Richard Loncraine’s The Haunting of Julia is something of a film maudit. Adapted from Peter Straub’s first horror novel, the film was shot around London in late 1976 under the title Full Circle (as its title card still reads), then made the festival rounds throughout 1977, before barely being released in England in 1978. It belatedly turned up in the U.S. three years later, boasting the more genre-friendly title The Haunting of Julia but still failed to find much of an audience. A lot of this has to do with some significant stylistic differences between Loncraine’s film and the wave of slasher movies that dominated the horror market at the time: Above all, its unhurried pace and relatively restrained depiction of violence stand in stark contrast to the slasher’s relentless plotting and unfettered brutality.

With a long and successful career spanning genres, Mia Farrow may not be considered a horror icon, but she’s certainly deserving of the title in terms of quality over quantity. The two genre efforts in which she starred are exemplary horror movies of their respective eras; while Rosemary’s Baby has been widely lauded since its release in 1968 (Roman Polanski’s personal life controversies notwithstanding), The Haunting of Julia – known internationally as Full Circle – is a hidden gem ripe for rediscovery.
Based on Peter Straub’s 1975 novel Julia, the 1977 British film is directed by Richard Loncraine and written by Dave Humphries (Quadrophenia), with Xtro filmmaker Harry Bromley Davenport receiving a “based on an adaptation by” credit. Although ostensibly a haunted house tale, its ambiguity also allows it to be viewed as a dramatic character study. Scream Factory shines a well-needed light on the atmospheric chiller with a new 4K Uhd + Blu-ray edition.

Strike: Troubled Blood really is an extraordinarily fine crime drama, where a range of exceptional talents come together to create something that is actually greater than the sum of its very formidable parts. That is something rare and to be cherished. And indeed watched, and I can unreservedly commend this four-parter as a highlight of your festive viewing. It starts brilliantly, but gets better, and there are some surprising and compelling star performances to come.
It’s the latest adaptation, by Tom Edge, of the Strike detective works of Jk Rowling, and probably the best. Tom Burke is once again in the title role of Cormoran Strike, the gruff but clever private investigator. Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. And his affection and respect for his resourceful business partner, Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) always threatens, or promises,...

Bryan ("So Much Unfairness of Things") The wonderful cast includes Sam Waterston ("The Killing Fields"), Timothy Hutton ("Ordinary People") and David Keith ("An Officer and a Gentleman"). "The Elephant Man " (1982 TV Movie )
Director: Jack Hofsiss
Cast: Philip Anglim, Kevin Conwak, Glenn Clsoe
The story of John Merrick (Philip Anglim), The Elephant Man, and of his triumph over his terrible affliction. It is a story of life and the affirmation of life; timeless, tragic, uplifting and heroic; an exultation of the humanity of a man trapped inside the twisted, lesion-ridden grip of a terminally disfiguring disease. We see John Merrick as a man with many admirers, beginning with the witty and beautiful actress, Mrs. Kendal (Penny Fuller), who, so taken with Merrick, brought a who's who of English society to visit him regularly. The stellar cast includes Glenn Close as Princess Alexandra and Kevin Conway. Directed by DGA nominee Jack Hofsiss (1984 TV Movie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). Winner of 1 Emmy Award® for Best Supporting Actress (Fuller) and nominated for 3 more including Best Actor, Philip Anglim who also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Made for TV Motion Picture.

In the last month, Sherlock, the BBC’s hugely successful reinvention of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, hit our screens for a third run proving that even though Holmes was created nearly 130 years ago, the character can still be used in thrilling new ways. Nowadays alone, Sherlock is accompanied by Sherlock Holmes action films, courtesy of Guy Ritchie, and, in CBS’ Elementary, a Sherlock Holmes police procedural set in contemporary New York. Plus, there’s an upcoming film starring Sir Ian McKellen as an elderly version of the Great Detective.
However, this is just the tip of the deerstalker hat. There have been many imaginative, off-the-wall and just downright weird versions of Sherlock Holmes and his friends and foes over the years and across film and television.
Now, let’s peer through the pea-souper fog and have a look at eight other alternative Sherlock Holmes adaptations…

Fun adventure with a schoolboy Sherlock (Nicholas Rowe) hot on the trail of a strange Egyptian cult, who kill anyone that gets in their way. Alan Cox plays the young Dr Watson and Sophie Ward is Elizabeth Hardy. Produced by Steven Spielberg, this was the first film to feature an entirely computer-generated character - a knight who evolves from a stained-glass window.

Actors' union Equity enlists famous names, including Antony Sher, to support gay actors who choose to be open
When Antony Sher started acting with the pioneering Gay Sweatshop theatre company in the 70s, he managed to stay in the closet. "I look back and blush," he said. "We all agreed to do it on the basis that it was stated that not all the performers were gay so you didn't know who was and who wasn't.
"Then, in the mid-80s, when I did the British premiere of Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy, I still wasn't out. I was doing press interviews about this great gay play that I felt so strongly about for a specific reason and I wasn't saying it – it was an astonishing waste of energy. But that's the kind of tangle you get into if you're not out."

In 2009 the ex Mr Madonna (otherwise known as Guy Ritchie) called upon the unlikely pairing of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law to bring back to the screen two of crime fiction’s greatest heroes – Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.
The pair are up there amongst the most filmed literary characters, Holmes has been sticking his nose into other people’s business since the earliest days of the cinema with one of the first versions being a Danish short from 1908 pitting him against his arch nemesis Moriarty and Raffles, the Victorian gentleman thief – now that really would have been a showdown worth seeing.
So, as Ritchie prepares to throw Downey and Law together again, we decided to do some sleuthing ourselves and find six of the pipe smoking detective’s best screen adventures. The results have proved anything but elementary!

The opening scene of the Clive Barker film Book Of Blood (out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Lightning) packs a punch as a young woman is assaulted by unseen forces, climaxing with a rather gruesome effect in which her face is torn away. We are then introduced to Simon McNeal (Jonas Armstrong), a young college student and medium whose body has been ravaged and become a literal book of blood.
The story is thus set in motion as Simon recalls the events that led him to his current predicament. As the flashback begins, the focus shifts to paranormal investigator and college professor Mary Florescu (Sophie Ward), who’s haunted by an incident that occurred during her childhood. Mary’s path crosses with that of Simon, who suffers from his own childhood demons. She enlists his aide and, with the help of paranormal technician Reg Fuller (Paul Blair), they...

tweetmeme_url='http://www.beyondhollywood.com/a-clip-from-clive-barkers-book-of-blood-highways/'; tweetmeme_style = 'normal';; An original director’s cut version of Clive Barker’s “Book of Blood” is landing on DVD shelves everywhere from Lightning Home Entertainment and Lionsgate Home Entertainment on September 22nd. The film is directed by John Harrison and stars Sophie Ward and Jonas Armstrong, and from what I’ve seen, it’s classic Barker. Check out a clip called “Highways” from the movie below. When a paranormal expert (Ward) recruits “medium” Simon McNeal (Armstrong) to investigate a supposedly haunted house, Simon winds up as a conduit for souls on their way to the afterlife –who carve their stories on his body as a living book of blood. Based on the short stories “The Book of Blood” and “On Jerusalem Street”, Book Of Blood is the latest on-screen adaptation of Mr. Barker’s works. “Book of Blood” the original director...

When Julia (Mia Farrow) Lofting witnesses her daughter Kate (Sophie Ward) choke to death at the kitchen table, her mental stability (as should be expected) shatters. Plagued by depression and a nasty case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Julia leaves her husband Magnus (Keir Dullea), and attempts to build a new life on her own, in a new location. But Julia’s new residence is no safe haven, and she soon discovers that the peace she seeks is very far from “home”, for these new corridors harbor an old, malicious spirit, and few who come in contact with this entity live to tell about it.
An eerie film in just about every sense imaginable, The Haunting Of Julia (which was originally released as Full Circle) packs a load of chills despite a slow start and overall conservative approach to Peter Straub’s original novel “Julia” (which served as the films source...

John Harrison's adaptation of Clive Barker's Book of Blood got itself a drippy new red band trailer today that's sporting quite a bit of squishy stuff. We like.
In Book of Blood paranormal researcher Mary Florescu's investigations lead her to Simon McNeal, a college student who appears to be channeling messages from the dead. As their erotic relationship develops, the line between the worlds of the living and the dead become blurred and finally collapse in a stunning and astonishing climax.
The film, which stars Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, Doug Bradley, Simon Bamford, and Paul Blair, hits DVD and Blu-Ray on September 22.

Reading through Clive Barker's Books of Blood was some of the most fun I've ever had with the genre. Sure, not every story was a winner, but the sheer imagination on display was astonishing. With director John Harrison having lensed two stories for an anthology film, I had some hope of seeing the adaptation hit the multiplexes.

After your favorable response to our first article on the subject, we decided to take another look at the (often) behind-the-scenes women who love and support the higher-profile women in their life.
Most of them are not yet as well known as Portia De Rossi (wife of Ellen DeGeneres) or Tammy Lynn Michaels (partner of Melissa Etheridge), but we thought you'd like to get to know a little more about them.
Melanie Goldstein (fiancée of actor Kirsten Vangsness)
Just this week, Kirsten Vangsness, the out star of the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, announced her engagement to longtime girlfriend Melanie Goldstein, an assistant editor on Fox tv show 24.
Goldstein proposed to Vangsness in November, but the couple only recently shared the news with family and friends.

**Please Note: This will be at the top for a while; be sure to scroll down for updated news stories!** Horror may currently be in a slump, but the 2008 American Film Market has shown a huge light at the end of the tunnel. This year showcased a record number of horror titles and Dread Central was on hand to catch a great deal of them. Some were good, some were bad but all showed that this genre still has plenty of lifeblood left. Many exhibitors were also kind enough to show us movie promos, while others coldly showed us the door (Lesbian Vampire Killers, I’m looking at you). The most promising show previews were easily Night of the Demons and Clive Barker’s Dread, with plenty of new projects being announced. Check out our full Afm '08 coverage here.

So maybe Midnight Meat Train didn't get the reception that Clive Barker had hoped for, but that hasn't stopped the master of horror from rolling right along with his other projects. A new trailer for Book of Blood (the first in Barker's six part series) has just hit the net. Unfortunately, the trailer has since disappeared from most sites, so if you are curious, I'd advise you to act fast. But the good news is that Dreadcentral.com now has a promo reel for Barker's other adaption from his Books of Blood series, titled, Dread.
So first up is the trailer for Blood, and I have to tell you, it is looking pretty good (not to mention gory) for the horror tale. Blood was the frame story for Barker's original series, and the film will center on "on a paranormal expert who, while investigating a gruesome slaying, finds a house...
