In 2017, I ended my marriage of almost 12 years. It wasn’t one big betrayal. No one was a villain, not really. What happened was the oppressive weight of being a wife and mother and the burden of heterosexual marriage broke me. Three years later, in 2020, I realized I wasn’t alone. That the cultural weight of society keeps slipping onto the shoulders of mothers and wives. We are breaking. My book This American Ex Wife examines the way marriage is inherently unequal, and the way our culture defines love as misery,...

When the Key Western Fest kicks off Tuesday in Key West — the third music festival in as many weeks centered around the town’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater — it’ll feature a lineup that is unique among its country music peers. The bill is an all-women showcase of predominantly Nineties country stars.
“I’m so happy this festival has the balls, and ovaries, to offer a lineup like this,” Suzy Bogguss — who will share the stage with Wynonna Judd and Mickey Guyton — tells Rolling Stone. “I really cannot wait to see...

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
This is a moment overflowing with worthy country songs, so even though this category makes room for six nominees, there are others worth considering. Megan Moroney’s “Tennessee Orange” has to be in the conversation, according to CMT’s Leslie Fram. “I listened to all her songs and was like, ‘Ok, she is a real songwriter,...

In a year when country music had its share of viral wonders and flash-in-the-pan hits, Lainey Wilson has been playing the long game. Since releasing her first major-label album, Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’, in 2021, she’s won over country music fans and the Nashville industry with her well-crafted songs and unfiltered Louisiana drawl, scoring CMA and ACM awards along the way (as well as landing a role on Yellowstone). It should all make her a prominent contender at the Grammys, where Bell Bottom Country and the Number One single...

One of our favorite fellows competing on “The Masked Singer” season 9 is disguised as the Macaw. He wowed the crowd in his first appearance on March 22 with rollicking renditions of “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain. It became clear quite quickly that this contender is someone who makes a living by raising his voice in song.
Forget those guessses by the judges that Macaw is Zayn Malik, Doug Robb or Elijah Wood. We’ve rewatched those first two performances and taken another look at his clues package. We are sure we’ve cracked the code as to Macaw’s true identity. Keep reading as we have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Macaw?”
We are absolutely certain that the Macaw is “American Idol” alumni David Archuleta. Don’t believe us?...

At the height of the pandemic, Jess Williamson found herself taking long walks with her neighbor Natalie Mering, who performs as Weyes Blood. “I had met her in passing over the years, but we didn’t know each other,” says Williamson. “We were podded up, and we got to be really good friends.” Venturing around Los Feliz with Mering’s Pomeranian, Luigi, the songwriters discussed their upcoming music and dating, even starting a group text titled Ho Support. “We’d talk about boys and sorcery,” Mering says. “Mostly boys.”

Radical joy and consistent action were the messages at Nashville’s Love Rising benefit concert on Monday, an event that drew supporters to the city’s downtown Bridgestone Arena. Hosted by Drag Race alumna Asia O’Hara and featuring performances by Hayley Williams, Hozier, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Maren Morris, Allison Russell, Joy Oladokun, and Nashville’s drag artists — among many others — the concert raised money for four Tennessee organizations working to fight the state government’s ongoing legislative attacks against the LGBTQ+ community.

As Tennessee lawmakers attempt to push some members of the LGBTQ+ community out of the public sphere, Jason Isbell and Allison Russell organized Love Rising, a joyous fundraising event that offered support for those under attack. The March 21st concert hosted sets by Sheryl Crow, Brittany Howard, Julien Baker, Hozier, several members of country supergroup The Highwomen, and more, including Hayley Williams with the live debut of “Inordinary” and a cover of Deana Carter’s “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”
The fundraiser benefited Tennessee Equality Project, inclusion tennessee, OUTMemphis, The Tennessee Pride Chamber, and The Looking Out Foundation, which offered to double any donations it received up to $100,000. Donations remain open and ongoing.

During a performance at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, Paramore’s Hayley Williams showcased a dynamic cover of Deana Carter’s hit Nineties single “Did I Shave My Legs for This?,” off the country singer’s debut album of the same name.

Lainey Wilson Writes Her Version of ‘Strawberry Wine’ With Nostalgic New Song ‘Watermelon Moonshine’
Lainey Wilson looks back on a young and reckless love in the new song “Watermelon Moonshine,” her latest release from her upcoming second album. Bell Bottom Country, the follow-up to the “Things a Man Oughta Know” singer’s 2021 breakout Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’, will be released Oct. 28 via Bbr Music Group/Broken Bow Records.
There’s some thematic similarity between “Watermelon Moonshine” and Deana Carter’s classic “Strawberry Wine”: Wilson describes a memory of being 18 and in love, having tastes of homemade booze, and then giving in to pleasure.

Next week’s CMA Fest in Nashville will feature hundreds of the hottest acts in Country Music. One thing it will not feature, however, is the Confederate flag.
Along with drones, bikes and drug paraphernalia, the festival’s list of prohibited items and activities now includes “Confederate flag imagery of any kind.” The event’s Code of Conduct further covers things like hate speech:
CMA is committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive culture where all people have access to experience Country Music. Therefore, inappropriate behavior such as discrimination, harassment, any form of abuse and/or targeted comments which may cause any person to fear for their safety at the Event will not be tolerated.
That includes “any displays of the Confederate flag,” according to a statement the Country Music Association provided to the Tennessean this week.
Some country musicians have, over the decades, wrapped themselves — or their stage setup — in the Confederate flag.

Is it too early to predict that we’ve already found the next American Idol? Because Sunday’s episode, just the second week of the show’s 20th season, definitely introduced at least two major contenders.
Let’s start with this week’s Platinum Ticket recipient, 17-year-old Kenedi Anderson, who blew Katy Perry’s mind with a piano-based reinvention of Lady Gaga’s “Applause.” The performance was heavily promo’d, but no truncated tease could have done it justice. Not only did Anderson completely reimagine the song in her own ethereal style, but her voice is absolutely insane and her instincts are spot on.

Monday’s episode of The Voice not only marked the beginning of Season 21’s Knockouts, it slid into the Mega Mentor’s seat Ed Sheeran (pre-positive Covid-19 test, obviously). And he quickly proved himself to be not only a savvy advisor to Blake Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande’s starstruck teams but also a right charming chap, too. One minute, he was playfully praising Blake’s dressing-room rendition of “Sweet Caroline,” the next he was cracking wise about how Yanks think that every Englishman drinks tea and knows the queen. And Ok, fine, he has met her,...

For $1,000, Carrie Underwood will wish you a happy birthday. The country music superstar is one of a number of country singers appearing on the video service Cameo for the month of June, part of a charitable partnership with the Academy of Country Music’s philanthropic organization, ACM Lifting Lives.
Among the more than 25 country stars participating, Underwood commands top dollar at a cool grand. Trace Adkins is behind her at $400, followed by singer and This Is Us actress Chrissy Metz at $350. Josh Turner will speak to you in his baritone...

Sara Bareilles’ singer-songwriter and acting sides both get a workout this month. On May 6, she debuts on Peacock’s “Girls5eva,” a Tina Fey-executive-produced comedy about a late-’90s girl group whose 40-something members reunite after their ancient hit gets sampled in a hip-hop song. And she’s back on more familiar show business turf — albeit what was at the time a new headlining venue for her — on the album “Amidst the Chaos: Live at the Hollywood Bowl,” out May 21.
You’re a New Yorker now, but you chose to commemorate your recent tour with a live album from the Bowl, not Madison Square Garden. Why?
The Bowl was my very first experience of live music as a new UCLA student. My college roommate and I went to see Faith Hill and Deana Carter; we sat in the cheapest seats at the very top, and it was transcendent. The Bowl has so much warmth,...

Kesha phoned into the latest socially distanced episode of The Tonight Show Friday to deliver an intimate home recording of “Resentment,” a song from her 2020 LP High Road.
The studio version of the single features Brian Wilson and Sturgill Simpson, but Kesha stripped the acoustic ballad to its core for the Tonight Show performance, which raised awareness for Live Nation’s Crew Nation initiative.
Earlier in the week, the “bored at home” Kesha unveiled a mini-song inspired by Home Alone. She also announced plans to record a speech for iHeartMedia’s new podcast project,...

For many, the name Kim Carnes calls to mind one particular song title: “Bette Davis Eyes.” That’s what spending nine weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 will do. Two years before that song hit the charts, though, Carnes was approached by country-pop superstar Kenny Rogers to work on a different sort of project. The singer wanted to create a concept album telling the tale of a modern-day cowboy, and he wanted Carnes — a prolific songwriter who’d spent the first part of her career penning tunes...

It often seems like women have almost as hard a time catching a break at country awards shows as they do on country radio, judging from the fact that neither the Cma Awards nor Acm Awards could come up with a single female to nominate for entertainer of the year for the last two years running. That women problem didn’t run over to the Cmt Music Awards, where Carrie Underwood was not only nominated for the top prize Wednesday night but won it, picking up the fan-voted video of the year award for “Cry Pretty.”
That Underwood was not in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to accept the prize was nothing personal. She’d just finished an off-site performance of her new single, “Southside,” a few miles away for an outdoor crowd of glowstick wavers at the Parthenon. Underwood also won favorite female video for “Love Wins,” putting her tally...

I’d like to begin by congratulating you — and your many empty Kleenex boxes — on surviving 10 hours of American Idol auditions. It hasn’t always been easy, but at least we can take solace in knowing that most of the people we’ve come to know and love will soon be eliminated, making the whole introductory process kind of pointless. (Wait, what?)

Lauren Alaina made her first appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday night, performing her current single “Ladies in the ’90s.” The song, penned by Alaina with Jesse Frasure and Amy Wadge, is the singer’s first new music to follow her 2017 album Road Less Traveled.
In a square-shouldered dress and flanked by her bandmates, Alaina sings of growing up “on radio waves, when the ladies dominated.” In the chorus, she references Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine,” Britney Spears’ “Baby,” Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,...

Walker Hayes embraces Nineties nostalgia with his new single “Nineties Country,” which furthers the trope of lyrics built around the song titles of past hits. But Hayes doesn’t take the lazy route here — while he drops allusions to major hits like George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” and Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy,” the Alabama songwriter digs deep to include nods to Shenandoah (“The Church on Cumberland Road”) and even Ken Mellons (“Jukebox Junkie”).

With the elimination of Sharane Calister on the May 1 results show, “The Voice” is now down to just 10 artists still in contention to win season 14. On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” the Top 11 artists coached by Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton performed. The goal for each contestant was to make it into the top 10 on iTunes by Tuesday at noon Et so that they reaped the benefit of a vote multiplier.
We can report that only two of the acts registered enough sales to earned this bonus: Pryor Baird with his version of “Night Moves” by Bob Seeger and Britton Buchanan for his rendition of “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Last week only seven of the dozen artists made the top 100. This week all but Sharane Calister cracked the top 100. (See the full list of songs and where they ranked below.)
The two lowest in the standings as revealed by host Carson Daly on May 1 will have to sing again in hopes of winning the Instant Save via viewers’ votes from Twitter.
