We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in Smallville, is opening up about the idea he has for a sequel series in an animated form.
In a new interview, Rosenbaum revealed he and Tom Welling were developing an animated series with the original cast and creators of the show that originated in 2001 on the now-defunct WB network.
“All I could share is that it’s a great idea. We have Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar], the creators of Smallville, backing us up,” Rosenbaum said in an interview with Screen Rant. “When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this: pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time.”
He continued, “We had the strike, we had a change of executives at DC — one being one of my best friends in the world, James Gunn. When the time’s right,...

If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas is nearly at an end, so it’s time to bring out the big guns in holiday horror. The 2nd Day of Creepmas brings a pair of gateway horror-comedies that will keep you busy from Christmas through New Year’s Eve.
When it comes to holiday horror, few can beat Joe Dante’s Gremlins. The charming 1984 classic decks the halls with holiday theming but it’s also unafraid to show its sharp pointy teeth. Dante’s sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, takes a drastically different direction, but its high energy and anything goes attitude make a strong case for annual New Year’s viewing.

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up is one of the better of the willfully decadent American thrillers from the 1980s that are preoccupied with drugs, guns, strippers, prostitutes, money, and the men who kill each other attempting to obtain them. Though this film isn’t generally mentioned in discussions of the adaptations of Elmore Leonard’s work, the crime master’s imprint is felt on the scenes that routinely threaten to elevate 52 Pick-Up from a sleazy, well-paced time-killer to an authentically good movie. Leonard’s sense of humor is under-emphasized, but his satirical notion of crime as a business beholden to the same petty political trivialities as more “legitimate” enterprises is explicitly accounted for.
When self-made industrialist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) is blackmailed by a couple of vicious hoods, he remains unflappable while amusingly entering into negotiations with them over the terms of his exploitation. Though this is never fully acknowledged in Frankenheimer’s film,...

DC’s The Flash had a lot of buzz around it prior to release, partly through the exploits of star Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton once again donning the cowl to play Batman. Once The Flash flopped, most of the conversation that was left centered on the special appearances from other DC characters, including a brief one from Christopher Reeve’s iconic take on Superman. But not everyone thought it was a touching inclusion.
Responding to one take that Christopher Reeve’s The Flash cameo was “one of the worst things I’ve seen in any film, ever”, John Glover – who Lionel Luther on Smallville – leaped tall buildings to defend the choice, tweeting, “I think it’s up to his family / estate and not anyone else. One reason that "Batman: The Animated Series" was and remains so beloved was how it embraced case-of-the-week storytelling. This was perfect for showcasing all the different corners and characters that make up the wild world of Gotham City. Such a large cast of characters meant that the series brought in a lot of actors; voice director Andrea Romano sought actors of all stripes for parts big and small. On the Popcorn & Shield podcast, the late Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) described the casting process as thus:
"They were really looking for actors, rather than just voice people. They cast a really wide net. So there were TV people, film people, stage people. Every week going in it was like going to summer camp, the people I got to work with."
Series co-creator Bruce Timm, also being interviewed, agreed with Conroy's sentiment. "Every week there was always some special, you know,...

Ah, the glory days of early 2000s television, when studios scrambled to capitalize on the success of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Friends," and "Beverly Hills, 90210." Enter The WB's "Smallville," a Superman prequel based on the blue boy's formative years, before he donned the tights, red underwear, and cape. Starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lane, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, and Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, the series offered a fun spin on the Superman story and tinkered with iconic characters in a way that made them feel fresh. Lex Luthor, for example, starts out as Clark's best friend and gradually devolves into his comic-book counterpart. At the same time, Superman regulars such as Lois Lane (Erica Durance), Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), and Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) were given makeovers to properly update them for the modern era; ditto...

Some young people look at various tweets, articles, and posts from cinephiles and film historians like myself advocating for proper film preservation and scoff, thinking that, in this brave new world of instant access streaming services and online downloads, the entire history of cinema is at our fingertips and so we shouldn't be complaining.
Of course, this attitude is not only grossly misinformed given modern cinema's unsustainable status quo, but potentially dangerous, at least when it comes to keeping the history of what is still the most preeminent artistic medium of our lifetime alive. If historians are particularly passionate about the issue, it's in part because we're aware of similar threats that menaced film preservation in the past.
One of those threats emerged in the mid-'80s, when media mogul Ted Turner made the rather glib decision to "colorize" classic black-and-white films for television broadcast. The pushback from filmmakers, critics,...

"Batman: The Animated Series" isn't just one of the greatest animated television shows of all time, but one of the most perfect comic book adaptations in history. While the saga of the Dark Knight has been told many times on the page and screen, "Batman: The Animated Series" explored the depths of Bruce Wayne's psyche. Many Bat-fans would argue that there isn't another actor who has captured the essence of the character quite like Kevin Conroy.
One of the best elements of "Batman: The Animated Series" was the show's emphasis on Gotham City's rogue's gallery. Mark Hamill brought chaotic energy to the Joker, which made Batman's arch-nemesis both hilarious and terrifying. Other villains like The Penguin (Paul Williams), The Riddler (John Glover), Two-Face (Richard Moll), Catwoman (Adrienne Barbeau), Poison Ivy (Diane Pershing), and Scarecrow (Henry Polic II) received terrific spotlight episodes and storylines. It's bizarre to say this for a show like Fear The Walking Dead, but the world has changed.
The official trailer for Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 has dropped, and, well, it's a treat.
After the upswing in quality for Fear the Walking Dead Season 6, it looks like this next season might just top it.
Morgan and Grace appear to be on the outside looking into this new world order, and it's all thanks to Strand.
If you watch Fear the Walking Dead online, you know Strand started to embrace the darkness inside him in the final episodes of the previous season.
There was a whole monologue about him becoming who he was always supposed to be, and it's going to be so much fun to watch.
Morgan and Grace appear to be banned from the new community Strand is creating, and let's just say there will be a lot...

The story of The Walking Dead and its spinoffs is one of countless status quo changes. First, Rick and his group found shelter at the CDC in Atlanta before it self-destructed. Then they lived on a farm until it was swarmed by zombies, then a prison before a dude with a tank blew it up, then they wandered around Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia for a while before finally settling in Alexandria, which they’ve also had to flee at least three or four times. And the Fear the Walking Dead crew haven’t fared much better.
In fact, the latest status quo change on Fear the Walking Dead might be the most extreme “refresh” to the Twd universe yet. Unable to stop the insane Teddy Maddox (John Glover) and his creepy doomsday cult from launching a nuclear missile into the heart of Texas, Morgan and his friends are separated...

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 16
So, you’ve spent the last several years surviving a violent hellscape of unliving death—lucky you! Only now, you suddenly find yourself staring down certain death in the form of a nuclear warhead. Knowing your destruction is imminent, how would you choose to live out your last moments?
That’s the basic premise of Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 6 finale, “The Beginning.” And I must admit, I went into this episode with high hopes—only to have those hopes dashed within minutes. This is through no fault of a talented cast that acts its talented heart out (as they usually do week after week). From Lennie James to Brigitte Kali Canales and everyone in between, they make the most out of what they’re given to work with.
It’s just that showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg,...

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 15
Well, here we are, just a week away from the end of another season of Fear the Walking Dead. The funny thing about “USS Pennsylvania” is that it plays more like a season finale, rather than the penultimate episode. You have to wonder what can possibly happen next, now that Teddy’s deadly endgame has (mostly) been set in motion. Not that Fear hasn’t flirted with nuclear annihilation before—but this time certainly seems like it’s for keeps. Is “USS Pennsylvania” the season’s best episode? No, but there’s still a lot about it that works.
Like John Glover’s Teddy Maddox. We’ve seen plenty of antagonists come and go over the years, but Teddy is not your average villain of the week. He’s not interested in amassing power so much...

John Glover has found a level of stability in his career that many actors can’t even imagine. Over the last six decades, he has made a lasting impact on the entertainment industry and he’s earned a lot of recognition in the process. Although he’s been typecase as a villain, John has still managed to show how many different things he can do. He approaches each role with a high level of professionalism and a desire to give his best performance. Most recently, John has been getting a lot of attention for his role on the TV series Fear the Walking

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 14
After being sidelined for most of the season, Fear the Walking Dead finally throws one of its best characters into the fray. I’m talking about Alicia, of course, who hasn’t gotten nearly enough screen time lately. So it’s interesting (and refreshing) that “Mother” should lean so heavily into what it means to be Madison Clark’s daughter. The episode continues season 6’s trend of unexpected reunions, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. But more on that chance encounter in a bit.
In the meantime, let’s talk about Teddy Maddox (John Glover). We already knew he was a bit unhinged, what with being a cult leader and embalming dissenters and wanting to usher in a nuclear Armageddon. Taken individually, any one of those things is a red flag, to be sure. Taken together,...

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 13
I don’t know about any of you, but I avoid all spoilers so I can go into every episode of Fear the Walking Dead with a fresh and open mind. This allows more room for genuine, unfiltered reactions to plot twists and character deaths. Like when Fear killed off John Dorie earlier this season in the “The Door.” This heartbreaking episode was all the more tragic because John died feeling like he didn’t make enough of a difference. We know just the opposite to be true, of course. Not only did John’s life positively impact his friends, his death has also made a profound impact on those he’s left behind. And while no one can ably fill the Garret Dillahunt-shaped void left by John’s passing, “J.D.” steps up in...

Fear the Walking Dead season 6 has been one of the darkest seasons of the show so far. Our heroes have been separated, some left for dead while others were forced to join Virginia and her cruel group of Pioneers who want all the survivors they meet to fall in line or die.
When Morgan stood up to Virginia in season 5, it ended very badly for him. Not only was his group broken but so was his spirit. But season 6 has been all about putting those pieces back together for Morgan. After a deadly encounter with a bounty hunter in the first half of the season gave him a new lease on life, Morgan has been busy plotting the downfall of the Pioneers, one strike at a time.
By the midseason finale, it seemed Morgan had his winning card: Dakota, Virginia’s rebellious...

If Kevin Can Wait, WandaVision and Breaking Bad had a torrid three-way and made a baby of indeterminate paternity, it’d probably look a bit like Kevin Can F**k Himself — judging by the first trailer for the genre-busting dramedy.
Debuting this summer on both AMC and AMC+, and starring Schitt’s Creek standout Annie Murphy, Kevin Can F**k Himself explores the secret life of a type of woman we all grew up believing we knew — the sitcom wife — by asking what the world looks like through her eyes. Alliances will be tested on the second half of Fear the Walking Dead Season 6, and it's going to be a wild ride to the finish line for all of the characters.
AMC has dropped the official trailer for the new episodes, premiering April 11.
"Death, destruction, decay. What is happening to the world isn't new. The world's been breaking down since its inception," we hear in narration for the show.
"Everything is winding down, including us. Death is inevitable. But from this death comes new life."
We get to see John Glover's new character speaking to Alicia, who declares him "the king of the crazies."
Are we getting a mysterious new cult in these new episodes, or is there more at play here?
Alicia has been desperately searching for meaning in recent seasons following the deaths of both her mother, brother, stepfather, and stepbrother.

Fear the Walking Dead finally returns on April 11, which means we might finally get some closure on some of the biggest loose ends from the first half of season 6, including just how Morgan plans to get his people out of Virginia’s clutches.
So far the season has brought some radical changes to Morgan’s character — an altruistic leader left for dead who is transformed into an ax brandishing hunter looking for revenge. Morgan has often turned to violence during moments of distress — in this case, he let his people down and they’re now all suffering under Virginia’s reign because of it — but this time things are a little different. We’re not dealing with “Clear” Morgan who barely has a grasp on reality or who he is. It’s very clear that Morgan knows who he is this time around (or who he believes he needs to...

After being forced to enter a hiatus earlier than planned due to Covid-19, we finally have a return date for Fear the Walking Dead.
AMC announced today that the second half of Fear the Walking Dead 6, featuring nine all-new episodes, will return on Sunday, April 11 at 9 pm/8c.
A new episode of Talking Dead will air later that evening, which probably means something huge is about to go down.
The talk-show spinoff typically airs after the episodes that feature the biggest drama, and given the way Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 7 ended, we're inclined to believe the drama will be off the rails for our characters as they navigate uncharted waters.
As has been the norm for a while now, new episodes of Fear the Walking Dead will also be available early on AMC+ each week.
