Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

Very much indebted to No Country for Old Men, punchy thriller brings damnation to smalltown Louisiana
Feature first-timer Nicholas Maggio makes an impression with this punchy crime thriller set in smalltown Louisiana. The director himself has cited Tarantino as an influence – though the borrowing is much more obviously from the Coens’ adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, with the seen-it-all sheriff and the sinister lizard-eyed killer coming in from the big city and making gas station attendants feel very uncomfortable by quizzing them insolently about their private lives.
John Travolta plays Sheriff Davis, a guy nearing retirement and trying not to think about the bad news he’s just got from his doctor. He takes a kindly interest in Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez), a young mechanic who is married with a young daughter; he soups up muscle cars and makes a few much-needed dollars at street races.

Death is the ultimate leveler. It comes for everyone in the end, no matter your station in life. Never is that more unsettlingly apparent than in 1988’s The Blob, directed by Chuck Russell from a script he co-wrote with Frank Darabont. The creature feature lets loose a gelatinous pink blob of goo upon the small town of Arborville, California, where it wreaks havoc with its insatiable appetite. It doesn’t care about archetypical hero or villain roles; its sole aim is to devour.
The eponymous Blob acts as a giant slithering stomach, dissolving its food for digestion with extreme acidity. That means that not only is the body count high for this ever-growing creature, but the deaths are deliciously mean-spirited and unforgettable thanks to gruesome special makeup effects from Tony Gardner and an incredible team of artists. Russell and Darabont reinforce the SFX showcase with unpredictability and meticulous characterization to...

One thing is clear after watching “Mob Land”: Kevin Dillon will not be the man to end America’s opioid crisis. In fact, it’s possible that the prescription drug epidemic currently gutting this country will not end at the hands of any single “Entourage” cast member.
The man formerly known as Johnny Drama stars in the film as Trey, a reckless drifter whose lime green Japanese sports car raises plenty of eyebrows in his small Maga town. But despite his life of petty crime and general inability to get his act together, Trey has a few thoughts about the opioids that have begun circulating through his town at an alarming rate.
He sees his friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while the local strip mall pill mill rakes in six figures by feeding their addictions. Through some combination of altruism and greed, he convinces himself that...

Writer-director Nicholas Maggio may not have intended to be self-critical when, fairly early in his debut feature “Mob Land,” he has one character observe to another about their failing small Southern town, “This whole place has become a fucking cliché.” But the longer this slackly paced rural noir continues, the more that dialogue seems in retrospect like fair warning. Borrowing freely from “No Country for Old Men,” “Collateral” and maybe a dozen or so other superior films, Maggio has cobbled together a modestly diverting, effectively atmospheric but blatantly derivative crime drama sprinkled with a few joltingly nasty plot twists.
It helps a lot that the first-time feature filmmaker has cast just about every role with an actor fully committed to their part. Better still, some of the briefly glimpsed supporting players do their bit to ratchet up the suspense by conveying sweaty desperation, darkly comical fury, or both.

Nicholas Maggio’s feature directorial debut, Mob Land, is a crime thriller in which two men rashly decide to pull off a robbery, frantically blunder their way through the job, and then face the devastating consequences of their actions. Sadly, the film itself is made with the same sort of overexcited energy, and the end result is similarly messy.
Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez) is a simple family man trying to make an honest living in a dying Dixie town. Here, drug overdoses are so common that the locals share the news of someone’s death like they would the results of a bad football game: worthy of quick commiseration but not interrupting your day over. When Shelby finds himself in dire financial straits, his brother-in-law, Trey (Kevin Dillon), suggests that they turn their town’s curse into a blessing by robbing a nearby pill mill. Shelby reluctantly agrees and, after the plan quickly goes awry,...

"This ain't your world... you don't control this." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Mob Land, an action thriller crime film from filmmaker Nicholas Maggio. They're sending this one to theaters in August if anyone is interested in watching. "Some debts can't be repaid with money." A young father gets in over his head after a robbery goes wrong. The Tulsa King meets Hell or Highwater in this gritty and tense southern thriller starring Hollywood icon, John Travolta, as the Sheriff looking to stop things before it gets worse. A struggling family man robs a pill mill, but after the theft turns violent, he's hunted by both the police and the Dixieland mafia. Starring Shiloh Fernandez, Stephen Dorff, Ashley Benson, Emily Tremaine, Timothy V. Murphy, with Kevin Dillon and John Travolta as Sheriff Bodie Davis. This seems like it has some intense action and plenty of style, not...

We don't talk enough about how 1958's "The Blob" and 1988's remake makes for one of the best original/remake combinations. They're both time capsules of societal paranoias from their respective eras. One is about a Pleasantville town banding together to defeat an outsider invader — the next is a government conspiracy flick about corruption within official departments. The '50s film plays around with a cranberry jelly-lookin' monster and cutting-edge photography tricks of the time that could manage such freaky sci-fi effects, while the '80s update enlists future SFX gurus like Tony Gardner to pull off awe-striking gelatinous carnage. Director Chuck Russell helped shape the future of practical-driven horror, showing what all-star craftsmanship can accomplish that digital animation will never touch.
In 1988's "The Blob," multiple scenes douse viewers with buckets of heebie-jeebies. Russell's Blob is a man, woman, and child eater that disintegrates flesh with its acidic slime — and we see it all.

"Let us play!!" Paramount Movies has revealed a funny trailer for Buddy Games: Spring Awakening, a surprise sequel to Josh Duhamel's bro comedy Buddy Games from 2019. The gang go back to where it all began - Spring Break! After the death of one of their own, Bobfather and the boys steal the urn and go on a trip to commemorate his life at the place where the Buddy Games began, but everything goes wrong when they find themselves in the middle of a spring break party they're a bit too old for now. The wild and crazy comedy stars the old crew Dan Bakkedahl, Kevin Dillon, Josh Duhamel, and Nick Swardson, plus James Roday Rodriguez, Lochlyn Munro, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jensen Ackles. I can appreciate the premise this time which seems to be: what if this isn't fun anymore, why are these people doing this?! Ha. The rest of it looks suitably ridiculous,...

Just how unlucky can someone get? That’s the question for Special Agent Justin Rosa (Kevin Dillon), arriving late for his first day on wire room duty. After being chewed out by surly superior Shane Mueller (Bruce Willis), the necessary exposition is shared about Justin’s role; to monitor and keep alive arms-smuggler Eddie Flynn (Oliver Trevena).
After examining the rules that he must follow, Justin is bored by the slow-moving pace of the job. As he leaves to use the bathroom, that’s the exact moment a Swat team descend on Eddie’s home to execute everyone inside. Justin panics upon returning as he sees the chaotic situation and breaks protocol by contacting Eddie directly to save his life.

Ashley Benson is a talented actor who’s appeared in several hit projects, including Pretty Little Liars. But shockingly, there was a time when Benson was told she was “too fat” for a role, despite being a size two.

Action films of all types and budgets are coming out left and right. With all the streaming services, direct-to-vod, and smaller theater runs, films that may not even have gotten greenlit at all years ago are making it to our eyeballs fairly easily. With so many titles coming, which ones should everyone look forward to? Here are five action films that are coming out relatively soon that we’re looking forward to.
Darkness of Man (2023)
The new Jean-Claude Van Damme flick just wrapped and should be coming out later this year. It’s being labelled as a neo-noir action thriller. The story follows an Interpol operative played by Jcvd who ends up entangled in a gang turf war when he takes an informant’s son under his wing. A Filipino man named James is claiming to be Johnny Depp’s long-lost son in a now-viral TikTok that has gained millions of views. According to the video, the realization that Depp may be his father came after years’ worth of unanswered questions about his biological father and abuse from his mother who would respond to his questions with “violence.”
James’ innovative, albeit very public, solution was to use TikTok as a platform to go through the evidence he has accumulated over the years.
According to a video posted to his account @Tanlife999, James first began thinking Depp may be his father after he found a picture of him alongside an Asian woman, whom he believes to be his mother, on the set of Platoon (1986), which was filmed in the Philippines.

A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are looking back at one of the coolest remakes ever made – the 1988 version of The Blob (watch it Here)! To find out what they think of this take on The Blob, check out the video embedded above.
A remake of the 1958 sci-fi horror classic, the ’88 version of The Blob was directed by Chuck Russell from a screenplay he wrote with Frank Darabont. Reaching theatres just one year after Russell and Darabont brought us the awesome A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, the Blob remake told the following story: In a tiny California town, high school students Brian, Meg, and Paul discover a strange, gelatinous substance that melts the flesh of any living creatures in its path. Dan Lauria will play former Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill in the upcoming biopic Reagan.
He’ll play opposite Dennis Quaid, who plays the 40th president.
Dan Lauria as Tip O’Neill
In a statement, director Sean McNamara said, “He and Dennis have the chemistry needed to portray Reagan and O’Neill as two politicians who were respectful adversaries.”
In Washington, the 1980s friendship between Reagan and O’Neill has long been viewed as a contrast to recent decades, as partisan rifts have gotten more personal.
Others in the case include Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari as Jane Wyman, Kevin Dillon as Jack Warner and Jon Voight as a fictional Kgb agent who tracks Reagan over the course of 40 years. Howard Klausner and Jonas McCord wrote the script.
Reagan is scheduled for a 2023 release, with shooting already completed.

What's your favorite melt movie? Don't worry, it's okay if you don't have one. It's an extremely specific horror sub-genre and it's certainly not to everyone's taste. The list is short and grisly, and to qualify a movie's narrative must involve several gnarly scenes of people getting destroyed in some horribly gloopy way. One-off melts like the Nazis at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" aren't good enough. There needs to be a bunch so suffice it to say that maybe you shouldn't eat your dinner while watching stuff like "Street Trash" or "The Beyond."
One of the best and most digestible melt movies is Chuck Russell's "The Blob," a gleefully nasty 1988 remake of the '50s so-called classic. I know the original has many fans, its own spine in the Criterion Collection, and a yearly Blobfest in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, but I think it's a film that...

Chances are if you've seen an American war film in the last 30 years, the name Dale Dye might ring a bell. Dye is a former Marine captain whose brief cameos and appearances are peppered throughout action films like "Under Siege," "Mission: Impossible," "Starship Troopers," and "Saving Private Ryan." After his first onscreen appearance in Tobe Hooper's "Invaders from Mars," Dye played Captain Harris in Oliver Stone's semi-autobiographical war epic "Platoon." The concept of actor boot camps is nothing new, and the intense soldier training that goes on at these grueling sessions does tend to bond the players together. The experience can also add some verisimilitude that pays respect to the actual soldiers that had to go through actual boot camp. Dale Dye's actor boot camps are legendary in the business. Apparently, the one that Charlie Sheen and the other actors went through during the making of "Platoon" in 1986 was particularly brutal.

"This can still end well." "But I don't want it to end well!" Saban Films has revealed a trailer for the thriller On The Line, the first English language feature made by a French filmmaker named Romuald Boulanger. It's opening in November if anyone is interested. A host takes a call, where an unknown person threatens to kill the showman's entire family on air. To save loved ones, the radio host will have to play a survival game and the only way to win is to find out the identity of the criminal. All while love on air. Mel Gibson stars as the host, with William Moseley, Alia Seror-o'Neill, Paul Spera, Nadia Farés, Enrique Arce, and Kevin Dillon. This sounds surprisingly similar to Hot Seat, another strange under-the-radar thriller this year about a bomb under the seat of someone who gets a call. This looks a bit campy and obvious with its plot,...

It’s the futuristic year of 2022. An awful incident had taken place in Benghazi. It’s a world where big corporations now run an essential function of society. It’s a bleak and depressing vision where people’s movements can be tracked by satellites. It seems like human nature de-evolves back to a blood-thirsty, and primitive instinct with warring factions convinced it’s survival of the fittest in a dystopian society that’s a prison.
This, ironically, also happens to be the backdrop of the 1994 film No Escape. Photo: 'Wire Room' The Hollywood Insider wishes the legendary Bruce Willis a speedy recovery. What to Expect from Wire Room In recent times, every Bruce Willis fan knows that the actor has retired from acting since he was diagnosed with aphasia, a disease that affects a person’s ability to communicate. This shocks the whole world since he is best-remembered for his role as John McClane, a loose cannon cop in the ‘Die Hard’ films. He was also noticed for choosing films that differed from the action archetype. One of those classic remakes is the 1988 version of The Blob (watch it Here), and we’re going to tell you all about it in the new episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series.
