While iconic shows like The Golden Girls and Cheers undoubtedly made television history, they're part of a larger wave of comedies that helped propel the sitcom format into new territory.

For decades, sitcoms like I Love Lucy, Good Times, and The Brady Bunch centered on the concept of family. There were some exceptions, but these shows, like Dream of Jeannie or Gilligan's Island, were often built around a gimmick. The 80s changed that, opening windows to a plethora of different environments. The sitcoms of the era explored the relationships between coworkers, neighbors, and friends. On top of this, they eschewed flashy premises, putting faith in sharp writing and well-rounded characters.

Facts of Life alum Mindy Cohn said a reboot of the hit 1980s sitcom was in the early stages of development before one of her “greedy b***h” co-stars ruined it by going behind their backs. Appearing on SiriusXM’s Jeff Lewis Live on Wednesday (July 24), Cohn, who played Natalie Green on the popular NBC comedy, said they were talks about a revival during Covid, but things fell apart when “One of the girls went behind our backs to try to make a separate deal for a spinoff deal just for herself.” “We got into talks, and we hired a writer. The four of us [Cohn, Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields, and Nancy McKeon] got together on a Zoom — this was during Covid — and we had meetings with Norman [Lear] about it,” she explained. However, after one of the cast members went behind their backs, the whole idea ended up in the trash.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have: “The Facts of Life.” But there’s no bad, only good — no, make that great — casting here for next week’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” remake of the classic 1980s sitcom.

Joining the previously announced Ann Dowd (as Edna Garrett) will be Jennifer Aniston as Blair, Gabrielle Union as Tootie, Allison Tolman as Natalie and Kathryn Hahn as Jo.

For the third installment of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” executive producers Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel are pairing the iconic late 1970s/early 1980s comedy “Diff’rent Strokes” with its spinoff, “The Facts of Life.” Both series came from Lear’s production companies during that era, Tandem Productions (originally founded by Lear and Bud Yorkin in 1958) and T.A.T. Communications, which were later folded into Embassy Communications.

ABC has pulled back the curtain on the third installment of its Live in Front of a Studio Audience franchise. Jimmy Kimmel announced on his late-night show Thursday that the 90-minute special will re-create episodes of comedies Diff’rent Strokes and its spinoff The Facts of Life.

The live event will air at from 8-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 7.

The cast for the Diff’rent Strokes re-do is intriguing: John Lithgow will play Mr. Drummond, Kevin Hart is Arnold, Damon Wayans embodies Willis, and Ann Dowd portrays Mrs. Garrett. The Facts of Life cast is Tba.

“Alice” star Philip McKeon has died at the age of 55, according to a representative.

McKeon died on Tuesday after a long battle with an unspecified illness.

“We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing,” family spokesperson Jeff Ballard said in a statement. “His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”

McKeon, who was the older brother of “Facts of Life” star Nancy McKeon, was best known for co-starring alongside Linda Lavin in the CBS comedy “Alice,” from 1976 to 1985. He went on to make appearances on shows including “CHiPs,” “Fantasy Island” and “The Love Boat.”...

Philip McKeon, known for playing the son of Linda Lavin’s titular character in the classic CBS sitcom “Alice,” has died. He was 55.

The actor died Tuesday morning in Texas following a longtime illness, family spokesman Jeff Ballard confirmed to Variety.

“We are all beyond heartbroken and devasted over Phil’s passing,” said Ballard. “His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”

McKeon played the role of Tommy Hyatt on “Alice” from 1976 to 1985. Following that, he appeared in several other TV shows including the NBC crime drama “CHiPs,” and a pair of ABC series, “Fantasy Island” and “The Love Boat,” in 1984. On the film side, McKeon appeared mostly in horror pics, among them “Return to Horror High” and “Ghoulies 4.”

Lifetime's You Light Up My Christmas reunites Tootie, Natalie, Blair, and Jo from The Facts of Life. It's the first time that Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Lisa Whelchel, and Nancy McKeon have all been on screen together since 1988. The hit series started as a spin-off from Diff'rent Strokes in 1979 and ran until 1988, making it one of the longest-running sitcoms of the 1980s. Gold Derby can confirm that the first two celebrities were scheduled to be revealed on “Good Morning America” on Monday, Aug. 5, but the announcement was indefinitely postponed in light of the tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend. Fifteen pros have won “Dancing with the Stars” through 26 seasons, one of them being Witney Carson. The Season 19 champ, with Alfonso Ribeiro, is back in the final with Milo Manheim, putting her one step closer to becoming just the eighth pro to claim multiple Mirrorball trophies.

Of the 15, seven pros have won “Dancing” more than once. The undisputed king of “Dancing” is Derek Hough, who has won a record six times, including going back-to-back twice. The exodus of women on “Dancing with the Stars” this season hasn’t gone unnoticed by the contestants. “Crap. That’s what I make of that. Crap. It’s just crap. All I’m gonna say. I think it’s horse crap,” Bobby Bones told “Entertainment Tonight” of the all-female eliminations (watch above).

Nikki Glaser, Danielle Umstead, Nancy McKeon and Tinashe have been the casualties so far, and all except for Tinashe were in the all-female bottom five the first week. The bleeding stopped on Monday, but only because it was a non-elimination, so the unfortunate streak could continue next week if Evanna Lynch, Alexis Ren or Mary Lou Retton goes home. There has never been five straight eliminations of the same gender in the show’s history.

The slaughtering of female contestants on “Dancing with the Stars” this season continued on Monday, but it wasn’t Mary Lou Retton or Alexis Ren — the remaining two women who were in the bottom five the first week — who went home like we had feared. Instead, it was Tinashe, one of the best dancers and top scorers this season, and her partner Brandon Armstrong who got the boot, giving us our first shocking elimination of the season. How did this happen? Besides, you know, Bachelor Nation. Let’s break it down.

1. Tinashe was getting, like, no votes

This seems obvious, but it must be said. Based on skill alone and her scores — she’s tied with the highest average of the season, 25.6 — Tinashe was a contender for the Mirrorball trophy. But fan votes are the other half of the “Dancing” equation, and she had to have been at or near...

Could Alexis Ren be the victim of a shocking early elimination on “Dancing with the Stars”? I’d blame the electoral college, but this time it was the popular vote that was the problem. On “Dancing with the Stars” for Trios Night, R&B singer Tinashe and her pro partner Brandon Armstrong were joined by season 18 runner-up Amy Purdy for a tango (watch it above). As usual for Tinashe it was one of the highest scoring routines of the night. In fact, Tinashe had never finished lower than second place on the judges’ leaderboard. That’s what made it so shocking when she was eliminated at the end of the night in 10th place.

It all came down to her fan base, or the lack thereof. The recording artist has a few hits under her belt, but she wasn’t a household name before the season started. She was paired with Brandon Armstrong, a first-time pro dancer who hasn’t yet established a fan base of his own.

“Dancing with the Stars” eliminated its third contestant on Monday, and for the third time, a woman, Nancy McKeon, went home. Not only that, but it was the third woman who was in the bottom five that was announced during the Week 1 elimination. She followed Nikki Glaser and Danielle Umstead off the dance floor. Will they be joined by the other two who were in the bottom five, Mary Lou Retton and Alexis Ren, in the next two weeks? More importantly, why are the female celebrities dropping like flies?

As we’ve previously noted, “Dancing” is a pretty equal opportunity show, producing 13 female champs from the first 26 seasons. In addition, 25 out of 52 finalists have also been women. There was even a four-season streak with female champs: Melissa Rycroft (Season 15), Kellie Pickler (Season 16), Amber Riley (Season 17) and Meryl Davis (Season 18). Memorable Year Week on “Dancing with the Stars” brought the first 30 of the season, lots of tears, and six couples clearing 100,000 plays on YouTube. Who were they?

1. Needless to say, not everyone who watches a contestant’s dance on YouTube is voting and vice versa.

2. Not every star or dance is created equal. Some people already come in with major notoriety and a fan base, which could boost views. Some pros have a bigger fan base than the stars they’re teaching. Some people accrue fans as the season progresses. Sometimes a performance is just flat-out amazing or a complete hot mess or meme-worthy that everyone is going to be Googling it the next day so they don’t have Fomo.

“Dancing with the Stars” is through week three of the competition, when each couple danced a routine highlighting the “Most Memorable Year” of their lives. This is always the most emotional week of the competition as it gives us the chance to see these stars at their most vulnerable.

In a night full of tears and celebration, actor Juan Pablo Di Pace and his pro partner Cheryl Burke were deemed the most memorable dance of the night, earning a perfect 30 out of 30 from the judges for their sizzling samba, while Tinashe, Milo Manheim and Evanna Lynch tied with their own highest scores of the season (27 out of 30). Meanwhile, Joe Amabile placed at the bottom of the leaderboard yet again, but managed to escape \elimination as “Facts of Life” star Nancy McKeon became the third celebrity to get the boot.

Cheryl Burke and Val Chmerkovskiy were both gunning for their third Mirrorball trophies on “Dancing with the Stars,” and now with Chmerkovskiy out after his and Nancy McKeon‘s elimination on Tuesday, only Burke can get No. 3 this season. But that’s fine with our readers because 78 percent want Burke to get her third Mirrorball first.

Burke won back-to-back Mirrorballs on her first two seasons on the show with Drew Lachey (Season 2) and Emmitt Smith (Season 3) and has since racked up two second-place finishes, with Gilles Marini (Season 8) and Rob Kardashian (Season 13), and three third-place finishes, with Cristian de la Fuente (Season 6), William Levy (Season 14) and Jack Osbourne (Season 17). She’s partnered with “Fuller House” star Juan Pablo Di Pace this season and they’re looking strong, having scored the first perfect 30 of the season on Monday for their samba.
