John Wayne was riding remarkably high in the saddle in the early 1950s, knocking out one box office hit after another, when he decided to diversify his Hollywood profile by producing movies. So in 1952, the star of "Red River," "Sands of Iwo Jima," and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" hooked up with his longtime showbiz pal Robert Fellows, and together they founded Wayne-Fellows Productions. Wayne was picky about the people with whom he made movies, but Fellows more than earned his trust. According to Scott Eyman's "John Wayne: The Life and Legend," the Duke once said of Fellows, "What Bob doesn't know about the business isn't worth knowing."
Their first film together was the politically ignorant turkey "Big Jim McClain," which starred Wayne as a heroic special investigator for the House Un-American Activities Committee (Huac). In 1953, they released two movies,...

The best of Broadway and Off-Broadway were honored at the 2025 Drama League Awards and Nicole Scherzinger took home the most coveted acting award of the year!
The event took place on Friday afternoon (May 16) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.
While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.
Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

Sean Penn, the Academy Award winner and star of films like Mystic River, The Thin Red Line and Milk, is once again adding fuel to the already raging bonfire of Hollywood controversies. This time, he's done it by defending one of the industry's prime examples of "canceled" public figures. Penn's latest incendiary remarks regard fellow Academy Award winner Woody Allen, with Penn saying, despite the allegations of sexual abuse that have been leveled against the filmmaker, he would work with the Annie Hall director "in a heartbeat."
It is not a secret that Allen has become one of the most controversial figures in modern cinema. In the early 1990s, his ex-wife, actress Mia Farrow, accused him of sexually abusing their adopted daughter, Dylan, when she was seven-years old. However, many in Hollywood have largely ignored these accusations and continued to work with him. During the beginnings of the MeToo movement,...

Sean Penn expressed doubt that Woody Allen sexually abused his daughter, Dylan Farrow, and stated that he has no qualms about working with the director in the future.
In an open letter to The New York Times in 2014, Farrow came forward to accuse Allen, her adopted father, of molesting her when she was seven. The accusation came a few months after Farrow found out that Allen had begun a relationship with his then-21-year-old adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn. Allen has long denied Farrow’s allegations and was never charged with the crime. Four years later, Farrow wrote an op-ed in The Los Angeles Times, positing the question, “Why has the #MeToo revolution spared Woody Allen?”
Allen recently said that he may not make another movie due to his “cancellation” by Hollywood.
Penn previously worked with Allen in the 1999 musical comedy Sweet and Lowdown, along with actors Uma Thurman, Anthony Lapaglia and Samantha Morton.

Sean Penn is unconvinced regarding the allegations against Woody Allen.
The 64-year-old actor, who worked with the 89-year-old director in the 1999 film Sweet and Lowdown, expressed his doubt that Woody ever sexually abused Dylan Farrow in a recent interview.
“I’d work with him in a heartbeat — if it was the right thing. With these things, I don’t know anyone well enough to say, ‘100 percent, this didn’t happen, that didn’t happen’. The stories are mostly told by people that I wouldn’t trust with a dime. It just seems so heavily weighted in that way,” Sean said while on the “Louis Theroux Podcast.”
Back in the early ’90s, Mia Farrow and Dylan publicly accused Woody of molesting his adopted daughter when she was 7, but he has adamantly denied the allegations.
However, Sean explained why he is skeptical of the claims.

Woody Allen is without doubt a fine filmmaker, but his legacy has been tarnished by sexual abuse allegations against him. Some stars have rejected him entirely while others have stood by him. Sean Penn, who was directed by Allen in 1999's Sweet and Lowdown — which garnered Penn a Best Actor Oscar nomination — is one of the latter.
Mia Farrow has always maintained that Allen abused their adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, and Dylan has said this too. No criminal charges have ever been brought, however, and another adopted child, Moses, claims the abuse never happened. Allen has always denied the allegations, but things were always complicated by the fact that he married Farrow's adoptive daughter, Soon-Yi Preven. He's suggested in the past that Farrow made up the allegation as revenge for Allen becoming romantically involved with Soon-Yi.
Now, Penn shared how he believes the allegations may not be true. "I'd work with [Allen] in a heartbeat,...

Well, big weekly grosses and even bigger stars can’t guarantee a Tony Awards nomination.
Broadway does what Broadway wants, so no Best Play nominations (or anything else) for huge moneymaker Othello, and no Best Play noms for Good Night, and Good Luck, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Same for the critical favorite Cult of Love.
While Good Night and Dorian Gray weren’t nominated for Best Play, their big stars — George Clooney and Sarah Snook, respectively — were nominated for their performances, as expected. In fact, Dorian Gray, in which Snook plays all the characters from the Oscar Wilde novel, has the distinction of being the most nominated solo show in Tony history, placing in six categories: Snook’s performance, Kip Williams’ direction, and nods for scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

The 2025 Tony Awards nominations were unveiled Thursday morning, with the musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending leading the way with 10 bids apiece in a loaded season on the boards.
There was plenty of expected good news for the likes of Audra McDonald (landing her record 11th nomination for Gypsy), Mia Farrow (scoring the first major peer-group awards nomination of her storied career for The Roommate), and fellow first-timers Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Boulevard), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray), and Sadie Sink (John Proctor Is the Villain), it wasn't all bows and bouquets for stage set.
But with 42 musicals, plays, and revivals eligible — six more productions than last season — and several legitimate contenders vying for limited slots, there were more than a few notable snubs to go along with a handful of surprises that defied the odds. Here's our breakdown of the biggies.

One of the conventional elements used in horror films is the use of jump scares to elicit fear from the viewers. It was a very useful tool in creating tension and fear, making someone jump out of their seats in horror. However, as they were used more, it turned out that some horror films only managed to scare viewers using cheap jump scares.
The tool still works if used sparingly, but a good filmmaker sees that it isn’t the only way to scare his viewers. Some brilliant filmmakers have managed to give nightmares to their audience without using any such tools in their films. Here are ten such films that didn’t require a jump scare scene to keep you up at night.

The 1960s were a decade when the movie industry made leaps and bounds in terms of storytelling, technology, and expansion beyond the American borders. While there are no Tony Awards nominators within the ranks of the Outer Critics Circle, the list of nominations nevertheless provides important insight into what performances are registering with the industry during awards season. A major difference is that the Outer Critics Circle employs gender-neutral categories but still capped at five slots. So, the actors named here have muscled their way past a large field of competitors in an impressive showing of awards strength.

Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.
One of the most shocking results of the nominations is the complete omission of The Hills of California. The Jez Butterworth play is one of...

Film stars might seem to be making some inroads with this year’s New York Drama League Awards nominations – George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Paul Mescal, Mia Farrow and Jake Gyllenhaal, among others, are all accounted for – but stage stalwarts like Amber Gray, David Greenspan, André De Shields, Beth Leavel, and Idina Menzel are certainly well represented.

Since premiering in 1597, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet has endured as one of the greatest and most tragic love stories ever written. It's been performed countless times all over the world. On Broadway alone, there's been a grand total of 37 productions. Since the Tony Awards were established in 1947, there have been six revivals up for consideration, and all were snubbed for the prize.

Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was an excellent character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Because he was the chief engineer on the USS Enterprise-d, Burton was given the bulk of the show's trademark technobabble, often talking about subspace manifolds, phase inducers, and the state of the structural integrity field. Technobabble was vital on the series, as it allowed viewers to envision how complicated a vehicle the Enterprise actually was, implying that its navigation required hundreds of people overseeing dozens and dozens of systems. Its complexity made the Enterprise feel more realistic, and, dare I say, plausible.
At the center of it, Geordi wasn't just a master of the Enterprise's engine systems, but he was a nerd about it. He loved machines and complicated technical systems, eager to use his ingenuity to solve complicated engineering problems. All of...

Throughout her esteemed career, Mia Farrow has earned seven Golden Globe nominations (including a win for 1964's Guns at Batasi) as well as three BAFTA bids. Yet notably she has never been recognized at the Emmys, Oscars, or Tonys. This year, she might finally add a major peer group bid to her résumé: a Tony nomination in Best Actress in a Play for The Roommate.
In 1964, Farrow burst onto the scene in a major way. She not only had her aforementioned Golden Globe win for Guns at Batasi, but also her role as Allison MacKenzie on the first two seasons of Peyton Place. The former didn't result in an Oscar nom and, despite getting in at the Globes for the latter, it didn't translate to an Emmy nod. In 1968, she starred as the title character in Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. Her performance resulted in Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

Cults are scary enough in real life. As a general rule, they infatuate your loved ones, drain their bank accounts, abuse them and make them think they like it, and in absolute worst cases -- think Jonestown and Heaven's Gate -- it all ends in mass death. Making that scarier for horror movies can be tough, but it usually involves actual supernatural powers. Horror movies involving cults offer them the one thing reality can't: legitimacy. In a fictional story, the dangerous demon or deity worshipped by the cultists can be real, and provably so.
Like actual cult involvement, a significant chunk of horror movies about cults end badly for their main characters. Real-world cult deprogramming takes a long time, and isn't cinematic, so in the movies, there's usually either a simpler solution, like killing the leader, or no solution at all. Satan is frequently involved, either explicitly or implicitly, in...

Following the success of the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, many fans are surely discovering more details about the famed musician, and one of the shocking information they have certainly found out was his alleged beef with filmmaker Woody Allen.
It’s been a long time since Dylan made a startling statement about the veteran director, who was embroiled in a disgraceful controversy following his marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, Allen’s former girlfriend.
Woody Allen / Credits: CBS Sunday Morning Bob Dylan allegedly hated Woody Allen so much that he vowed to smack him in the face
It’s no secret that Bob Dylan displayed bouts of aggression throughout his career. Whether this was something innate in him or a coping mechanism to deal with the pressure of Hollywood fame, we don’t know, but we do know that he had once threatened to...

David Buchanan: The much-anticipated, Olivier Award-winning production of The Picture of Dorian Gray just opened, and we've both had the chance to attend Oscar Wilde's tale of aestheticism and debauchery. This mounting earned mostly glowing reviews from critics, but not everybody was equally enamored with the technology-forward take on the classic story. But before we dive into the modernity of it all, let's tackle the heart of the matter, which is Sarah Snook's bravura performance. Whether they’re symbols of purity, sarcastic sidekicks, or straight-up murder targets, unicorns have pranced their way into some of cinema’s most memorable moments. Sometimes they’re majestic and wise, sometimes they’re total divas, and sometimes they’re just there to be hunted by some evil king with serious control issues. From animated classics to bizarre indie flicks, unicorns have proven that they can be more than just Lisa Frank stickers brought to life. On the occasion of the release of Death of a Unicorn, we’re diving into the most famous unicorns ever to grace the big screen—whether they’re noble and heroic, tragically misunderstood, or just straight-up weird. The latest in our series of writers on their go-to comfort watches is a look back to Woody Allen’s smart and nimble 1993 comedy
Some sounds are immediately comforting. Gulls, trains, a kettle. The opening chords of I Happen to Like New York, which, despite Bobby Short’s vocals escalating in volume and emphasis Alarmingly Fast, signal the start of one of Woody Allen’s loveliest little pictures.
This 1993 comedy is like an unaffected Annie Hall – an impromptu reunion for Allen and Diane Keaton, playing essentially more functioning versions of those characters, 15 odd years on. Impromptu because although the first seeds of the idea came from an early draft of that 1977 film, the fairly elaborate plot was only properly written years later as a vehicle for Mia Farrow. She and Allen’s split during the end of the shoot on their previous film, 1992’s Husbands and Wives, kiboshed that plan.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during Fantastic Fest 2024. IFC Films opens “The Rule of Jenny Pen” in select theaters Friday, March 7, with a Shudder premiere on March 28.
When recommended a beach-read by a roommate he doesn’t want, the academic Judge Stefan Mortensen (Geoffrey Rush) scoffs, “All those books say the same thing.”
10 years after Julianne Moore won her Oscar for “Still Alice,” moviegoers could argue something similar about an indie drama casting an elite actor as a dementia patient in rapid decline. Those audiences will be the least prepared for “The Rule of Jenny Pen” and may feel its singular wrath stronger than most. That’s an enviable position to be in for one of recent memory’s more unusual thrillers — even if its lack of narrative convention veers more vexing in the end.

Even the most anti-war artists of the 21st century could bring themselves to violence in extreme circumstances — such as when they saw Woody Allen’s stupid, smarmy, unpunched face.
Nowadays, it would be neither newsworthy nor noteworthy for anyone with convictions to say that they wish they could give comedy filmmaking legend and accused child molester Woody Allen a smack that would make his head spin faster than ours did when Allen became his own father-in-law. Allen’s filmmaking career continued on mostly unimpeded after he left his romantic partner Mia Farrow for her 21-year-old adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn in 1992, but the court of public opinion has somewhat soured on the Annie Hall star and director in the decades since, especially after Allen’s biological daughter Dylan accused him of sexual assault.

With over a century’s worth of cinematic witches, Ruth Gordon’s turn in Rosemary’s Baby as Minnie Castevet broke the mold. To be fair, the reveal that the disarming, matronly Manhattanite serves Satan comes as a late-game twist, but even then, Minnie doesn’t revert to an archetypical witch form. Minnie Castevet remains as effervescent, stylish, and unflappable as she is from the start, even as Rosemary’s Baby ends on its iconic shocking final shot.

What’s with all the maternity angst lately? First came Nightbitch, then If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and now — in keeping with the rule that three makes it a trend — please welcome Mother’s Baby. Led by a fiercely compelling performance from Marie Leuenberger, Johanna Moder’s psychological thriller ticks along with exceptional confidence while it maintains ambiguity as to whether post-partum depression is feeding Julia’s paranoia or there really is something unsettling about her infant son, making her suspect a switcheroo at the private fertility clinic where she gave birth. It’s when the script starts providing answers that things get shaky.

Ronan Farrow revealed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance that he was the one to gently nudge his mother, Mia Farrow, back into acting. Farrow spent last fall on Broadway opposite Patti LuPone in Jen Silverman’s play “The Roommate.” Prior to that, she had a supporting run on the Ryan Murphy-produced Netflix series “The Watcher.” But she’s otherwise been off screens for nearly a decade.
“I look at a career like my moms and she’s such an incredible talent,” Ronan tells Variety’s Tatiana Siegal. “I run into directors and writers in my generation who are obsessed with her body of work and want her to share that and share her talent. Understandably, she has gone through periods of time where she’s reluctant to come back to it. Lord knows she’s had go of it in this industry, highs but also the dark side of it.

Actress Scarlett Johansson finally escaped our long-running photo gallery of the greatest living actresses to never receive an Oscar nomination. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Just recently, Kirsten Dunst had been in our gallery for years and then earned her first Academy Award bid for “The Power of the Dog.” Jamie Lee Curtis was fortunately removed from the gallery with not only a nomination but win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Emily Blunt was finally nominated for “Oppenheimer” years after winning her first SAG Award for “A Quiet Place.” And in 2025, both Demi Moore (“The Substance”) and Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) finally got their first ever nominations.

What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

It’s Liza with a Z. Not Lisa with an S. Liza Minnelli is among those rare, true living legends who seem irreplaceable. Irreplaceable both in that their talent is immense and that it literally appears nobody from a younger generation has the capacity to do as many things as well as she did them. In Liza we have an iconic singer, dancer, and actor. And let’s not forget a pioneer of fashion! One thinks of peers like Barbra Streisand and Cher as apt comparisons and very few others.
Bruce David Klein’s new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story is an unabashed celebration of the woman as told by all of her best friends. Celebrity talking heads like Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey speak effervescently about Minnelli. Singer and good friend Michael Feinstein emerges as the central storyteller of the film, alongside Minnelli herself.

Hereditary is now streaming on Netflix and quickly made it to the top charts, and this is a great reminder to watch this 97% horror movie from 57 years ago, which got a prequel in 2024. Ari Aster’s filmmaking career began in the late 2000s, gaining recognition for his 2011 short The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. Seven years later, Aster made his feature-directorial debut with Hereditary, a psychological horror movie starring Toni Collette. Hereditary was a critical and commercial success, turning Aster into one of the modern masters of horror.
Hereditary introduces the audience to Annie Graham (Collette), her husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), their 16-year-old son Peter (Alex Wolff), and their 13-year-old daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro). After the death of Annie’s secretive mother and another major family tragedy, disturbing family secrets are revealed. Annie soon realizes her family is being watched, and there are some sinister plans that put them in great danger.

Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is underway, and the film has just cast the parents of the titular hero. Based on the DC Comic of the same name, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will see House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock in the lead role of Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl in the Dcu. The roles of Supergirl's mom and dad have been cast, and they are fan favorites.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are set to play Supergirls' parents. The rest of the cast includes Eve Ridley as Ruthie Marye Knoll, a young girl who hires Supergirl to hunt down the man who killed her father, Krem of the Yellows Hills, played by Rust and Bone's Matthias Schoenaerts. Former Aquaman star Jason Momoa is set to play the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the film.

The debate about what constitutes The Great American Novel is never-ending, yet F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" always finds its way into this conversation. It might be tempting to simply reduce the author's work to an enduring portrayal of the Roaring Twenties, but Fitzgerald's book also cuts through the illusions while sustaining the enthralling mystery surrounding its titular figure. Once the mist dissipates, and both Jay Gatsby and his (only) friend Nick Carraway are laid bare for who they are, what remains is a profound sense of emptiness. Don't get me wrong: "The Great Gatsby" is a story about the inherent hollowness of spectacle, obscene wealth, and relationships of convenience that have the illusion of depth. However, once we confront the rare flashes of moving sincerity in a tale so luridly tragic, the empty lure of the green light at the heart of the novel takes on a terribly haunting sheen.

At the 82nd annual Golden Globes held on January 5, Demi Moore, who has been working steadily in Hollywood for decades, won her first ever competitive acting award thanks to Coralie Fargeat's body-horror hit "The Substance."
Moore beat out some stiff competition to win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award, including Cynthia Erivo in "Wicked: Part One" and Mikey Madison in "Anora," and her powerful speech about how women in the entertainment industry are constantly trying to measure up to a truly impossible standard was nothing if not deeply inspiring. Despite apparently being told that she would never be anything more than a "popcorn actress" by some foolish studio executive, Moore proudly stood on stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, telling women all over the world, "In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or...

While most horror fans would tell you that the ‘70s were the heyday for the genre, with titles like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and Halloween scaring their way onto screens and into our hearts, the ‘60s weren’t too shabby either. It’s the decade that gave us favorites like Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and - just before his life was flipped on its head the following year - 1968 saw Roman Polanski deliver the bundle of joy known as Rosemary’s Baby. The movie is steeped in eerie visuals and an unsettling plotline that keeps audiences guessing, while Mia Farrow’s top-tier performance is the glue that holds it all together. Right now, audiences can head over to Paramount+ where the Certified Fresh 97% Rotten Tomatoes film is now streaming.
