Nothing, Except Everything is getting a big-screen treatment. That’s the name of a short film that earned plaudits for young writer/director Wesley Wang when it premiered last September. Wang has now inked a deal with Darren Aronofsky‘s Protozoa for a feature adaptation of Nothing, Except Everything.
According to Deadline, TriStar Pictures has picked up the film rights for Nothing, Except Everything. Wang’s 13-minute short film, which explores existential themes in a high school setting, was already a film festival darling before its breakout on YouTube. At the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, Wang won the Summer White Lynch Memorial Award, which goes to an outstanding high school filmmaker. The 19-year-old Harvard student completed Nothing, Except Everything during his senior year of high school.

Legendary film editor Thelma Schoonmaker is honoring the films of filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with an upcoming retrospective at MoMA.
Titled “Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger,” the screening series is presented in collaboration with the BFI and will take place from June 21 to July 31. The program includes more than 50 films — many of which are new restorations — and was curated by conservation experts, archivists, and curators at the BFI National Archive.
Oscar-winning editor Schoonmaker will open the series on June 21 with an introduction to the new digital restoration of “Black Narcissus” (1947). Schoonmaker was married to British director Powell from 1984 until his death in 1990.
Powell and Pressburger’s cultural legacy is most notably recognized in their film “The Red Shoes” (1948), which has inspired sequences in films such as Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull,” which Schoonmaker edited.

After years of making films in his native Japan, writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi found unexpected global success in 2021 with “Drive My Car.”
Adapted and expanded from short stories by Haruki Murakami, it’s an exquisite drama about a grieving theater director staging a multilingual “Uncle Vanya,” and his relationship with the pensive young woman employed to drive his cherry-red Saab.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, where Hamaguchi and co-writer Takamasa Oe won the Best Screenplay prize, “Drive My Car” went on to dominate the fall festival circuit. The film clocked up an astonishing four nominations at the 2022 Oscars, including Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Hamaguchi, and went on to win Japan’s first Oscar for Best International Film.
Hamaguchi’s latest film, “Evil Does Not Exist” is to some extent a response to that overwhelming acclaim. “I knew that I wanted my next work to be very...

According to the origin of Marvel’s Thor, the All-Father Odin sends his son to Earth to learn humility. It sounds like Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has had to do the same thing.
Hemsworth’s Thor was riding high going into 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, following 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, which won over fans who dismissed his first two solo outings, as well as the strong emotional arc in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. But for many, Love and Thunder pushed the wacky sensibilities of writer/director Taika Waititi too far, resulting in a movie too glib to be funny. And Hemsworth agrees.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” the Aussie actor recently admitted to Vanity Fair. “I didn’t stick the landing.”
It’s easy to see why Hemsworth leaned so far into Waititi’s style for Love and Thunder.

Chris Hemsworth graces the cover of Vanity Fair’s May 2024 issue, where he revealed that he feels Marvel fans deserve another “Thor” movie after the whiff that was 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The actor already admitted to GQ last year that his fourth standalone “Thor” movie was “too silly” for its own good, but the misstep appears to continue to haunt him.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “I didn’t stick the landing.”
While Hemsworth has always been grateful for his career-defining role as Thor, he admitted to the publication that he grew frustrated with the character while playing him in four standalone Marvel films and additional “Avengers” movies.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team,” Hemsworth said. “I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, ‘Oh, they got way cooler stuff.

If you never thought Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake can be turned into something evil not once, it surely can — and the brand new horror has once again proven it. Coming as some kind of cinematic nod to Natalie Portman’s 2010 thriller Black Swan, Abigail sticks to the idea that classic ballerinas and supernatural horrors are actually very much compatible.
Though Abigail, starring Alisha Weir as a ballet dancer having yet to demonstrate to her kidnappers that she’s not a normal little girl, goes further than Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller hit, both movies have much more in common than it seems first.
Black Swan and Abigail Are Way More Similar Than You Thought
Natalie Portman’s Nina and Alisha Weir’s Abigail don’t unveil their inner villainy unless they’re triggered by different outside factors: Nina is always confronted by her ballet instructor Mr. Leroy, portrayed by Vincent Cassel,...

Exclusive: Following a competitive situation with what we hear were four offers, TriStar Pictures has snapped up film rights to Wesley Wang’s nothing, except everything., a short film that Wang will adapt for the big screen as writer and director, with Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa producing.
A 19-year-old currently studying economics at Harvard, Wang made nothing, except everything. during his senior year of high school, seeing it go viral on YouTube and win the Grand Jury Prize at Indianapolis’s Indy Shorts Film Festival. Billed as a romantic sci-fi thriller, the film watches as a graduating high schooler navigates a world of seemingly inevitable chaos by finding order in the number 7. Based on that logline, it’s not hard to see how Harvard alum Aronofsky might have sparked to the material, similar as it is to that of his 1998 debut feature, Pi.

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

Nicole Kidman is the 2024 AFI Life Achievement Award honoree for her film career.
“Nicole Kidman embodies the glamour and romance of Hollywood past – a true screen icon – but she is also a risk taker – and so each performance is something new and something profound,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President & CEO. “And like all truly great artists – Nicole not only gives back – she drives culture forward with her commitment to amplifying the voices of female directors and producers.”
Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts and Reese Witherspoon are some of the presenters who honored Kidman at the event at the Dolby Theatre on April 27.

Netflix giveth, and Netflix taketh away! Here we go again.
Can you believe we're already nearing the end of April? That means May is on the way — and summer is right around the corner. Here's hoping all these April showers do, indeed, turn into May flowers and bring on a pleasant spring. But while spring is often a season of new beginnings, it's time to say goodbye to several great titles that are currently streaming on Netflix but won't be around much longer. As always, there's a chance these movies and TV shows will return someday. For now, though, they're saying bye-bye. So act fast!
Below, I've highlighted some of the great titles you might want to watch Asap. The full list of titles leaving the service awaits you at the bottom. Let's get to it!

The world of cinema is mostly colorful and bright and it gives you a chance to escape your reality and dive deeper into different sorts of fantasies. It’s so inspiring to see the good always winning despite all the obstacles and for example love beating it all in a romantic comedy.
However, real life is not always like that, that’s why along with the feel-good movies there are also many films that hit hard. It’s especially painful to watch movies like that because deep inside, you still have hope that everything’s going to work out for the best for the main characters. But sometimes it just doesn't…

Unless you've been living under a rock recently, you're aware that movie theaters have been in a tough spot for nearly half a decade now, if not longer. Various factors have contributed to this, of course -- everything from the Covid-19 pandemic to the economy itself contributing to higher prices for a night out at the movies (especially for a family). Yet perhaps the biggest point of contention for those not fully inducted into the church of moviegoing is that old chestnut coined by Jean-Paul Sartre: Hell is other people.
Due to being at the tail end of several decades' worth of manufacturers and big box stores pushing home theater technology, the average living room theater setup tends to rival most generic movie theater screens in terms of picture and sound quality, with the convenience of the setup already being in one's home, away from loud talking randos and teens on their bright smartphones,...

Actors have to learn to do all kinds of interesting things in order to play various roles, from accents to dance moves to various skills and hobbies. Jennifer Lawrence learned how to skin and gut a squirrel for her role in the 2010 Kentucky holler noir "Winter's Bone," for example, and the actors in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to learn how to hold their breath for an extended length of time. For Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" and "Dune: Part Two," star Timothée Chalamet theoretically had to learn quite a bit, because there are many aspects of life on the desert planet Arrakis that just don't have direct Earth counterparts. It's not like he can just magically understand what it's like to be surrounded by the psychic power-giving spice, for example, but he certainly has to pretend. Out this week in theaters is Radio Silence’s Abigail, a heist-turned-bloodbath when kidnappers realize the child ballerina they’ve snatched isn’t quite human. That the petite vampire is a ballerina feels apt. After all, the deceptive art form has a reputation for dainty elegance that belies the sheer grueling dedication of its performers, both physically and mentally.
Ballet requires a high level of dedication to practice and performance and frequently spills over into body horror through broken toenails, stress fractures, and overuse injuries. In other words, ballet is often a mix of pain and beauty, which means it pairs well with horror.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ballerinas in horror.
These horror movies feature at least one ballerina tormented by her art form, highlighting the stark, beguiling contrast between beauty and horror. Here’s where you can stream them now.

Jennifer Lawrence has had a prolific career over the years and has shown her versatility as an actress starting from her first few projects. Sebastian Stan is exploring roles beyond the shadow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and making quite a good impression out of it. Also, it seems the actor has a newfound interest in the horror genre. Stan appeared in two horror movies recently, including Mimi Cave’s Fresh and his most recent A Different Man.
Sebastian Stan in A Different Man
Stan has tested his tolerance level for a role as well. While his appearance in horror movies is well adjacent to the actor, one horror movie frightened the MCU star. Jennifer Lawrence, who led the movie, also endured intense nightmares.

Darren Aronofsky is one of the Hollywood directors who has created a legacy by making some of the most disturbing movies, including Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and Mother! Particularly, Mother! was frightening, and its disturbing elements were not exclusive to the audience.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

Francis Ford Coppola is considered one of the leading figures of the New Hollywood film movement in the 1960s and ’70s. After graduating from the UCLA Film School, he worked on several projects in the early 1960s and made his first feature-length film, Dementia 13 in 1963.
Francis Ford Coppola and Marlon Brando on the sets of The Godfather
There have been numerous instances in the industry when filmmakers have struggled to bring their ideas to the big screen because the studios did not like them. Copolla was no exception. Long before he gained acclaim with The Godfather in 1972, the legendary director was determined to debase the studio system which often tended to suppress his visions for cinema.
Luckily, he has finally achieved that with his self-funded film Megalopolis, and viewers are moved to the core after watching it.

When Hugh Jackman bid farewell to his iconic role as Wolverine in the 2017 flick Logan, fans were struck by a bittersweet feeling. The movie proved to be an appropriate goodbye to the much-loved character, revealing a more vulnerable and emotional side to the clawed mutant. However, what many fans might not know is that The Wolverine couldn’t have taken place if Fox had adhered to their original plan to have Darren Aronofsky helm the 2013 flick.
The Wolverine, a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), was originally slated to be directed by Aronofsky, who is best known for his dark and intense movies like Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. But, as fate would have it, the director eventually dropped out of the project in order to allow James Mangold to step in and take the reins.

Although acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky stated that he would be directing an Elon Musk biopic at A24, this is not going to be his next movie, if reports are true. Namely, recent news suggests that Aronofsky is actually working on a crime thriller based on a book by Charlie Huston. The movie’s title is probably going to be Caught Stealing and as Empire confirms, the movie will star Oscar-nominee Austin Butler in the main role of Hank Thompson.
While speaking to Deadline, Aronofsky said the following about his upcoming project:
“I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers.”

Austin Butler's career is certainly on fire at the moment, between his scene-stealing role in Dune: Part Two and his small screen work on Masters Of The Air. So naturally, he's in demand. The actor has now landed another plum role, starring in Darren Aronofsky's next film, Caught Stealing.
The Whale's director has author Charlie Huston adapting his own novel, which follows Hank Thompson (Butler), a burned-out former baseball player whose neighbor lands him with a cat and a whole world of trouble. He's soon deep within the New York crime scene, running for his life and trying to figure out what he's truly gotten himself into.
“I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers,” Aronofsky tells Deadline.

Elvis and Dune: Part Two actor Austin Butler is to star in Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller, Caught Stealing.
Austin Butler has developed a taste for working with directors of a certain merit, and you can’t argue with the results. Since 2019, Butler has acted in films by Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino, Baz Luhrman (in his breakout role as Elvis Presley) and Dennis Villeneuve. The latter saw him take the role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the recently-released Dune: Part Two, and there’s no arguing that he was able to take a relatively limited amount of screen time and produce an antagonist who will live long in the memory.
Next, Butler has The Bikeriders coming up, directed by Jeff Nichols. Then there’s Eddington with Ari Aster, not to mention those rumours regarding a role in Michael Mann’s upcoming sequel to Heat. It’s an impressive list and yet,...

Austin Butler is continuing his auteur collaborations, this time partnering up with Darren Aronofsky.
Butler, who was Oscar-nominated for his breakout transformative “Elvis” role, is set to lead Aronofsky’s upcoming feature “Caught Stealing.” Novelist Charlie Huston will adapt his own work for the screen. Protozoa is producing the Sony crime thriller. The novel is the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy series.
“Caught Stealing” was originally set for an adaptation in 2013 with Patrick Wilson cast in the lead role, now occupied by Butler. The story follows Hank Thompson, a former high school baseball prospect turned alcoholic bartender who gets caught up in a treasure hunt through New York City. A sadistic police officer tries to outrun Thompson, hitmen, and mobsters to find the treasure. Alec Baldwin was cast as the cop in the 2013 iteration that was slated to be written by David Hayter and directed by Wayne Kramer.

Austin Butler may not be confirmed to be co-starring in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, but the Masters of the Air actor has now been reported to be set to be the lead in Caught Stealing. Since 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler’s star has really taken off. Coming off his creepy villain turn in Dune: Part Two, Austin Butler is lining up a new feature.
Butler will star in the crime thriller Caught Stealing, which hails from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Sony has acquired the package, which is based on the book by Charlie Huston, and per the logline, it “follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.”
Huston penning the script. Aronofsky’s is producing via his Protozoa Pictures.
Butler rose to new levels of critical acclaim with 2022’s Elvis, the Baz Luhrmann biopic that earned Butler his first Oscar nomination. In Dune: Part Two, Butler earned a strong reaction for his work as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the psychotic villain who goes toe-to-toe with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. Coming up, he has 1960s motorcycle drama The Bikeriders out in June.
