This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most quotable films in cinema history and defined the genre of film known today as the mockumentary.
Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut about an aging English metal band chronicled fame, groupies and their fateful tour and would set the bar for the style of film to satirize a subject depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. They often use the conventions of traditional documentaries, such as interviews and narration, to tell a fictional or exaggerated story.
Christopher Guest, who portrayed Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap, would go on to direct and star with an incredible ensemble cast in many of his productions that included Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge in the classic mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and Mascots.

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.

Beau should not sleep. Earlier in the day, when he tried to leave his apartment to see his mother, Beau left his door open with the keys still in the lock. When he returned to the door after turning back to retrieve a forgotten item, his keys were gone.
Worse, when Beau asks a man in the hallway about the missing keys, the passerby shouts, “You’re fucked, pal!”
Yes, the above scene does occur in Beau is Afraid, last year’s weirdo epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular disturbed man. But before he made Beau is Afraid as his third feature film, director Ari Aster introduced Billy Mayo as the fearful lead of his short movie, “Beau.”

"This summer - action has a new name." Magnolia Pictures has unveiled a very short teaser trailer for the Sundance 2024 hit film Thelma, from writer / director Josh Margolin. The film didn't win any awards, but it did win over the hearts of many Sundance viewers as one of the best of the fest. Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin's own grandmother, Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. Yes, she kicks some serious ass. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, June Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business. In addition to Squibb kicking butt as Thelma,...

Leo Woodall won’t forget his time on set of The White Lotus season two anytime soon. The actor said this week his experience on the show felt like “one big holiday.”
“It was one of those shows where, because there were so many characters and so many storylines, there were so many days off,” Woodall told People, adding that the free time meant he and his co-stars spent a lot of time vacationing together.
Woodall played Jack in The White Lotus season two, a British boy who flirted with Haley Lu Richardson’s Portia and assisted his non-biological uncle Quentin (Tom Hollander) in a plan to murder Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya. The second season of Mike White’s anthology show took place at a resort in Sicily, where the cast lived for several weeks during filming in 2022.
“It does feel like a world away now,” Woodall said of his time in Italy.

Exclusive: Mr. & Mrs. Smith is off to a promising start at Amazon.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 2 to become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries. It is now one of the Top 5 new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total viewers in the U.S.
Amazon, as is typical, remains tight-lipped about the exact viewership data. Next month, there will likely be more numbers available via Nielsen’s streaming charts.
It is also noteworthy that Amazon is specifically touting U.S. viewership, since that is the audience that Nielsen measures. In the past, the streamer has often opted to promote global viewership, which is much harder to quantify without proprietary data from the company itself.
Because of this, it’s expected that the series will make an appearance on those charts, especially because all eight episodes were released at once, which gives it...

Actor Julian Kostov is joining HBO’s The White Lotus, replacing Miloš Biković in the show’s cast.
Kostov (Shadow and Bone) will recur in the show’s third season, which is set to begin filming in Thailand this month. He joins the cast after HBO “decided to part ways” with Biković, following public criticism from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over Biković’s seeming support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a Jan. 24 social media post, the ministry wrote, “HBO, is it all right for you to work with a person who supports genocide & violates international law?” over a video clip of statements Biković has made about Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. The Serbia-born actor has worked in Russia for the past decade; he received an award from Russian leader Vladimir Putin in 2018 and became a Russian citizen in 2021.

“The White Lotus” Season 3 has added Julian Kostov to its cast.
Kostov will appear in a recurring role in the HBO series that was previously held by Miloš Biković. Biković was recently cut from the series, however, over his support of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the country’s war against Ukraine.

Even in this strange era of action films where characters played by Bob Odenkirk and Allison Janney have run around head-shotting hardened criminals with expert finesse, it’s safe to assume that nobody had money on 94-year-old June Squibb as the first great new action star of 2024. With Josh Margolin’s feature-length directorial debut, Thelma, the eponymous character, physically fragile but spiritually unbroken, has no intention of going quietly into that good night, and Squibb imbues her with a spark and presence that’s wholly unique to the actor, and on a very unlikely and unexpected quest for revenge.
Even compared to the motivations of Thelma’s often steely-eyed contemporaries in modern action cinema, though, not since the first John Wick have the stakes been so intimate and specific for a revenge flick. In Thelma’s case, a phone scammer manages to dupe her into sending $10,000 to bail her slacker grandson,...

HBO has dropped Serbian-Russian actor Miloš Biković from “The White Lotus” Season 3 after his alleged ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin went viral on social media.
“We have decided to part ways with Miloš Biković and the role will be recast,” an HBO spokesperson told IndieWire.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called out HBO’s casting of Biković last week, alleging the actor supports Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ social media account wrote on X January 24 that Biković “supports genocide & violates international law.”

That’s why it’s more than a bit discomfiting that the eighth and final episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is named “A Breakup.” True to the title’s promise, John and Jane break up in this finale and they break up hard. Here the Prime Video series begins to resemble its 2005 film inspiration more than ever as John and Jane engage in an epic life-or-death battle across Manhattan, culminating in a...

This post contains spoilers for Prime Video's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
At first glance, the new version of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" seems to share very little with the 2005 film of the same name. The new Prime Video series follows an entirely new Jane and John, this time played by Maya Erskine and series co-creator Donald Glover. While the Doug Liman film of the same name drops in on its married couple (played by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) years after they begin working as contract killers for dueling companies, the reboot shows audiences the inception of its central couple's relationship.
But there are still a few details the two barely-related stories have in common. Both follow a spy couple who (don't read on if you haven't finished the new show yet!) eventually end up tasked with taking one another out. Each set of Smiths also work for top-secret companies...

First comes espionage, then comes marriage. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine trade in their identities for the glamorous world of espionage as the title strangers-turned-arranged spouses in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” a fresh take on 2005's film of the same name, taking on high-risk missions and their high-risk relationship in one. Prime Video will premiere the new series in full this Friday, Feb. 2. You can watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Season 1 with a 30-Day Free Trial of Amazon Prime Video.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith definitely didn’t surpass expectations, it mostly left us with question marks for expressions because of how lackluster the show really was. I suppose you could say there are some good parts; you’ve got beautiful sets and some fun fashion choices, but most importantly, a bunch of cameos that are meant to enhance the show considering how dull it is otherwise. Not to say that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are incapable of holding our attention, but it’s probably a mix of the writing and the pacing of this show that had me completely bored by the end of it. And, no, even these incredible special appearances did not pique my interest in any way. However, they do add a little bit of fun, even if briefly, to the mostly tedious show. Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows spies in this new spyverse, where there is...

They say that with any good story, you can guess the ending just from the very first scene, at least to some degree. This is definitely the case with the new Prime Video series "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which opens up with a different Mr. and Mrs. Smith, both of whom seem to be enjoying a quiet, happy life off the grid. This peace is quickly disrupted, however, with them noticing the first few signs of a mysterious army closing in on them. Instead of running away again, this time the couple chooses to fight back; Mr. Smith is shot down early on, and Mrs. Smith walks out of cover to give a defiant, reckless final stand. It doesn't end well.
In the final moments of the season 1 finale, "A Breakup," it's that first episode's opening scene that's meant to play in the back of every viewer's head. Our new Mr.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” on Amazon Prime. Courtesy of Amazon Prime.
Donald Glover is a multi-talented young man. Proof lies in his boatload of awards and nominations for acting, writing, directing, producing and in several aspects of the music biz. Further proof lies in his having enough clout to attract a slew of stars for mostly brief appearances in this eight-episode action comedy. Alas, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is not his best work as co-writer or co-star.
Glover plays a guy recruited by an unspecified secret agency to pose as half of a normal, bland couple while remaining perpetually on call for any kind of covert op, from protection to swiping documents to whacking designated baddies. The “wife” they picked for him (Maya Erskine) shares all the assignments while helping to maintain their cover. As is par for such courses, they don’t like each other until they do.

As a followup to Atlanta and Swarm, Donald Glover adapting Doug Liman’s entertaining 2005 spy caper Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a television format is an unlikely choice. That said, there’s a certain timeliness to the premise of a married spy couple trying to survive missions and each other, ideally suited for every generation.
This iteration, created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a strictly millennial-geared update with a progressive heart and more romantic soul to round out its stealthy concept. Whereas this Glover and Maya Erskine-starring update likely won’t spur a pop culture impact as significant as the formerly-renowned Brangelina film did, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a sizably entertaining and meditative spy thriller fit for a millennial demographic.
Set in bustling NYC, two stranger spies, John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine), are interviewed for a potential spy gig by a mysterious agency they only speak to via texts.

Plot: Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?
Review: The 2005 film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, was one of the top-grossing films of the year despite mixed reviews. Written by Simon Kinberg and directed by Doug Liman, the movie was bolstered by the real-life romance between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The tabloid fodder of that relationship was free marketing for the film which was a mediocre action comedy about a married couple...

Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.
