“Play your own fucking songs!” a bearded man yelled at Eric Church during the country singer’s headlining performance at 2024’s Stagecoach festival. Church, seated on a stool with his guitar in his hands and a gospel choir behind him, was midway through a freewheeling set — of hymns, covers of Neil Diamond and Al Green, and his own reworked hits — that was in stark contrast to his familiar anthems heard on country radio. Judging by the reaction of the crowd, which by the show’s end had thinned out considerably,...

1970s pop group Little Roger and the Goosebumps created their most famous song out of a combination of exhaustion, desperation and an affection for situation comedies. In 1977, the band needed “material to pad the last set of the grueling 5 nights a week/4 sets a night routine.” Their solution: A goofy, Weird Al-esque mashup of hard rock standard “Stairway to Heaven” and the theme song to Gilligan’s Island.
The song went over well enough with live audiences that Little Roger and the Goosebumps recorded a single, which became a signature tune for the obscure band. The group’s members were good enough musicians that they could recreate Led Zeppelin’s signature sound themselves, while appropriating every inane lyric from “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Island,” the theme to the Bob Denver sitcom. It was a nice little success story — that is, until Led Zeppelin’s lawyers got wind of it,...

Filming a multi-camera sitcom with a live studio audience is probably pretty fun, and when it comes to Chuck Lorre's hit CBS series "The Big Bang Theory," the cast has been pretty clear over the years that one (very good) episode in season 7 was particularly delightful to film.
In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," main cast members Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik — who played Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, and Amy Farrah Fowler — fondly look back on filming the season 7 episode "The Scavenger Vortex," where Raj sets up a scavenger hunt for his friends and goes all out. So how did the episode even come into being?

Fans of music documentaries, rejoice. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (known as Limehof to Long Island culture enthusiasts in the know), is launching the world’s first film festival devoted exclusively to music docs.
The inaugural Limehof Music Documentary Film Festival will take place from August 8 – 10, with a to-be-announced lineup that will pair the best current documentaries with musical performances and conversations with the artists who have shaped music history. And while Limehof has long been devoted to celebrating New York’s rich musical history, which runs the gamut from Billy Joel and Neil Diamond to Mariah Carey and Barbara Streisand, the festival aims to expand the institution’s horizons to encompass new mediums and celebrate artists from around the world.
“We have a deep connection to the music industry in Long Island, but not too long ago we decided to include ‘entertainment’ in our title.

Distilling the musical legacy of the Grateful Dead into one night is no small feat, and into three hours is an even taller order. But Don Was — longtime president of Blue Note Records, respected multi-instrumentalist and musical director for the Jan. 31 MusiCares Persons of the Year event — was up to the task, curating an inspired lineup of devotees, including Billy Strings, The War on Drugs, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan and Wynonna Judd, and longtime collaborators like John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby and Was himself, who’s a touring member of Bob Weir’s Wolf Bros playing his signature upright bass.
As Was tells it, the set list came together organically, with the artists choosing which songs to play in concert with show producer Rac Clark and MusiCares’ Laura Segura. The end result ran the gamut from the popular (“Truckin’,” performed by Yoakam) to the ambitious (“Terrapin Station...

Garth Hudson, the keyboardist, sax player and archivist for Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Band whose farewell show with the group was memorialized in Martin Scorsese’s landmark documentary The Last Waltz, died Tuesday in his sleep at a nursing home in Woodstock, NY. He was 87.

Barbra Streisand celebrated Richard Perry’s “uncanny ability to pick the hits” in a tribute to the late producer, who died this week at the age of 82.

Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.
But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

Hey, all that tuition isn’t going to pay itself.
With Will Ferrell’s three sons either in college or approaching that threshold in the next few years, the comedian must feel the need to stash some cash to pay all of those university bills. How else to explain Ferrell’s new starring role as Mr. Monopoly in commercials promoting the gaming universe Monopoly Go?
That said, it’s far from the first time the comedian with an estimated net worth of $160 million has shouted “Show me the money!” at our corporate overlords. Here are six more Ferrell commercials, ranked by the shamelessness of the cash grab…
6 General Motors
Let’s cut Ferrell some slack for this Gm ad for two reasons. One, Ferrell is an electric car driver himself so appearing in a funny ad promoting Ev benefits makes sense from the vantage point of personal values. Second, it’s the freaking Super Bowl!
