and her trial on the charges was a media sensation. The late Tom Sizemore was one of the great character actors of the 1990s. His spectacular run during this decade begins with Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers," an ultra-violent media satire with frenzied editing and a polarized reputation. The film's leads are Mickey Knox (Woody Harrelson) and his bride Mallory (Juliette Lewis). To quote "Bonnie and Clyde" — "They're young, they're in love, and they kill people."
As the Knoxes carve carnage across America, hot on their trail is Detective Jack Scagnetti. In another movie, a man like Scagnetti would be the hero — but not here. The detective is obsessed with spree killers because his mother was killed by Charles Whitman, "The Texas Tower Sniper." However, Scagnetti is not just out to catch killers, but to emulate them. In one scene, he strangles a young prostitute.

Before Chris Evans grabbed a star-spangled shield and donned the mantle of Captain America, and even before the late, great, B-movie maestro Albert Pyun directed the straight-to-video 1990 "Captain America" movie, there was Universal's failed "Captain America" feature-length television film, which aired in 1979. Now a footnote in the history of superhero cinema, director Rod Holcomb's "Captain America" fits neatly next to the studio's 1978 "Dr. Strange" adaptation as similar attempts at seeing how Marvel's comic book characters could (extremely loosely) translate to low-budget, live-action TV material. Unfortunately for Holcomb, the project was a bit of an embarrassment.
Holcomb had already directed three episodes of Universal Television's "The Six Million Dollar Man" before taking on the task of adapting "Captain America," but the director was frightened that the production ended his career before it barely even began. The film starred Reb Brown, also known in B-movie circles from "Yor, the Hunter from the Future,...

Showtime got a little bit lucky with The Man Who Fell to Earth. The sci-fi drama took a title that means very little to modern audiences and a story that didn’t really require extending into a new era, but creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman had a specific and contemporary tale they wanted to tell — and, in Chiwetel Ejiofor, a fully committed leading man giving a wild, hilarious, soulful central performance.
Perhaps owing to the arbitrary attempt to build around the title of a 1976 film (and a 1963 novel), The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn’t appear to have generated any buzz at all and Ejiofor didn’t even crack the outer edge of the Emmy conversation.

It was 19 years ago that Nick Broomfield, that spiky and compelling one-man band of documentary filmmakers, released “Biggie & Tupac” (2002), his chilling, no-frills, down-the-mean-streets-of-Compton investigative look into the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
The movie arrived at a moment when Broomfield had begun to style himself as a kind of high-end tabloid detective, plumbing the mysteries behind such sensational stories as the rise of Heidi Fleiss (“Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam”), the suicide of Kurt Cobain (“Kurt & Courtney”), and the life and death of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos (Broomfield made not one but two films about her). “Biggie & Tupac” didn’t present definitive evidence of anything, but it offered what was at the time a groundbreaking portrait of life at Death Row Records, the underworld music empire presided over by the gangsta entrepreneur Suge Knight. It was a movie that dove into key questions and pushed them further and further,...

On Wednesday night, NBC News reported that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who is currently awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy, was found injured and semi-conscious in his cell with two abrasions on his neck. While initial details were sketchy, sources at Metropolitan Correctional Center, the prison where Epstein was being held, suggested to NBC News that the injury was possibly the result of a failed suicide attempt, though investigators have not yet ruled out that another inmate may have assaulted him.

Two romances anchor Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love.” Both bloomed on the sparkling Greek island Hydra, many years apart. One was the great love and muse of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen’s life, Marianne Ihlen, the subject of at least five of his songs, including “So Long Marianne” and “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye.” The other was Broomfield’s own, more brief affair at age 20 with Ihlen, who was 12 years his senior.
Ihlen stayed friends with both men through the years. As she battled leukemia at the end of her life in 2016, her friend Jan Christian Mollestad reached out to Cohen to let him know she was near the end. Cohen wrote an email back that Mollestand reads to Ihlen on video in “Marianne & Leonard”:

The early ’90s were an interesting time for horror; theatrical distribution was wanting, and what films were made mostly found themselves victims of the direct-to-video route. I shouldn’t say victims; they were still made for those cruising the video store aisles in need of the latest adrenaline fix of terror. One film of the era that received extra attention was Skinner (1993), but not necessarily due to content; no, it turns out that director Ivan Nagy was at the time the boyfriend of the notorious Hollywood Madam, Heidi Fleiss. Had audiences paid closer attention to the film than the gossip rags, they would have been privy to a somewhat disjointed yet interesting flick. Thanks to Severin Films, everyone has a chance to see what all the fuss is about with another stellar Blu-ray release.

A former actress who claims Tom Sizemore groped her when she was 11 is reportedly suing the actor for $3 million.
The Utah woman filed a lawsuit on Monday claiming that the alleged incident occurred during production of the movie Born Killers in 2003 and caused her permanent damage, including post-traumatic stress and addiction to drugs and alcohol, according to multiple reports.
A spokesperson for the actor did not immediately return People’s request for comment, but when members of the crew and cast resurfaced the allegations last year, Sizemore called them “highly disturbing” and said he would never inappropriately touch a child.

There’s always been something irritatingly honest about Nick Broomfield’s documentaries, even when they’re not delivering what they’ve promised --- Margaret Thatcher, just for instance, who was never quite tracked down in “Tracking Down Maggie” back in 1994. But in his explorations of Extreme Americana -- exemplified by “Heidi Fleiss,” “Kurt & Courtney” and/or his two films on serial killer Aileen Wuornos -- he’s always an unabashedly goggle-eyed guest engaged in documentary tourism, who invades his own films, uses what he can get, glosses over what he can’t, but usually manages to peel a few scabs off the mottled surface of our national psyche, and psychoses. What the English director does in “Tales of the Grim Sleeper” is take a truism – that the Lapd’s relationship with the city’s minority communities historically sucks – and establish a story of lethal malpractice. When sometime-car-thief Lonnie Franklin was arrested in 2010 (and,...
