Jean-Claude Van Damme: What are his five best movies?
Image
Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Muscles from Brussels. If you grew up in the early nineties, this handsome Belgian was everywhere. With his unique accent, good looks, and a butt he was all but too happy to show off at least once a film, he was the rare action star that was just as popular with the ladies as the dudes. Changing tastes in the mid-nineties meant that his career as a viable lead in theatrical films started to dry up, which wasn’t helped by some off-screen issues he had with drugs (a Hollywood tale as old as time). But, while his contemporary, Steven Seagal, became something of a parody of himself, Jcvd got clean and doubled down on his craft, emerging as a surprisingly potent actor in some Dtv movies that are way better than anyone gives them credit for.

While his days as an A-list lead might be behind him,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme in Timecop: Policía del futuro (1994)
Timecop (1994) Revisited – Sci-Fi Action Movie Review
Jean-Claude Van Damme in Timecop: Policía del futuro (1994)
It’s time for a new episode of our series Revisited, and with this one we’re looking back at a classic sci-fi action movie: Timecop from 1994 (watch it Here), starring the legendary Jean-Claude Van Damme. You can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above.

Directed by Peter Hyams, Timecop was based on a story that Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden created for the anthology comic book Dark Horse Comics, which shared its name with its publisher. Richardson and Verheiden also wrote the film’s screenplay. Here’s the synopsis: When mankind perfects time travel, the government establishes the Time Enforcement Commission to thwart criminal attempts to alter the timeline. Police officer Walker is recruited by Tec Commander Matuzak, but soon finds his investigation of Senator Aaron McComb being thwarted by elements within the government. When Walker’s wife, Melissa, is attacked, he must travel across...

A Marvel Actor Accidentally Stabbed Liam Neeson While Filming A Historical Epic
Image
Michael Caton-Jones' historical biography "Rob Roy" had the bad luck of being released on April 7, 2025, only about a month and a half before Mel Gibson's juggernaut "Braveheart." Both films were about notable Scottish rebels, with "Rob Roy" centering on a 16th-century folk hero and "Braveheart" focusing on a 14th-century freedom fighter. As such, audiences couldn't help but compare the two films. "Braveheart" was the larger, more expensive, more violent, and more crowd-pleasing of the two, and it would go on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. "Rob Roy" was kind of swallowed by the Hollywood "Braveheart" hype.

That's a pity, really, seeing as "Rob Roy" is a fantastic film unto itself. Liam Neeson stars in the movie as Rob Roy MacGregor, a put-upon Scottish clan leader who has to borrow some money to establish himself as a powerful cattle trader and feed his people.

Five ’90s Monster Movies to Stream This Week
Image
The ’90s have always been a tricky decade to define for horror, offering everything from cable and physical home releases to big budget horror. On the latter front, horror experimented with grand period pieces like Interview with the Vampire and Bram Stoker’s Dracula as much as it did with spectacle driven, action-heavy creature features.

The decade delivered no shortage of memorable monster movies that emphasized creature FX and entertainment, from theatrical releases to home video offerings.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ’90s monster movies that delivered high-energy, fun, and inventive monster designs. Because it’s Monday, we can use more horror fun.

Here’s where to stream this week’s streaming picks.

Critically Panned Disaster Film Finds Redemption on Netflix 22 Years After Flopping in Theaters
Image
Sci-fi disaster films have always been an attraction, although not all of them were a success. The star-studded film The Core was an example of a film that was not as successful as it hoped to be.

The film was released in 2003 and didn't fulfill its mission. The Core had a huge budget, but was critically panned, and didn't end up covering its costs. According to Tudum, The Core has become a hit on Netflix, finding a new chance at redemption on streaming, 22 years after its release.

The Core debuted on Netflix very recently and quickly became a hit between March 31 and April 6. In its first week, the film debuted in sixth place globally and attracted 4.5 million views and 10.1 million hours viewed. The movie is not available on Netflix U.S., but it's available on Paramount+. Following its debut, The Core entered the Top 10 in 58 countries, including Central and South America,...

Syd Mead Paintings Get NYC Exhibition: Visionary Futurist Shaped Hollywood From ‘Blade Runner’ To ‘Aliens’
Image
Legendary visual futurist Syd Mead’s paintings will be showcased in a major exhibition, “Future Pastime,” running from March 28 to May 21 at the former Mitchell-Innes & Nash gallery space in Chelsea.

Long before the metaverse, Mead was crafting immersive future worlds that have shaped our collective imagination and became a defining force in science fiction cinema, designing iconic worlds. From the neon-drenched streets of Blade Runner (1982) to the sleek, geometric landscapes of Tron (1982), his influence on sci-fi films is undeniable. His designs also impacted Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) 2010 (1984), Aliens (1986), and many more. They even inspired Elon Musk’s Cybertruck.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1933, Mead was a visionary artist who redefined how we imagine the future. After serving in the U.S. Army, he studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, blending inspiration from classical masters like Caravaggio with the Space Age musings of Chesley Bonestell to...

When Arnold Schwarzenegger Shocked Miriam Margolyes On Set: The Story She’ll Never Forgive Or Forget!
Image
Miriam Margolyes On Schwarzenegger (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Miriam Margolyes never held back in interviews, and her take on working with Arnold Schwarzenegger was no exception. The Harry Potter actor once revealed a particularly foul experience with the action star while filming End of Days in 1999. According to her, Schwarzenegger intentionally passed gas in her face during a break between takes – an act she neither forgot nor forgave.

“He’s a bit too full of himself, and I don’t care for him at all,” Margolyes said on the I’ve Got News For You podcast. “He’s a Republican, which I don’t like. He was actually quite rude. He farted in my face. Now, I fart, of course, I do—but I don’t fart in people’s faces. He did it deliberately, right in my face.”

The scene in question had Margolyes playing Satan’s sister while Schwarzenegger...

Bruce Willis Almost Starred In A Sci-Fi Remake Of A Classic John Wayne Western
Image
Whenever Roger Ebert saw a limp Hollywood remake of a classic movie, the esteemed film critic used to lament that studios had it all wrong. They shouldn't be redoing movies that were already brilliant, but, rather, revisiting films with promising premises that, for whatever reason, didn't work the first time out. While this may sound like perfectly reasonable advice, studios typically aren't keen to throw money at projects that already failed once. That's how executives get fired.

This is how we get unwanted, undercooked remakes like 2006's "The Omen," 2012's "Total Recall," and 2014's "RoboCop." The originals were smart, zeitgeisty genre flicks from top-notch directors, while the second go-rounds were sweaty retreads with no point of view and, thus, no reason for being -- but at least the execs who greenlit these movies could defend them on the grounds of brand recognition. Had they gone down in flames with a remake of,...

The B-Side – Peter Hyams (with Mike Ryan)
Image
Happy Valentine’s Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared.

Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams’ eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010.

We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don’t, and the lasting effect many of Hyams’ films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers.

There’s much talk about Hyams’ ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.

Mike makes the...

The Sequel to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Highest-Grossing Movie Got a Sequel 9 Years Later and Didn't Even Include Him
Image
1994’s Timecop was the first true worldwide blockbuster for martial-arts action starJean-Claude Van Damme. Under the direction of Peter Hyams, the Muscles from Brussels found a role in the Dark Horse Comics film adaptation that allowed him to show dramatic range while throwing fancy high kicks and splits. Rather than capitalize on its success with an immediate sequel, Universal Pictures went the straight-to-video route without its star in 2003’s Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision.

Adam Driver's '65' is Roaring on Hulu Despite a Terrible 36% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
You just never know what movie that bombed in theaters will become a streaming hit. The latest example is 65, the much-maligned dinosaur sci-fi thriller with Adam Driver. It opened to a measly $12.3 million on its way to $60.7 million worldwide on a reported $45 million budget (not including marketing costs). Considering studios and theaters split the box office almost evenly, it was nearly a total disaster.

And yet, it recently roared to number two on Hulu's Top 10 streaming list, making it a streaming hit for another otherwise dismal film. It currently sits at a terrible 36% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, yet audiences love it more, giving it a surprisingly high 64%. Just months after its terrible March 2023 theatrical debut, 65 was number one on Netflix. Audiences still love dinosaur movies.

Driver stars as Mills, an astronaut who leaves Earth along with his wife and sick daughter to explore the galaxy on a multi-year mission.

Jack Nicholson Refused To Return To Acting For A Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Mike Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep" is a miracle of a movie. It's a faithful adaptation of author Stephen King's 2013 novel of the same name, which itself is a follow-up to King's novel version of "The Shining" from 1977. It's also, however, a sequel (and a bit of a legacy sequel at that) to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 cinematic adaptation of "The Shining," and it's this latter aspect which still seems staggeringly impossible to do on paper, even as Flanagan ended up deftly proving that it was very possible. After all, upon taking on "Doctor Sleep," Flanagan was facing numerous obstacles: first and foremost, a sequel to a Kubrick movie is a daunting prospect all by itself. The second, even tougher issue involves King's infamous distaste for Kubrick's film; given the disparities between Kubrick's movie and King's novel, and the fact that those differences make up the bulk of contention between author and filmmaker,...

Van Damme and Seagal both almost fought Yetis in separate projects
Image
It’s always cool when we have the chance to watch action heroes venture into horror territory. We’ve seen Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the Predator, battle Satan (in End of Days), and raise a zombie daughter (in Maggie). Sylvester Stallone has taken on psycho killers in Cobra and Eye See You. Charles Bronson tracked a serial killer in 10 to Midnight. Dolph Lundgren faced off with an alien drug dealer in I Come in Peace. Jean-Claude Van Damme played both a serial killer and the killer’s heroic clone in Replicant. Steven Seagal killed vampires in Against the Dark. The list goes on… but two separate action horror projects we tragically missed out on would have given us the sight of both Van Damme and Seagal fighting Yetis, a.k.a. Abominable Snowmen!

Back in 1995, Universal Pictures purchased a screenplay by Troy Neighbors and Steven Fienberg that told the...

10 Underrated Spy Thrillers From The 1970s You Probably Haven't Heard Of
Image
The 1970s were an excellent time to be a fan of the spy thriller genre. Franchises like the James Bond films were becoming increasingly popular, with five Bond films being released during this decade alone. 007 wasn't the only force to be reckoned with in the genre, though. Other major features, like 3 Days of the Condor and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, also roared onto the scene, making spy thrillers a beloved genre throughout the country.

Of course, not every spy film received the same level of acclaim as these hits. Because so many of this type of film were being released at the same time, many great ones managed to fly under the radar. Sadly, these films never seemed to get the attention they rightfully deserved. Now, when looking back at this era in the film industry, it is essential to take a look at the more...

Jean-Claude Van Damme Kicked Ass Across Time in This '90s-Tastic Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
In the late 80s and early 90s, martial arts action star Jean-Claude Van Damme dazzled audiences with his big kicks and eye-popping splits. Though his audience expanded in the time between 1988s Bloodsport and 1992s Universal Soldier, critics largely dismissed Van Dammes movies for their simple plots as well as the one-dimensional characters. In 1994, however, Van Damme delivered one of his most well-rounded chacters ever: Peter Hyams Timecop.

The Relic (1997) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

Outland is the Best Movie You Never Saw (and a quasi sequel to Alien?)
Sean Connery in Víctima de sus deseos (1958)
The Story: On Io, Jupiter’s moon, miners have begun randomly committing suicide in gruesome ways. This is chalked out to their grueling working conditions, but the outpost’s new marshal, William O’Niel (Sean Connery) becomes convinced something else is afoot. His pursuit of the truth lands him on the hit list of the outpost’s general director, Sheppard (Peter Boyle), who hires professional hit men to deal with the pesky marshal. Knowing that skilled gunmen are on the way, and without anyone to turn to, O’Niel waits to face the men alone.

This Cult Classic 1981 Sci-Fi Movie Was Sean Connery's Version Of An All-Time Great Western
Image
Outland was Sean Connery's attempt at High Noon in outer space, but it failed to meet the high standard set by the classic Western film. Initially a box office failure, Outland has gained a cult classic status years later, known for its impressive visual effects. Despite mixed critical reception, Sean Connery's role as Marshal William T. O'Niel in Outland remains memorable to fans of the sci-fi thriller.

The cult classic Sean Connery movie Outland was the legendary actor's version of one of the greatest Western films ever made. Released in 1981, Outland is a science fiction thriller film written and directed by Peter Hyams, who's also known for his other sci-fi works such as Timecop (1994), 2010 (1984), and The Relic (1997). Outland (1981) Is One of the Best Sci-Fi Westerns Despite Its Plot Holes
Image
Sci-fi Westerns can be a hit or miss, with Outland standing out despite plot holes and similarities to High Noon. Sean Connery shines in the role of Marshall O'Niel, embodying the lone hero archetype in a space setting. While Outland has gained a cult following, it faces criticism for plot holes and questionable science, challenging its appeal.

The mashing up of movie genres can be a viewer's delight or an awful concoction, like oil and water. Both the sci-fi and Western genres have a dedicated fanbase that usually is pretty protective and quick to point out faults that go against the grain in a way that takes away from the genre. This is the reason why sci-fi Westerns have always been tricky to nail; for every Mad Max: Fury Road, a Wild Wild West is waiting to offset fans' opinions of this particular mash-up.

Released in 1981, Outland, starring Sean Connery,...

"Im Trying To Comprehend What I Just Watched": Cult Classic Sean Connery 1981 Sci-Fi Movie Leaves VFX Artists Stunned
Image
Outland's stunning special effects pushed boundaries and were way ahead of their time in 1981. The production relied heavily on physical constructs, precise lighting, and camera work to create immersive environments on screen. Outland utilized optical compositing techniques to layer elements seamlessly, integrating live-action footage with background plates.

A cult classic sci-fi film from 1981, Outland, leaves VFX artists stunned, with one of them saying "Im trying to comprehend what I just watched." Written and directed by Peter Hyams, the sci-fi thriller follows a federal marshal stationed at a mining colony on Jupiter's moon Io, where he uncovers evidence of corruption and as he attempts to expose those involved, he faces threats on his life from those determined to silence him. Sean Connery leads the cast alongside Peter Boyle, Frances Sternhagen, James B. Sikking, and Kika Markham.

With ‘FBI: Most Wanted,’ Emmy Nominee Declan Mulvey Makes an Action Movie Every Week
Image
If the 1970s and ’80s represented a golden age of kinetic but grounded stunt work by pioneers like Hal Needham, Buddy Joe Hooker, and Vic Armstrong, the 2020s are proving to be a seminal moment for stunts in television. The urban action that used to be the bread and butter of Walter Hill, Richard Donner, and Peter Hyams has migrated from the big screen (now dominated by more visual effects-oriented set pieces) to network procedurals and streaming series where stunt coordinators have become adept at creating spectacular moments on tight schedules — all while keeping the performers and crew as safe as possible.

Since its 2020 debut, Dick Wolf’s CBS series “FBI: Most Wanted” has consistently showcased some of the best stunt work on television, with expertly choreographed action sequences that are realistic, thrilling, and heavily slanted toward practical effects. Season 5 included some of the show’s most dynamic set pieces to date,...

James Sikking, ‘Hill Street Blues’ and ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.’ Star, Dies at 90
Image
James B. Sikking, known for his roles as Lt. Howard Hunter on “Hill Street Blues” and the titular character’s father on “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” has died. He was 90.

Sikking died Saturday of complications from dementia, his publicist Cynthia Synder said in a statement Sunday evening.

“In a remarkable career, Sikking’s wonderfully exciting face gave us drama, comedy, tragedy and hilarious farse,” Snyder shared with Variety. “His career spanned over six decades in television, film and on stage.”

Sikking was widely recognized for his portrayal of Howard Hunter on the police procedural series “Hill Street Blues,” which aired from 1981 to 1987 on NBC. He received an Emmy nomination in 1984 for his performance as the clean-cut, pipe-smoking lieutenant.

After “Hill Street Blues,” Sikking played Dr. David Howser, father of Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris), for all four seasons of the ABC medical sitcom from 1989 to 1993.

He portrayed a police officer again for Steven Bochco,...

Peter Hyams: Genre Cinema’s Ultimate Journeyman – Forbidden Worlds Film Festival 2024
Image
Few directors reach the sort of stardom where their names are thrown on billboards. A Nolan or a Tarantino or a Peele become brands in and of themselves, while the other 99% bubble quietly under the surface; reliable journeymen, gallantly plugging away at the nuts and bolts of what used to be the mid-budget feature scene. These are the filmmakers who not only set the pace, but who change the very language of a genre too, consistently firing out exciting, crowd-pleasing, attention-grabbing stuff, year after year, decade after decade. Creative puppet masters living behind the scenes; their movies aren’t as stylistically loud, but their generation-spanning oeuvres are just as (if not more) legendary.

Don Siegel, J. Lee Thompson, Mary Lambert, Renny Harlin, Jonathan Demme, Doug Liman, John Frankenheimer – even just picking a handful of names at random gives you a who’s-who of filmmakers responsible for some of the most...

Killer Queens, Keanu Reeves & B-Movie Classics on IMAX! Bristol’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival marks another explosive line-up for 2024
Image
From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.

Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.

For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

The Most Underrated Action Movies of the 1990s
Image
The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.

It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Starting today, April 1, 2024, Netflix subscribers can revisit Brian de Palma’s erotic noir “Body Double” and Kevin Bacon’s breakout performance in “Footloose.” How about a double feature? There’s also “Repo Man” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” streaming just in time for franchise reboot “Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F” out this summer.

Capricorn One: The Best Sci-Fi Thriller You Never Saw
Image
As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn’t see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten – save for a small cult of devoted fans.

The film is directed by Best Movie You Never Saw favorite Peter Hyams, who also made Outland, 2010, Running Scared,...

End of Days (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.

Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

These 4 Horror Movies Deserved to Be on the Big Screen in 2023
Image
Technology giveth and taketh away. We can watch most movies with the click of a button from our couch but no longer have the joy of going out to the video rental store. We can also buy and digitally “own” any movie at a moment’s notice, but more and more, physical copies of movies aren’t even being made.

The movie theater has stayed the course, however. Through Covid-19 shutdowns, insane movie budgets followed by box office disasters, the rise of quality TV shows like Game of Thrones, streaming, The Flash… theaters have survived, thank God. That being said, each year, more movies conveniently grace us with their presence at home and only at home.

It’s not always a bad thing for films to skip movie theaters entirely. But I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t have been nice to have the option to see...

Frightfest 2023: ‘Transmission’ Review
Image
Stars: Angela Cela, Charles Chudabala, Nicole Cinaglia , Sheri Davis, Marcella Di Pasquale, Jessica Cameron, Felissa Rose, Jennifer Nangle, Sadie Katz, Alan Maxson, Dave Sheridan, Vernon Wells, Noel Jason Scott, Maria Shapley | Written and Directed by Michael Hurst

Directed by Michael J. Hurst, who has vast genre experience – helming films such as House of the Dead 2, Pumpkinhead 4 and 2006’s Darkroom, as well as writing the demented Mansquito (aka Mosquito Man), and both of Scott Adkins’ Ninja movies (personal favourites of mine) – Transmission is a dark, twisted film that feels akin to Peter Hyams’s comedy Stay Tuned, which starred John Ritter and Pam Dawber as a couple trapped in an ever-changing TV or the comedy anthology Amazon Women on the Moon that flicked between 90s TV, poking fun at the tropes of that era.

The film unfolds on a television screen as we, seeing things from the perspective of an old man,...

Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 1980s
Image
While the 1970s was known as a wild, bold, experimental time in modern cinema—which extended to all genres, including science fiction—the 1980s were best known for… well, we don’t know what, exactly. The rise of the erotic thriller, the action superstar, and cookie-cutter safe high-concept star vehicles, perhaps? As for sci-fi, the decade was marked by both undisputed blockbusters, including the Star Wars and Star Trek sequels, Aliens, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as some inarguable classics like The Thing, Tron, and Blade Runner. Intriguingly, the more risky ones needed years to find their audience and critical acclaim.

At the same time, sci-fi began to rely less on literary adaptations of the previous decade and more on crossing its streams with other genres, like horror, the Western, and the action thriller—making somewhat of a turn away from the idea-driven films that had come before.

2010: The Year We Make Contact – The Best Movie You Never Saw
Image
The Story: Nine years after the disappearance of astronaut Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea), Discovery One mission overseer, Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) is given the opportunity to take part in a joint U.S-u.S.S.R mission to see what went wrong. There’s only one problem – the two countries are on the cusp of nuclear war, and tension between the American and Soviet teams looks to unmoor an already impossible mission.

The Players: Starring: Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban and Keir Dullea. Music by David Shire. Written and directed by Peter Hyams.

The History: Crafting a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey sounds like a fool’s errand. Being that it’s one of the most acclaimed films ever made, in order to be judged any kind of success the sequel would have to be some kind of masterpiece. In 1984, director Peter Hyams,...

This Sean Connery Sci-Fi Movie Is Actually a Remake of a Classic Western
Image
Outland, the sci-fi thriller from writer/director Peter Hyams, stars Sean Connery as Will O’Niel, a disgraced lawman investigating a series of mysterious deaths at a mining colony on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons. The film, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month, was part of a string of grimy R-rated science fiction movies trying to capitalize on the unexpected success of Ridley Scott’s Alien. Like the majority of those films, Outland was a commercial disappointment that has spent the last several decades in relative obscurity, while Connery and Hyams went on to further cement their respective legacies as Hollywood legends — Connery with a string of classic performances including his Academy Award-winning role in The Untouchables, and Hyams with the 1994 Jean Claude Van Damme action thriller Timecop.

The Arrow in the Head Show revisits The Relic, starring Tom Sizemore
Tom Sizemore at an event for Planeta rojo (2000)
Last month, actor Tom Sizemore passed away from a brain aneurysm at the age of just 61. To pay tribute to him, The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance are looking back at a horror film Sizemore starred in back in 1997, The Relic (watch it Here). To find out what they had to say about The Relic, check out the video embedded above.

Directed by Peter Hyams from a screenplay that came from the combined forces of Amy Holden Jones, John Raffo, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, The Relic was based on a novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The film has the following synopsis: Come in – if you dare. The opening-night gala for a new exhibit at Chicago’s natural history museum is under way. But be advised: something terrifying wants to make sure no one ever leaves.

Sizemore is joined in the cast by Penelope Ann Miller,...

End of Days (1999) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.

Context of the time is crucial for...

Albert Brenner, Acclaimed Production Designer on ‘The Sunshine Boys,’ ‘The Missouri Breaks’ and ‘Pretty Woman,’ Dies at 96

Albert Brenner, the innovative production designer, art director and five-time Oscar nominee whose work was admired in films from Fail Safe, Bullitt and Point Blank to The Sunshine Boys, The Turning Point and Backdraft, has died. He was 96.

Brenner died Thursday in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced.

The Brooklyn native started his career dressing mannequins for window displays and worked on such TV shows as Car 54, Where Are You? before progressing to a much larger canvas — designing the five-acre New York Street backlot for Paramount in Hollywood after the original was destroyed by fire in August 1983.

Across his 50-plus-year career, Brenner collaborated on eight features with director Garry Marshall, seven with Herbert Ross, five with Peter Hyams, three with Sidney Lumet and two with Robert Mulligan. Comedies, sci-fi flicks, Westerns, period pieces — he did them all.

The Chance To Finally Play A Romantic Lead Lured Harrison Ford Into A Box Office Bomb
Image
Legendary Hollywood men typically stick to specific archetypes when playing the romantic lead in their films. Where Humphrey Bogart was often coarse and cynical with a heart of gold, Cary Grant tended to be debonair and sharp-witted with a mischievous streak. At the peak of his movie stardom, Harrison Ford had a touch of both those gents. He was a cocky scoundrel who bore his skepticism like a shield yet would allow himself to be unguarded and even sweet in the right company. Ford was also just as foxy donning a fedora as he was rocking the adorkable getup of a mild-mannered professor.

After breaking out as the suave cosmic reprobate Han Solo in "Star Wars: A New Hope," Ford co-starred in Jeremy Paul Kagan's 1977 Vietnam War veteran drama, "Heroes" (a film he worked on prior to "A New Hope" reaching theaters), and Guy Hamilton's 1978 "Guns of Navarone" sequel,...
