Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox offered up a Halloween edition of their “Sunday Lunch” series over the weekend. The video features the married couple performing a cover of the David Bowie classic “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).”
The King Crimson guitarist and the new wave singer have mostly been posting archival “Sunday Lunch” episodes in recent months, but the Bowie cover is a brand new performance. In the video, both Fripp and Toyah wear makeup inspired by the Scary Monsters album cover, with Toyah looking eerily similar to Bowie.

Aside from the makeup, Toyah sports a black blazer with nothing underneath, singing the 1980 song as Fripp plays guitar. The video wraps up with Robert saying in a creepy voice, “Welcome to Toyah and Robert’s scary ‘Sunday Lunch,'” with Toyah playfully kissing the prog-rock pioneer on the side of his head.

Much like every other Christopher Nolan movie, it took a hell lot of time for him to prepare for his 2006 sci-fi thriller The Prestige. Further, given his reputation in the industry, actors came flocking to the sets of Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman’s film, to have a role. But fate had a bizarre twist, given how the actor whom Nolan wanted, had already rejected the offer.

Christopher Nolan wanted renowned actor David Bowie to appear in The Prestige as the real-life inventor Nikola Tesla. However, despite the iconic offer, Bowie had initially rejected the role, which led Nolan to practically beg the late actor. Thankfully, lacking Plan B, and having his eyes fixed on Bowie, the filmmaker finally managed to convince him.

John Lennon spent nearly a decade with The Beatles, working with a shifting group of people before he settled in with the Fab Four. After the band broke up, he went on to collaborate with a number of other artists. Lennon worked with many people in his career, but he said he only chose two of these people. They made up the most impactful working relationships of his life.
John Lennon said he only chose two people to work with
While in The Beatles, Lennon worked closely with Paul McCartney. Their collaboration made the band what it was. After The Beatles disbanded, Lennon began working with his wife, Yoko Ono. He said Ono and McCartney were the only meaningful partnerships he chose to have in his career.

Halsey has been so many different people over the past decade. The teenage pop rebel who spoke for a generation of “New Americana.” The Shakespearean conceptual artist who turned Romeo and Juliet into Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. The world-beating auteur of Manic. The industrial hate machine blasting Nine Inch Nails-produced aggression on If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power. But The Great Impersonator is her rawest, darkest incarnation yet. Halsey stands alone as she turns 30, confessing that she has no idea who she is anymore. As she sings in the opener,...

Christopher Nolan has been attracting the eyes of critics throughout his entire career. Although it was working with a minuscule budget of $6,000 and only played in a few theaters in the United States, his 1998 debut feature "Following" was praised for its tight storytelling and terse psychological underpinnings. Nolan then rose to international fame with his 2000 film "Memento," a neo-noir about a man unable to form new memories. Its backward-chronological-order plot was cleverly conceived and impeccably laid out, somehow coming to a traditional narrative climax even while running in reverse.
From there it was off to the races, so to speak. Nolan became a power player in Hollywood, directing gigantic movie stars like Al Pacino and Robin Williams in a remake of "Insomnia" and making a gigantic, zeitgeist-shifting hit with 2005's "Batman Begins." Nolan's three Batman movies are still spoken of with enthusiasm to this day. Their success also allowed him...

Luther Vandross passed away in 2005, but unreleased music from the R&b icon was made available Friday — a cover of The Beatles’ ‘60s hit “Michelle.”
Vandross’ close friend and vocal collaborator, Fonzi Thornton, discovered the tape following the singer’s death when he visited his family to look through his music archives, unseen videos, cassette tapes, personal effects, stage costumes and more. He then moved the archives to a room in his apartment for safekeeping.
“I found two cassettes labeled ‘Michelle’ in his handwriting — [I had] no idea what it was [and then I] played it! I realized it was a beautiful rendition of the Beatles classic that had been vocally and musically Lutherized,” Thornton tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I played Luther’s version for Jeff James, A&r at Sony and Dave Gottlieb, manager of the Vandross Estate, and we agreed it was such a find. We decided to save it until the right time — which is now.

Halsey isn’t a great impersonator. The singer’s fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator, draws its influence from the artists who have inspired her, from David Bowie to Britney Spears, but Halsey’s voice—both literally and figuratively—is distinctly her own. The album’s myriad references are weaved throughout its 18 tracks in service of her personal story, as she grapples with love, family, fame, and—especially—death.
Mortality, in fact, is a central theme throughout The Great Impersonator. “Well, it’s contagious, and you’ll catch it like a cold,” Halsey sings on “I Believe in Magic.” The subject is sometimes treated metaphorically, while other times the health issues Halsey has faced serve as a harbinger of death (as on “The End”). On “Panic Attack,” she seems starved for some kind of agency, as she tries to locate the thread between her body and her mind: “I’ve...

Stars: Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Stephen Graham, Andy Serkis | Written and Directed by Kelly Marcel
Tom Hardy returns as hapless Eddie Brock and his titular shape-shifting symbiote for the third film in the Venom franchise, which is also the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (which is so far mostly notable for being a universe without Spider-Man in it). This time round, it’s directed by British screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the first Venom movie and also wrote the poorly received sequel, 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Venom: The Last Dance begins with an amusing joke, effectively sticking two fingers up at the multiverse and walking back the tease from the post-credits sting on the last Spider-Man movie, which suggested Venom had entered the MCU (i.e. the same universe as Tom Holland’s Peter Parker). Back in his own universe,...

We may have shed a few tears at the end of Sony Pictures and Marvel’s “Venom: The Last Dance”, as we found it to be a fitting, yet emotional end, to the trilogy. Actor Tom Hardy has once again brilliantly reprised his role of journalist Eddie Brock and the film follows both Eddie and Venom as they are on the run from forces in both their worlds. The pair are then forced to make a devastating decision as they run out of options to save both themselves and humanity.
We definitely found “Venom: The Last Dance” to be the most entertaining of the trilogy and it takes viewers on a wild ride, both visually and emotionally. The action sequences are spot-on and the comedic moments are perfectly timed. Along with Hardy, “Venom: The Last Dance” stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach and Stephen Graham.

Tyler, the Creator is speaking to the times on “Noid,” the newest single from his upcoming album, Chromokopia. The song is part of Tyler’s straight-to-the-point album rollout, where the music and visuals — not his characteristic outspokenness — have taken center stage.
Last week, Tyler dropped “St. Chroma,” which featured him whispering over militaristic stomps. A week later, he dropped “Noid,” admitting he was “paranoid” about how stardom made him a target. “I can’t even buy a home in private/home invasion got my brothers dyin’,” he raps about the ever-present threat of celebrity burglaries.

The Doors and The Monkees were two of the bands that helped define classic rock from the 1960s. Despite this, The Doors’ Jim Morrison didn’t see The Monkees as his artistic peers. He once attacked the Prefab Four and another band that was popular around the same time. Surprisingly, The Monkees’ music was directly inspired by The Doors.

Sometimes, musical pioneers don’t get enough credit. For example, Question Mark & the Mysterians invented punk rock in 1966 with their hit “96 Tears.” Contrary to popular belief, several 1960s artists were producing punk rock songs, including The Beatles, The Doors, and The Monkees.

Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, out Friday, is a five-disc journey through his solo career, with hits, rarities, outtakes, and B sides. It ends with an excellent new song, “Star,” a collaboration with singer-writer-painter Amelia Barratt and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

With Janus possessing the much-needed restorations, Catherine Breillat is getting her biggest-ever spotlight in November’s Criterion Channel series spanning 1976’s A Real Young Girl to 2004’s Anatomy of Hell––just one of numerous retrospectives arriving next month. When it comes to the modern model of live music ticketing services, Robert Smith is disinterested in framing recent practices as being complicated. Last year, when the Cure announced their first U.S. tour in seven years, the band opted out of Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing model and used non-transferable tickets to avoid scalping by both the seller and re-sellers. In a recent interview, the frontman voiced his criticism of the now-standard practice of hiking up prices for fans while also taking aim at the artists who turn a blind...

After Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix‘s “Joker: Folie à Deux” bombed in its opening weekend and was hated by critics and audiences alike, it wasn’t likely to hold up well in its second weekend, and indeed it didn’t.
Instead, the box office phenom of the weekend was the breakout success of Damien Leone‘s grisly indie horror flick, “Terrifier 3,” once again starring David Howard Thornton as the smiling serial killer, Art the Clown, and Lauren Lavara as his final girl nemesis.

The "Terrifier" franchise is known for its stomach-churning gore and impressive low-budget effects, but the most surprising aspect of Damien Leone's films isn't the horror –- it's the fantasy. The property, which began in 2016 and continues this month with its third blood-soaked installment, has incorporated elements of the surreal and fantastical since pretty early on. At the end of the first film, Art the killer clown (David Howard Thornton) comes back to life, and in the second movie, a mystical sword, visions of a little girl, and an unholy birth all come into play.
These fantasy elements make the "Terrifier" franchise feel more ambitious and mysterious than the average hyper-violent slasher, but they often don't get talked about as much as the movies' headline-grabbing, barf-inducing kills. In an interview ahead of the "Terrifier 3" premiere at Fantastic Fest this year, /Film's Jacob Hall asked writer, director, and producer Leone about his '80s influences,...

On September 10, 2024, Remedy Entertainment updated the original Alan Wake to remove David Bowie’s legendary track Space Oddity from its soundtrack. The song has been a key element of the game’s ending, playing during the closing credits and leaving a haunting final impression on players.

This decision was a result of licensing changes, which have forced developer Remedy Entertainment to replace the song in all PC versions of the game. Instead of Bowie’s melancholic space ballad, an original song titled Strange Moons by composer Petri Alanko will take its place.

The update, which was sent out on September 10, 2024, affects the 2010 version of Alan Wake on PC platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Gog. Consoles and Remastered versions will remain unaffected.

Exclusive: Barbara Broccoli, with her theater hat on, is transferring the Sing Street musical to London. The play is based on John Carney’s charming 2016 coming-of-age movie about a group of skint schoolkids in 1982 Dublin who form a rock band to help them find love and forget their troubles.
The show, from the team behind Once, is another musical adapted from a film created by Carney.
Once, with James Bond producer Broccoli as lead producer, went on to win eight trophies at the 66th Tony Awards, including Best Musical and a Best Book win for playwright-screenwriter Enda Walsh, who performs the same writing duties on Sing Street.
Walsh confirmed that the Sing Street musical will preview at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, West London beginning July 8 for a limited run until August 23.

Jim Henson's 1986 film "Labyrinth" is a deeply beloved classic among kids of a certain age. It presents the raw sexuality of David Bowie, playing a sexy goblin lord in tights, his bulging package kickstarting millions of kids' puberties. At the beginning of the film, the main character, the 16-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) wants nothing more than to live in a fantasy world, happy to remain in her pretty-princess phase indefinitely. However, when Bowie's goblin king kidnaps her baby brother Toby (Toby Froud), she learns that living in such a world is wild and off-putting. Most of the film is a random, light adventure, but one scene points out that Sarah is unduly clinging onto her childhood trinkets.

Lana Del Rey is no stranger to classic rock. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that she wrote a song derived from The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” The track might be a rip-off, but Del Rey seems to understand the dark soul of the tune that she ripped-off.
Lana Del Rey took the soundscape of The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ in a similar direction
Listen to Del Rey’s music and you’ll hear lyrical references to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Lou Reed, Carl Perkins, Bruce Springsteen Elton John, David Bowie, and many other icons of that old time rock ‘n’ roll. However, she rarely takes too much obvious instrumental inspiration from these rock gods.

The third album in as many years from the Smile, the side project of Radiohead bandmates Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, Cutouts was born out of the same sessions that yielded last January’s Wall of Eyes. The strategy isn’t unlike that of Radiohead’s Kid A and Amnesiac, companion albums released less than a year apart. Yorke and Greenwood are restlessly prolific artists, so attempts to understand their contemporary output by comparing it to what they did a quarter of a century ago might seem like a fool’s errand. But those albums provide a case study for how a band can navigate their creative ambition in a more conceptual way than simply dropping a bloated double or triple album.
Like Amnesiac, Cutouts initially feels like a more challenging listen than Wall of Eyes, prioritizing atmosphere and mood over traditional songcraft. The album opens with two steadfastly dirge-like tracks that,...

“Maria” auteur Pablo Larraín brought the closer of his trilogy to the 62nd annual New York Film Festival on Sunday, September 29. Set during the last days of opera icon Maria Callas’ life, the film follows Angelina Jolie transforming into the role of a lifetime, singing through grief, tragedy, and despair.
“I honestly have been seeking the story for many, many years,” Larraín told IndieWire. “Unlike the other two movies, ‘Jackie’ and ‘Spencer,’ this is the story of an artist. It’s a story of a woman that ended up being very shaped by the opera that she sang on stage.”
“I always wanted to make a movie about opera,” he continued. “It’s not easy. It’s unusual for cinema, but those are two of my greatest loves in my heart, opera and cinema. I’m very happy to be able to put them together in a movie, about a...

With the release of Cowboy Bebop in 1998, Shinichirō Watanabe redefined anime, blending genres like sci-fi, jazz, and noir into a stylistic masterpiece that is still adored worldwide. Its unique characters, philosophical undertones, and genre-blurring style have earned it a place among the most iconic anime ever created.
