We’re zapping into science fiction territory and back into “re-adaptation” conversations this month for Revenge of the Remakes. Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman bring vastly different approaches to their Invasion of the Body Snatchers films, uniformly citing Jack Finney’s 1954 novel “The Body Snatchers” as their source. Kaufman isn’t directly remaking Siegel’s film but acknowledges its existence multiple times; there’s a literary influence behind both features, yet Kaufman can’t ignore what already exists. The same conversation arose in my The Fly analysis, and will assuredly surface again down the road. Invasion of the Body Snatchers can’t help itself from being a remake, and with decades apart, Kaufman evolves the product into a contemporary extraterrestrial nightmare (speaking for the late 1970s).

Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted is loosely based on the invention of Pop-Tarts. Seinfeld’s feature directorial debut uses a shot inspired by the Steven Spielberg classic of 1975, Jaws. In the film, Spielberg uses the Dolly Zoom shot, which the Seinfeld creator has copied in his upcoming Netflix comedy. Seinfeld opened up about how such classic cinematic shots influenced him as a filmmaker.

As Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt join forces on screen for the upcoming action flick The Fall Guy, their promotional efforts have also seen playful nods to their 2023 movies, which created a cultural phenomenon Barbenheimer.
And the light-hearted rivalry between the two actors appears poised to persist, at least that’s what it seems from the Barbie star’s reaction to a reporter sharing his preference for the Christopher Nolan film over the Oscar-nominated movie.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy praised GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for being a “very serious legislator” despite her remarks about replacing House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade noted in an interview with McCarthy that Greene is hoping to oust Johnson, much like Rep. Matt Gaetz deposed him on October 3, 2023.
“Now what she’s doing is much different than what Matt Gaetz is doing – did,” the former House speaker stated. “She didn’t make it privileged, so it’s not up for a vote.”
“And the one thing I’ve always found about Marjorie is she’s a very serious legislator that deals with policy,” he added.

The former GOP speaker, Newt Gingrich, offered advice for House Speaker Mike Johnson on how he can deal with the “narcissists” in the GOP.
Gingrich attacked hard-right disrupters, calling them “narcissists” and “selfish idiots” while also praising the way Johnson handled an unmanageable caucus.
“[Johnson] has the narrowest majority in modern times, and it’s not a true majority because he’s got six or eight narcissists – people who think that they individually get to screw up everything,” the former GOP speaker told Politico.
He also called out Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) during this interview.
“I think they self-define,” he said of the GOP members. “I’d start with Gaetz, but I would say the list goes on. He’s the super narcissist.”

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) stated that he was removed because Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) wanted to stop the ethics investigation over his alleged affair with a 17-year-old girl.
“And I’ll give you the truth why I’m not speaker,” McCarthy shared during a recent event at Georgetown University. “It’s because one person – a member of Congress – wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old – an ethics complaint that started before I ever became speaker. And that’s illegal.”
“I’m not going to get in the middle,” he declared. “Did he do it or not? I don’t know.”
The former California representative was referring to a House Ethics Committee investigation that opened in 2021 regarding allegations that Gaetz violated sex trafficking laws and had relations with an underage girl.
This investigation was tabled to allow the Department of Justice to investigate.

Former GOP Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colorado) slammed GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for getting talking points from Russian President Vladimir Putin while threatening to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Now that Congress has returned from recess, Johnson has to figure out how he can pass new aid for Ukraine, something that far-right Republicans such as Greene oppose.
Greene slammed Johnson for holding a vote to fund Ukraine, saying it was one of the most “egregious things” he could do.
“Moscow Marjorie is focused now on this Ukraine issue, getting her talking points from the Kremlin, making sure she is popular, and getting a lot of coverage,’ Buck told CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is enacting a revenge plot against the eight House Republicans who ousted him.
In October 2023, McCarthy was booted from his position as House speaker when a group of Republicans joined all Democrats in voting to vacate the chair.
McCarthy is out for revenge against the group that he has dubbed the “Crazy Eight” or “Gaetz Eight” and its leader, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who introduced the motion to have the speaker vacated.
The former House speaker left Congress two months later. This ended up shrinking his party’s majority in the chamber.
McCarthy’s ally, Brian Walsh, is working to round up primary challengers to the “Gaetz Eight.”
The ousted speaker is prepared to mobilize his still-sizable donor network to arrange primary challenges. He is focusing on three representatives specifically. His allies believe that Reps. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), Bob Good (R-Virginia) and Eli Crane...

On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.
“We were promised regular order,” she stated. “That...

Updated: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) filed a motion Friday that could lead to a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson, less than a half year into his tenure.
Greene’s action came just as the House passed a $1.2 trillion package to fund the government through September and forestall a shutdown. The bill only would have passed with Democratic votes, with a majority of Republicans against it.
“Ok, deep breath America, here we go again,” CNN anchor Dana Bash told viewers after Manu Raju and other reporters interviewed Greene on the steps of the Capitol afterward.
No vote on Greene’s motion to vacate is scheduled, as she did not seek a “privileged” resolution that would have triggered a two-legislative day timeframe for a floor vote. That is what happened in October, when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl) led a successful effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. What...

Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. We got the fun and good with the Critters franchise, the bad with both Munchies and Hobgoblins,...

The 118th Congress looks like it will shape up to be one of the least productive in U.S. history, with only a few dozen laws passed by the close of 2023.
Data from analytics firm Quorum shows that this lack of productivity can be attributed to the divided partisan control of Washington and internal disagreements within the House Republican majority, which have consistently stalled legislative business.
One significant example of this legislative gridlock occurred for three weeks in the fall, when Congress was paralyzed due to the Republican Party’s inability to find a replacement for ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California).
The consequences of this internal strife are evident in the paltry number of bills that have been passed into law this year.
Quorum says that only 20 bills have been signed into law, with an additional four that await President Joe Biden‘s signature. This falls far below the productivity...

George Santos insisted he was ready to expose all those other frauds in Congress, talked about his political future, and tried to remember some Civil Rights icons during his eagerly anticipated post-expulsion interview with Ziwe.
To the extent that anything “news-y” came out of the 18-minute “exposé,” you could maybe look to Santos’ insistence of rampant fraud in the halls of Congress. “If you were to put them all under the same scrutiny I was put under, you’d fucking vacate the whole goddamn building,” he said.

Ziwe has found her latest iconic guest: George Santos.
After teasing a collab with the expelled congressman, comedian and celebrity interviewer Ziwe released her sit-down interview with Santos on YouTube on Monday morning.
Ziwe’s “Znn” interview, a CNN spoof with her own Ziwe News Network, began with onscreen text saying “No congressman were paid in the making of this interview even though George asked three times.” She then listed civil rights icons and asked Santos to say what they meant to him. The list included Marsha P. Johnson, James Baldwin, Harvey Milk and Bowen Yang’s “SNL” impression of Santos — which he said deserves an Egot.
When asked if he would want Yang to play him in HBO’s movie about him, Santos said “that movie is not ever going to happen. That book has no perspective of me or anybody close to me. It’s fucking fiction,” referring...

On December 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a speech at this year’s National Association of Christian Lawmakers gala.
During his speech, he thanked the event’s organizers for not inviting any reporters, though it has not been made clear if he knew that the event’s organizer would record and post a video of the gala on his Facebook page.
“I’ll tell you a secret since the media’s not here,” Johnson told them.
His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.
“The Lord impressed upon my heart a few weeks before this happened that something was going to occur,” he said. “And the Lord very specifically told me in my prayers to prepare but to wait. I had this sense that we were going to come to a Red Sea moment in our...

As rumors of Nikki Haley‘s addition to Donald Trump‘s election campaign fly, Republican House Representative from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, has stated that if Trump were to add Haley as his running mate, he would lose the support of the Maga movement.
Haley is now competing against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the closest contender for Trump’s running mate in the 2024 election. Additionally, Trump has been reflecting the majority of his grievances on DeSantis rather than Haley.
Greene has been thought to speak on behalf of the Maga movement and Pro-Trump voters. Her rejection of the idea not only comes from her opinion on the matter, but additionally from high profile figures that also reject the thought.
Greene posted on her Twitter (X) account that “Maga would revolt if Nikki Haley were to even be given an internship in Trump’s next administration.” She also states in...

The House of Representatives has officially authorized an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, formalizing their years-long fishing expedition against the president in a floor vote on Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 221-212 along party lines to approve the resolution authorizing the inquiry.
Before being ousted from the speakership by his own party, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) initiated a vote-less, officially unofficial impeachment inquiry into the president. Updated with Joe Biden statement: The House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to launch an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, a move Democrats say is being made without evidence of wrongdoing and at the behest of his likely rival in 2024, Donald Trump.
The vote was along party lines, 221-212.
From the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, President Biden quickly shot back, calling the inquiry vote a “baseless political stunt.”
The inquiry means that Congress, for a third time in four years, likely will be engulfed in an impeachment proceeding. Trump was impeached twice, in 2019 and 2021, when Democrats held the House, but he was acquitted in the Senate.
It didn’t take long for the White House to respond to the expected vote. Less than half an hour after the Republican win, Potus tried to flip the script.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) expressed her grave concerns about the potential consequences of a second presidential term for Donald Trump.
The daughter of former Republican vice president, Cheney believes that Trump would attempt to establish himself as a permanent president and refuse to leave office after the constitutionally mandated two-term limit, should he be reelected.
“There’s no question,” she told Today. “Absolutely. He’s already done it once. … He’s already attempted to seize power, and he was stopped, thankfully, and for the good of the nation and the republic. But he said he will do it again. He’s expressed no remorse for what he did.”
Cheney, a lifelong Republican who broke ranks with the party after she led the House of Representatives committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack, discussed the threat she sees to democracy in her new book, Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning.

Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) said that she would rather the 2024 presidential election be won by a Democratic candidate, calling members of her own party a “threat.”
In an interview with CBS, Cheney said, “I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party, but the Republican Party of today has made a choice and they haven’t chosen the Constitution, and so I do think it presents a threat if the Republicans are in the majority in January 2025.”
After she defied her party when she spoke out against former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Cheney, once the No. 3 leader of the House Republican Conference, was removed from her position and later lost her seat.
Her refusal to temper her criticisms of Trump in the weeks and months after the insurrection led to significant alienation from fellow party members.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that he will resign his congressional seat at the end of the year, bringing to an end an often tumultuous tenure in GOP leadership.
“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op ed that was published on Wednesday. “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
McCarthy was ousted as House speaker in October, after just 10 months, amid bitter divisions with members on the far right. He faced a decision on his future this week, the deadline for filing for reelection for his Bakersfield area congressional seat.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) revealed in her memoir Oath and Honor that after former president Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 reelection and departure from office in January 2021, he experienced a deep state of despair and was allegedly “not eating.”
This information was divulged to Cheney by the then-Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) when he attempted to justify his visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. McCarthy’s solidarity with the ex-president has been widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the revitalization of Trump’s political prospects.
McCarthy had strongly criticized Trump for his role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6 and even suggested that Trump resign.
However, McCarthy reversed his stance and effectively absolved the former president.
Cheney, known for her role as one of the most outspoken anti-Trump Republicans, recounted how McCarthy justified his visit on January 28 as an act of compassion towards a defeated ally.

Serial liar and alleged fraudster George Santos is no longer a member of Congress. The New York Republican was expelled from his office on Friday after a successful two-thirds majority vote to secure his ouster.
Of the 311 representatives who voted to remove Santos, 105 were members of his own party. Yet despite Santos’ track record as a liar, the criminal indictments against him, and the findings of a scathing House Ethics report exploring his alleged misconduct, some far-right Republicans are furious at the notion that a member of Congress can face repercussions for their actions.

As an afternoon guest at The New York Times‘ DealBook Summit, Vice President Kamala Harris took a swipe at former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s suggestion that President Joe Biden wasn’t really engaged in negotiations because of his advanced age.
Earlier on Wednesday, McCarthy suggested that Biden was not the same person he used to talk to, and that he read off of cards during negotiations during the debt ceiling crisis.
Of McCarthy, Harris said, “With all due respect, when anyone who has had the experience he has most recently had, I don’t think he’s a judge of negotiations.”
She added, “Age is more than a chronological fact. I spent a whole lot of time with our president, be it in the Oval Office or the Situation Room and in other places, and I can tell you … not only is he authoritative in rooms around the globe...

Updated, with additional reaction: Liz Cheney’s new book is a scathing portrait of Republican “enablers and collaborators” who are responsible for the continued hold that Donald Trump has on the party, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Cheney was ousted from Republican leadership as she continued to criticize Trump in the aftermath of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
