“Oppenheimer” is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations. That’s one shy of the all-time record of 14 nominations so it missed out on Oscars history in the nomination phase.
However, Universal’s movie could match Academy Awards history in the awards phase by equalling the record of 11 Oscar wins overall. So far, three films have won 11 Academy Awards. They were “Ben-Hur” in 1960, “Titanic” in 1998, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Here’s the breakdown of what awards they won.
“Ben-Hur”

“May December,” the newest acclaimed drama film from Todd Haynes, is now available to stream on Netflix, and one of the film’s stars, Julianne Moore, is already an early favorite to receive a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her spellbinding performance. Let’s look back at her five Academy Award races and talk about why Moore finally won her first gold trophy in 2015 for “Still Alice” (2014).
Her first Oscar nomination came in 1998 in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Boogie Nights” (1997). Moore’s only Academy Award nom of the 1990s put her up against Joan Cusack for “In & Out,” Minnie Driver for “Good Will Hunting,” Gloria Stuart for “Titanic” and Kim Basinger for “L.A. Confidential.” Moore didn’t have a chance that first time around because Basinger dominated the category all season, her beloved film often showing up in the Best Picture and Best Director categories,...

Kim Basinger is the blonde bombshell has certainly proved her bonafides as an actress, quickly going from sex symbol to respected Oscar winner. Let’s take a look back at 10 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1953 in Athens, Georgia, Basinger got her start as a model before turning to acting, catching the attentions of movie audiences as a Bond girl in the Sean Connery-starring “Never Say Never Again” (1983). She earned her first Golden Globe nomination soon thereafter for a supporting performance as Robert Redford‘s love interest in “The Natural” (1984).
She courted controversy with her sexually explicit turn in Adrien Lyne‘s “9 1/2 Weeks” (1986) and became a box office draw with Tim Burton‘s superhero smash “Batman” (1989). She even proved she could poke fun at herself with a cameo appearance in “Wayne’s World 2” (1992) as the aptly-named Honey Horneé.
It was with Curtis Hanson‘s neo-noir masterpiece “L.

Just two years after Anita of “West Side Story” became the first non-white fictional character to inspire multiple Academy Award nominations, three others are on their way to earning the same distinction. As was the case in 1986, 30% of 2024’s female acting Oscar slots could be filled by stars of “The Color Purple,” the new version of which serves as an adaptation of the similarly titled stage musical rather than Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. If Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson all reap bids for their fresh takes on the parts for which Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Margaret Avery were previously recognized, the overall list of doubly Oscar-nominated fictional characters will expand to include 20 examples.
In “The Color Purple,” Barrino executes the lead role of Celie Johnson, who she initially played on Broadway as a direct successor to 2006 Tony-winning originator Lachanze. As in the book and first film,...

Here’s a fun fact that Hollywood actors hate to admit… people get older.
In a reaction to the natural progression of life, Hollywood has engaged in de-aging effects for older actors to play younger versions of their characters, whether in franchises or standalone films — such as Robert DeNiro in “The Irishman,” Samuel L. Jackson in “Captain Marvel” and most recently, Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Like most new technology that comes into the industry, it takes some getting used to. However, with more than two dozen high-profile experiments thus far, the misfires greatly outweigh the successes. De-aging effects in Hollywood still need to be fine-tuned, and Hollywood should only use them once we can perfect the technique.
A primary concern is that while these effects are visually impressive, they fall short of replicating the natural appearance of a younger self. In addition, it can...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”), Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”), Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our odds currently show Quan (31/10) triumphing, followed in order of likelihood by Gleeson (4/1), Keoghan (4/1), Hirsch (9/2), and Henry (9/2).
Hirsch is the only returning nominee among the five, as he was previously recognized for his featured turn in “Ordinary People” in 1981. He is the 74th man to earn at least two supporting notices and the sixth to be added to that list in the last five years after Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, and J. K. Simmons. The 42-year gap between his first and second bids is the largest for any performer across any of the lead or supporting categories. When James Cameron set out to make his historical romantic disaster epic, "Titanic," he was taking a massive financial and creative risk. Not only was the film the most expensive ever made at that time, but Cameron's name was more affiliated with genre blockbusters like "The Terminator" or "Aliens," not the kind of movies that would make legions of moms cry in the theater. As has been proven time and time again, one should never bet against James Cameron, who from "Titanic" onward has exclusively directed the highest-grossing films in history.
The success of a film like "Titanic" is the result of thousands of decisions, like casting, costuming, special effects, editing, and most importantly, screenwriting. "Titanic" is considered by many to be one of the best films of all time, and is currently tied for winning the most ever Academy Awards. But before "Titanic" shipped into theaters and changed the cinematic landscape forever,...

Nearly 30 years after she was part of the inaugural class of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees with her supporting bid for 1994’s “True Lies,” Jamie Lee Curtis, who lost back then to Dianne Wiest (“Bullets Over Broadway”), finally has not one but two more shots at being honored by the acting guild. Her individual and ensemble notices for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” come nearly five decades into her prolific career and could lead to a record-breaking dual achievement. If the 64-year-old succeeds on both bids, she will be the oldest performer to win two SAG Awards for a single film.
Of the four women challenging Curtis in the supporting category, only Hong Chau (“The Whale”) has vied for the same prize before. She was part of the 2017 lineup for “Downsizing” but lost that race to Allison Janney. Also in the running are general first-timer Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin...

In the entire history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, only Ian McKellen (as Gandalf) has accomplished the feat of winning twice for playing a single character in multiple films. After nearly two decades, the supporting actor (2001’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”) and ensemble (2003’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”) victor might soon be joined in this distinction by current supporting actress nominee Angela Bassett. Her “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” bid is her first individual film one from the guild and comes four years after she was honored as a member of the original “Black Panther” cast.
Bassett is now a four-time SAG Award nominee, having been recognized for her performances in the TV movies “Ruby’s Bucket of Blood” (2001) and “Betty and Coretta” (2013). Her supporting actress competition includes Hong Chau (“The Whale”) and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once...

"I believe in the theatrical experience." Paramount Pictures has debuted a new featurette for the 2023 re-release of Titanic, James Cameron's epic romantic tale of the sinking of the Rms Titanic. "Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the timeless love story this Valentine's Day Weekend." This is opening on the big screen again in 4K 3D (along with Hfr screenings) and will play throughout February. This video focuses on the cast and filmmakers reflecting on making Titanic now 25 years later, to compliment the re-release trailer. With a cast headed by Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the "unsinkable" Titanic, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. Also starring Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton, and Gloria Stuart. This featurette is way too short, more of a slapdash promo plus a reminder this is (re-)opening soon.

In addition “Braveheart” (1995), “Gangs of New York” (2002) and three “Harry Potter” movies, Brendan Gleeson’s acting resume include several collaborations each with filmmaking brothers John Michael and Martin McDonagh. His and the latter writer-director’s third project, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” has led to his very first Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for both supporting actor and ensemble. Now well into the fourth decade of his career, the sexagenarian could make history as the oldest performer to win two SAG trophies for a single film.

By amassing hundreds of film and TV credits over the past seven decades, James Hong has cemented himself as an indelible figure in the history of screen entertainment. Having just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last May, the 93-year-old is now reaping the benefits of taking on one of his most high-profile roles yet in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” His inclusion in the movie’s ensemble is expected to lead to his first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which would make him the oldest film performer ever recognized by the organization.

James Cameron, who won the Best Director Oscar for 1997’s Titanic, is apologizing for his infamous “I’m the king of the world!” speech given at the 70th Academy Awards, calling it “cringeworthy.”
James Cameron said of his Oscar moment, “I was trying to express the joy and excitement that I was feeling in terms of that movie, and the most joyful moment for the character.” At least he didn’t try to do a sketch of the naked Oscar statue.
Continuing his reflection on that Oscar speech, James Cameron said, “What I learned is, you don’t quote your own movie if you win…Because it’s cringeworthy. It makes the assumption that you didn’t win by a narrow margin but that every single person sitting in the audience on that night at the Kodak Theatre saw and loved Titanic. It was lightning in a bottle.
The 70th Academy Awards in 1998 served as a high-water mark for the annual telecast that the Oscars have struggled to match for over two decades. And it wasn’t only because of the “king of the world” moment.
With an estimated 87.5 million viewers tuning in for part or all of the awards (57 million reported by Nielsen on ABC), the ceremony saw the massively popular “Titanic” win 11 Oscars, including best picture; it was one of those rare moments where a populist favorite was also an awards season darling. But there are other reasons to look back at that ceremony with a mixture of appreciation and sadness – and at least some wistfulness for how the movie business operated at its peak, a pinnacle it may never reach again. With a balance of box office sensations and arthouse hits, there was something for everyone at the Shrine Auditorium that evening.

A likelihood going into the 2023 awards season is that James Cameron will receive at least one Academy Award nomination for “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s Oscar-winning blockbuster, “Avatar.” Critics have been raving about the film ahead of its December 16 debut, with Bilge Ebiri of Vulture saying it “might be James Cameron’s sweetest, gentlest, most personal film,” and David Ehrlich of IndieWire calling it “easily one of the best theatrical experiences in ages.” So which categories will he be nominated in? There’s lots to choose from, after all, with Cameron serving as the director, co-writer, co-producer and co-editor of 20th Century Studios’ sequel. Since he is likely to be a major player in the upcoming awards season, let’s look back at James Cameron’s six previous Oscar races, three for “Titanic” (1997) and three for “Avatar” (2009), and then discuss where he stands for his latest three-hour blockbuster.

Forty-two years after receiving his only film acting Golden Globe nomination for “Ordinary People,” Judd Hirsch is back in the Best Supporting Actor conversation thanks to his brief yet powerful performance as Uncle Boris Schildkraut in “The Fabelmans.” If the 87-year-old does earn his overall ninth Golden Globe notice for his work in the Steven Spielberg film, he will be the third oldest performer ever recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which would put him one step away from making history as the oldest acting Golden Globe winner of all time.
The current record for oldest acting Golden Globe champion has been held since 1989 by John Gielgud. The two-time HFPA honoree was 84 years old when he won Best TV Supporting Actor for the limited series “War and Remembrance.” The only actors older than Hirsch who have ever contended in any Golden Globe category are Ernest Borgnine and Christopher Plummer.

In the midst of the 1997 fall movie season, “Boogie Nights” came out of nowhere to be one of the most acclaimed and talked-about films of the year. The biggest name in its ensemble cast was Burt Reynolds, who hadn’t been in a hit film or television series in years. The movie was directed by the virtually unknown Paul Thomas Anderson, whose sole credit “Hard Eight” had been essentially dumped into theaters the previous February. And a narrative about the rise and fall of a porn start that ran a long two-and-a-half hours didn’t exactly seem like a slam dunk production for critics or at the box office.
However, the film premiered to a wave of enthusiasm at the Toronto Film Festival and critical raves upon its limited release in October 1997. And the rest is now history. Read on for our appreciation of the “Boogie Nights” 25th anniversary.

Welcome back to the Supporting Actress Smackdown.
In this monthly series we pick an Oscar vintage to explore through the lens of actressing at the edges. This episode takes us back 25 years to the landmark year of 1997 when Titanic and "Matt & Ben" were all rage.
The Nominees
Aside from an encore showing for comedic genius Joan Cusack, a surprise nominee in 1988 for Working Girl, the Academy went with all first-timers for 1997's Supporting Actress roster. Not that the actresses were "new" to the scene. There were two "comeback" narratives: Kim Basinger had been a leading lady for over a decade before LA Confidential but she'd taken a three year break from the movies (amidst multiple financial and legal troubles). Meanwhile Gloria Stuart who began in the early days of sound cinema was being celebrated in a way she hadn't been since 1932. The "breakthrough" nominations, were also two-fold. One went to Minnie Driver.

We first see Gloria Stuart 11 minutes into Titanic (1997). The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Judi Dench (“Belfast”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), and Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”). Our odds currently indicate that DeBose (31/10) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Dunst (39/10), Ellis (9/2), Buckley (9/2), and Dench (9/2).
Dench is the only previous nominee among the five, having amassed three supporting and five lead bids during her career. She is now one of 25 women with as many featured notices and could follow Shelley Winters and Dianne Wiest by becoming the category’s third dual champion, since she already took the gold for “Shakespeare in Love” (1999). Her second supporting nomination came for “Chocolat” (2001), and she earned her lead ones for “Mrs. Brown” (1998), “Iris” (2002), “Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2006), “Notes on a Scandal” (2007), and “Philomena” (2014).

Over the last decade, Oscar voters have demonstrated distinct favoritism toward lengthier supporting male performances but have typically chosen shorter female ones. While most recent Best Supporting Actor-winning roles are arguably worthy of lead placement, the vast majority of the last decade’s Best Supporting Actress champs have prevailed for playing unequivocally featured characters who influence the arcs of their respective leads.
Last year, Youn Yuh-jung triumphed in the female category for her performance in “Minari,” which amounts to 26 minutes and two seconds of screen time, or 22.60% of the film. As a Korean grandmother who comes to live with her daughter’s family in America, she was the fourth actress in as many years to win the award for a relatively short maternal role. Those who preceded her were Allison Janney, Regina King, and Laura Dern.

In 1998, 63-year-old Judi Dench earned her first Oscar nomination for her performance in “Mrs. Brown,” which made her the fifth oldest first-time Best Actress contender up to that point. That same year, 87-year-old supporting hopeful Gloria Stuart (“Titanic”) set a still-intact oldest female nominee record that Dench just came within 161 days of breaking by landing a featured bid this year for “Belfast.”
This marks Dench’s eighth career nomination, which makes her one of the six most-recognized actresses in Oscars history alongside Glenn Close and Geraldine Page and behind Meryl Streep (21), Katharine Hepburn (12), and Bette Davis (11).
In terms of screen time, her average for her three nominated featured roles is 11 minutes and seven seconds (or 10.05% of the respective films). Her five nominated lead performances average out to 48 minutes and 53 seconds (or 50.33%). Check out our gallery and screen time analysis of Dench’s eight Oscar-nominated performances.

Ariana DeBose is the frontrunner in Best Supporting Actress at the SAG Awards for her scene-stealing work in “West Side Story,” but could one factor signal stronger support for one of her competitors? At the SAG Awards, only one Supporting Actress nominee earned an additional bid with her cast in th ensemble category: Caitriona Balfe for “Belfast.” Cate Blanchett is also contending in both categories, but for two different films — “Nightmare Alley” in Supporting Actress and “Don’t Look Up” in ensemble. Could this spell trouble for DeBose?
See: SAG Awards nominated supporting actresses: Caitriona Balfe, Cate Blanchett, Ariana DeBose …
SAG Awards history suggests that having that ensemble nomination on top of an individual bid sure helps out in Supporting Actress. From the last 26 years of SAG Awards, 17 Supporting Actress winners were also up for the top ensemble category with their respective casts. That stat includes a tie in 1998, where winners Kim Basinger (“L.

When the 2021 Oscars ended with Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor for his role in “The Father,” the upset victory made history. Hopkins, at age 83 when he unexpectedly topped Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category, became the oldest person to ever win an acting Oscar. But Hopkins isn’t the oldest Oscar winner ever.
Who is the oldest Oscar winner?
While Hopkins is the oldest actor to win a competitive Oscar, the oldest Oscar winner is actually screenwriter James Ivory. At the 2018 Oscars, Ivory, then age 89, won Best Adapted Screenplay with writer and director Luca Guadagnino for the adaptation of “Call Me By Your Name.” Ivory’s victory moved him ahead of composer Ennio Morricone, who was previously the oldest Oscar winner ever after he received an Academy Award at the 2016 ceremony for his score to “The Hateful Eight.” Morricone was 87 at the time of his win.

Four Grammy Awards. Five American Music Awards. Multiple MTV Movie and Video Music Awards. Can Will Smith add a Screen Actors Guild Award to his trophy collection?
Note that I’m not talking about the Oscar here. I’m specifically focused on his individual SAG Award bid. And yes, Mr. Smith should plan to make a little room for a new piece of Hollywood hardware. Here are five reasons why he’ll win the Best Actor SAG Award for Warner Bros’ “King Richard.”

Streamers, jaw-droppers, Princess Diana and heartbroken Little Monsters sum up the 2022 Oscar nominations.
It’s unclear what was more shocking — the snub of Lady Gaga or the over-performance of Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog,” which has put the streaming giant in the best position to nab its first best picture trophy, something its been seeking for years.
For the second year in a row, the best actress is completely wide open and turned upside down, even more than last year’s race that had a different winner at all the televised award ceremonies. This year, only Gaga’s turn in “House of Gucci” was nominated at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globes and SAG Awards, leaving many to assume that she would be walking away with her first acting Oscar. For the first time in history, no BAFTA nominees for lead actress are nominated at the Oscars. The...

It’s rare for two performers to receive Oscar nominations for playing the same character in the same film. So rare, in fact, that prior to this year, the feat had only happened when Kate Winslet was involved. But thanks to “The Lost Daughter” and its 2022 Oscar nominations for Olivia Colman and Jesse Buckley, history was made on Tuesday in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories.
“The Lost Daughter” stars both Colman and Buckley as a woman named Leda Caruso — Colman plays the character in the present day, Buckley handles the flashbacks — whose world is undone by her complicated feelings on motherhood and marriage. Buzz for both performances built for literal months before Tuesday’s Oscar nominations announcement, with Colman landing significant precursor support from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards, while Buckley was among the nominees at the BAFTA Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards,...

The prospect of Olivia Colman at least scoring an Oscar nomination for “The Lost Daughter” is all but assured. The 2019 winner for “The Favourite” is now garnering raves for her new role as a misanthropic writer who reflects on her parental shortcomings while vacationing in Greece. She has risen to the top of our combined odds ranking.
If Colman does make it into her third Oscar lineup in four years as expected, there is a strong chance that her castmate, Jessie Buckley, will be able to celebrate hearing her own name on Oscar nominations morning as well. Buckley’s performance as a younger version of Colman’s character ranks in the top 10 in our Best Supporting Actress ranking. She has already appeared in one Best Actress-winning film and could be ushered into the next supporting female lineup thanks in large part to her film’s accomplished lead.

After nine decades of Academy Awards ceremonies, the most Oscars won by a film is still 11. That long-held record is shared by three iconic movies: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Titanic” (1997) and “Ben-Hur” (1959). Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see the 15 films that won the most competitive Oscars throughout history.
The third “The Lord of the Rings” movie went undefeated at the Oscars, going 11-for-11. It took home prizes for picture, director (Peter Jackson), adapted screenplay, art direction, costume design, film editing, makeup, score, song (“Into the West”), sound mixing and visual effects. The plot centers around Gandalf and Aragorn leading the World of Men against Sauron’s army in order to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.

The Best Supporting Actress awards were first handed out at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1937, and in the nearly 85 years since, 83 women have received this honor. Only two have won multiple Oscars in this category: Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters. The great character actress Thelma Ritter holds the record number of nominations in this category with six, sadly without a win, while Amy Adams has had five bids in supporting (one in lead), also without a win.
This is a category that often sees first nominations, many times recognizing ingenues who go on to earn multiples nominations throughout their careers. The youngest acting winner of all time was a Best Supporting Actress recipient: 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won for “Paper Moon” in 1974. The cast of Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” including Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench, will follow young Jude Hill’s lead on the road to the Academy Awards. Variety has learned exclusively that Focus Features will campaign Hill for lead actor consideration during the awards season, with the rest of the cast going for supporting recognition.
Balfe and Dornan’s category submissions have been a question mark since the film’s debut at Telluride, riding the line between leading and supporting characters. Balfe, in many ways, has the more accessible and resonating role of the cast. Aside from delivering a beautifully orchestrated turn, it can easily be packaged with all the “Oscar clip” bells and whistles that you see in award-winning contenders. Yuh-Jung Youn, a legendary actress in her native Korea, made history in the U.S. on Sunday when she became the third oldest Best Supporting Actress winner in Oscars history, winning for her performance as Soon-ja, the scene-stealing grandmother in the six-time Academy Award-nominated film “Minari,” which tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they attempt to start a farm in rural Arkansas in the 1980s.
At 73 years and 310 days old, Youn, who’s made headlines in recent months for her candid but always delightful acceptance speeches, now sits behind Josephine Hull, who was 74 years and 85 days old when she won for “Harvey” (1950). Both women trail Peggy Ashcroft by a few years; she was 77 years and 93 days old when she won for “A Passage to India” (1984), making her the oldest supporting actress winner. Of course, the oldest nominee in the category remains “Titanic” (1997) star Gloria Stuart, who was...

There is no doubt about it: Yuh-Jung Youn is having a great year. The legendary Korean actress has already received a Screen Actors Guild Award and the corresponding BAFTA Award for her supporting role as Soon-ja, the scene-stealing grandmother in the six-time Academy Award-nominated film “Minari,” which tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they attempt to start a farm in rural Arkansas in the 1980s. Should she win the supporting actress Oscar on April 25, she’ll become the third oldest winner in the category.
Youn will be 73 years and 310 days old on the date of the Oscars. This would put her behind Josephine Hull, who was 74 years and 85 days old when she won for “Harvey” (1950). Both women would then trail Peggy Ashcroft, who won for “A Passage to India” (1984) at the age of 77 years and 93 days old, making her the oldest supporting actress winner. (The oldest nominee...

Going into this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, many of our Experts predicted Carey Mulligan to be named best film actress for “Promising Young Woman.” However, Viola Davis ended up pulling off an upset in that category for her performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” So with that surprise, plus Mulligan’s win at Critics Choice and Andra Day‘s victory at the Golden Globes for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” what does that mean moving forward in the Oscar race?
See‘Minari’ Oscar upset for Best Picture still possible: It’s beginning to look a lot like ‘Moonlight’
For now I wouldn’t take Davis’s SAG win too much into account, and there are several reasons. First, the Screen Actors Guild loves her as she has won all of her individual nominations there with the exception of “Doubt” (2008). In addition, that group rarely predicts the exact...

The Screen Actors Guild Awards have one of the best track records with the four Oscar acting categories: SAG has only mismatched five times in Best Actor, seven times in Best Actress, nine times in Best Supporting Actor and eight times in Best Supporting Actress. That’s pretty good news for SAG champs Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom“), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). But while SAG matches up with Oscar a lot in the categories individually, it has comparatively less success batting 1000 in all four categories in one year.
In its 26-year history, SAG has directly matched 4/4 with Oscar only eight times, most recently last year with sweepers Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”). That was the second season with a complete 20/20 acting sweep of the Golden Globe,...
