There are few American archetypes that are more enduring and iconic than that of cowboys in the Wild West. From pulp paperback novels to the silver screen, Westerns have been thrilling audiences worldwide for over a century, with that distinction also spreading to television shows. Westerns once dominated the television airwaves in the United States, with some of the longest-running shows in the medium's history coming from the genre. As a testament to their timeless appeal, Westerns have seen a resurgence of popularity recently.
As their ubiquity solidified, Westerns have expanded beyond their usual American Southwest period piece setting with grounded stakes. The genre has proven flexible enough to incorporate different global environments, time periods, even lacing in elements of the supernatural and science fiction. What are constants within the genre are people standing up in largely lawless and remote areas to defend themselves from those that would openly exploit them.

Deadline reported that production is now searching for a young girl aged between 9 and 11 to play Laura Ingalls, the lead role. The character description notes, "A plucky white female who questions authority and is 'honest to a fault.'" Casting calls have also been sent out to find those who will play Laura's family – Charles, Caroline, and Mary. Those interested will have until April 4 to submit an audition tape with a full-body shot.

Sometimes even the best television shows are victims of their own success, running longer than their natural story should at the expense of their overall quality. From will-they/won't-they romances fulfilled too quickly or the show trying to prolong its central conflicts and mysteries, popular shows try to artificially draw out their narratives to maintain audiences. This leaves even the most ardent fans of a given show acknowledging that there are lesser seasons missing the magic that made the series so successful. A perfect show knows when to call it quits before it overstays its welcome, but very few of them can take that hint.
Simply put, even many beloved shows just try to milk the last bit of success they can, even after enduring changes to their overarching plot or main cast. In doing so, the legacy of these prolonged series is a bit tarnished from their previous esteemed status.

There are a handful of book series that are geared towards girls and young women that have managed to really stand the test of time, like the always-fun "The Baby-Sitters Club," and one of the great classics, "Little House on the Prairie." The semi-autobiographical novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder followed her family as they made their lives on a tiny farmstead near Plum Creek and the town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota, from the 1870s through the 1890s. The beloved novels were turned into a TV movie and then a television series by NBC, starring Michael Landon as patriarch Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as his wife Caroline, Melissa Gilbert as middle daughter Laura, Melissa Sue Anderson as Laura's older sister Mary, and twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush as younger sister Carrie Ingalls. The series ran for nine seasons, from 1974 through 1983, giving audiences nearly a decade to get to know the Ingalls...

Like any child of the 1970s, I hear a certain TV theme and immediately visualize three little girls in prairie dresses frolicking down a hill as their ma and pa look on with amused expressions from their covered wagon. Of the many dramas that have come and gone throughout the history of television, very few have endured like “Little House on the Prairie.” Despite a slow start in ratings, families smartly caught on to the beauty of this series, and many made a tradition of gathering around the TV on Monday nights to take in a show that sometimes tackled modern-day issues in a long-ago setting, and other times told amusing homespun tales. At the height of its popularity, the series made mostly unknown actors household names and became an indelible piece of television history. Read on for more about the “Little House on the Prairie” 50th anniversary.

Even though the saga came to an end more than four decades ago, Little House on the Prairie remains one of the most beloved shows in television history. Loosely based upon the popular biographical book series by author Laura Ingalls Wilder (played by Melissa Gilbert), the show follows the adventures of the Ingalls family as they relocate to the small town of Walnut Grove. Set in 19th century America, the Ingalls, comprised of Laura, Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), Carrie (Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush), and led by parents Charles (Michael Landon) and Caroline (Karen Grassle) faced many hardships, which allowed the show to take on incredibly controversial topics.

Little House on the Prairie, the American Western historical drama TV series that ran for nine seasons from September 11, 1974, till March 21, 1983, may not be getting a reboot anytime soon, if ever, despite past reports about one being in development. The show focused on the Ingalls family, who live on a farm on Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, in the 1870s90s and starred Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as Caroline Ingalls, Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls, and twins Lindsay and Sydney Greenbush as Carrie Ingalls.

Karen Grassle and Melissa Sue Anderson think that making a new Little House on the Prairie without co-creator Michael Landon would be a challenge. The two stars praise his writing and casting, and his ability to translate modern issues into the show's storytelling. The success of shows like Yellowstone suggest a Little House on the Prairie reboot could work, but it may struggle to attract younger audiences.
Little House on the Prairie stars Karen Grassle and Melissa Sue Anderson explain why the series couldn't be rebooted today. First airing in 1974, Little House of the Prairie chronicles the daily life of the Ingalls family in the American Midwest during the nineteenth century. The show, which was co-created by Michael Landon, is based on the novels by writer Laura Ingalls Wilder, and ultimately came to an end in 1983. Reports surfaced in 2020 that a reboot was in development, but there's seemingly been little movement on the project.

Another day, another reboot announcement.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Little House on the Prairie is getting the update treatment.
A reboot is officially in development on a one-hour drama that would be based on Laura Wilder's beloved novels.
The new series would be co-produced by Paramount TV Studios, Anonymous Content, and Friendly Family Productions.
Details are scarce at this early stage, which is not uncommon for a project this early into development.
The book series was previously adapted into a TV series for NBC and starred Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert.
It was a roaring success and aired from 1974-83, having tremendous staying power.
TV movies followed the end of the original series, while ABC aired a miniseries based on the books in 2005.
The original series centered around the Ingalls Family, who live on a small farm near the village of Walnut Grove, Minn., in the late 1800s.

In 1974, TV audiences were introduced to the Ingalls family, a frontier clan living in a rustic cabin in the Minnesota wilderness during the 1870s and '80s. America was in the middle of its Me Decade, with an exhausting war and general upheaval at home. The weekly dramas of a farmer and his children—based on the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder—were an irresistible look at a simpler time when people based their lives around family, home, and church. (All nine seasons are available on Digital HD on Amazon; seasons 1–3 are also available on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate.

When EW reunited many members of Walnut Grove—Ingalls kids Laura (Melissa Gilbert), Mary (Melissa Anderson), Carrie (Lindsay Greenbush, who split the role with her twin sister, Sidney), and Albert (Matthew Laborteaux), along with town bully Nellie Oleson (Alison Arngrim), Laura's husband, Almanzo Wilder (Dean Butler), kindly schoolteacher Miss Beadle (Charlotte Stewart) and Ingalls matriarch Caroline (Karen Grassle)—memories of Landon were everywhere. We were big Little House on the Prairie fans growing up. As members of a large, close-knit family, we prided ourselves on being very similar to the Ingalls girls. Amy, the one with the long braids was Half-Pint, and Nancy, the one with the glasses, by default was Blind Mary. But deep down inside we had fantasies of being mean girls, like Nellie Oleson, just for one day.
We recently got a chance to speak to Nellie Olseon (known in real life as Alison Arngrim) about her new memoir, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson And Learned To Love Being Hated. In the current age of modern action series like Heroes, its hard to believe that a simple show like Little House on the Prairie was once a mainstay of the NBC Monday night schedule. The series ran for nine successful seasons on the peacock network and starred Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson and Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush. Landon was a co-executive producer of the series and directed many of the episodes.
Based loosely on the books by best-selling author Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), the series told the story of the pioneer Ingalls family and friends as they mad thie life in 1800s frontier Minnesota. One of the joys of the series was in watching young Melissa Gilbert as Laura grow through her early childhood into a mature teacher and mother. Now, 24 years after the series went off the air, Gilbert is returning to Little House on the Prairie.
