Sean McGinly's feature directing debut The Great Buck Howard was about a man a bit past his prime in his chosen profession (magic) but still doggedly pursuing his trade. For his next act, McGinly will be telling a similar story, just with a bit of grand larceny thrown in. According to Variety he'll be adapting and directing The Old Man and the Gun, based on the New Yorker article about a bank robber who kept his career going until he was nearly 80. An archived version of the article is available here, and it starts with a captivating description of Forrest Tucker's last bank robbery, for which he dressed in all white and after which he thanked the tellers for handing over more than $5,000. Tucker said of his life story, "I've been in prison all my life, except for the times I've broken out," and walks around with shrapnel...

If there’s one phrase I would use to describe The Great Buck Howard, it would be “low key.” This is a PG-rated, harmless and rather toothless look at a has-been whose days of fame have long since passed him by. Written and directed by Sean McGinly but driven by an appealing performance from John Malkovich, Buck Howard is watchable but neither particularly engaging nor emotionally effecting.
Malkovich plays Buck Howard, whose glory days (and 61, count it, 61 appearances on Late Night with Johnny Carson) are behind him. Howard is equal parts eccentric and manic, a drama queen with a tendency to go off on the poor unfortunate soul who happens to be his assistant at the time. Enter Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), fresh out of law school (which he quits, walking out in the middle of a class) and with aspirations to find his calling (could it be writing?).

Release Date: March 20 (limited)
Director/Writer: Sean McGinly
Cinematographer: Tak Fujimoto
Starring: John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, Emily Blunt
Studio/Run Time: Magnolia Pictures, 87 mins.
Dramedy about warshed-up mentalist: totally straight, genuinely entertaining
John Malkovich is magnificently magnanimous as The Great Buck Howard's titular mentalist-not-magician. Loosely based on the life of '70s TV staple the Amazin' Kreskin (Aka: George Kresge) Malkovich brings considerable affection to Howard's late-career affectations. Playing opposite Howard's decline is Colin (son of Tom) Hanks, who likewise brings real warmth to Howard's beleaguered road manager, Troy, a soft-faced everyman. Family friendly (or at least seriously PG), the film is also utterly formulaic and totally safe, right down to the love interest (Emily Blunt's spot-on Valerie). But the details are real (of course the flighty Valerie is a publicist), the humor is sharp and self-aware, the celebrity cameos are done right (Michael Winslow! Jonathan Ames!), and voiceovers,...

'Variations' on a ThemeColin Hanks and Samantha Mathis on turning points, Jane Fonda, and famous parentsBy Simi HorwitzColin Hanks and Samantha Mathis admit that the chance to appear on a Broadway stage with Jane Fonda was a major draw. So was performing in a work written and directed by Moisés Kaufman (Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde). From the outset they knew 33 Variations would be a high-profile production and scrutiny would be intense — especially for Hanks, who is making his Broadway debut and whose father is Tom Hanks. Mathis also hails from an industry family. Her late mother is the well-known television actor Bibi Besch, and her grandmother Gusti Huber starred in the original Broadway productions of The Diary of Anne Frank and Dial M for Murder. Hanks and Mathis take their family backgrounds in stride. At least that's how they come off when they talk about their famous parents — the advantages,...

The Great Buck Howard Directed by: Sean McGinly Cast: Colin Hanks, John Malkovich, Emily Blunt, Steve Zahn Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins Rating: R Plot: Buck Howard used to spend his days on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." Who’s It For? For people who are sick of YouTube making everything "instant entertainment." And if you're obsessed with Malkovich, this let's you see him in a different, but still kooky, light. Expectations: There wasn't a lot of buzz about this film at Sundance, so I decided not to think "great" just cause it was in the title. Scorecard (0-10) Actors: Colin Hanks as Troy Gabel: A writer. Really? That's the job Troy wants. Not a lawyer like his father expects. His dad looks a lot like his real life dad Tom Hanks. Must be the lighting. Just like in...

While many great movies are released every year, not all of them feel "special" in that they have the same impact every time you see them, though for the life of you, you can't figure out why. That's certainly the case with Sean McGinly's The Great Buck Howard , which we first saw at the Sundance Film Festival last year. It stars John Malkovich as the film's title character, a flamboyant master of sleight of hand and mentalism whose heydays are mostly behind him. Colin Hanks plays Troy, a wannabe writer who takes a job as his road manager and finds himself dealing with all of Buck Howard's eccentricities. Maybe it's the fact that the Troy character and his situations come from McGinly's own personal experiences working for The Amazing Kreskin that makes the film...

The Great Buck Howard
Starring Colin Hanks, John Malkovich, and Emily Blunt
Directed by Sean McGinly
Rated PG
There are times when your interest in a movie is raised just by part of the central premise. A couple of years ago, I was inrigued to see a movie called Colour Me Kubrick because John Malkovich was playing a con man passing himself off as reclusive director Stanley Kubrick. He'd say he was the man behind 2001 and Dr. Strangelove and tell bar patrons he needed more money to make his next film, and leave check in hand.
That was based on a true story, actually, but the film didn't improve on it.
This year, my interest in The Great Buck Howard was heightened by the notion of Malkovich playing a washed-up mentalist trying to mount a pop culture comeback. The character is based on The Amazing Kreskin, who marveled television audiences...

With John Malkovich play ing a flamboyant mentalist who's hypnotized himself into believing he's not a has-been, what's not to like about "The Great Buck Howard"?
Sean McGinly's affectionate satire of the lower rungs of show business failed to meet off-the-charts expectations when it premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. Kitsch is cool in this sad, sweet, funny ode to being oneself, no matter how dorky oneself is. Colin Hanks (The House Bunny) is Troy Gabel, a young man disillusioned with law school who drops out to figure out his life and takes a money job working as an assistant to the has-been stage magician Buck Howard. Now relegated to the community-theater circuit, Buck clings to his former fame -- he appeared upmteen times on The Tonight Show (“with Johnny Carson,” Buck always hastens to add) -- though, it must be said, his small following of devotees, mostly well over 60, still love him: he’s “cheesy,” Troy notes with wry approval, but he has “a timeless charm.” And then the fickle finger of pop culture touches Buck once more and threatens to ruin it all... Graced with a down-to-earth realism -- writer-director Sean McGinly pulled a Troy-like tour of duty for the Great Kreskin,...

It's been over a year since Sean McGinly's The Great Buck Howard premiered in Salt Lake City as part of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival , but it's been a lot longer since McGinly first wrote the script based on his own experiences working for a mentalist, The Amazing Kreskin, and tried to get the film made. The film's savior came with the first actor McGinly approached, Colin Hanks, who was interested in playing the role of Troy Gable, a disgruntled law student who leaves school to become a writer, getting a job as the road manager for a famed mentalist touring small towns across the country. It's a touching comedy that will probably be remembered mainly for John Malkovich's performance as the flamboyant entertainer of the title and his larger than life stage persona, but one...

Today, I picked up two new one-sheets on my poster radar:
The first one is for Steven Shill's upcoming thriller "Obsessed," which opens April 24, 2009 and stars Beyoncé Knowles, Idris Elba and Ali Larter.
The film focuses on a successful asset manager who's living a fabulous life until everything spins out of control when a sexy temp worker starts stalking him.
The poster you can check out below is not really original, but then again, the trailer for the film isn't that exciting either. In fact, if you want to see the entire movie in two minutes, watch the preview here. And how about that ridiculous tagline: "All's fair when love is war."

After a series of schlocky small films, some of which went straight-to-dvd, it looks like writer/director Sean McGinly is ready for the big time. McGinly’s The Great Buck Howard debuted almost a year ago at Sundance 2008 and got fairly positive reviews (see Peter’s mini-review of the film here and some more reviews here). The film carries some pretty impressive star power, with John Malkovich playing Buck Howard, a mentalist who is just on this side of washed up, and Colin Hanks as Troy Gable, Howard’s road manager. Tom Hanks will play Gable’s father, a role that he’s spent 31 years preparing for.

The film is helmed and written by Sean McGinly ("Two Days," "Brothers") and opens on March 20th next year. To the untrained eye, The Great Buck Howard (John Malkovich) may seem like a magician… but he's not. He's a mentalist. In his own humble opinion, his talents go far beyond mere sleight of hand; he can read minds, and is capable of hypnotizing an entire room full of people at once. But when Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) tries to explain to his Dad (Tom Hanks) why he dropped out of law school to work for a mentalist, it doesn't go over very well. In fact, it doesn't go over at all.

Living up to its name, Stuart Townsend's "Battle in Seattle" and its stars Charlize Theron and Martin Henderson will kick off the 34th Seattle International Film Festival on May 22 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.
The sprawling fest, which will screen 418 films during the course of 25 days, will run through June 15. The closing-night gala, set for June 14, is Randall Miller's "Bottle Shock", set in California's wine country and starring Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, which will screen at the Cinerama Theatre.
"This year's SIFF is fiercely independent with wide-ranging opportunities for people to explore new ways to look at the world through cinema," SIFF artistic director Carl Spence said. "Seventy percent of the films in the program are currently without U.S. distribution." Almost half of the features in the lineup come from first- or second-time directors.
The June 6 centerpiece gala will feature "The Great Buck Howard", directed by Sean McGinly and starring Colin Hanks and John Malkovich.

Several films at this year's festival are focused on the movie business itself. Shootout recently spoke with William H. Macy about his film The Deal, in which he plays a Hollywood producer trying to make a film about Benjamin Disraeli. Then there's The Great Buck Howard, Sean McGinly's plucky comedy about a law school dropout (Colin Hanks) who gets a job as personal assistant to a has-been celebrity (John...

PARK CITY- A has-been mentalist clings to his glory days in this affectionate on-the-road showbiz yarn, which played to an appreciative audience here at Sundance. Starring John Malkovich as a once-hot entertainer, The Great Buck Howard is a warm, amiable glimpse at the end of the showbiz road.
At his peak, Buck Howard guested on "Johnny Carson's Tonight Show," 61 times, earning along the way the appellation, The Great Buck Howard. It's a moniker Buck clings to, but a name that is lost on the new talk show hosts and youth market today. The Great Buck is, in short, an old fossil whose '70s style toupe and cornball approach no longer connect with audiences.
Great Buck is still ready for his close-up, but no one wants to see his mug except in no-so-great places. But Great Buck does not go quietly into a fade-out; he clings to the secondary circuit of Bakersfield, Wausau and other boondocks that the aging showman proclaims to love. Any day now, Buck believes Jay's people will call and he'll be back in the guest seat in Burbank. Buck's shot back to fame is hooked to creating one more super effect, which he hopes to launch with full media coverage.
The sidekick in this venerable road-show genre piece is an aspiring young writer, Troy (Colin Hanks), who handles Buck's logistics and indulges his vainglories. Diffident, yet brimming with a subversive sensibility, Troy had the mettle to stand up to his self-made father (Tom Hanks) and quit law school. In a sense, both travelers hope to find themselves: Buck to reconnect with his former self and Troy to develop his writer's voice and become the man that the dreams to be.
Dreams, of course, are fueled by many great things, and delusion and illusion are among them. In this light and mature amusement, filmmaker Sean McGinly taps the underside of ambition in Buck's vainglories. McGinly also distills the upside of resolve in aspiring writer Troy's quest for self-fulfillment. Beneath the froth, this comedy smartly touches those wellsprings, as well as reveals Buck's end-routine journey to Bakersfield.
Although it's got a serious side, writer/director Sean McGinly masks it with ripe and observant humor. The Great Buck Henry is an amiable trek, laced with sly irony and torqued with the wonderful notion that there is still magic in this world.
John Malkovich's performance as the fey and egotistical Buck is richly outlandish but shrewdly layered. No over-the-top rendition of a show-biz type, Malkovich conveys the admirable fiber and resilience of a once-great. Colin Hanks also distills the inner mettle of the affable, but resolute Troy.
The supporting characters are apt and well-chosen, particularly Steve Zahn as a local screwball and, nicely realistic, Ricky Jay as Buck's agent/manager. To boot, celebrity cameos, including Jack Carter, give credence to the storyline and theme.
Subtle oddities shine in this nicely understated comedy. Director of photography Tak Fujimoto's frames a sharp comic slant on secondary-cities, while production designer Gary Frutkoff's Americana is at perfect kitsch.
