2022 and The End of COVID-19 (?)
Most major and small, independent film studios were still reeling from the aftershock of the disruptions and loss of income caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by the end of 2022. However, there were still a lot of blockbusters and significant releases throughout the year such as 'The Batman', 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' so it is noteworthy to analyze this year in film.

- DirectorJoel CrawfordJanuel MercadoStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekHarvey GuillénWhen Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has burned through eight of his nine lives, he launches an epic journey to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish. This film defied all of my expectations and was even better than my wildest dreams with its spectacular animation, characters, style, and themes. This is by far one of the best animated films of all time, arguably better than 'Shrek' (2007).
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTilda SwintonIdris ElbaErdil YasarogluA lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.I absolutely love this film and the fact it has a rating of only 6.7/10 (as of 22/01/2024) just shows how most people are averse to visionary content and original fantasies. And these are the same people who complain that Hollywood is out of ideas.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsBrad PittJoey KingAaron Taylor-JohnsonFive assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train find out that their missions have something in common. There is something so inherently likeable and cool about this film by David Leitch that it is actually quite difficult to write down in a few words. What I can say is that this is, without a doubt, one of my favourite action films of all time.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsRobert PattinsonZoë KravitzJeffrey WrightWhen a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.*Watched at the cinema.
I love the Batman film franchise and I believe 'The Batman' with Robert Pattinson as The Caped Crusader is an exceptional addition with an emphasis on realism. - DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsTom HanksAustin ButlerOlivia DeJongeThe life of American music icon Elvis Presley, from his childhood to becoming a rock and movie star in the 1950s while maintaining a complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. One of the best biopics ever made and a fitting tribute to the life of the King of Rock and Roll.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsBrad PittMargot RobbieJean SmartA tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. An exceptional film by director and writer Damien Chazelle that is more about life than it is about the history and development of film in early Hollywood.
- DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. As someone who loves horror, Gordon Ramsay's shows, and Ralph Fiennes, I think that 'The Menu' was made for me. Despite some minor inconsistencies in the plot, I really enjoyed this superb film by Mark Mylod.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonKerry CondonTwo lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.Reminding me in parts of the exceptional 'The Secret of Roan Inish' (1994) due to the fact that both films intertwine elements of drama with elements of Irish mythology in a masterful manner, 'The Banshees of Inisherin' is one of the best dramas of 2022 with a lot of great themes such as that of the meaning of life, art, and friendship.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigEdward NortonKate HudsonTech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case. There is no doubt that the second film in the 'Knives Out' murder mysteries by Rian Johnson is nothing short of brilliant. Not perfect, but still brilliant.
- DirectorJared SternSam J. LevineStarsDwayne JohnsonKevin HartKate McKinnonKrypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, Krypto must master his own powers for a rescue mission when Superman is kidnapped. To be honest, I did not really have a lot of expectations for this film before I had watched it but I was pleasantly surprised at how well made and entertaining it is. 'DC League of Super-Pets' is a superb animated and family film.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsTom HanksMariana TreviñoRachel KellerOtto is a grump who's given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol, leading to a friendship that will turn his world around. There is so much to say about this film so it would be impossible to say it all here. What I think is important is that this film, in my opinion, reaches the same cinematic heights as 'Forrest Gump' (1994) with its exceptional drama, outstanding performances and inspiring messages and themes.
- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.Another undisputed masterpiece from Disney/Pixar about all the embarrassment and turmoil of growing up with all that Disney/Pixar magic.
- DirectorPierre PerifelStarsSam RockwellMarc MaronAwkwafinaTo avoid prison, a gang of notorious animal criminals pretends to seek being rehabilitated, only for their leader to realize that he genuinely wants to change his ways. There is something about this film which I really love and which makes me forget or ignore the minor little plot inconsistencies which would normally tarnish my experience. From the stylish animation to the hilarious characters, this is one of my favourite animated films of 2022 in a year full of outstanding animated films.
- DirectorMatthew WarchusStarsAlisha WeirEmma ThompsonLashana LynchAn adaptation of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical. Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results. While this recent adaptation of 'Matilda' might irritate fans of the 1996 film version or Dahl purists, this musical adaptation is nothing short of outstanding with fantastic acting and inspired moments.
- DirectorDaniel RoherStarsAlexei NavalnyYulia NavalnayaChristo GrozevFollows the man who survived an assassination attempt by poisoning with a lethal nerve agent in August 2020. During his months-long recovery he makes shocking discoveries about the attempt on his life and decides to return home.Following the death of Alexei Navalny under suspicious circumstances in a Russian prison, this fascinating documentary has received a lot of new popularity and interest. It is an important film about the beauty of freedom and the terror and evil of dictatorships and corrupt governments.
- DirectorJalmari HelanderStarsJorma TommilaAksel HennieJack DoolanWhen an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness tries to take the loot into the city, German soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him. This short review by Hideo Kojima, legendary creator of the 'Metal Gear' videogame series, expresses some of my thoughts on this film so I decided to share this instead:
"This is no longer a war movie. It is a MAD grind of a battle between terribly cool men. A lot of fight ideas that surpass Rambo, the immortal old man." - DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsAmber MidthunderDakota BeaversDane DiLiegroNaru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.Another excellent addition to the 'Predator' franchise. While I still prefer the 1987 original starring Schwarzenegger (no real surprise here considering that it is one of my favourite films of all time), 'Prey' is an unmissable action film in its own right.
- DirectorTom GormicanStarsNicolas CagePedro PascalTiffany HaddishMoviestar Nick Cage is channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan and a CIA agent. This film is a great contribution to 'metacinema' and is one of Nicholas Cage's best films in some time.
- DirectorDong-hoon ChoiStarsYoon Byung-heeKim Chan-hyungKim Dae-myungThe door of time opens between the swordsman who wants to seize the legendary divine sword at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and those who chase after an alien prisoner imprisoned in a human body in 2022.What a refreshingly creative film this has turned out to be from Korean director Dong-hoon Choi. While the fantastical style of this film might not be to everyone's taste, I, for one, absolutely love it!
- DirectorDanny PhilippouMichael PhilippouStarsAri McCarthyHamish PhillipsKit Erhart-BruceWhen a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.'Talk to Me' is truly an outstanding horror film from the land down under that is as original as it is well-written and well-researched on the subject of the occult on which it is based on.
- DirectorParker FinnStarsSosie BaconJessie T. UsherKyle GallnerAfter witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity.I believe that this is a memorable horror film with a great ending (do not expect a happy one) and original story, certainly one of the best horror films of 2022.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon PereaThe residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. While 'Nope' might not be as great as Jordan Peele's other masterpieces such as 'Us', it is still a great film with a lot of allegorical and symbolical resonance.
- DirectorScott MannStarsGrace Caroline CurreyVirginia GardnerMason GoodingWhen a high-rise climb goes wrong, best friends Becky and Hunter find themselves stuck at the top of a 2,000-foot TV tower. This has to be one of my favourite films and surprises of 2022, hands down. As someone who suffers from vertigo, the story was very frightening and I love the plot twist near the end.
- DirectorSophie KargmanStarsKiersey ClemonsAlex WolffJim GaffiganAn awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity and her under-the-radar true-crime podcast by solving the disappearance of a classmate.I personally really enjoyed this little gem of a mystery film. In a lot of ways it is similar to 'The Talented Mr Ripley' (1999) but the difference is that 'Susie Searches' is adapted for these modern times and is more family-oriented.
- DirectorVictor DanellStarsInez Dahl TorhaugJesper BarkseliusEva MelanderA rebellious teen placed in foster care suspects her father is not dead but has been abducted. She is determined to find out the truth with help from a UFO association.Undoubtedly one of the best Swedish and European sci-fi films ever released, do not miss out on 'UFO Sweden' if you love sci-fi.
- DirectorScott CooperStarsChristian BaleHarry MellingSimon McBurneyA world-weary detective is hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet. Stymied by the cadets' code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case - a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.A seemingly underappreciated crime and mystery film starring Christian Bale with a lot of literary references that is sure to delight both fans of film and literature alike.
- DirectorFelix van GroeningenCharlotte VandermeerschStarsLupo BarbieroCristiano SassellaElena LiettiAn epic journey of friendship and self-discovery set in the breathtaking Italian Alps, The Eight Mountains follows over four decades the profound, complex relationship between Pietro and Bruno. This Italian film is nothing short of a hidden gem but the story is more character-driven than plot-driven and the English soundtrack is a little jarring for me.
- DirectorRichard WongStarsEugenio DerbezSamara WeavingMax GreenfieldA movie star enlists a parking valet at a Beverly Hills restaurant to pose as her lover to cover for her relationship with a married man.'The Valet' is an intelligent, insightful, entertaining, and provocative drama about race, family, and love in these modern times. The acting by Eugenio Derbez and Samara Weaving is great but a special mention has to go to Carmen Salinas in her last performance.
- DirectorChris WilliamsStarsKarl UrbanZaris-Angel HatorJared HarrisWhen a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters - and make history to boot.'The Sea Beast' is undeniably a huge milestone from Netflix animation as it features some of the most beautiful and advanced animation and C.G.I. that I have seen in a long time.
- DirectorGyu-tae ParkStarsGo Kyung-pyoLee Yi-kyeongEum Moon-sukA comical encounter between South and North Korean soldiers over the 5.7 billions won lottery that crossed the military demarcation line on the windAn exceptional Korean comedy and drama film with substantial themes like those of unification and respect between each other.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJason MomoaMarlow BarkleyChris O'DowdA young girl discovers a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland, and with the help of an eccentric outlaw, she traverses dreams and flees nightmares, with the hope that she will be able to see her late father again. There is so much to love about this lively and imaginative family adventure film that it is hard to know where to begin to describe it. I think the name 'Slumberland' could have been different, it does not capture the 'vibe', so to speak, of such a film.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsRyan ReynoldsWalker ScobellMark RuffaloAfter accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future.'The Adam Project' is a refreshing and brilliant sci-fi film starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, and Mark Ruffalo (all excellent). The only disappointment for me was the one-dimensional villain Maya Sorian and her company Sorian. Something could have been shown to portray Sorian's destruction of the future world of 2050, for example, not nothing.
- DirectorSean AndersStarsWill FerrellRyan ReynoldsOctavia SpencerA musical version of Charles Dickens's story of a miserly misanthrope who is taken on a magical journey. As one of the better and more inspired adaptations of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' in a long while with musical elements reminiscent of the adaptations from the 1970s, what a fun surprise 'Spirited' turned out to be!
- DirectorJeff FowlerStarsJames MarsdenJim CarreyBen SchwartzWhen the manic Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Tails is all that stands in their way.*Watched at the cinema.
While arguably not as good as the first 'Sonic the Hedgehog' film, this is still a perfectly enjoyable and impressive film in its own right. - DirectorJeremiah ZagarStarsAdam SandlerQueen LatifahJuancho HernangomezA basketball scout discovers a phenomenal street ball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA.While I am not really a sports or a basketball fan, there is a lot to appreciate in this great drama film starring Adam Sandler in an unusual role.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsTom BatemanAnnette BeningKenneth BranaghWhile on vacation on the Nile, Hercule Poirot must investigate the murder of a young heiress. As a fan of Agatha Christie and the murder mystery novels of Hercule Poirot I did not know what to expect in terms of of an adaptation in film. 'Death on the Nile', however, exceeded my expectations and some scenes look beautiful.
- DirectorRuben ÖstlundStarsThobias ThorwidHarris DickinsonCharlbi DeanA fashion model celebrity couple join an eventful cruise for the super-rich.Described as "wickedly funny", 'Triangle of Sadness', winner of Palme d'Or and nominated for 3 Oscars, might be better described as a "wicked satire" of the wealthy and pretentious. Some scenes are slightly unbearable in this 2 hour and a half long film, however, and there are some inconsistencies in the plot (to describe even one in detail would be impossible here).
- DirectorZach CreggerStarsGeorgina CampbellBill SkarsgårdJustin LongA woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems. There is no doubt that this is a very well-made horror film (a fact which definitely contributes to its 7.0 rating as of 27/11/2023). However, the different stories and events near the end seem convoluted, at best, to me and I would have personally written the film differently.
- DirectorTobias LindholmStarsEddie RedmayneJessica ChastainDenise PillottAn infamous caregiver is implicated in the deaths of hundreds of hospital patients.Based on a true but shocking story, 'The Good Nurse' is certain to be an enjoyable watch and features a great performance by Eddie Redmayne.
- DirectorLaure de Clermont-TonnerreStarsEmma CorrinJack O'ConnellMatthew DuckettAn unhappily married aristocrat begins a torrid affair with the gamekeeper on her husband's country estate.A fine adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's famous last novel with some beautiful cinematography.
- DirectorAndy SurianoAnt WardStarsBen SchwartzOmar Benson MillerBrandon Mychal SmithWhen a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning, Leo is forced to rise and lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species. As a big fan of the T.M.N.T. franchise from an early age, I believe that this is a great re-imagining of my beloved childhood series.
- DirectorSophie HydeStarsEmma ThompsonDaryl McCormackIsabella LaughlandNancy Stokes, a retired school teacher, is yearning for some adventure, and some sex. And she has a plan, which involves hiring a young sex worker named Leo Grande.Described as "sex-positive" on the film poster, '
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' challenges a lot of one-dimensional perspectives about sex and life. It is a little 'dialogue heavy' at times but the final fourth act is worth it. - DirectorJong-seok YoonStarsSo Ji-seobYunjin KimIm Jin-ahA story about a man who has been pointed out as the culprit of a locked-room murder and his lawyer approaching the truth. While this film is essentially a South Korean remake of the masterful Spanish film 'The Invisible Guest' ('Contratiempo' in Spanish, 2016), 'Confession' is still exceptional in its own right.
- DirectorYong-sun JoStarsSung Byoung-sookJang GwangJeong Ho-binThe damage caused by the humidifier disinfectant disaster reveals the truth of the mysterious deaths of victims without perpetrators, and informs the world of the pain of the victims and their bereaved families, which is still ongoing.A great drama based on a true story which reminded me a lot of 2010's 'Extraordinary Measures' starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser.
- DirectorAlbert CallerosJohn RiceStarsMike JudgeGary ColeNat FaxonAfter a "creative" judge sentences them to space camp, a black hole sends our adolescent heroes 24 years into the modern future where the duo misuse iPhones, embark on a quest to score, and become targets of the Deep State. As someone who does not consider himself to be Beavis and Butt-Head's biggest fan, this film is a notable exception and is certainly one of the best animated films for adults in a while.
- DirectorJosh GordonWill SpeckStarsJavier BardemWinslow FegleyShawn MendesFeature film based on the children's book about a crocodile that lives in New York City.A fantastic and charming family film which is sure to entertain children as much as adults.
- DirectorHanna BergholmStarsSiiri SolalinnaSophia HeikkiläJani VolanenA young gymnast, who tries desperately to please her demanding mother, discovers a strange egg. She hides it and keeps it warm, but when it hatches, what emerges shocks them all.The Finnish equivalent of Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. If you need more explanation than that then, unfortunately, you need to read a book.
- DirectorPaco PlazaStarsAlmudena AmorVera ValdezKarina KolokolchykovaA Paris model must return to Madrid where her grandmother, who had brought her up, just had a stroke. But spending just a few days with this relative turns into an unexpected nightmare.*The actual release date of this film in Spain was January 28th, 2022.
'La Abuela', as this Spanish film was originally called, is an original and sometimes horrifying film which really reminded me of my own grandmother (but not in a good way, unfortunately). - DirectorBenjamin MousquetBen StassenStarsJoe OchmanMichael OrnsteinDino AndradeFollows a young hero born half chicken and half hare. Eager to fit in and feel loved in spite of his differences, he is obsessed by adventuring in spite of his clumsiness.'Chickenhare' is a great animated film which is ideal for the whole family and is inspired by the 'Indiana Jones' franchise amongst others.
- DirectorPeter FlinthStarsNikolaj Coster-WaldauJoe ColeHeida ReedIn 1909, two explorers fight to survive after they're left behind while on a Denmark expedition in ice-covered Greenland.Based on a true story of courage and true patriotism when it still existed, 'Against the Ice', being co-written by and starring our favourite Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (this film also stars Charles Dance in what has to be a Lannister reunion), is a great 'survival' film.
- DirectorKristina BuozyteBruno SamperStarsRaffiella ChapmanEddie MarsanRosy McEwenStruggling to survive with her father after the collapse of Earth's ecosystem, 13-year-old Vesper must use her wits, strength and bio-hacking abilities to fight for the future.I believe that this film is one of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time as I really love the plethora of original concepts to be found here, especially those related to biotechnology and adaptive bioengineered flora and fauna.
- DirectorTi WestStarsMia GothJenna OrtegaBrittany SnowIn 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.Masterfully filmed in pastiche in the style of the late 1970s, 'X' is one of the best and most original horror films of the year. 'X'ceptional.
- DirectorScott DerricksonStarsMason ThamesMadeleine McGrawEthan HawkeAfter being abducted and locked in a basement, a boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims.*The official U.K. and U.S. release dates of June 2022 are considered here as the actual release dates.
An enjoyable thriller based on a story by Joe Hill, 'The Black Phone' is very easy to recommend. - DirectorJoseph WinterVanessa WinterStarsJoseph WinterMelanie StoneJason K. WixomA disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.I really found 'Deadstream' to be a disturbing and unnerving horror film which blends modern live-streaming and found footage elements with traditional jump scares.
- DirectorDamien LeoneStarsLauren LaVeraDavid Howard ThorntonElliott FullamAfter being resurrected by a sinister entity, Art the Clown returns to the timid town of Miles County where he targets a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night. So gruesome and gory that it reportedly made people puke and pass out during its screening according to most media reports at the time, 'Terrifier 2' is not to be missed even with a slightly clichéd ending. I also love that this film still uses practical rather than digital special effects.
- DirectorDavid FrankelStarsBryan CranstonAnnette BeningRainn WilsonBased on the true story about long-married couple Jerry and Marge Selbee, who win the lottery and use the money to revive their small town. There is a lot to appreciate in this happily human film based on a true story (in all probability). What I really liked was the altruistic element in Jerry and Marge's story, something which seems to be lost in today's society.
- DirectorHalina ReijnStarsAmandla StenbergMaria BakalovaMyha'laWhen a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong.I found the ending of this film to be truly original and memorable which makes 'Bodies Bodies Bodies' stand out from most other horror films after 2020, even if it feels intended for 'Gen Z' at times as some other reviewers here on IMDB have noted.
- DirectorChristian TafdrupStarsMorten BurianSidsel Siem KochFedja van HuêtA Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.A very interesting and thought-provoking film about the modern and politically-correct tendency of today's society to stay inactive when faced with evil or certain problems and to be easily submissive or coerced. In a way, this film seems to suggest, this is the ultimate horror and has dire consequences.
- DirectorAnirudh IyerStarsAyushmann KhurranaJaideep AhlawatGautam JoglekarYouth Icon. Superstar. Action Hero. At the age of just 30, Maanav was at the peak of his career when he got caught up in an accident while filming in Haryana. Maanav, who was once a household name, is now living in hiding. An entertaining thriller which is sure to delight all fans of the genre. It is evident that the filmmakers and actors really made every effort to make 'An Action Hero' stand out from the rest.
- DirectorAnna FoersterStarsAllison JanneyJurnee SmollettLogan Marshall-GreenA storm rages. A young girl is kidnapped. Her mother teams up with the mysterious woman next door to pursue the kidnapper, a journey that tests their limits and exposes shocking secrets from their pasts.Despite the rather uninspired storyline, director Anna Foerster has done a great job of elevating what could have been a mediocre film into a rather gritty and well-made action thriller. The lead performance by Allison Janney as the titular Lou is also great.
- DirectorLoren BouchardBernard DerrimanStarsH. Jon BenjaminKristen SchaalDan MintzWhen a sinkhole in front of Bob's Burgers threatens the Belchers' plans for a successful summer, Bob and Linda try to keep their business going, while the kids attempt to save the restaurant by solving a mystery. As someone who loves the 'Bob's Burgers' T.V. series, I think this film based on the series had exceeded most of my expectations but never managed to be truly outstanding either.
- DirectorFajar NugrosStarsNaysila MirdadDimas AnggaraLydia KandouGrappling with an unplanned pregnancy, a woman turns in desperation to a mysterious older couple who promise to take care of her baby.Originally titled 'Inang' in Indonesian (the film's country of origin), 'The Womb' is an original horror film which, although it has some flaws arising mainly due to limited production values, has some great and memorable moments too (such as the 'nightmare' scenes, for instance).
- DirectorClay KaytisStarsPeter BillingsleyErinn HayesRiver DroscheFollows the now-adult Ralphie as he returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child, reconnecting with childhood friends, and reconciling the passing of his Old Man.A heart-warming Christmas film with a lot of universal themes such as those of family and love. Even if there is nothing truly remarkable about the plot, it is all presented and narrated so beautifully.
- DirectorJoachim BackStarsJon HammDanny PudiSarah GadonAs Orson, The Authority's newest employee, finds himself trapped in the absurdities of corporate life, his alienation deepens when he discovers a room he's told doesn't exist. An excellent film about mental health and corporate life (or death, depends how you look at things). Its current rating of 6.0 (as of 30/01/2024) shows that it is underappreciated.
- DirectorJianming HuangStarsCong LiuYi-ai AiKai WangIn order to cure Hei Ling, a terminal illness, the Kunlun healer, Bai Ze, was banished after accidentally destroying an island. Seven years later, he returns to the island to seek redemption.A fantastic animated film intended for the entire family but might be better suited for young adults rather than young children.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsTom HollandMark WahlbergAntonio BanderasStreet-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. As a big fan of the 'Uncharted' videogame franchise on the PlayStation, I can honestly say that I loved this film adaptation even though it is not as great as the games which inspired it.
- DirectorPatrick HughesStarsKevin HartWoody HarrelsonJasmine MathewsThe world's deadliest assassin and New York's biggest screw-up are mistaken for each other at an Airbnb rental.Kevin Hart has his fair share of detractors but I never understood all the criticism and negativity in his regard. I found 'The Man from Toronto' to be one of the best comedies of 2022 with a lot of action to keep everyone entertained.
- DirectorTalia OsteenStarsMika AbdallaJake ShortFortune FeimsterAvery, a teenager with a tendency towards perfectionism, enlists her friend Larson to help her prepare for her first time with her long-distance boyfriend. Why this film has a current rating of 5.3 here on IMDB (as of 13/07/2023) is a mystery to me. This is a creative film which portrays the topic of sex and love in an appealing (excuse the pun), original, and interesting manner. Excellent.
- DirectorAnne FletcherStarsBette MidlerSarah Jessica ParkerKathy NajimyTwo young women accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world. As someone who had never watched the original 'Hocus Pocus' film from 1993 (I know, shocking right?) I found this sequel, released almost thirty years later, to be a great family film even if some moments are a little inappropriate for young kids. I really loved the performances from the three main witches (the Sanderson sisters) as they really seemed to be enjoying themselves.
- DirectorDerek DrymonJennifer KluskaStarsAndy SambergSelena GomezKathryn HahnAfter one experiment, Johnny turns into a monster and everyone else becomes human. Now it has to be seen whether they will be able to reverse this experiment. This film feels like a fitting end to the beloved 'Hotel Transylvania' franchise. It feels a little different than the previous entries, mainly due to a change in direction, but since one of the principal themes of the story is about change I believe that this is appropriate.
- DirectorPeggy HolmesJavier AbadStarsEva NoblezadaSimon PeggJane FondaThe curtain is pulled back on the millennia-old battle between the organizations of good luck and bad luck that secretly affects everyday lives.Another great imaginative and fun animated film which is ideal for the whole family.
- DirectorJ.J. PerryStarsJamie FoxxDave FrancoNatasha Liu BordizzoA hard-working, blue-collar dad just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires. While the concept and style of this film are truly original, refreshing, and downright cool, I feel that this film is needlessly dragged down by a clichéd ending.
- DirectorEnrique GatoStarsÓscar BarberánLuis PosadaMichelle JennerTad accidentally unleashes an ancient spell, endangering the lives of his friends Mummy, Jeff, and Belzoni. With everyone against him and only helped by Sara, he sets off on an adventure to end the Curse of the Mummy.A great animated adventure film which is ideal for the whole family. 2022 has been a noteworthy year for Spanish films.
- DirectorAaron NeeAdam NeeStarsSandra BullockChanning TatumDaniel RadcliffeA reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure.Starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, 'The Lost City' is a great adventure film. Its light-hearted tone makes it ideal for the whole family. The cameo appearance by Brad Pitt was truly superb as well. Only Fairfax's character (Daniel Radcliffe) lets it down slightly for me.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsEddie RedmayneJude LawEzra MillerAlbus Dumbledore knows that Gellert Grindelwald is moving to take control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he asks Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team on a dangerous mission.I just love the fantasy and imagination of the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise and this third addition to the series is no stranger to these. However, despite the best intentions of the actors, I felt that the plot is not as comprehensible as it could have been.
- DirectorAndrew CummingStarsIola EvansArno LüningRosebud MelarkeyIn the Old Stone Age, a disparate gang of early humans band together in search of a new land. But when they suspect a malevolent, mystical being is hunting them down, the clan are forced to confront a danger they never envisioned.Originally called 'Out of Darkness', I enjoyed this film despite what must be some obvious anachronisms (like the facial hair of Adem which looked like a goatee). This film had a lot of potential and I liked the ending.
- DirectorNico van den BrinkStarsSallie HarmsenAlexandre WillaumeAnneke BlokBetriek lives on the edge of a bog in the Netherlands. When she and her family are attacked by a stranger one night, Betriek sets out to find an explanation. She discovers that something is chasing her.I enjoyed this Dutch horror film, which equals in quality and production values, if not surpasses, most horror films from Hollywood these days.
- DirectorLorcan FinneganStarsEva GreenMark StrongChai FonacierA fashion designer suffers from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband until help arrives in the form of a Filipino carer who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.Another underrated so-called 'supernatural thriller' which does not deserve its current rating of 5.8 (as of 08/02/2023) as it is an engaging and interesting film with a great performance by Eva Green.
- DirectorMatt SobelStarsNaomi WattsCameron CrovettiNicholas CrovettiTwin brothers arrive at their mother's house and begin to suspect that something isn't right.A great psychological film with a memorable ending and plot twist, 'Goodnight Mommy' also features great performances by Naomi Watts and Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti.
- DirectorJulius AveryStarsSylvester StalloneJavon 'Wanna' WaltonPilou AsbækA young boy learns that a superhero who was thought to have died after an epic battle twenty-five years ago may in fact still be alive. An original superhero film with a surprisingly refreshing plot twist. Sylvester Stallone and Javon 'Wanna' Walton are great together.
- DirectorPeter FarrellyStarsZac EfronRussell CroweJake PickingA man's story of leaving New York in 1967 to bring beer to his childhood buddies in the Army while they are fighting in Vietnam.Based on the novel of the same name by John 'Chickie' Donohue's biographical story of his trip to Vietnam during the war to deliver beer to his childhood friends in the army, this seemingly banal or idiotic tale explores a lot of fundamental themes in an entertaining fashion.
- DirectorAnthony HayesStarsZac EfronAkuol NgotThiik BiarIn the not too distant future, a drifter travelling through the desert discovers the largest gold nugget ever found. He must guard it from thieves amid harsh conditions and wild dogs while waiting for his partner to return. An entertaining film starring Zac Efron with a memorable ending which does not deserve its current rating of 5.4 here on IMDB (as of 08/08/2023).
- DirectorRick MoralesStarsManny JacintoDavid WenhamArtt ButlerAs Kano and the Black Dragon wreak havoc around the globe, a young warrior named Kenshi will have to rise above his own limitations and take on the looming threat of Outworld. As someone who loves the 'Mortal Kombat' (M.K.) videogame franchise, I am happy about these sort of adaptations which try to expand the M.K. universe and make full use of the potential of such a fantastic variety of characters.
- DirectorCharles KinnaneDaniel KinnaneStarsKevin JamesTaylor LautnerRob SchneiderNew Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton coaches his son's 6th-grade football team while he is being suspended for the entire 2012 season as a result of his role in the Saints' Bountygate scandal. If you know what to expect from a Happy Madison production, I think that this is an above average effort with a charming ending.
- DirectorGeorge KirbyHarry KirbyStarsScott AdkinsRay StevensonPerry BensonThe Accident Man, is back and this time he must beat the top assassins in the world, to protect the ungrateful son of a mafia boss, save the life of his only friend and rekindle his relationship with his maniacal father figure.Originally titled 'Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday', this sequel to the 2018 original is as fun as it is stylish and original, despite a rather mediocre introduction. I had to give it an extra point for being shot in the beautiful island of Malta, which is described as a "gem" in this film and which I am proud to call my country.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others. While I was not impressed with the introduction, I loved how the story developed and the style is distinctively Sam Raimi. If you love Marvel films, you are certain to love this.
- DirectorRob ZombieStarsSheri Moon ZombieJeff Daniel PhillipsDaniel RoebuckReboot of "The Munsters," that followed a family of monsters who moves from Transylvania to an American suburb.Based on the original 1960s American sitcom of the same name, I do not understand why this Rob Zombie film was so poorly received. It has a lot of nice touches and I loved the pastiche and colourful style.
- DirectorTim LightellStarsAlice BridgforthCherilynn BrooksAsa FagerComedian Sal Howard has a big problem: his wife, scientist Dr. Dana Howard, doesn't want kids. To save his marriage, Sal tricks Dana into thinking he's become a real baby to show Dana the joys of motherhood. With just 57 ratings (as of 09/10/2023), this is an overlooked farce about life despite having limited production values. The ending of this film really puts things in perspective and typifies the farcical nature of the characters' choices and their lives.
- DirectorTodd GreenleeStarsJasper HammerBen HallDanielle Evon PloegerA disgraced podcast host interviews an eccentric farmer who claims to have a monster living in the woods near his house.A very interesting film which makes a lot out of a limited budget. Although in the beginning there were what seemed like plot holes to me, it turned out that they were not after some discussion with another film fan (my girlfriend Charlene).
- DirectorRomain GavrasStarsDali BenssalahSami SlimaneAnthony BajonHours after the tragic death of their youngest brother in unexplained circumstances, three siblings have their lives thrown into chaos. This French film about anarchy offers an insightful and almost prophetic commentary about religion, state, and society (it would be impossible to discuss in more detail here).
- DirectorEric AppelStarsDiedrich BaderDaniel RadcliffeLin-Manuel MirandaExplores every facet of Yankovic's life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like 'Eat It' and 'Like a Surgeon' to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.I love parodies and 'Weird: The Al Yankovic Story' combines elements of a biography and outright falsifications or half-truths to create one of the more memorable and original parodies in years. You wouldn't like this film if you were Madonna or one of her fans though.
- DirectorFlorian SiglStarsJack WolfeF. Murray AbrahamNiamh McCormackFollows 17-year-old Tim Walker as he travels from London to the Austrian Alps to attend the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a centuries-old forgotten passageway into the fantastic world of Mozart's "The Magic Flute."Based on the famous opera by Mozart, 'The Magic Flute' is a very original family fantasy film that manages to exceed all expectations for these genres, despite some flaws (the ending was a slight disappointment in my opinion, for example).
- DirectorJames Cullen BressackStarsKristos AndrewsGaladriel StinemanMaurice LaMarcheTwo Playwrights are tasked with creating the next avant-garde thriller; but as they write, the story comes to life and their own emotions and arguments begin to manifest on film.I am honesty surprised by this film's very low rating (4.5 as of 16/03/2024). I found this to be an intelligent independent film which raises interesting questions on the nature of art, literature, and even of film-making itself in a 'meta' sort of way.
- DirectorJoe RussoAnthony RussoStarsRyan GoslingChris EvansAna de ArmasWhen the CIA's most skilled operative, whose true identity is known to none, accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins.A great action film which heavily favours style over substance with a ridiculous story concept of the CIA trying to destroy their past crimes hidden in an asset by committing even bigger crimes which are impossible to hide.
- DirectorChloe OkunoStarsMaika MonroeKarl GlusmanBurn GormanA young American actress moves with her husband to Bucharest, and begins to suspect that a stranger who watches her from an apartment window may be a serial killer. In what can be described as a Hitchcockian film in the way the director encapsulates tension-building through suspense to a certain point or climax, 'Watcher' is sure to delight many fans. However, I found the ending to be slightly disappointing.
- DirectorMimi CaveStarsDaisy Edgar-JonesSebastian StanJojo T. GibbsAfter quitting dating apps, a woman meets the supposedly perfect man and accepts his invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites. Not exactly a fresh take on the horror genre, excuse the pun, as it reminds me too much of 'Hannibal' the 2013 TV series. However, that is not to mean it is not worthwhile to watch as both are of an exceedingly good quality even if similar.
- DirectorJanus MetzStarsGoksin ErdemliKasia MaderaChris PineVeteran CIA agent Henry is reunited in Vienna with his former colleague and lover Celia.'All the Old Knives' has beautiful cinematography from start to finish and the ending is great with an unexpected and emotional plot twist. However, some parts in the beginning felt too confusing and monotonous.
- DirectorDavid PaulidesStarsDaniela SalmenJohn MilesAdam PalmerDave Paulides investigates cases of elk hunters who've gone missing from specific regions of North America, and explores the theory that there could be a connection between these disappearances and sightings of UFOs.A diverting documentary by David Paulides on mysteries relating to UFOs or UAPs as they are sometimes referred to now.
- DirectorMary HarronStarsBen KingsleyBarbara SukowaEzra MillerIn 1973, a young gallery assistant goes on a wild adventure behind the scenes as he helps the aging genius Salvador Dali prepare for a big show in New York.An interesting film about Dali's eccentric lifestyle and artistic vision. However, I feel that since it could have been more original, bolder, and more focused in its portrayal of Dali's life and art.
- DirectorCarlota PeredaStarsLaura GalánRichard HolmesCarmen MachiAn overweight teen is bullied by a clique of cool girls poolside while holidaying in her village. The long walk home will change the rest of her life.'Piggy', originally titled 'Cerdita' in Spanish is enjoyable enough but I felt that the ending could have taken a different angle and explored a different side to the protagonist's character.
